2026 NFL draft: Mel Kiper's favorite prospects by position (Kyle Louis, Pittsburgh:  For the second year in a row, my colleague Louis Riddick and I have the same safety on our lists of our favorite prospects. Last year, we both had Andrew Mukuba, who was off to a good start in Year 1 with the Eagles before breaking his ankle. This year, it's Louis. The only difference is that Riddick has him at linebacker, whereas I like him more at safety. But it doesn't really matter. Louis will line up all over the place. It's what he does. A savvy defensive coordinator will have him as a box safety, an off-ball linebacker, at outside linebacker, in the slot and over the top. No matter where he aligns on any snap, Louis finds the football and gets himself into the middle of the action. With 4.53 speed, he gets from Point A to Point B fast. And at 6-foot and 220 pounds, with good length, he is a tackling machine once he arrives on scene. Over the past two seasons, Louis had 183 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 30 run stops, 10 sacks, six interceptions and two forced fumbles. One Perfect Target for Lions in Every Round of NFL Draft (Third round — LB Kyle Louis:  Louis is another versatile defender who fills a need. After Alex Anzalone departed, the Lions are in need of a WILL linebacker with athleticism, and Louis is exactly that. A converted safety, the Pittsburgh product has good coverage instincts and matches up nicely from a physical perspective. In his final two years at Pittsburgh, Louis had a combined 24 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and six interceptions. He's still relatively new to the position, and with the right coaching could blossom into a star with some development.) 2026 NFL draft: Louis Riddick's favorite prospects, sleepers (Kyle Louis, LB, Pittsburgh - Height: 6-0 | Weight: 220.  I've talked about Louis a ton this spring, and not just because he played at Pitt. Remember how impactful former Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks was against the run and the pass during his great NFL career? I'm not saying Louis is Brooks, but the Hall of Famer's style of play is exactly what I see when I watch Louis. He has the movement skills of a defensive back and the hands of a wide receiver. And I see the instincts, key-and-diagnose traits and overall toughness in the box against the run to be an elite-level playmaker in the pros the moment he steps onto the football field. Five NFL Teams That Can Draft Pitt Star Kyle Louis (1.Detroit Lions:  Louis could join the Lions as the immediate replacement for hybrid player Alex Anzalone, who joined the Buccaneers at the beginning of free agency. The Lions need a better run stopping defensive player who does not play on the line, and Louis can fill that void with his stellar ability to find the backfield. College coaches pick 2026 NFL draft sleepers (Kyle Louis, Pittsburgh Panthers - Key numbers: 81 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, three sacks, two fumble recoveries, one FF and two INTs last season. Louis had 201 career tackles, including 25.5 for loss and 10 sacks to go along with six interceptions, 12 passes defended, two forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered. Scouts Inc. ranking: No. 89 overall, No. 8 linebacker, Grade of 75.  What else to know: After two developmental seasons at Pitt, Louis broke out in 2024, earning second-team AP All-America honors as the ACC's top linebacker. The 7 biggest winners of the 2026 pre-draft process (LB Kyle Louis, Pittsburgh: Louis was hanging around toward the bottom of the top 200 back in January. Now he's got second round buzz after proving he has the athleticism to help overcome his lack of Sunday size.  The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker was uber-productive at Pitt, recording 182 tackles, 10 sacks, 24 tackles for loss and six interceptions over the last two seasons. But he also looked like a familiar college-not-pro star thanks to a small frame. While he may still struggle to fill an off-ball linebacker role, his 4.4-second 40 speed and fluid movement give him the chance to thrive in a STAR designation as a linebacker/safety hybrid near the line of scrimmage. That became clearer at the Senior Bowl, where he had an interception and multiple pass breakups in coverage throughout drills and proved to be a chaos agent. His combine performance cemented that, and now he can be a multi-dimensional goblin who may need a beefy running mate to blow up pulling guards but should still be a true headache in the NFL.) Three Pitt Players Who Improved Their NFL Draft Stock (Kyle Louis:  Kyle Louis, along with running back Desmond Reid, were certainly the main draws for much of the scouts in attendance on the South Side. Louis had already done a workout at the NFL Scouting Combine, which meant that scouts already knew his talent from his impressive vertical jump and 40-yard dash numbers. One of the big concerns about Louis' game is his height, as he would come in quite undersized for an NFL linebacker. On the other hand, his height fits the mold of a box safety, and his role projects as such at the NFL level. His interviews and press opportunities seems to be well received by the local media, and no issues have arisen from any other appearances he has made in the draft process. He will certainly be the top selection, if not the only selection out of Pitt in the coming draft, and projects to be somewhere in the second day of the draft.) 2026 NFL draft All-Film team: 11 prospects with upside (Linebacker: Kyle Louis, Pittsburgh - Scouts Inc. ranking: No. 111.  You have to trust the tape on Louis, who tipped the scales in Indianapolis at 220 pounds. Only 11 linebackers have been lighter at the NFL combine since 1999.  That is not linebacker weight in the NFL, as the only guys playing at that size are safety converts, like Ronnie Harrison Jr. and Jamien Sherwood. To that point, Louis was often used by Pitt as an overhang defender -- an alignment filled in the league by a variety of slot corners or box safeties. This allowed Louis to chase plays into the boundary unblocked or chase down runs from the backside unimpeded. It tested him in coverage, but Louis responded well to that ask, with the explosive change-of-direction skills of a true defensive back.Watch him here against a misdirection shot play from Stanford. He stays home against the run action and the reverse, finds the late-releasing tight end, closes the distance to take away a quick target to the flat, then flips and runs downfield, knocking the receiver off his line and easily winning the catch point.  Louis looks and plays and moves and acts like a supersize box safety. I think he can be a Joshua Metellus-like player -- a "safety" who spends most of his time lined up on the edge, taking on tight ends in both the running and passing game. But that's only if he lands in a Brian Flores-esque defense, which has that critical third safety role for him. In a Jim Schwartz-style system, he'd have to become Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, the speedy pursuit 'backer whose game is built on penetration. Louis is a true tweener, and his landing spot will determine what position he plays in the NFL. He has the speed, open-field tackling and disposition to stick on special teams for a long time, which will help him grow into whatever unique NFL job awaits him. I'm willing to bet on the honed instincts and truly elite change-of-direction skills in the middle rounds, and figure out the rest once I get him in the building.) Draft wild cards: 10 prospects in this class who could shake things up (S Kyle Louis:  Scouts love Louis’ game but worry about his best position at the next level. Although he thrived as a linebacker during his time at Pittsburgh, the undersized playmaker (5-11 7/8, 220 pounds) might be better served making a position switch due to durability concerns as a tackle-to-tackle defender. While his production and impact could make him a dynamic defender as a hybrid safety in a defense that extensively features sub-personnel, the challenge of defending slot receivers and tight ends in space could be a hang-up for evaluators. What I learned at the NFL combine: Detroit Lions buzz and draft targets (13. Those of you who read my work know I’ve planted my flag on Pitt LB Kyle Louis. He can be a real asset at the next level for a defensive coordinator who knows how to use him. I tend to think his best position in the NFL is as a “big nickel” — a hybrid LB/S athletic enough to cover TEs, RBs and slot receivers. Teams are going to get themselves in trouble chasing the next Nick Emmanwori, but Emmanwori was more athlete than football player before Mike Macdonald coached him up. Lions draft: An off-ball LB for every round of the 2026 NFL Draft (Fourth round: Kyle Louis, Pittsburgh - Louis is the epitome of a hybrid safety/LB. He’s a 6-foot-2, 220-pound coverage backer who blossomed when Pittsburgh started using him more in the overhang/heavy slot role on defense. That’s similar to the Brian Branch role in Detroit. The speedy Louis tested better athletically than Branch, but he’s not as physical or decisive in his movements. In the last two games of his that I watched (Notre Dame and Louisville), Louis missed 6 tackles and ran past a few others. He stays blocked a little too readily as well to play in more than a nickel LB role as he continues to convert from safety to off-ball backer. Those are very real detriments to what might otherwise be the most coverage-adept LB in the entire class. It’s easy to see the Lions subbing him in for Derrick Barnes in obvious passing downs, or using him to cover flexed TEs or motioned-out RBs in more obvious passing situations. Louis does avoid blocks decently in space, and his quick-strike burst is a nice answer to screens and swing passes that have been problematic for the Lions on 3rd-and-longs in the last couple of seasons.) 2026 NFL Combine Winners For Detroit Lions to Monitor (LB Kyle Louis, Pitt - PFF Big Board Rank: 95.  Louis continues to impress during the pre-draft process after dominating the Senior Bowl. He placed in the top five for broad and vertical jump, and his tape has teams taking a second look at the Pitt player at another position, that being a hybrid nickel option.  He has the athleticism, range, and pass coverage ability, based on his tape and his Senior Bowl practices. He's a hybrid player who makes plays all over the field, and he could line up as a box safety, off-ball linebacker or even outside linebacker at the next level. He's fast to the football, and his 4.53 in the 40-yard dash proved his solid speed. But his jumps really stood out. His 39½-inch vertical ranked fourth among linebackers and would have tied for third among safeties. And his 10-foot-9 broad jump was second among linebackers and would have been fourth among the safeties.Regardless of where an NFL team ultimately plays him, Louis is a baller who will make an impact in coverage, in run defense and as a blitzer. Over the past two seasons, he had 183 tackles, 10 sacks and six INTs. I'd watch for him to come off the board in the second or third round.) Which Senior Bowl standouts could the Detroit Lions target? (Kyle Louis, LB, Pittsburgh:  Starting with the coverage skills that Kyle Louis possesses, it’s impressive how he handled himself against RBs and TEs all week. Louis displayed good change of direction ability and was able to not just stay in the hip pocket of pass catchers but he also undercut routes perfectly.  There are some concerns with how he handles or disengages from blocks when aligned in the box but his burst, range and coverage ability is encouraging. Louis checked into the Senior Bowl at 5-11 and 224 pounds with 32-inch arms. While some will consider that undersized, it’s oddly comparable to Bills LB Matt Milano, who is listed at 6-0 and 223 pounds with 32-inch arms.  With the Lions potentially on the verge of losing linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Alex Anzalone, the need for a linebacker could be much higher for Detroit than originally discussed. By adding Kyle Louis, they get a player that displays plenty of range and is so instinctive when dropping into coverage. Louis would alleviate pressure from Jack Campbell for coverage responsibilities and it could help take away middle parts of the field for whichever safeties are aligned in the secondary. Parker Take Field in Mobile (Kyle Louis, LB, National - Day 1 Update:  Kyle Louis is a shade under 6’0″ and just 224 pounds, but don’t let his size detract from the fact that he’s just a high-quality football player. Particularly in coverage, Louis was one of the best LBs on Day 1.  His best rep came in 1-on-1s against Nick Singleton. Even before Singleton fully broke down on his route transition, Louis recognized the impending dig, swiveled his hips from outside to inside leverage, and exploded into the break, deflecting the pass before it ever had a chance.  Louis’ hip fluidity and closing speed are eye-catching for a second-level defender, and his quick recognition helps him maximize those traits. Day 2 Update:  Kyle Louis has been the best, most consistent, and most dynamic linebacker in Mobile through two days, and it hasn’t been overly close. That’s not a knock on other LBs either, as there are several on this risers list. Louis has just been that good.  On Day 1, Louis had one of the best 1-on-1 plays for an LB, snaring an INT on a Texas route. On Day 2, he again had an incredible play in coverage, this time running with high-speed back Adam Randall on a vertical catch technique rep and notching a deflection with his back to the ball. Later, he knifed through exterior gaps for a tackle for loss in teams.  At 5’11 3/4″ and 224 pounds, Louis is indeed undersized, so there will come questions of where he ultimately plays at the second level. But at this point, his level of combined closing speed, fluidity, processing quickness, and playmaking ability defies any size-instigated limitations. Parker and others during Senior Bowl week (Kyle Louis brings Swiss Army knife versatility -- and violence - The Pitt linebacker-safety hybrid embraces the label teams keep giving him: a versatile, high-energy defender who can do a little bit of everything. "That's exactly what my game is," Louis said. "I feel most comfortable in the slot because that's where most of my snaps were. I feel like I'm great when it comes to space." Louis' playing style is probably better characterized as controlled aggression, both in space and coming downhill where he's consistently explosive but rarely reckless. "If I see a screen, my mindset is simple," he said. "Blow the screen up." And that mentality is all over the tape: receivers wanting no part of what he's bringing to the party, would-be blockers struggling to keep him in their sights -- never mind actually, you know, blocking him. And quarterbacks having to know exactly where Louis is on the field at all times. Still, Louis knows splash plays aren't enough at the next level. "I really love to catch a pick," he said. He looks pretty comfortable dropping back and covering TEs and RBs, and he has even had to cover WRs. On top of his coverage, he is also a lethal blitzer. Louis has the makings of being the best LB at the Senior Bowl, as he has the talent to dominate one-on-one coverage reps and team drills. He is undersized for an LB, at 6-1, 220 pounds. Two Pitt Players Named to PFF ACC Team of the Week (Kyle Louis:  Louis matched his season-high of 11 tackles and also tallied a sack on five pressures. Interestingly, PFF chose Louis over Braylan Lovelace, who had a 100-yard pick-six and a slightly better overall grade than Louis did.  But where Louis likely earned the honor was with his superior tackling and pass rushing grades of 86.2 and 90.5, respectively.  Nonetheless, Louis is having another strong season. 2026 NFL Draft – Stock Report (Down - Kyle Louis, LB, Pitt:  Louis was a tremendous playmaker for the Panthers in 2024, and while he has not been as prolific, Louis has provided some big plays in 2025 as well. Louis is a fast and instinctive linebacker who is very good in pass coverage. However, Louis is undersized, and that leads to concerns about him holding up as a run defender in the NFL. With a physical offensive line and an elite back in Jeremiyah Love, this tape was a good gauge for Louis regarding the pro level.  Overall, this was a disappointing game as Louis had some lowlights and was very quiet. Throughout the game, Louis was having issues getting off blocks and was being kept away from the ball. In the first half, Louis had a bad missed tackle on Jadarian Price. Early in the third quarter, on a fourth-and-2, Louis fired into the backfield and had a bead on Love for a tackle for a loss and big turnover on downs for his team, but Louis missed the tackle, and Love was able to explode to the perimeter to get 22 yards. This tape made Louis look more like a mid-rounder rather than an early-round prospect.
