Grades, Analysis and Trackers for Lions Pick 24 Terrion Arnold

Grades:

PFN (Round 1, Pick 24 Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama Grade: A+.  Though he doesn’t have elite vertical speed, Arnold is an extremely fluid, hyperactive short-area mover who can suffocate WRs in press-man with his corrective athleticism and 32” arms. At the catch point, he’s a natural playmaker, and he’s the exact kind of support presence Dan Quinn and Aaron Glenn will crave.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/overall-nfl-draft-grades-2024/

Walter football (Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama – A+ Grade.  I bet the Lions were absolutely shocked that Terrion Arnold was still on the board at No. 24. He wasn’t going to last until No. 29, so I like Detroit moving up five spots to land someone who was considered the top cornerback in the draft by some. Detroit desperately needed a cornerback in the wake of Cam Sutton’s arrest, and Arnold seems like an instant upgrade.):  https://walterfootball.com/nfldraftgrades_1.php

SN Moraitis Detroit Lions' grade for taking Terrion Arnold in 2024 NFL Draft (The 6-foot, 189-pound cornerback is an outstanding athlete who has a nose for the football, and he possesses the versatility to play on the outside or in the slot, although he will play at the former spot for Detroit. The Lions do have one less Day 2 pick as a result of the trade, but that's a situation the team can afford. What's most important is Detroit landed itself someone who should bolster its secondary right away.  GRADE: A+):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/detroit-lions-grade-terrion-arnold-2024-nfl-draft/cdf1940b17fa024ee2437910

SN Iyer (24. Detroit Lions (from Cowboys): Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama - Grade: A.  The Lions tried to upgrade their cornerback situation last offseason and their veteran moves, including Cameron Sutton, didn’t work out. They are doing it better, adding the ballhawking of Arnold to complement former Buccaneer Carlton Davis. Detroit found its priority missing defensive missing piece with an immediate-impact playmaker for Aaron Glenn.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-draft-grades-2024-live-picks-results/eec4465a486ca0e01ed4c82b

USA Today NFL draft grades: Every pick from first round broken down (24. Detroit Lions (from Dallas Cowboys): Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama - Grade: A.  Here are your flowers, Brad Holmes. One year after the Lions general manager was roundly criticized for going against the grain with his first-round selections, Holmes makes a pick that deserves instant applause. Arnold is hypercompetitive and seems like the kind of cornerback Dan Campbell would make in a lab. He could be a stabilizing piece in a Detroit secondary that continued to be thrown into flux after Cam Sutton's domestic violence case and subsequent release. And what better way to follow up last year's hit with Brian Branch than by taking another hard-nosed, underrated Crimson Tide defensive back?):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2024/04/25/nfl-draft-grades-first-round-picks-2024/73459949007/

Touchdown wire Farrar - Detroit Lions select Alabama CB Terrion Arnold with the 24th overall pick. Grade: A:  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2024/04/25/detroit-lions-select-alabama-cb-terrion-arnold-with-the-24th-overall-pick-grade-a/

Athlonsports NFL Draft Grades: Instant Analysis for Every First-Round Pick (24. Terrion Arnold, CB, Detroit Lions (from Cowboys):  Even after trading for Carlton Davis III, the Lions needed more long-term help at corner. With Arnold still on the board, they couldn't resist the opportunity to move up and stop his fall. He may not have the elite speed of other corners in this draft, but he's a complete defender with great instincts and physicality. His competitive mentality and playing style is a perfect fit for Dan Campbell's team, and he's a fantastic value pick this late. Well worth a third-round pick to land one of the top two corners in the draft.  GRADE: A):  https://athlonsports.com/nfl/2024-nfl-draft-grades-live-analysis-every-first-round-pick

Athletic (Grade: A.  Former Free Press sports writer Nick Baumgardner and Scott Dochterman couldn't help but notice that Holmes, true to form, did a little wheelin' and dealin', as he has in his previous drafts in Allen Park. But that grabbing Arnold fits the organization.):  https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2024/04/26/nfl-draft-grades-detroit-lions-terrion-arnold-round-1/73465409007/

Yardbarker (Cornerback Terrion Arnold:  While the Detroit Lions offense was one of the best in the league, the defense was still searching for its identity. Although they improved in the second half of the season, the team desperately needed to add to their secondary. Brad Holmes sent the Cowboys the 29th overall and 73rd overall picks to Detroit to move up to pick 24. A worthy gamble much to the delight of the hometown crowd at the draft.  Terrion Arnold has been praised by scouts. The Alabama cornerback was a consensus-first-team All-American this season. Arnold possesses the speed and aggressiveness needed to hang with the best wide receivers in the league. Learning from an experienced cornerback like Aaron Glenn as his defensive coordinator will be great for his development. Joining a cornerback room with Emmanuel Moseley, Carlton Davis, and Brian Branch; Detroit’s secondary is in a much better place.  Grade: A):  https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/amp/2024_nfl_draft_grade_did_the_detroit_lions_resolve_their_needs/s1_17198_40294378

Yahoo (24. CB Terrion Arnold.  Draft Grade: A-.  Pre-Draft Rank: 16.  Detroit trades up to get a quality prospect that was falling down the board at a position of need. Arnold has a chance to be the best cornerback on Detroit’s roster from Day 1 and gives them a fortified presence in the secondary as the division adds Caleb Williams and J.J. McCarthy.):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/draft/

2024 NFL Draft First-Round Grades for All 32 Picks Chirco (24. Detroit Lions (from Dallas) | Terrion Arnold, CB.   Rookie contract: Four years, $14.1 million.  This year’s draft class isn’t strong toward the top at corner, but there’s terrific depth from the mid-first round on. Arnold represents that, and both he and teammate Kool-Aid McKinstry made up the best corner tandem in college football in 2023.  Arnold started two years with the Crimson Tide and totaled six interceptions and 20 passes defensed. He comes into the NFL at 6'0" and 189 pounds while running a 4.5 40-time, giving him average measurables. Grade: A-):  https://www.si.com/nfl/2024/04/25/2024-nfl-draft-first-round-pick-grades

SI All Lions LAMORANDIER (As Arnold fell down the draft board, Holmes couldn’t resist getting so close to a top corner and not coming away with him. In doing so, he gave up a third-rounder to move up five spots. Yes, cornerback was the Lions' biggest position of need. But, was it worth giving up a Day 2 pick, instead of "settling" for another talented corner, such as Arnold’s teammate, Kool-Aid McKinstry? That’s a tough call for me.  As a player, Arnold does so many different things well. There’s a reason many analysts had him as the top cornerback in the entire draft. The first-team All-American led the highly competitive SEC in both interceptions (5) and passes defended. It is important to note that Arnold was also targeted (64) a healthy dose more than most of the other top cornerbacks in the class. Maybe that is because of McKinstry playing on the opposite side, who saw just 36 targets. Overall, Arnold allowed an impressive 49.1 passer rating against in 2023.  More quick than fast, Arnold has fluid hips, and is very sticky on wide receivers. Despite basketball being his first love and being recruited as a safety, his instincts as a corner and ability to read routes are top-notch.  In the run game, he is physical, and he had the highest Pro Football Focus run-defense grade (90.2) of any FBS defensive back in the draft. Arnold also has the versatility to play outside and in the slot.  Perhaps the best football is still ahead of Arnold. Recently turning 21 years old, Arnold has continued to improve every season. Outside of elite top-end speed, Arnold is about as complete a prospect as possible.  Grade: A-):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/detroit-lions-2024-nfl-draft-grades

NFL.com (Draft pick - Alabama DB Terrion Arnold (No. 24 overall).  Analysis: The release of Cameron Sutton kept the cornerback position high on the team's need list. Therefore, it was no surprise they made a trade with the Cowboys to move up for Arnold, one of the best defenders in college football last season. He blanketed pass catchers inside and outside for the Tide while also offering physicality in run support. Considered a potential top-12 pick for much of the pre-draft process, he presented good value at No. 24, but we'll see if trading a third-rounder to Dallas instead of waiting for Arnold's former teammate, Kool-Aid McKinstry or Nate Wiggins later in the round would have made more sense. CBS NFL Draft grades: Lions trade up for CB Terrion Arnold (NFL Draft grade: B.  "The Lions needed some corner help, so it makes sense to make a move to get one. Arnold gives them another Alabama secondary player to go with Brian Branch, another player with versatility." -- Pete Prisco):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/lions-nfl-draft-grades-2024-terrion-arnold-goes-no-24-as-detroit-addresses-major-need-amid-super-bowl-chase/

Foxsports (24. Detroit Lions (from Dallas): Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama. A former safety who still plays with the physicality you’d expect at that position, Arnold is perhaps the perfect match of this year’s cornerback class for Dan Campbell and the suddenly hyper-aggressive Lions. Arnold is the latest of the great Alabama defensive backs, tying for the SEC lead in pass breakups (17) and interceptions (five) this past season. He should only get better behind a formidable Detroit pass rush.  Grade: B):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-draft-picks-grades-and-analysis

FTW (24. Detroit Lions (via Dallas Cowboys): Terrion Arnold, Alabama CB.  Yes, Detroit overpaid here, giving up a top-80 selection to move up five slots toward the end of the first round. But Arnold is a worthwhile luxury, a cornerback who can have an immediate impact in a secondary that badly needs it. The Lions 91.5 passer rating allowed was 12th worst in the NFL last season, and that was before Cameron Sutton was released following a domestic violence arrest. This is a team that could afford to make a win-now swing after landing at the Super Bowl’s doorstep, even if the Cowboys got a great deal as well. Grade: B):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-draft-grades-2024-first-round-tracker-caleb-williams-jayden-daniels

PFF (R1 (24) DETROIT LIONS (VIA DALLAS COWBOYS): CB TERRION ARNOLD, ALABAMA - Pick Grade: Very Good.  Detroit trades up to acquire the 14th-ranked player on PFF big board in Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold, who is an alpha presence in the secondary who plays with a fearless mentality. He led all SEC cornerbacks in interceptions and pass breakups in 2023. He also led the conference with a 90.6 PFF run-defense grade. Detroit has officially overhauled their cornerback room with the additions of Arnold, Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson.):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2024-nfl-draft-grades-all-32-first-round-picks

Analysis:

SI Lions (Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama - How he fits: Arnold is a physical cornerback who excels in man-to-man coverage. This will go nicely with the team's man-heavy scheme under coordinator Aaron Glenn. He has excellent anticipation which lends itself to the ability to stay on top of opposing routes and in turn allows him to intercept the ball at a high rate. He led the SEC with five interceptions last season.  When he starts: The Lions added a pair of veteran corners this offseason in Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson. Both players could be day one starters, so there's not as much pressure for Arnold to start right away. However, he has all the talent to be in the mix from day one and it would be no surprise for him to be on the boundary in the season opener.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/evaluating-detroit-lions-draft-picks

NFL.com Brooks (24. CB Terrion Arnold:  This is a perfect fit for Detroit, as Arnold is a clean playmaker and technician who checks off all the boxes. The Lions are upping the ante on the back end when it comes to football IQ by adding another Nick Saban defender one year after drafting Brian Branch.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-draft-bucky-brooks-pick-by-pick-analysis-for-round-1

ESPN (Round 1: No. 24 (via Dallas): Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama - My take: Detroit needs help in the secondary after releasing veteran cornerback Cam Sutton. Trading up with the Dallas Cowboys to get Arnold should help the team fix some of their struggles. The Lions allowed 34 completions thrown at least 20 yards downfield last season, which tied with the Houston Texans for second most in the league. Arnold's selection marks the second time the Lions have taken a defensive in the first round this century. The other was Jeff Okudah at No. 3 in 2020.  Ties to the team to know: The Lions continued their Alabama pipeline under general manager Brad Holmes. This was the third straight year Detroit has taken a Crimson Tide player in the first round. Arnold joins running back Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023 (12th ove israll), and wide receiver Jameson Williams (12th overall) in 2022. Detroit also selected Alabama defensive back Brian Branch in the second round last year.  What we're hearing about Arnold: "He is a physical player, he's a willing participant in the tackle game," said Lions Passing Game Coordinator/Defensive Backs coach Deshea Townsend, a former Alabama standout himself. "You see him play multiple positions. He played outside, he played inside, and he is not afraid."  What's next: Arnold will join Carlton Davis III and Amik Robertson as new cornerback additions this offseason, and will compete for a starting role immediately. Now that the pass defense has been addressed, the Lions could turn their attention to the defensive line, linebacker, or wide receiver.):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2024/story/_/id/39962918/detroit-lions-nfl-draft-picks-2024-selection-analysis-depth-chart

Trackers:

ESPN (Pre-Draft Analysis - Arnold emerged as one of the top corner prospects in the class with an impressive 2023 season. He's tough and long, and while he's at his best in press, he has some scheme versatility. And Arnold has excellent ball skills -- he picked off five passes in 2023 and has the frame to compete for 50-50 balls. His length is an asset when it comes to breaking up passes. Arnold is also a willing run-defender and doesn't shy away from contact as a tackler. -- Steve Muench.  Matt Miller's pro comp: Devon Witherspoon.  Post-Draft Analysis.  Despite adding Carlton Davis III and Amik Robertson this offseason, the Lions traded up to get Arnold. GM Brad Holmes saw how productive an Alabama defensive back was for him last season in Brian Branch, which made him go back to the well again. Arnold gives the Lions a true CB1 in a division that contains plenty of talented wide receivers. -- Jordan Reid.  Overall value: Massive steal. Arnold is the second corner on my board but he has the same grade as CB1 Quinyon Mitchell and is the 11th overall player on my board. This pick might be even better than the Eagles getting Mitchell at 22 -- the Lions trading up to get Arnold makes it close. -- Muench):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft/rounds

USA Today (24. Detroit Lions (from Dallas Cowboys): CB Terrion Arnold, Alabama.  The home team jumps up five spots for the first-team All-American who features swagger, production and toughness. And the secondary looks a whole lot better with Arnold and Carlton Davis III joining 2023 second-rounder Brian Branch. But Arnold is the complete package, with sensational ball skills (5 INTs in 2023), smarts and a willingness to stick a ball carrier – all traits that will sing in Motown. And, like departed DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, he can play just about anywhere in the defensive backfield.): https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2024/04/25/nfl-draft-picks-first-round-tracker-2024-live-updates/73378262007/

Pride of Detroit (No. 24: Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama - Terrion Arnold was not the first corner selected in the 2024 NFL Draft but he was the highest-rated on many analyst’s boards. Loaded with confidence and intelligence, Arnold is the second Alabama player corner to land in Detroit in consecutive years, following last year’s acquisition of Brian Branch.):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2024/4/25/24138116/detroit-lions-2024-nfl-draft-picks-tracker-results-full-coverage
