Week 13 Power Rankings


FTW (18.  Detroit Lions (Last week’s rank: 18):  On a pure schematic basis, Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson continues to show why he’ll likely be one of the hotter head coaching candidates this offseason. With an excellent offensive front in tow, Johnson’s creativity with a multifaceted running game while finding ways to feed Amon-Ra St. Brown over and over cannot be overstated. As a result, the Lions are a feisty bunch that can score on anyone. Detroit Lions (4-7) (Last week: No. 23):  A case of “failing upward,” the Lions took a dominant AFC team down to the wire on a short week after a big road win against another tough team in the New York Giants. It may be fair to say that Detroit is coming out of their rebuild. It's been brutal, and they've been competitive in almost every game. They easily could have defeated the Bills on Thanksgiving, but they fell just slightly short, which has been a theme this season. Fox sports (19. Detroit Lions (4-7): It is at least a positive sign for the Lions that Thursday's loss felt devastating, because they've played well enough to give fans hope. Detroit absolutely deserved to beat Buffalo for large parts of the early Thanksgiving game. Yahoo (20. Detroit Lions (4-7, LW: 20):  The Lions wanted a better result on Thanksgiving, but being in a position to beat the Bills right until the end is ultimately a good thing for Detroit. Like last season, they're playing better as the season goes on. They have some cornerstones like receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. NFL.com (20.  Detroit Lions (Previous rank: No. 18):  The Lions continue to show they can hang with just about any team in the league. The next step is finding ways to beat the best. The Bills escaped Ford Field with a 28-25 win thanks to a Tyler Bass field goal with two seconds to play, and it was the Lions’ final drive minutes earlier that left fans playing the “What if?” game. Facing third-and-1 at the Buffalo 33-yard line with 32 ticks to play, Jared Goff spotted D.J. Chark with a step on his defender on a fade route, but the two were clearly not on the same page. Opportunity lost. "I told them this one should sting," coach Dan Campbell said. "We had a chance to win and we didn't make it, but I don't think this was a step backward. CBS (22. Detroit Lions:  They had their winning streak snapped on Thanksgiving, which means it's all about next year for them. PFN (23. Detroit Lions:  After losing the plot and winning three straight games in November, the Lions finally remembered that they’re a rebuilding team that’s supposed to compete in games, not win them.  Detroit hung with Buffalo for four quarters, and the consistent battles they find themselves in despite their roster inadequacies should give fans hope for the future – one hopefully with a QB who can elevate those around him.  Jared Goff is playing some of the best football he has in years, and it should come as no surprise Detroit has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. ESPN (23. Detroit Lions (4-7) (Week 12 ranking: 23):  Realistic expectation: Doubling their win total from last season.  The expectations were higher in Year 2 of the Dan Campbell era. Although they got off to a rough 1-6 start, lately the Lions have been among the hottest teams in the league, winning three of their past four games. The Lions might not finish at .500 this year, but they do have an opportunity to double their win total from 3-13-1 in 2021 to at least six wins this season, which is a big improvement as they continue to take steps toward their rebuild. SN (24. Detroit Lions 4-7 (19):  The Lions showed more of their offensive grit in their run-heavy attack around Jared Goff and the defense has proved capable of making some big plays at times.
