Final 2024 Mock Draft Round Up - Wednesday Update

NFL.com Dan Jeremiah (29. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  The Lions have done a ton of homework on the cornerback class. I'm not sure which player they're targeting. In this case, the decision would come down to McKinstry versus Nate Wiggins. Detroit opts to reunite Kool-Aid with his college teammate, Brian Branch.) (4-22-24):  https://www.nfl.com/news/daniel-jeremiah-2024-nfl-mock-draft-4-0

NFL.com Davis (29. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  The Lions' culture has been clearly established, and McKinstry fits it very well with his down-in/down-out toughness. After all, the young man went through his pro day -- and performed quite well -- despite knowing he needed foot surgery.) (4-24-24):  https://www.nfl.com/news/charles-davis-2024-nfl-mock-draft-3-0-pats-select-j-j-mccarthy-at-no-3-vikings-snatch-drake-maye

CBS Douzable (29. DE Darius Robinson: Robinson fits in nicely in DC Aaron Glenn's defense moving up and down the defensive line. He'll hopefully make things easier for Aidan Hutchinson.) (4-24-24):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-ex-nfl-player-has-patriots-going-non-qb-at-no-3-steelers-and-bears-adding-playmakers/

Fox sports Klatt (29. CB Cooper DeJean, Iowa:  The Lions' draft last year was Big Ten, Midwest-heavy, especially with players who produced. DeJean fits that mold. He's a perfect Lion. This guy has great instincts. He is always around the football. In a lot of ways, he would have been and was Iowa’s best offensive player. He was their best chance to score. They were going to start putting him on offense when he hurt himself, so he is coming off an injury, but, to me, this one just makes a lot of sense.) NBC sports Rogers (29. Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State:  Robinson is raw but his pure explosiveness to pin his ears back and fire off the ball could work in Detroit across from Aidan Hutchinson.) (4-24-24):  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-5-0-broncos-trade-up-for-qb-bowers-slides-bills-take-surprise-wr-in-rogers-final-mock

NBC Sports Dvorchak (29. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:  The Lions have the luxury of being one of the true “best player available” teams. They have needs, but none are glaring. McKinstry is the best corner on the board and possibly the best player. He would step into a starting role opposite Carlton Davis from day one.) FTW D'Andrea (29. Darius Robinson, Missouri - Needs: EDGE, CB, S, WR.  Robinson doesn’t have the career numbers of a first round edge rusher, but that’s a feature, not a bug. He played his first three seasons at Missouri at tackle before shifting to end, leading to a breakthrough 14-tackle for loss, 8.5-sack 2023. He followed that up with a starring role at the Senior Bowl, earning first round buzz.  He’s a 6-foot-5, 285-pound powerhouse who is equally proficient at standing up blockers and stopping the run or shedding them and slicing his way to the pocket. While he lacks elite top line speed, he can put his hand in the dirt and devastate offensive linemen up front. He’d get the chance to thrive back in his hometown cleaning up the devastation Aidan Hutchinson wreaks.) (4-24-24):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-mock-draft-patriots-trade-raiders-broncos-bo-nix-vikings-jayden-daniels

DetroitLions.com Twentyman (29. OL Graham Barton, Duke. I think this is another situation where Holmes can't get his card turned in fast enough if Barton is there because most have him going somewhere in the late teens and early 20s so maybe I'm willing this into existence.  A versatile lineman who can essentially play all five positions upfront, Barton started his career at center and moved to left tackle and projects as a Swiss Army Knife upfront for a team.  "It's hard to overlook," Holmes said in last week's pre-draft press conference about the offensive line. "I don't care who you got at quarterback. I don't care if you've got more of a pocket guy or a scrambler. I don't care what it is. Offensive line is critical and if you don't have one it can make life hard in a lot of areas."  Barton would add to Detroit's depth upfront and projects as a starting center or guard of the future. Some draft analysts consider him the top interior offensive lineman in the class and getting a player regarded that highly at No. 29 would be a big win for the Lions.) (4-24-24):  https://www.detroitlions.com/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-final-selection-barton-williams-mccarthy

ESPN Nation (29. Eric Woodyard's pick: Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama.  One of the Lions' biggest priorities is to upgrade the defense -- even after a strong free agency period. Not only is Detroit addressing a pass defense that allowed 7.8 yards per pass attempt (second worst), but the Alabama pipeline continues to roll after the Lions selected WR Jameson Williams in 2022, and RB Jahmyr Gibbs and DB Brian Branch in 2023.) (4-24-23):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2024/story/_/id/39963070/mock-draft-2024-nfl-nation-first-round-predictions

PFN Broback (29. Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota:  Detroit’s defense plays with infectious energy, and now they need to find the right guys who can elevate the talent level. Tyler Nubin comes from an infectious energy program with P.J. Fleck’s Minnesota Golden Gophers, making him a great fit.  Nubin is also a certified playmaker and has been the best player on defense for the last couple of years. He’s a ballhawk with a knack for getting the ball back to his team’s offense, and the Lions will love having that on the back end of their defense. 61. DT Kris Jenkins.  73. WR Devontez Walker) (4-24-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/joe-broback-3-round-2024-nfl-mock-draft-april-24/

Wire Editors Final (29. DT Johnny Newton, Illinois:  Newton is an outstanding interior pass rusher, a slippery and powerful force on the inside in the mold of Gerald McCoy and Tommie Harris. Adding Newton to a line that features rising star Alim McNeill and veteran acquisition D.J. Reader gives the Lions formidable depth and disruptive ability between the tackles. He’s a force multiplier for Detroit’s defense, making Aidan Hutchinson better but also helping mask some holes in the secondary and improving the ability to defend against mobile quarterbacks taking off up the middle. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire) (4-24-24):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-mock-draft-final-first-round-projections-major-trades-up-top/

CBS Podell (29. DE Chop Robinson:  WR Ladd McConkey:  Ladd McConkey may not have the size Dan Campbell craves, but his refined route tree and ability to stop and start with shimmy on a dime helps him get open with ease. The Lions could use a reliable third pass-catcher after Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. McConkey provides Goff another security blanket over the middle.) (4-23-24):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-wide-receivers-offensive-linemen-make-up-half-of-round-1s-32-selections/

Fox sports Rang (29. Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State:  The Lions are coming off their first division crown in 30 seasons, which they earned by playing with the same aggressive mentality that their general manager Brad Holmes showed with several bold picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. Detroit already boasts a dynamic receiving corps, but adding Coleman's size and physicality could make it the league's best, while also providing the club with some flexibility with star Amon Ra-St. Brown as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. ) (4-23-24):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-nfl-mock-draft-5-qbs-go-in-first-11-picks-3-wide-receivers-in-top-10

CBS Breech (29. CB Nate Wiggins:  The Lions already added some corner help this offseason by trading for Carlton Davis, but after cutting Cam Sutton, Detroit decides that it still needs some corner help, so the Lions grab Wiggins.) (4-23-24):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-six-quarterbacks-go-in-first-round-steelers-make-big-splash-with-trade-into-top-12/

NFL.com Brooks (26. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  The Lions must upgrade the secondary to neutralize top quarterbacks in the NFC. McKinstry is a sticky bump-and-run corner with outstanding instincts, awareness and ball skills.)  (4-23-24):  https://www.nfl.com/news/bucky-brooks-2024-nfl-mock-draft-4-0-dt-byron-murphy-ii-is-first-defender-taken-bengals-select-wr

PFF McGuinness Final (29. CB Nate Wiggins:  The Lions stick at Pick No. 29 and have their choice between Wiggins and Kool-Aid McKinstry. I wouldn’t have an issue with either pick, so I trusted PFF lead draft analyst Trevor Sikkema having Wiggins ranked above McKinstry on the final PFF big board. He earned an 83.9 PFF coverage grade in 2023, posting marks of 74.0 or better in both man and zone coverage.) (4-23-24):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2024-nfl-mock-draft-significant-trades-rams-jayden-daniels

MLive Meinke (29. OC Jackson Powers-Johnson:  Like I said at No. 15, I strongly considered a trade up for Terrion Arnold. If the former Alabama star falls that far, I expect Brad Holmes to make calls about it. Holmes loves to move up and down the board to target players he’s convicted on, and Arnold feels like the kind of cornerback he’d have conviction on. But with the Lions holding late picks in the early rounds, and no pick in the fourth round at all, Holmes is in a very different place than when he traded up for Jameson Williams and was prepared to trade up for Jahmyr Gibbs (before ultimately landing him in a trade down). I also think trading out of the first round is possible, which would stack opportunities for Holmes to move for the players he likes best on Day 2. His recent successes there -- including Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta -- show the upside of that approach.  After Denver traded up for Bo Nix at No. 28, I decided to hold Detroit at No. 29. Holmes could go a lot of directions with the pick, and I decided to go with the top center in the country. Powers-Johnson began his career at guard and played on both sides of the line of scrimmage before settling in at center last season. He allowed no sacks and just one pressure in his career. At 328 pounds, he’s a physical player who moves well. Detroit will also love the versatility. Powers-Johnson could back up all three interior positions as a rookie -- much like Graham Glasgow did last year -- before moving into a starting role where he’s most needed in Year 2. It’s not the sexiest pick, and won’t help the Lions defend the pass or get after the quarterback next season. But Holmes has thrived by not chasing needs in the early rounds, instead prioritizing the best player and fit possible. In Powers-Johnson, he lands exactly that, and fortifies the team’s biggest strength for years to come.) PFN Helms Final (47.  DE Adisa Isaac.  Trade: The Giants receive the 29th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft; the Lions receive picks 47 and 70, plus a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.  61. OG Cooper Beebe.  70. CB Andru Phillips.  73. DT Leonard Taylor III) (4-23-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/will-helms-3-round-2024-nfl-mock-draft-april-23/

NBC sports Writers (29. Darius Robinson, EDGE, Missouri:  Detroit would have loved to see McKinstry or Wiggins fall here, but they’ll instead add a freakish three-tech/EDGE in Robinson to complement havoc-maven Aidan Hutchinson. (Froton)) (4-23-24):  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2024-four-qbs-taken-in-top-5-of-nbc-sports-collab-mock-draft

NFL.com Edholm (29. OC Zach Frazier:  It was between Frazier and CB Kool-Aid McKinstry for this spot, and it was a close call. But during the Brad Holmes-Dan Campbell era, the Lions have tended to use their first-round picks on their kind of guy, and Frazier just screams Lions. He has the same gritty makeup as injury-prone C Frank Ragnow and can provide Detroit with depth at all three interior spots.) (4-22-24):  https://www.nfl.com/news/eric-edholm-2024-nfl-mock-draft-3-0-six-qbs-three-trades-eagles-move-up-for-cb

CBS Galko (29.  OC Jackson Powers-Johnson:  The Lions could be among the most likely trade back option teams late in the first round, especially if the cornerbacks and top interior defensive linemen are off the board. Their biggest need is likely guard, and if they aren't able to move to get a top offensive linemen, adding Powers-Johnson, who can play guard or center, fits well.) NBC Sports Simms (29. Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State:  “He’s a totally different animal than Aidan Hutchinson. You can play him on the weak side and go, ‘Hey, you don’t have to worry about the run game as much, and fly up field and get after it. Cause some disruption. And I think that’s an area of their football team that needs an improvement.”) (4-22-24):  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-chris-simms-caleb-williams-jaden-daniels-jj-mccarthy-drake-maye-bo-nix-michael-penix-jr

PFN Caplan (29. Ennis Rakestraw Jr., CB, Missouri:  A favorite of some defensive coaches we’ve spoken with during the draft process, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. should transition well to the next level and is scheme versatile. The reason why Rakestraw is expected to last this late in Round 1 is because of his lack of speed.  Pre-Draft Needs: CB, EDGE, G, S, WR, DT.  Other Considerations: Should Chop Robinson or any of the edge rushers who went off the board before this pick fall to them, they’d go here instead of Rakestraw due to the value.) (4-22-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/adam-caplan-2024-nfl-mock-draft-april-22/

CFN (29. Amarius Mims, OT Georgia - Position Needs: EDGE, DB, OG.  This would be where a pass rushing Robinson - Chop or Darius - would go if either one was available to go on the other side of Aidan Hutchinson, but this is too far for Mims to slide. He’s not a need for Detroit, but he’s a top 15 talent who should slide.) (4-22-24):   https://collegefootballnews.com/news/nfl-mock-draft-2024-first-round-where-will-the-quarterbacks-go

Yahoo McDonald/Tice Final (29. Detroit Lions — Michael Hall Jr., DL, Ohio State:  A bit of a surprise! Defensive tackle isn’t the biggest immediate need for the Lions with the signing of D.J. Reader and presence of Alim McNeill, but Hall has a different kind of juice that the Lions (and every team) could use on the interior. Hall ran a 4.75 40-yard dash at 299 pounds and offers significant pass-rush upside as a defensive tackle.) 32 Teams Beatwriter Mock Draft (29. Cooper DeJean (CB ) | Iowa:  “The Lions got good returns on two Iowa players they drafted last year, Sam LaPorta and Jack Campbell, so they go back to the well again for DeJean, one of the most versatile defensive backs in the class and someone who has excellent return ability.” (Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press)) (4-22-24):  https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2024-04-22/nfl-mock-draft-live-team-reporters-picks

ESPN Reid (29. CB  Cooper DeJean. 61. WR Ricky Pearsall.  73. OG Cooper Beebe. 164. DE Brennan Jackson. 201. DT Jowon Briggs.  206. CB Johnny Dixon.  249. OT Ethan Driskell):  https://www.detroitlions.com/news/mock-draft-2024-final-predictions-robinson-mckinstry-frazier

PFN Catalina (29. Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa:  Some consider Cooper DeJean a safety, but I think he can be a cornerback and do it all in between. While some are slowly shifting him to being a back-end roamer, I think it’s important not to pigeonhole him. DeJean adds supreme athletic ability to a Lions team that can use and max out his ability in the secondary.  61. DE Bralen Trice.  58. OG Christian Mahogany) (4-21-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/tony-catalina-2024-nfl-mock-draft-april-21/

CBS Sullivan (29. DT Johnny Newton:  Newton continues what has been a youth movement in recent drafts for the Lions along their defense line.) (4-21-24):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-raiders-trade-up-for-michael-penix-jr-chargers-land-two-pass-catchers/

PFN Cummings (29. Johnny Newton, DT, Illinois:  The Lions have D.J. Reader and Alim McNeill, but there’s still a sense that something is missing in their DT rotation. Johnny Newton fills the gap with his hyper-elite flexibility and gap disruption, and he has the versatility to play from 3-tech to 5-tech.  61.  Adisa Isaac, EDGE, Penn State:  Adisa Isaac is a phenomenal value pick at this spot — with the burst, agility, bend capacity, power, and motor in pursuit to complement Aidan Hutchinson well.  73. Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida:  Ricky Pearsall’s versatility fits Ben Johnson’s offense like a glove, and he has the hands to be a clutch weapon on third downs.  164. CB Nehemiah Pritchett.  206. OC Dylan McMahon.  249. David Martin-Robinson) (4-20-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/cummings-7-round-2024-nfl-mock-draft/

NFL.com Reuter (29. DE Darius Robinson:  The long-time Lions fan joins his hometown team to give Aidan Hutchinson some help on the edge. Robinson lined up in multiple places during his career at Missouri, showcasing a versatility you can expect defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to utilize, as well. 61. CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr.  73. OG Mason McCormick. 164. WR Ainias Smith.  201. CB M.J. Devonshire.  205. S Sione Vaki.  249. OT Nathan Thomas) (4-19-24):  https://www.nfl.com/news/seven-round-2024-nfl-mock-draft-round-1

CBS Fornelli (29. S Tyler Nubin: CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  The Jones fracture McKinstry suffered in his foot has left a cloud over his draft stock, but he's a talented player at a position of need for the Lions, and he has that tough-guy mentality you know this front office covets.) (4-19-24):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-only-2-qbs-taken-in-top-5-as-teams-prioritize-other-positions-raiders-giants-make-trade/

CBS Edwards (29. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  A year after taking Alabama defensive back Brian Branch in the second round, Detroit now takes his former teammate in the first round. Kool-Aid McKinstry was at one time viewed as a top-10 selection and that potential is still inside of him.  61. OG Cooper Beebe.  73. S Javon Bullard.  164. WR Jalen Coker.  201. RB Tyrone Tracy.  205. DT Jordan Jefferson  249. PFN Jones (29. Byron Murphy II, DT, Texas:  The Detroit Lions don’t need an interior defensive lineman immediately, but Byron Murphy II’s value is too great to pass up in the latter portion of the first round. The former Texas DT’s placement in mock drafts is sporadic, although he does have the potential to be drafted in the top 15.  At 6’0 1/2” and 297 pounds, Murphy is an interior pocket disruptor. His high-energy play and unbelievable twitch and flexibility cause havoc through the middle, while he also has the explosive burst to win directly off the snap.  61. CB Kris Abrams-Draine.  73. DE Marshawn Kneeland)  (4-3-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/owain-jones-2024-nfl-mock-draft-april-19/

CBS Jones (29. CB Cooper DeJean:  More teams have DeJean as a safety/nickel than cornerback/nickel. For Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, DeJean can play in a number of different spots.) (4-18-24):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-falcons-select-kirk-cousins-eventual-replacement-five-qbs-go-in-first-round/

NFL.com Parr (29. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  I had Kool-Aid going to Detroit in my first mock and I’m sticking with him here. The release of Cameron Sutton left the Lions thin at cornerback once again.) (4-18-24):  https://www.nfl.com/news/dan-parr-2024-nfl-mock-draft-2-0

Fox sports Helman/Vitali (29. EDGE Laitu Latu, UCLA:  I can't in good conscience actually think Latu would fall to the Lions, but then again, who would be shocked? Detroit has drafted extraordinarily well under general manager Brad Holmes and he's shown the willingness to just take good players. Latu rotating with Marcus Davenport opposite Aidan Hutchinson with now D.J. Reader and the ever-underrated Alim McNeill on the interior? That is scary for everyone else in the NFC.) (4-18-24):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-nfl-mock-draft-chargers-giants-land-star-wideouts-qbs-go-1-4

Draft wire Popejoy (29.  C Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon:  The Lions love big, physical offensive linemen with a nasty streak and Jackson Powers-Johnson fits the bill.  61. DE Darius Robinson.  73. CB Max Melton) (4-18-24):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-mock-draft-caleb-williams-drake-maye-4/

Draft Tek (29. DE Chop Robinson:  The Detroit Lions have a talented core and a balanced roster that will allow them to sit at Pick 29 and wait for top talent in a few key positions to slip into their greedy little hands. Prominent on that list of positions is Edge Rusher, where a bookend for emerging star Aidan Hutchinson can speed Aaron Glenn's ongoing defensive overhaul. Chop Robinson is just such a talent at this slot.  A twitchy rusher with prototypical size, Robinson has the kind of explosiveness and bend that will have offensive coordinators rethinking their constant double-teams on Hutch. His sack totals were modest in college, but his 18 percent pressure rate suggests he can be part of a fearsome front four. The other positions for Lions fans to watch as the draft board shakes out are Cornerback and Guard.  --Jud Branam, Lions Analyst.  61.  CB Elijah Jones:  Lions GM Brad Holmes is known to defy conventional wisdom by taking a guy way out of synch with most prognostications, drawing a chorus of howls until it turns out the kid can really play. See Jamyr Gibbs and Sam Laporta last year.  This year's eyebrow raiser could be Elijah Jones, a Boston College Cornerback with length, speed and playing experience who nonetheless is ranked a little lower on a lot of boards. The son of a Brand Nubian rap group member and a L'Oreal model, Jones promises to bring high-end swag along with his 4.44 speed into the Lions' locker room. --Jud Branam, Lions Analyst.  73.  WR Ja'Lynn Polk:  With last year's WR2 Josh Reynolds taking his free agent talents to Denver, the Lions have a chance to add new blood to their receiver room.  Washington's Ja'Lynn Polk is like a younger version of Reynolds in many respects. He has size but is not a true big receiver, he has enough speed to get downfield without being an absolute burner and he has good hands and a willingness to battle for every contested ball.  Add it up and you've got a possession receiver plus who could contribute in Ben Johnson's creative, tight-window sets. His middling 40 time of 4.52 is reminiscent of another Lions draft pick - uber-productive WR1 Amon-Ra St. Brown. 164. K Joshua Karty.  201. RB Miyan Williams.  207. OT Giovanni Manu.  249. PFF Jahnke (32. Detroit Lions (From Kansas City): CB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama:  Projected trade: Lions receive Pick Nos. 32, 159; Chiefs receive Pick No. 29.  Cornerback was a problem position for Detroit last season. They added both Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson in free agency, but neither player has a PFF coverage grade above 70 in either of the last two seasons. McKinstry doesn’t need to be a Week 1 starter but should be able to overtake one of those players on the depth chart by 2025.) CBS Trapasso (29.  WR Adonai Mitchell:  Instead of going cornerback, the Lions turn their attention once again to the offensive side of the ball and swing for the fences with a burner outside receiver.) SN (29. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama (5-11, 199 pounds):  The Lions still need to address corner after their veteran additions didn't pan out last offseason. McKinstry has some elite playmaking flashes with shutdown-level upside.  61. Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida (6-1, 189 pounds):  The Lions have Amon-Ra St. Brown to dominate the slot and are hopeful Jameson Williams can provide more soon, but it makes sense to add Pearsall, a route-running technician with some big-play flair.  73. Christian Haynes, G, Connecticut (6-3, 317 pounds):  The Lions locked up Graham Glasgow and signed Kevin Zeitler with Jonah Jackson leaving, but they could use some solid run-blocking depth inside.) PFN Caswell (29. Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama:  Remember those videos of Brad Holmes and the Lions’ front office yelling and celebrating in joy when they got the guy they wanted in the 2023 NFL Draft? If this is the result, that’s likely to happen again.  One of the most significant weaknesses for Detroit in 2023 was their secondary. Although they’ve made some moves in free agency, none of that would compare to Terrion Arnold falling in their lap.  61. DE Marshawn Kneeland.  73. DT Braden Fiske) (4-17-24):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/josiah-caswell-2024-nfl-mock-draft-april-17/

NFL.com Schrager (29. OC Zach Frazier:  Frazier is a former state wrestling champion who's nasty, versatile and hungry. This is a Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell prospect if there ever was one, with the West Virginia product oozing bulldog characteristics. Walter football Walt (29. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB:  The Lions wanted Devon Witherspoon at No. 6, so perhaps they’ll obtain a cornerback with this pick.  Kool-Aid McKinstry was a rare freshman starter for Nick Saban. He has the size and athleticism to be an elite cornerback.  61. Detroit Lions: Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  The Lions have a great offensive line, save for right guard. That could be addressed with this pick.  Layden Robinson isn’t very athletic, but he’s a violent blocker who has impressed this season.  73.  Max Melton, CB:  Here’s another cornerback for the Lions, who really need to address their secondary.  Max Melton is a terrific athlete who is incredibly fast that receivers can’t outrun him.  164. Ty'Ron Hooper, LB, Missouri:  The Lions could stand to improve their coverage over the middle of the field.  Ty’Ron Hooper is not a finished product. He’ll need some major development.) (4-16-24):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2024.php

Walter football Charlie (29. Jackson Powers-Johnson, C, Oregon:  The Lions lost left guard Jonah Jackson in free agency, while center Frank Ragnow is aging and has a chronic foot ailment. Kevin Zeitler is also a temporary stop-gap addition. Powers-Johnson could start out competing with Graham Glasgow at guard and replace Ragnow in a year or two at center. It took some time with an odd journey, but eventually Powers-Johnson turned himself into an impactful player for the Ducks. Powers-Johnson was a backup in 2021 before playing defensive line in an emergency role to close out that season. He was back to being a backup in 2022, but took over as the starting center in 2023 and had a superb season. The 6-foot-3, 334-pound Powers-Johnson is a heavy center who looks like a safe pick to be a solid pro starter. He is strong, nasty, and can blast open holes in the ground game. Powers-Johnson could be a starter at guard or center.   61.  Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State:  Josh Reynolds left in free agency, and the Lions could use another receiver to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.  In 2023, Coleman totaled 50 catches of 658 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder has good size with functional quickness, athleticism, and excellent ball skills. In 2022 for Michigan State, he recorded 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns while playing. Coleman opened the 2023 season, and his career as a Seminole, with a monster game of nine catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns versus LSU. Coleman also got the better of a future NFL corner in Wake Forest’s Caelen Carson in their matchup. Coleman hurt his draft stock with a slow 40 time at the combine. 73.  Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  Nehemiah Pritchett, CB, Auburn:  The Lions could use more cornerback competition and have hosted Pritchett on a top-30 visit.  A number of team sources like Pritchett as a third- or fourth-round sleeper who could turn into a nice value pick. In 2023, he had 22 tackles, an interception and three breakups. During 2022, he recorded 37 tackles and eight passes broken up. The 6-foot, 190-pounder has good size and quickness. He can play zone or man coverage while being a nice corner for taking on taller, longer receivers. Fast receivers give Pritchett some issues, and he will need to be coached on that for that for the NFL. Pritchett could start out as a backup who helps on special teams with the potential to develop into being a starter.  164. Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU:  Wingo would give the Lions an interior designated pass rusher to provide depth behind D.J. Reader and Alim McNeil.  201. Trade acquisition Carlton Davis and free-agent signing Amik Robertson figure to start on the outside with 2023 second-round pick Brian Branch holding down the slot, but a first-round CB shouldn’t be out of the question for the Lions.  Although Kool-Aid McKinstry might not boast the upside of Terrion Arnold, his Alabama teammate, he is a dependable perimeter option with excellent football intelligence. OL is next up at +275, while DL isn’t far behind at +300. Byron Murphy and Jer’Zhan Newton were strongly considered, and would bring a tidy +300 payout. However, Barton falling to No. 29 gives Detroit a plug-and-play lineman who can be an instant starter at LG while also being able to kick outside in a pinch.  Barton was a beast in 2022, recording 98.7% block efficiency with just two sacks and eight hurries to go with a sensational 88.2 PFF overall grade that ranked fourth among all FBS tackles that year. In fact, he was one of only two tackles nationally that earned 85th percentile grades in both run blocking and pass protection that season, solidifying his excellence in both phases of the game. Why not do it again? McKinstry might be the best cornerback in the class at matching and mirroring opposing receivers, and even if he’s not an elite athlete, he’s a very good one who held up well for years against SEC competition. It’s an elite first step. And not just elite, but elite, elite in that department. There are concerns about his all-around game, sure. But that’s why he’s here at Pick 29. Robinson would provide an immediate spark to the pass rush, and could be one of the steals of the draft when all is said and done. With all of my favorite first-round offensive line and the top cornerback options gone, I’m all in on the Penn State pass rusher. And he’s no consolation prize. Draft Network Melo (29. Detroit Lions - Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama: The Lions should continue improving their pass defense, which is arguably their biggest weakness. With the likes of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Emmanuel Moseley, and Kindle Vildor playing on expiring contracts, there's a need for general manager Brad Holmes to address the cornerback position early. Alabama's Kool-Aid McKinstry pairs size with athleticism, leading to a desirable overall make-up.) (1-28-24):  https://thedraftnetwork.com/2024/01/28/nfl-mock-draft-2024-playmakers

PFN Dalton Miller (30. Kalen King, CB, Penn State:  Dan Campbell, meet knee biter. Knee biter, Dan Campbell.  Now that the introductions are done, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. This isn’t an outstanding cornerback class, but injuries and one-year contracts at the position necessitate the potentiality. Kalen King‘s downhill trigger and physicality against the run and screen game more than makeup for his underwhelming size.  Harrison bullied King in their matchup, and the same will likely happen against other physical receivers at the next level. But King won’t have to face a generational prospect weekly, and his route recognition and reactionary athleticism make him a fun fit in this defense.) Biglead Phillips (28. Detroit Lions: Khyree Jackson, CB, Oregon:  The Lions' cupboard is bare at cornerback, it's time to change that. Jackson is a physical specimen at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds with great speed.) (1-11-24):  https://www.thebiglead.com/posts/nfl-mock-draft-2024-bears-caleb-williams-patriots-01hkqzwbgyf2
