2026 NFL draft: Best team fits in Rounds 2-3 for sleepers (Edge Gabe Jacas to the Lions -Where it could happen: No. 50.  Why it needs to happen: The Lions' two most pressing needs entering the draft were potential starters at tackle and edge (opposite Aidan Hutchinson). A strong, physical edge player, he tallied 27 total sacks over four years, 11 of which came in his final year. Has a wrestling background, which is clear in his understanding of leverage and hand usage. Despite being known for his bruising playing style, he has more athleticism than meets the eye, and could test great this week.  Current draft projection: Round 2.  Combine vibes:  I came into the Combine with Jacas as one of my favorite early targets for the Lions at 50th overall, and I left a little disappointed from his media session. Don’t get me wrong, he didn’t say anything concerning, but I was hoping his personality would shine through a little more.  I will say, he did say several things that made me believe he’d be a good fit in Detroit, though. Here’s how he descirbed himself.  “They’re going to get a physical player, a disciplined player, someone that doesn’t take a play off,” Jacas said. “Someone that is just a natural leader. Someone that is going to attack every play, and someone you can depend on.”  In terms of his play style, too, it’s a great fit in Detroit. Jacas raved about his speed-to-power pass rush move and talked about his motor. In other words, the content of his media session confirmed to me he would fit the Lions well, but the press conference was certainly missing some sizzle.) He showed up to the Senior Bowl at just over 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds. He was listed and played more at 270-275 pounds at Illinois, but surprisingly, that came as a stand-up edge defender and not as an interior player. That is due to his first-step explosiveness, which is quite impressive for a player of his size.  If he can pair good testing numbers with his tape (88.5 PFF pass-rush grade in 2025) and Senior Bowl practice performances, Jacas could push himself into the first round for teams that like to keep their defensive fronts very multiple (New England comes to mind).) Jacas is a well-built power-based defensive end who has the athleticism to rush from the dirt or stand up on the edge. His wrestling background shows up in his violent hands, accurately striking opponents while attacking, countering, or getting off blocks. While his overall strength, anchor, and instincts all contribute to his succes defendeing the run. He would benefit from a bit more creativity, and he only has average explosiveness, but he’s an all-around good athlete for the position. 2026 NFL Draft: 10 players who will rise up Trevor Sikkema's board after the Senior Bowl (Illinois ED Gabe Jacas:  Jacas was already a top-60 player on the PFF big board entering the week, but after his three-day performance in Mobile, he’s going to rise into the top 50 and maybe even fringe Round 1 conversations. He weighed in at 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds after playing closer to 275 for the past two seasons. He showcased edge rusher versatility that we saw during his time at Illinois, winning from a wide-7 technique down to a 4i, but he did showcase some extra juice at that lower weight. The power in his game was still evident as well, which makes him a very alluring player for any odd front/multiple defense. He earned a career high in overall defensive (79.5) and pass-rush grade (88.1) this past season.) Music City Bowl NFL Prospects: Tony Pauline Identifies Tennessee’s Chris Brazzell II as Jets’ Top Target (For the Fighting Illini, their top prospect, edge rusher Gabe Jacas, has also decided to opt out of the game. The senior finished the season with 13.5 TFLs and 11 sacks, which is three more sacks than last season. He’s an explosive athlete who is used effectively out of a three-point stance or standing over the tackle. He became one of the Big Ten's most disruptive defenders, tying for the league lead in forced fumbles during the regular season and tying for second in sacks during Big Ten play (7).  Jacas was extremely productive against ranked teams, recording 5.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss and 2 forced fumbles. He was much more than a pass rusher too, finishing second on the team in tackles with 13 against Michigan and eight in the Citrus Bowl win against South Carolina.
