Doug Kyed's Mailbag: Lions' playoff potential, Davis Mills' future, strange Patriots offensive quirks and more (@SMELLMYFART302: DO YOU THINK THE LIONS ARE PLAYOFF CONTENDERS - Nice Twitter handle, first of all. Felt like that had to be acknowledged out of the gate.  Second, yeah, sure. I think they could be. The NFC is wide open, really, beyond the four favorites.  So, the Lions currently have the 11th-shortest odds in the conference. They’ve started 1-1 and kept things interesting at the end in a Week 1 loss to the Eagles. Then Philadelphia stomped the Vikings in Week 2. We won’t get too deeply into the transitive property here, because we’ll find out in Week 3 how competitive the Lions can be against the Vikings. But the Lions have talent, and I think they could be serious competitors when they find their quarterback of the future. They also have two first-round picks next year, so they’re also in tremendous position to land Young, Stroud or Levis.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-doug-kyeds-mailbag-lions-playoff-potential-davis-mills-future-strange-patriots-offensive-quirks-and-more

RB Index: A concerning trend; new No. 1 in rankings (3.  D'Andre Swift (2022 stats: 2 games | 20 att | 200 rush yds | 10.0 ypc | 1 rush TD | 5 rec | 62 rec yds | 1 rec TD | 0 fumbles lost):  Speaking of being in a good spot, Swift is thriving in this new high-scoring Lions offense. He is massively efficient in both the run and pass games, and he's popped a 50-yard run in each game. Not sure how long he can continue that streak, but let's just enjoy the moment right now for a star in the making. I mean, how about this catch-tumble-and-run touchdown?!):  https://www.nfl.com/news/rb-index-week-3-let-s-get-physical-at-the-goal-line-plus-a-new-no-1-in-the-runni

Week 3 NFL OL Rankings: Lions Keep Rolling While Buccaneers And Rams Deal With Injuries (Injuries aren’t bothering the Lions - The Lions, who are in Tier 1 of our OL rankings, faced a difficult challenge on Sunday. Not only were they going up against a stout Commanders defensive front led by Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, but they were doing so without the entirety of their projected starting interior offensive line.  Right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai has been on injured reserve since early September, forcing preseason standout Logan Stenberg to fill in. Meanwhile, center Frank Ragnow missed Week 2 with a groin injury. Evan Brown, who started 12 games in Ragnow’s absence in 2021, replaced him again against Washington.  Detroit’s most interesting decision came at left guard, where starter Jonah Jackson was out while dealing with a finger issue. Early in the week, it looked like the Lions would insert Drew Forbes into the lineup, but he only joined the roster two weeks ago. Instead, Detroit went with practice squad call-up Dan Skipper — and the results were outstanding.  At 6’9″, Skipper is likely the tallest lineman ever to play guard. Since Pro Football Reference started collecting Combine data in 2000, only two other linemen — Kolton Miller and Dennis Roland — have measured in at 6’9″ or above, and they’re both tackles. Skipper is nominally a tackle, but the Lions felt he was the best choice at guard in Week 2.  Skipper, who has spent time with six different teams and is on his third stint in Detroit, showed a lot of athleticism for a man of his size, and he earned plaudits from Dan Campbell following the Lions’ 36-27 win.  Detroit ran for 191 yards and averaged eight yards per carry, while the front five gave Jared Goff enough time to throw four touchdowns and finish with the week’s seventh-best adjusted net yards per attempt.  First-year Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been a revelation through two weeks, and the team’s offensive line has been a massive part of his play-calling success. And while no team wants injuries to occur, Detroit’s health question marks are allowing backups like Skipper, Sternberg, and Brown to gain valuable experience.  OL Rankings: Tier 1 - Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-ol-rankings-week-3-2022/

Week 3 Predictions

Biglead (LIONS (+7) over VIKINGS:  All right, so we were wrong about Kirk Cousins and the Vikings. Who hasn't written that exact sentence several times over the last few years, though? The Lions, meanwhile, looked like a complete team in their win over Washington. Detroit might sneakily be the second-best team in the NFC North, and they'll stake a claim for that title in Minnesota this Sunday. Walter football (Week 3 NFL Pick: Lions 34, Vikings 31):  https://walterfootball.com/nflpicks2022_03early.php

Week 3 NFL game picks: Steelers outduel Browns; Buccaneers top Packers (Lions win 33-30.  Less than one week after getting steamrolled by one of football’s most physical offensive lines, the Vikings’ defense faces another. In this seesaw early portion of the season, I tend to pick according to what units are most consistent. The Lions’ offense is that group. Amon-Ra St. Brown and D’Andre Swift are making the jump from good to special and I trust Detroit's staff to give its squad a slight edge.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/week-3-nfl-game-picks-2022-nfl-season

CBS Brinson (Lions at Vikings:  The Lions over is a bet this season until it doesn't hit. This team simply refuses to die and thusly ends up in some kind of shootout every week. Imagine Dan Campbell yelling at you on the sideline -- you don't think about the scoreboard, you just feel like you shotgunned four Red Bulls in a row. Then you run on the field and pretend it's a one-score game.   The Pick: Lions 35, Vikings 31):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2022-nfl-week-3-picks-bengals-and-texans-pick-up-first-wins-bills-blow-out-dolphins/

USA Today (6 pick the Vikings to win by scores of 27-24, 27-24, 34-27, 24-20, 27-23, 25-22. 1 picks the Lions to win 27-24):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl-picks/2022/09/22/nfl-picks-week-3-spreads-locks-packers-buccaneers-brady-rodgers/8083916001/

SN Iyer (Lock of the Week: Vikings (-7. 52.5 o/u) over Lions - The Vikings' defense is much improved with a 3-4 scheme anchored by a good edge pass rush again. They also should be able to move the ball downfield with Justin Jefferson and run for chunks with Dalvin Cook at home vs. an overmatched Detroit defense. Minnesota will rattle Jared Goff plenty while Kirk Cousins gets settled to thoroughly outplay him.  Pick: Vikings win 34-17 and cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-against-spread-week-3/ktsxmtjo85gtufv0qxficcbh

SN Bender (Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings (-7) - The Lions are an early-season feel-good team with the additions made with second-year coach Dan Campbell. They've scored 35.5 points per game, and Jared Goff is off to a great start with playmakers DeAndre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown. These teams split last year's meetings, and each game was decided by two points. We're still not sold on Detroit's defense, and the Kirk Cousins-Justin Jefferson continues in a fun NFC North matchup.  Pick: Vikings 30, Lions 23 ):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-3/yfwetgvlrrnnrcgjd2qjgfz2

CBS Prisco (Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings (-6):  The Vikings were awful in losing to the Eagles on Monday night. The plan was bad on both sides of the ball. But they will get back on track here. The Lions have played well so far this season, especially on offense, but this is their first road game. The Minnesota offense will play well since it's not a Monday night game, which happen to cripple Kirk Cousins. The Vikings take it.  Pick: Vikings 31, Lions 23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/priscos-nfl-week-3-picks-patriots-sneak-past-ravens-aaron-rodgers-gets-revenge-on-tom-brady-buccaneers/

CBS Sullivan (Lions at Vikings:  The Vikings are coming off a stinker on Monday night where Kirk Cousins looked like "Prime-time Kirk Cousins" and threw three picks while the team managed just seven points against Philadelphia. While the 1 p.m. ET kickoff is a much more palatable window for Cousins, the Lions have played teams close under Dan Campbell. Since he arrived last season, Detroit has covered 68.4% of their games (13-6 ATS), which is the second-best percentage in the entire NFL over that stretch. That also includes a 2-0 ATS record to begin this season. Against divisional opponents, the Lions are 4-2 ATS over that same stretch. Minnesota may be the better team and are set up nicely for a bounce-back at home, but Detroit will keep this close and could end up being a game determined by a field goal. After all, both games between these two teams last year were determined by a total of four points. .Projected score: Vikings 30, Lions 27):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-3-odds-picks-rams-handle-kyler-murrays-cardinals-lions-cover-on-road-vs-vikings/

AP Pro Maaddi (Detroit (plus 5 1/2) at Minnesota:  Jared Goff has Detroit’s offense soaring. The Vikings are coming off a short week following a beatdown in Philadelphia on Monday night. Kirk Cousins should have an easier time finding Justin Jefferson this time around.  VIKINGS 27-24):  https://pro32.ap.org/article/pro-picks-browns-not-among-9-home-dogs-vs-steelers

O'HARA'S WEEK 3 PREVIEW: What changed for Hutchinson between Games 1 and 2 (My pick: Lions at Vikings: The Lions shouldn't feel overmatched, even though the Vikings are favored by seven points. Both games last season were decided by two points – a 19-17 win for the Vikings in Week 6, and 29-27 for the Lions in Week 13. The home team won both times. A slight edge goes to the Vikings, but not enough to cover.  Vikings 27, Lions 24.):  https://www.detroitlions.com/news/o-hara-s-week-3-preview-what-changed-for-hutchinson-between-games-1-and-2

PFN (Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings - Adam Beasley’s Prediction:  Vikings 28, Lions 24; Dalton Miller’s Prediction - Vikings 31, Lions 28; Dallas Robinson’s Prediction - Vikings 30, Lions 22):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-week-3-picks-predictions-lock-upset-2022/

Fox sports NFL Week 3 preview: Schedule, analysis, matchups and picks for every game (Prediction: Fireworks! Both teams have come a long way from their conservative offensive reputations. They have plenty of weapons and trust them in nearly every situation. Detroit keeps this far more competitive than most would have expected before Hard Knocks began, but nevertheless.  Vikings 32, Lions 30 — Carmen Vitali):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-week-3-preview-schedule-analysis-matchups-and-picks-for-every-game

PFT’s Week 3 2022 NFL Picks (Lions (+6) at Vikings - MDS’s take: The Lions’ offense is better than people think, but their secondary will struggle against Justin Jefferson and the Vikings will pull off a narrow win.  MDS’s pick: Vikings 35, Lions 31.  Florio’s take: This has become a sneaky great rivalry, with a couple of barnburners in 2021. The Vikings should be able to win at home. Whichever team prevails, the final score should be close enough for the Lion to cover.  Florio’s pick: Vikings 27, Lions 24.):  https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/09/22/pfts-week-3-2022-nfl-picks/

Football Meteorology For 2022 NFL Week 3 (Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings (-6): This one should be fun. Detroit is looking to score 35 or more points for the fourth game in a row. Amon-Ra St. Brown has become a massive problem for defenses, and the Lions run game is strong enough to make defenses pay for committing too many resources to shutting down the Sun God.  But the Vikings offense is potent in its own right. Justin Jefferson might be the best WR in the league right now, a complete package of a weapon. Kirk Cousins has done a good job of getting the ball out quickly and accurately, nullifying the creative Detroit pass rush. If Minnesota can avoid turning the ball over, they should be able to sneak away with the home win. The line seems way too high, however.  Vikings 33, Lions 31):  https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3479/Football-Meteorology-For-2022-NFL-Week-3

Detroit at Minnesota: NFL predictions and picks for Week 3 (Lance Pugmire: Vikings 27, Lions 20  - Despite looking flat in Philadelphia Monday night, the new week and divisional consequences stoke Minnesota to victory here. After seeing what he did to Justin Jefferson, Detroit is kicking itself for losing Darius Slay.):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2022/09/22/detroit-lions-minnesota-vikings-predictions-picks-nfl-week-3/10430469002/

SN Alford (Lions vs. Vikings prediction - This NFC North matchup might end up being one of the better games during the early window in Week 3. The Lions are not scared and have a feisty defense that will get after the quarterback. Goff has done a good job of not turning over the ball, which will loom large in this game. I expect both running games to have a couple of huge runs. Also, after being shut down by the Eagles, Jefferson should break out of his mini-slump and gets a touchdown. It will be a close game, with the Vikings getting the win in the last two minutes of the final frame.  PREDICTION: Minnesota 30, Detroit 27. With COVID-shortened offseasons, there have been rough starts for many early linebacker selections. That hasn’t been the case so far in 2022.  Malcolm Rodriguez, Detroit Lions:  Sixth-rounders aren’t supposed to do what Rodriguez is doing. He looks like a wily veteran two weeks into his NFL career. He’s playing at a speed right now that’s unparalleled for a rookie. At only 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds, Rodriguez has to do so to avoid getting taken out of plays by opposing linemen. He carries a top-10 overall grade among starting linebackers (76.7) and is the highest-graded rookie defender.:  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-draft-scouting-notebook-top-2023-prospects

NFL Week 3 underdogs: Russell Wilson's Broncos to knock off 49ers? Will Dolphins hand Bills first loss? (4. Lions at Vikings: Which team is Minnesota? Is it the squad that held Green Bay to seven points and won comfortably in Week 1? Or is it the group that looked completely overmatched on Monday night in Philadelphia?  If it's the latter, these scrappy Lions have a legitimate shot. Detroit has punched above its weight in its first two games this season, taking the Eagles to the wire in the opener and earning an emphatic win over Washington in Week 2. The Lions are fun and they're competitive enough to give themselves a chance against a Vikings team that might still be searching for its identity.  Detroit's hitting the road for the first time in 2022, leaving the supportive confines of Ford Field for another domed stadium further north. The road environment might shake this upstart bunch, especially if the going gets tough early. But I've learned one important thing about these Dan Campbell-led Lions: They're not laying down for anyone.  This game pits two veteran quarterbacks against inconsistent defenses, but one of the two is performing better than expected. Jared Goff has outplayed Kirk Cousins to this point, besting him in touchdown-to-interception ratio (6:1 versus 3:3) and passer rating (100.1 to 78.9). Goff is also one of four quarterbacks this season with six or more passing touchdowns and one or fewer picks. He might just be peaking in his seventh season, and players like Amon-Ra St. Brown and D'Andre Swift are benefitting.  History says Cousins has the advantage. He's 4-0 versus the Lions at home and has thrived against Detroit. But again, these aren't the same old Lions.   In the wake of Cousins' three-pick debacle against the Eagles, the Vikings are looking to get back on track. Detroit is ready to keep them from reaching that track.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-week-3-underdogs-russell-wilson-s-broncos-to-knock-off-49ers-will-dolphins-h

Week 3 Rookie Rankings: Wilson, London rise (7.  Malcolm Rodriguez:  Rodriguez plays with great balance and fills his gaps. His closing speed is better than I may have given him credit for during the draft process.  9.  Aidan Hutchinson:  It was a long day for the Washington offensive line against Hutchinson. He was credited with three sacks but nearly had an additional strip sack of Carson Wentz. Strength and tenacity were tentpoles of the Michigan product's play Sunday. He deserves a lot of credit for setting the edge and playing the run as well.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-3-rookie-power-rankings-drake-london-garrett-wilson-continue-to-deliver-for-falcons-jets/

Chiefs, Bills top Nick Wright's NFL tiers entering Week 3 (MUST-SEE TV: Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars - Wright's thoughts: "The Cardinals and Lions are just fun to watch. You don't know if they're good, but they're definitely exciting. The Browns are inventing new ways to lose. And the Jaguars, let's be honest, the Prince [Trevor Lawrence], you got to watch him. What is he going to do next? Is he going to get the Jaguars to the playoffs already? Oh, I think he is."):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/chiefs-bills-top-nick-wrights-nfl-tiers-entering-week-3

NFL QB Tiers after Week 2: Sure, there's Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. Then who? (6.  I think we all expected better (maybe not from you, Goff) - 25. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions, 0.019:  Goff has a 6:1 touchdown:interception ratio and is airing it out a fair amount but his actual completion rate (57.7 percent) is a full nine points lower than the Next Gen Stats model thinks it should be.):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-quarterback-rankings-tiers-josh-allen-patrick-mahomes

NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 3: Are Brady, Rodgers In Decline? And Is Brissett Better Than Expected? (Tier 5: Carried - Quarterbacks in this tier aren’t precluded from winning a good chunk of games, but the rest of the team will definitely be doing the heavy lifting while the quarterbacks try not to hold back the group too much. These quarterbacks won’t win many games with average teams, but they also won’t tank good rosters outright. At least on most days.  Jared Goff, Detroit Lions:  Against all odds, the Lions look like a good team in need of a good quarterback. They have Jared Goff, who at least isn’t sinking the ship.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-quarterback-rankings-week-3/
