7 First-Round NFL Draft Prospects Who Could Slide to Day 2 (Peter Woods, DT, Clemson: Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods is another Tigers-based defender who hasn't fully met initial expectations. Voted a top-10 overall prospect nationally in high school, the flashes of dominance were fleeting. Woods went from recording 8.5 tackles for loss in 2024 to just 3.5 (with two sacks) this past campaign. Even in a weaker interior defensive line class, there's no guarantee he's a first-round selection.) 2026 NFL Draft top defensive linemen (8. DT Peter Woods, Clemson: Woods is a prototypical athlete who almost defies the laws of physics with how someone so big can move so fast and gracefully. His technique will need some coaching up, but he possesses all of the physical tools and more to be a great defensive tackle in the NFL.) 2026 NFL Draft preview: 5 defensive tackles that could interest Lions (2. Peter Woods, Clemson - 6-2, 298. 1.67 seconds 10-yard split in 40-yard dash. Woods wins more with quickness and explosive hands than he does with raw power. At just 21 years old, there's a good base to work with and a lot of room for growth. Woods is a terrific athlete as Clemson used him on 15 offensive reps in goal line and short-yardage situations leading to eight carries for 15 yards and two touchdowns.) 2026 NFL draft: Latest buzz on No. 2 pick, bold predictions (Reid's notes: For the first time since 2021, it is possible that no defensive tackles could be selected in Round 1. I haven't found a team that has a true first-round grade on any defensive tackle. With Caleb Banks (Florida) recently having foot surgery, he's likely to be a Day 2 pick. The inconsistencies of Peter Woods (Clemson) throughout the season and during the predraft process have caused most teams I have spoken with to put an early-to-mid second-round mark on him. ) (4-10-26): https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2026/story/_/id/48428742/2026-nfl-draft-latest-buzz-rumors-news-mocks-predictions-jets-lions-chargers-panthers
Ranking the top 10 defensive linemen in the 2026 NFL Draft (1. Peter Woods, Clemson, 6-2 ¹/₂, 298. Regressed in 2025 but his 2024 tape shows flashes of dominance. Was he out of position? Motor runs hot enough to believe he will become more consistent. Twitchy, with first-step explosiveness. Needs more diverse rush plan after go-to move. Frequently double-teamed.) Clemson’s 2026 NFL Draft Class Could be Historical (Peter Woods, Defensive Tackle, 6-2, 302 pounds: Peter Woods, a second-team All-American last season for Clemson, has proven to be one of the most polarizing prospects in this year’s draft cycle. Some sites, like CBS Sports, have the defensive tackle going as early as pick No. 18, while others have seen him drop to the late first round or second round after reduced stats at Clemson last year. As a sophomore, Woods notched 22 solo tackles, with 8.5 for loss and three sacks. As a junior, he finished with 27 solo tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Granted, the Alabaster, Ala., native faced double teams in most all of the 12 games he started, but the shift in production has piqued questions among scouts. Still, Kiper has Woods as his first defensive tackle off the board. “The reason why I went Woods is because No. 1, he’s a guy you roll the dice and hope he can become what you thought he was going to be at Clemson, which was a dominant player,” Kiper said. “Well then you say, ‘If he wasn’t dominant at Clemson, how could he be in the NFL?’ Well, the talent of Peter Woods is through the roof.” Both the Chargers and the Minnesota Vikings are looking to add stability and juice to their defensive lines and hold late first-round picks. Woods could potentially fall into either teams’ open hands.) (4-9-26): https://www.theclemsoninsider.com/2026/04/09/clemsons-2026-nfl-draft-class-could-be-historical/
Is Peter Woods Lions' Defensive Tackle of Future? (4-8-26): https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/onsi/news/is-peter-woods-lions-future-defensive-tackle
Five Players Detroit Lions Cannot Draft (Clemson DT Peter Woods: Woods is an interesting prospect with some versatility, but there are legitimate concerns about his lack of production in 2025. A defensive tackle with some pass-rush ability, Woods' statitistics dropped fairly significantly in his final collegiate season. After recording 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 2024, Woods notched just 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 2025. He has some upside due to his athleticism and a quick first step, but lacked consistency last year which has called into question just how much he'll bring at the next level. The Lions have a need for some interior depth, but should focus those efforts on securing a true nose tackle rather than another hybrid interior lineman like Woods.) 2026 NFL Draft Rankings: Interior defensive linemen - PFF (3. Peter Woods, Clemson Tigers - Big board rank: 33. Woods offers an ideal blend of size, strength and athleticism, with true scheme versatility. His explosive first step and ability to convert speed to power make him disruptive at the line of scrimmage. If he expands his pass-rush plan, he can turn pressures into more impactful production.) The safest pick, biggest gamble and more 2026 NFL Draft superlatives (Who I'm buying low - Peter Woods: Peter Woods was one of the most disappointing prospects in the country in 2025, and the only explanation may be some sort of injury. He's a mega-talented player who was steady and impactful in his first two seasons at Clemson, despite playing out of position at times in 2023. There are still impressive reps on film, but taking him high in the first round is a gamble. Woods needs to ramp up his effort and elevate his play if he's going to be the impact player he's shown flashes of as a rookie. He has good power and leverage against double teams and flashes lateral quickness on stunts to get home. Teams want consistency, and his uneven 2025 tape raises red flags.) 2026 NFL Draft defensive line rankings: Game-wrecking potential on display with top 2 guys, but will they realize it? (1. Peter Woods, Clemson: Woods has flashed like an interior game-wrecker who has the quickness to shut a play down in the blink of an eye and the overall athleticism to play across the line. Woods has light feet for his size and can impact the run or pass on every down. His top-notch combination of strength and agility would fit in any type of defense, but there are still more flashes than sustained high-end play in Woods’ game so far. Woods underwhelmed this past season on a disappointing Clemson squad. Missed tackles and a lack of pass rush refinement and effort show up a bit too often at this point in time in Woods’ film. His lack of length might be the culprit (31 ¼-inch arm length) for both negatives. While Woods does have the ability to blow pass blockers back and collapse the pocket, but if he doesn’t land his first move, he becomes a bit too easily nullified as a rusher. He’s essentially a sawed-off shotgun that sometimes misses. He doesn’t capitalize enough on his best attribute: using his quick feet and hands to get into the backfield and leave offensive linemen in a daze. He’s a young player, and the talent is there, but I think he’ll be all over the place on teams’ boards. — Nate Tice) (3-30-26): https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/article/2026-nfl-draft-defensive-line-rankings-game-wrecking-potential-on-display-with-top-2-guys-but-will-they-realize-it-221235219.html
2026 NFL draft: Tannenbaum's prospect targets in Rounds 1-7 (The players I'd be targeting in Round 2 - Peter Woods, DT, Clemson: There is a definite chance that Woods goes in Round 1. He was getting early-pick buzz last summer, but a lack of big-time production (only 33 tackles and two sacks last season) caused a lot of evaluators to cool on him. If there's any shot I can get him in Round 2, I'm making it happen. Woods has explosive traits and could make a real difference on the interior. He might be a little undersized at 6-foot-3 and 298 pounds (with sub-32-inch arms), but I'm banking on the potential, upside and value on Day 2. Now, I'm just crossing my fingers that he's still there.) (3-27-26): https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2026/story/_/id/48305662/2026-nfl-draft-tannenbaum-board-prospects-targets-seven-rounds-gm
2026 NFL Draft Mailbag: Latest draft stock for R Mason Thomas, first round outlook for the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings (Biggest first round need for the Minnesota Vikings. The secondary has been my main point of emphasis, but with the slide of Peter Woods (Clemson), it is making me second-guess that perspective. I would have a hard time passing up Woods, except if Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy slides to that spot. If the team goes safety, Dillon Thieneman (Oregon) and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren (Toledo) are both intriguing options. McCoy would be my top target depending on how the board walls, followed by Woods, and then either of the safeties listed.) Doubts Mount As Clemson Star Peter Woods’ Draft Stock Slips After Pro Day Decision (3-12-25): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/cfb/doubts-clemson-peter-woods-draft-stock-slips-pro-day/
Clemson Pro Day: Woods runs a 10-yard sprint instead of a 40, Klubnik throws it deep for NFL scouts (CLEMSON — One of this cycle’s more polarizing NFL draft prospects, Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods, did just about everything for pro scouts at the program’s pro day. But it was the 30 yards he didn’t run on March 12 that raised some eyebrows. Woods ran a 10-yard split but not the traditional 40-yard dash. The reason proved to an ACC Network Extra broadcast was a hamstring injury suffered recently in training. The scouts’ consensus for Woods’ 10-yard split, according to Clemson, was 1.67 seconds, which would have ranked second among defensive tackles at the NFL Combine this year. Woods skipped workouts at the combine in Indianapolis in late February. That means Woods, who has been rated as a potential top-15 pick by some NFL draftniks but sits in the low 30s with others, hasn’t logged a time in the much-hyped scouting sprint. He didn’t bench press, either, at Clemson’s pro day or the combine. Woods did mostly everything else, though. He logged a 4.54-second time in the short shuttle and a 7.70 in the three-cone drill. He also had a 29-inch vertical jump and an 8-foot, 8-inch broad jump. According to the MockDraftable.com database, an average time for an interior defensive lineman is just under 7.7 seconds in the three-cone drill and 4.65 seconds in the short shuttle. But that also includes run-stuffers who are significantly larger than Woods, who has leaned himself to 6-foot-2, 302 pounds. That hamstring injury probably factored into Woods’ results, because The Athletic college football reporter Bruce Feldman had the Tigers’ interior defender with a a 33-inch vertical this past offseason in his annual “Freaks List,” along with 4.86-second 40-yard dash. Those measurables will be heavily scrutinized, but Woods and fellow defensive lineman T.J. Parker are mainly divisive as prospects because of a lack of production in 2025. That might be somewhat unfair to Woods, who was eating up double teams much of the year, but neither player was a dominant force for a 7-6 Clemson squad. Parker, who had 19.5 tackles for loss as a sophomore, finished with 9.5 as a junior — and three of those came in the finale against South Carolina. Woods followed 8.5 TFLs as a sophomore with 3.5 as a junior. Neither played in Clemson’s Pinstripe Bowl loss to Penn State. Neither made themselves available to the media after their pro day workout.) 5 Prospects Who Should Crush the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine (DL Peter Woods, Clemson: It’s just not fair when a guy this big is also this athletic. The best interior defensive line prospect in this year’s class, Woods’s explosiveness and athleticism was so impressive, the Tigers found creative ways to get him the ball on offense, even letting him find the end zone. Woods wasn’t exactly used most effectively last season on defense, lining up too often as a nose tackle, which led to a dip in production. But his athletic traits haven’t gone anywhere, and any NFL team that puts him in the right role (as an upfield disruptor at the 3-technique) will reap the benefits. Before that happens, we’ll all get to see him put his athleticism on display at the combine, where he’s likely to put up ridiculous numbers for his size.) Winners and losers from Day 1 of NFL Combine drills (Loser: Peter Woods, DT, Clemson - Woods entered the season as my top player and an easy selection for DT1. I'll remain higher than consensus, but the calculus has grown increasingly difficult. His 2025 campaign wasn't as impressive as his show-stopping 2024 film, and his pre-draft process hasn't gotten off to a roaring start. Woods weighed in at 298 pounds, lighter than anticipated and a signal that he might be shedding weight to shed time on his 40-yard dash. Then he didn't run. Likewise, Woods' arm length came in at 31.25 inches, a fourth-percentile mark for interior linemen. It's not the end of the world, given his ability to shed blocks and find solutions with athleticism. Still, it's an extra point of caution, and he didn't put his athletic prowess on paper.) 2026 Scouting Combine: Defensive Tackles Are More Important Than Ever. How Does This Class Measure Up? 2026 NFL Draft DL Rankings: Big Board, Tiers & Predictions (2. Peter Woods, DT, Clemson: Peter Woods didn't meet expectations at Clemson, but flashes of dominance and high-level baseline traits were present. What I want to see at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine (Interior defensive linemen will also be in the spotlight as they jockey for draft positioning. Many will be watching Florida’s Caleb Banks, who is listed at 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds and could be among the most explosive players in the class. Other potential top picks, such as Texas Tech’s Lee Hunter and Clemson’s Peter Woods, have a chance to solidify their first-round statuses, as well.) 2026 NFL Scouting Combine: Who Has the Most to Prove in Indianapolis? (Peter Woods, DL, Clemson: Sometimes, you wonder what coaches think when they’re deploying their players, Part 2. In the case of Clemson defensive lineman Peter Woods, it’s the fact that Woods was deployed as a true nose tackle — either head over the center or shading the center to one side — on 46% of his snaps in the 2025 season. That’s hardly optimal for a guy standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 310 pounds (unofficially, of course), who’s built more like an ideal three-tech attack disruptor. So, when you hear about Woods’ decline in production in 2025 (which really wasn’t that bad; he had the same number of sacks with three, six fewer total pressures at 14 down from 20, and he actually had more solo tackles and stops in 2025 than he did in 2024), remember that sometimes, players are utilized out of position. Woods could put this all to bed by blowing up the pass-rush drills, which he certainly has the skills to do.) However, Woods’ frame (6-foot-3, 315 pounds) and athletic profile still offer significant upside, making him a prime candidate to rebound with a strong combine showing.) 2026 NFL Combine preview: 8 interior defensive linemen the Lions should be scouting (Upside gambles - Peter Woods, 3T-4i, Clemson (6-foot-3, 315): Woods entered the season not only as the top defensive tackle on many analysts’ draft boards, but also as the No. 1 overall player. Unfortunately, like most Clemson players in this class, 2025 was a disaster, and their 2024 tape is a better representation of their skill sets. Clemson deployed Woods all over their defensive line, giving him reps from nose tackle to edge, though he’s been most effective inside at the 3-technique. As the Tigers looked for answers throughout the season, they shifted Woods to nose tackle even more than in previous seasons (45% compared to 30%), despite him slimming down to play the 3T. Overall, that hurt his consistency and exposed some weaknesses in his game. That being said, in a class full of run-stuffing nose tackles, his pass-rush prowess does show up. Woods has explosive foot quickness and can be elusive inside, with a high-running motor and violent hands. He has a solid balance and understands leverage, but is more of a brawler than an anchor point on the line. His lateral quickness is special, allowing him to cover a large pursuit range and work his attack with his teammates. While he is capable of 1- and 2-gapping, he doesn’t win early in his reps, and if he’s not first in landing his punch, he can be controlled. While landing first helps him gain an advantage, he still needs more pass-rushing tools in his bag.) He was the only player in college football to record multiple games with a sack and rushing touchdown in 2025, which speaks to the athleticism for his size. Has experience and success rushing from two-point and three-point stances. Alignment versatility from nose to 5-technique. No false steps out of his stance. Explosive first step. Maintains low pad level before making contact. Can make tight corners when shedding/passing blockers. Impressive balance and change of direction at his weight. Weaknesses: Appears to have shorter arms. Relies heavily on speed-to-power pass rush. 2026 draft: Ten debate-worthy prospects to track at the NFL combine (Peter Woods - Why did his performance and production dip in 2025? Woods' disruptive potential as an explosive interior defender with cat-like quickness and heavy hands is obvious. Listed at 6-3 and 315 pounds, he's a rare find as a defensive tackle who can win with force or finesse at the point of attack. He will blow past blockers with a crafty arm-over maneuver or utilize a powerful fork-lift move to destroy the middle of the pocket. The issue: Woods' traits and tools have not translated into elite production, with the Clemson product totaling five sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss over 35 games. His 2025 stat line is particularly glaring, consisting of just two sacks and 3.5 TFLs in 12 appearances. Did the Tigers' scheme or coaching points prevent him from realizing his potential as a collegian? Scouts will have to closely assess his game and makeup to get a better handle on this question. And coaches will have to monitor his workouts to see if they can develop a plan to unlock his game at the next level.) Who are the top defensive prospects entering the 2026 NFL combine? Top 5 by position (Defensive tackle - 1. Peter Woods, Clemson: Peter Woods is the most quintessential 3-technique of the group. 2026 NFL Draft: PFSN’s Consensus Top 10 Interior Defensive Linemen Include Peter Woods, Kayden McDonald (1. Peter Woods, Clemson: With two of the three first-place votes on PFSN’s consensus rankings, Peter Woods is one of the least divisive defenders in the 2026 NFL Draft class. Ian Cummings was the lone draft analyst not to have him as DT1, and he still views Woods in very high regard as the class’ DT2. Clemson didn’t have a great season in 2025, but Woods still looked the part of a future first-round pick. He’s an explosive interior defensive lineman who’s best as a 3-technique but can also kick outside and rush as a 5-tech, if needed. He has a deep arsenal of pass-rushing moves he can string together to create backfield penetration. He also has above-average gap awareness against the run and does a good job of keeping his pads low at the line of scrimmage.) 2026 NFL draft: Every prospect with a first-round grade (The 2026 defensive tackle class has depth but no real first-round talents after a quiet season from Peter Woods (Clemson) and the failure of the rest of the class to produce pass-rushing talents worthy of a top pick. Though the class doesn't have a standout talent, there are impressive nose tackle and 1-technique prospects such as Lee Hunter (Texas Tech), Caleb Banks (Florida) and Kayden McDonald (Ohio State) who will push to be top-32 selections.) The 6-3, 310-pounder was still very impactful against the run inside, but he was just nowhere near as dominant as scouts hoped he’d be as an interior pocket pusher. Though Woods is still a first-round talent, he’s not the top-10 lock some thought he’d be at the start of the season. Woods’ absence should provide a big Pinstripe Bowl (Dec. 27, noon) opportunity for third-year sophomore DT Stephiylan Green, an explosive former top-150 prospect who had 10 pressures and two sacks in a backup role this season.) 2026 NFL Draft Defensive Line Rankings: Auburn’s Keldric Faulk & Clemson’s Peter Woods Lead the Pack (Peter Woods/DT/Clemson: Woods is another big-bodied athlete who failed to live up to expectations this season. He’s incredibly quick, shows the ability to beat blockers off the snap, and possesses terrific change-of-direction skills that allow him to make plays all over the field. This 20-year-old tackle lined up at fullback for Clemson this season during short-yardage or goal-line situations and posted two rushing touchdowns. The problem for scouts is the lack of production, as Woods combined for 56 tackles the past two seasons and has just five sacks during his college career. He, like Clemson, has been disappointing this year, but the athletic traits and NFL potential haven’t waned. Woods has excellent lateral quickness and movement in the run game and is stout enough to hold his gap against double teams. 2026 NFL Draft: Ranking the 10 Best Defensive Players in Next Year's Class (7. Peter Woods, defensive tackle, Clemson, 6-3, 310, junior: While Clemson’s disappointing season has effectively smudged the shine on several of their top prospects, the powerful Woods remains an easy first-round candidate in my eyes — and, more importantly, those of NFL scouts. He has never been a statistically dominant player, registering just 28 total tackles last year, although 8.5 of those were behind the line of scrimmage, including three sacks. Woods is on pace to boost his production in 2025 (21 tackles in seven games), though he isn’t responsible for many big plays with just 1.5 tackles for loss and a single sack on the year so far. He remains an immovable object in the middle, however — a trait that even in today’s up-tempo era holds extreme value in the NFL. Many football fans are familiar with the expression "stack and shed." Woods personifies that talent, rag-dolling would-be blockers at the point of attack, tossing them aside and forcing ballcarriers to either avoid him entirely or risk being hurled to the turf themselves. He’s also surprisingly quick, showing the lateral agility to chase down runners in limited spaces and even serving as an effective goal-line back for Clemson. I see a lot of similarities between Woods and last year’s No. 5 overall pick, Mason Graham. ) (10-23-25): https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2026-nfl-draft-ranking-10-best-defensive-players-next-years-class
2026 NFL Draft: Top 10 Senior Bowl prospects at midway point of college football season (9. Peter Woods, DT, Clemson (6-3, 310)*. Woods is an excellent athlete, but I did not see him consistently making plays during Clemson's early-season struggles. He can toss aside lesser blockers to stop interior run plays and pressure quarterbacks, though he was not credited with a sack this season until his dominant performance against Boston College last week. Woods possesses the foot quickness to wreak havoc on twists, jump a gap or work outside. He's been utilized as a short-yardage fullback and even scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 2-yard rush in the Tigers' win over BC.) The disappointing start for Clemson has coincided with many of its top prospects starting slow through four games. Woods is relatively the same guy we saw last fall which is fine given his standing in the eye of evaluators. While I was hoping for a leap to the Ndamukong Suh-level of every-down disruptor that hasn't materialized, no one in college football treats offensive linemen like a blocking sled more consistently than Woods. ESPN's Matt Miller believes Clemson star Peter Woods' draft stock could be taking a hit (ESPN’s Matt Miller and Mel Kiper Jr. offered updates on several Clemson players’ draft outlooks after the first month of the season, and the reviews are mixed. For defensive tackle Peter Woods, the start has not matched the preseason hype. Miller wrote that Clemson’s defense “was billed as an elite unit featuring first-round prospects along the defensive line and at cornerback. But much like Florida State’s much-heralded defense last year, not all of the prospects have lived up to expectations.” He added, “Defensive tackle Peter Woods, a player considered to be a top-five prospect before the season began, has failed to make a real impact and has yet to record his first sack this season. The 6-foot-3, 315-pounder’s tape from prior seasons showed a player who was rarely moved around by offensive linemen, but this year, his ability to get off blocks and finish plays is missing. There’s time to turn it around, but the junior defensive tackle’s stock might be slipping.”) (9-29-25): https://clemsonwire.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/clemson/football/2025/09/29/clemson-football-espn-matt-miller-peter-woods-draft-stock/86428453007/
2026 NFL Draft Summer Scouting: Interior Defender Overview (3-Techniques - Peter Woods, Clemson. Strengths: Rare flexibility and natural athleticism for his size. Has experience and success rushing from two- and three-point stances. Alignment versatility, from nose tackle to 5-technique. Could be more technical with finesse. Scouting Summary: Woods is an ideal blend of size, strength and athleticism for a big man. That shows up in his versatility — not only in his 0-to-5-technique alignments, but also his ability to make an impact in two- and three-point stances, making him truly scheme-versatile. His bread and butter is explosiveness in his first step, converting speed to power quickly and consistently. Pairing that with inside hand placement allows him to stack and shed blockers with haste to make plenty of plays at the line of scrimmage. If Woods continues to improve and diversify his pass-rush plan (even with shorter arms), he can convert his pass-rush win rate into more sacks and tackles for loss as opposed to just making stops at the line.) Unveiling the 2026 NFL Draft All-Prospect team (Defensive tackle First team - Peter Woods: Peter Woods is the most refined of the bunch. He has a high floor in run defense and shows an ability to get upfield as a pass rusher. Exciting draft prospects to watch in college football (DT Peter Woods, Clemson: There was brief consideration for linebacker Wade Woodaz because Woods is a chalky pick. Woodaz is an instinctual player that should capitalize on the mayhem created by the talented Clemson front, but he had a 17.3% missed tackle rate in 2024, per TruMedia. The Tigers broke transfer portal tendency and brought in Purdue edge rusher Will Heldt to start opposite T.J. Parker. Improved depth on the edges should allow Woods to move inside full-time and exploit one-on-one opportunities. Woods had a 9.7% pressure rate last season, according to TruMedia. Peter Woods | DT Clemson Tigers: Name a better duo than elite defensive tackles and the Clemson Tigers … I’ll wait. Peter Woods is the latest monster on the ACC front-runner’s defensive front, and he’s back to assert his dominance in the college football world in 2025. The 6’3”, 315-pound behemoth was a top-10 prospect coming out of high school, and he entered his junior season as a top-10 player in college football. Woods continued to elevate his game last fall, logging nine tackles for loss, three sacks, and one forced fumble. Combining an impressive first step with devastating play strength and a motor as hot as the surface of the sun, the Clemson defensive tackle is as adept at getting after the passer as he is at stopping the run. While he’s listed as a defensive tackle, he effortlessly played off the edge last season, which, at his size, is a wonder to behold.) Arch Manning and 2025’s other 24 most interesting college football people (Peter Woods, DT, Clemson: A defensive lineman to finish? That’s fitting, considering a dominant defensive line comes right after quarterback on the list of things college football teams need to win it all. Clemson looks great in both areas, and Woods isn’t just any defensive lineman. He came in No. 5 on that Freaks List, managing a 33-inch vertical with his 310-pound body. As difficult as it is to project quarterbacks in the draft entering a college season, players like Woods are easier to peg. Woods can be a freak of nature no matter where he lines up for the Tigers, and the addition of Purdue transfer Will Heldt allows him to move back to his more natural position inside. Woods has the power to manhandle the offensive linemen in front of him, has the quickness to shed blocks and get around the edge, and has an underrated quickness to chase down the ball carrier. With more weapons around him this year, he could be even more of a terror for the teams he faces.) Top 10 College Football Players for 2025 by Joel Klatt: Smith or Downs? Arch or Klubnik? (10. Peter Woods, DT, Clemson: I love the idea of Clemson running through the ACC and getting back to the mountaintop. I don’t know if it will win the national championship, but I’m really toying around with the idea that Clemson could play in the title game. I think Dabo Swinney could have the last laugh around this "the game passed him by narrative" that swirled in recent years. Part of that is because the Tigers are great on defense. Their interior defensive line is great. I’m a big believer in building your defense from front to back and inside out. That can be very old school, as some NFL people will tell you that you have to be great on the outside. That’s true, but to be fundamentally good at the college level, you’ve got to be good right down the middle. That’s why Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State have won the last three championships. Anyway, Woods is that. I think he’s the best defensive tackle in the country. He’s excellent, and he has also played on the edge, so you know he’s got that athleticism. He can be dominant up front, disrupting the timing of opposing offenses by stuffing the run and getting after the quarterback. You’re going to be hearing Woods’ name quite a bit, and I think you’ll be hearing it early in the 2026 NFL Draft.) Every year or so a player comes along who you know is destined for NFL greatness the first day you see them on a collegiate field. Myles Garrett, Derek Stingley Jr., and Penei Sewell all fit that bill in their day. Peter Woods belongs in that category. His freshman year in 2023 looked like a grown man already. He was already outplaying teammate and second-round pick Ruke Orhorhoro. Woods is such an impressive physical specimen at 315 pounds that Clemson had him playing off the edge. And not just for a few third-down gimmicks either, but for nearly 31% of his snaps last season! Woods should end up right in the realm of prospects like Jalen Carter and Quinnen Williams in that it's not a matter of "if" he'll be good in the league, but how high will his ceiling push? Though his big-bodied frame makes him an ideal interior defender in a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme, Woods’ success in tracking down runners and harassing quarterbacks from the edge will encourage some defensive coordinators to envision a Chris Jones-like role for the 6-foot-3, 315-pounder as a pro. College football's dynamic duos: Penn State, Texas tandems set to define 2025 national championship race (4. DE T.J. Parker & DT Peter Woods, Clemson: The Clemson defense took its lumps in 2024 but looks poised for a potentially dominant season with Tom Allen stepping into the coordinator role. He inherited an uncanny amount of returning production, and it all starts up front with perhaps the nation's top returning defensive lineman in Peter Woods and an unstoppable edge rusher in T.J. Parker. That pair was already monstrous in the trenches but could take its production to an even higher level under Allen's guidance. Parker was absurd as a sophomore with his ACC-best six forced fumbles, 20 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. He is an early first-round talent in the making who could very well average a sack per game in what will almost certainly be his last year with the Tigers. Woods, meanwhile, is a 315-pound force who is at his best when he mans the interior defensive line, and he should be the first defensive tackle taken in next year's draft if all goes according to plan.) Over his first two seasons of college football, he’s both the highest-graded and most valuable returning Power Four defensive tackle, according to PFF’s wins above average metric. Joel Klatt's 2026 NFL Draft Big Board: Who edges out Arch Manning for top spot? (5. Peter Woods, DT, Clemson: When I was preparing to make this top-10 list, there were a few other Clemson players that I didn't list, but were under heavy consideration. Quarterback Cade Klubnik was among that group, so Clemson should be really good next season. Woods had a strong 2024 season. He's a stout 6-3, 315 pounds in the middle of Clemson's defensive line, recording three sacks last season. The Tigers' defensive line should be a lot better this year than the last couple of years, partly because of Woods.) Peter Woods, T.J. Parker Headline Clemson Tigers To Make Top 100 Returning Players (10. DT Peter Woods: Woods is as dominant a force as they come. In 2023, several major media outlets, including College Sports Network, named him a freshman All-American. This season, the 6’3″, 315-pound defensive tackle dealt with injuries but still managed 18 solo tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble. A native of Alabaster, Ala., Woods is tremendous off the snap, with violent hands and tremendous feel along the line of scrimmage. His effort sticks out on tape—normally, defensive tackles are tired by the fourth quarter, but not Woods. He’s still making high-impact plays deep into the game.)
