2024 NFL Draft EDGE rankings & analysis (4: Chop Robinson, Penn State:  The four-star Gaithersburg, MD product originally attended his home-state school of Maryland in 2021, contributing 263 snaps at off-ball linebacker in 13 games before transferring to Penn State as a sophomore where he moved back to his natural position, EDGE. Despite not starting a game for PSU’s ultra-deep defensive line group, Robinson logged 455 snaps with 48 pressures, 10.0 TFL and 5.5 sacks to go with a sensational 91st percentile PFF overall grade in 2022. Robinson was ready to ascend in Happy Valley this season, and he did so by recording his second consecutive season with 90th percentile pass rushing and overall grades. He led PSU with 12 stops despite ranking 11th on the team with 294 snaps due to injury. His 18% pressure rate was elite, bolstered by his blistering 2.28-seconds average time to first pressure. Robinson also made huge strides by slashing his 2022 missed tackle rate of 26.7% (ninth-highest MTF rate among 2022 EDGEs) to an excellent 7.1% missed tackle rate that was the eighth-lowest nationally amongst his EDGE rusher contemporaries.  Robinson put on a show on the Indianapolis track, running an astounding 4.48s 40-yard dash (99.5th%) with a 1.53s 10-yard split (99.5th%). He followed that up with a 4.25s shuttle run (92nd%) and 10’08” broad (99th%) for a sparkling 9.72 Relative Athletic Score.  As is indicated from his supernatural track speed, Chop is a demon running the loop and displays an array of counters to free himself up so he can make a run at the quarterback. He likes to line up wide when possible to give him a sharper angle to setup a crossface counter. Does a great job getting low when engaging blockers on run downs, but has a tendency to almost get “too low” when bending the EDGE, causing him to lose footing and get sprawled on by opposing tackles. 2024 NFL Draft: 6 boom-or-bust prospects (EDGE CHOP ROBINSON, PENN STATE:  Robinson is incredibly talented. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive end turned heads at the NFL scouting combine by placing in the 95th percentile or above in the 10-yard split, 40-yard dash and broad jump. He was also an 84th-percentile athlete in the short shuttle.  Yet, Robinson's production over the past few seasons was less than stellar, including only 5 1/2 sacks in 2022 and four sacks in 2023. Now, he did earn PFF pass-rushing grades of 92.4 and 92.3 in each of the past two seasons with 20.0%-plus pass-rush win rates, which is very impressive. The risk here stems from Robinson's lack of length, both in his legs and his arms, and how that projects to the next level. His wingspan ranks in the 5th percentile for edge rushers, and his stride length doesn’t cover much ground at the snap, even with his explosiveness.  Robinson wins primarily off athleticism right now, which is tough to do in the NFL. Fantasy Football: Analytical spotlight on the top 2024 rookie edge defenders (CHOP ROBINSON, PENN STATE - No. 5 ranked EDGE on the PFF big board.  97th percentile prospect profile among college EDGE prospects since 2016.  Robinson’s high-end pass-rush metrics propel him near the top of this model, putting him among the elite players at the position, with an argument to be made for him as a first-round pick. He is currently projected to go in the early part of the second round, but with his 97th percentile score, he would be the only edge defender who scored 94th percentile and above to not go in the first round.  Robinson’s ability to win with explosiveness and a quick first step make him a standout in the PFF grading system as his high-quality/quick wins are always going to grade better than second-effort or later wins. This is highlighted in Robinson’s greatest strength — quick pressure rate. Chop lit up the combine with an incredible athletic display, but that was expected. His lack of length and weirdly low sack total for such a pressure-creating machine in college make Robinson a tough prospect to slot. He seems clearly behind Dallas Turner, Jared Verse and Laiatu Latu in the EDGE pecking order, which pushes him into the 20s at the earliest. Chop Robinson, Penn State, 6-3, 254, Junior - Overview: Robinson began his college career with his home-state Maryland Terrapins as a four-star recruit, flashing as a true freshman with 19 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and two sacks. He opted to transfer to Penn State prior to his sophomore season and splashed, recording what would be career-highs in tackles (26), tackles for loss (10) and sacks (5.5). While the splash is undeniable, the lack of statistics are worrisome. NFL Combine 2024 winners & losers: Michael Penix, Xavier Worthy among those who impressed (Winners - Chop Robinson and Laiatu Latu:  Robinson put together a great all-around performance at the 2024 NFL Combine. He ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash among edge rushers (4.48 seconds) and looked excellent during the on-field drills.  Robinson showed particularly well in the hoops drill, which is designed to measure how well pass rushers can bend and change direction to get by offensive tackles. He demonstrated great body control and made a near-perfect figure-8 while running the drill.  Latu had similar success in the on-field drills, looking poised, polished and smooth across all of them. He wasn't quite as fast as Robinson — Latu logged a 4.64-second 40-yard dash — but like the Penn State product, Latu was excellent in the hoops drill and showed fluid movement skills when performing the four-bag drills.  Latu also demonstrated great character and stayed past his session at the NFL Combine to cheer on his teammates and counterparts participating in the linebacker drills. What We Learned in Indy: Rising DT puts on a SHOW (2. Chop flies. Chop Robinson sliced through the 40-yard dash competition among the defensive linemen on Friday. Penn State's 6-2 7/8, 254-pound pass rusher recorded an official 40-yard dash time of 4.48 seconds, the best among the defensive line group. Robinson opted not to run a second 40. The next-fastest time was from Colorado State edge rusher Mohamed Kamara at 4.57 seconds, followed by Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse at 4.58. Robinson also turned in a respectable result in the vertical jump (34 1/2 inches) and a strong number in the broad jump -- 10-foot-8, which tied for the top DL number with Houston Christian edge rusher Jalyx Hunt. Robinson's numbers actually fell short of his stated goals of an 11-foot broad jump and a vertical jump of 38 to 40 inches. But you'd be hard-pressed to say it was a disappointing day for Chop. We knew he was an elite athlete, and he proved it, becoming the second player in the last 20 combines to run a sub-4.5 40 and post a broad jump of at least 10-foot-6 after weighing in at 250-plus pounds. The only other player to do so was former 49ers tight end Vernon Davis in 2006. DE Chop Robinson, WR Roman Wilson lead prospects to watch in combine drills (Defensive player most likely to stand out: Penn State edge Chop Robinson - Feldman, who writes the annual "Freaks List" of the most jaw-dropping athletes in college football for The Athletic, shared that Robinson is his top guy from this past year's list who's in Indianapolis, comparing him to a former Penn State standout edge rusher.   "He's a guy who'll test exceptionally well," Feldman said of Robinson. "There's a lot of comparisons, physically, to Micah Parsons. Going into the year, a lot of people looked at him as a top-15 caliber pick, whereas coming out of the season, I think there were some questions. Is he a first-round pick? Is he a mid-second? Where is he?"  While Penn State's defense was one of the best in the country, Robinson didn't put up amazing stats. He recorded only 15 total tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles in 10 games.   But Feldman believes Robinson could elevate his stock this weekend to the point where he hears his name called on Day 1 of the draft.  "If he comes into Indy and does not only what he thinks he's going to do, but what some of the people around him in the training process over the last couple of weeks think he's going to … he's going to be hard to pass up in the first round," Feldman said. What We Learned from DL/LB pressers (4. The origin of Chop (and Plump). One of Thursday's most anticipated workouts will be that of Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson, whose freakish athletic ability is well-documented. At 255 pounds, he said his goal is to run a 4.4-second 40-yard dash, post a broad jump of 11 feet and leap 38 to 40 inches in the vertical.  All of those marks would place him among the top combine performers in modern history at his position.  Not bad for a guy who was once given the nickname "Plump" by family members.  "My household nickname is Plump, but nobody knows that," he said on Wednesday.  In fact, Robinson is a man of at least a few names. His first name is Demeioun, but he said the only time anyone ever calls him by that name is if he's in trouble. At 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, Chop Robinson has drawn some comparisons to Dallas' Micah Parsons in terms of his football traits.  He said Tuesday at the Combine he expects to r pplun the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, record over an 11-foot broad jump and have a vertical in the 38-to-40-inch range.  "I definitely say my bend," Chop Robinson said Tuesday when asked what trait besides his speed will stick out to teams.
