2026 NFL Draft: 5 prospects who could sneak into the first round (CB Chris Johnson, San Diego State - PFF Big Board Rank: 46.  The top cornerbacks in the 2026 NFL Draft are alluring, with LSU’s Mansoor Delane and Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy both projected to be taken by the 20th pick. Even with injuries affecting his stock, Clemson’s Avieon Terrell is another high-quality option. But Johnson shouldn’t be slept on, either.  It’s true that Johnson didn’t face incredibly tough competition during his tenure at San Diego State, but he dominated the way one would expect of an exceptional player against inferior opponents. In 2025, Johnson produced a 92.4 PFF coverage grade with a measly 16.1 passer rating when targeted, allowing only 41.9% of his targets to be caught. On top of that, he missed just 5.4% of his career tackle attempts.  Turning on the tape also reveals abilities that should translate quickly to the next level. He possesses fluid hips and quick feet, enabling him to explode out of breaks. Paired with his physicality, patience and instincts, Johnson could be a good starter on the perimeter off the bat.Johnson’s more average size and strength (6 feet, 193 pounds), paired with being in the Mountain West, may leave him on the board until the second round. An easy mover who can mirror wide receivers without getting too handsy. Johnson has the athleticism and balance to play in man coverage, but he also has the awareness and eyes to be a valid zone corner with real ball skills to take advantage of his positioning. He’s a competitive player who is willing to take on blockers and is more than willing to stick his nose in to make the tackle. 2026 NFL draft All-Film team: 11 prospects with upside (Cornerback: Chris Johnson, San Diego State - Scouts Inc. ranking: No. 47.  The top of the 2026 cornerback class is well established: Mansoor Delane, Jermod McCoy, Colton Hood, Avieon Terrell. But there's a little intrusive voice in the back of my head that tells me Johnson should be squarely in that group of names.  He is a classic small-school study. An easy mover with delightful patience and technique, Johnson (6-0, 193 pounds) outclasses many of his opponents and plays without fear accordingly. He never bites on route fakes or overexerted releases. He never panics when the ball is in the air and doesn't draw flags when he's forced out of phase. With four INTs and nine pass breakups last season, he looks like a 10-year NFL vet who sneaked an Aztecs jersey on just to get some reps in before his game on Sunday. I have zero doubt that Johnson would be a first-round pick if he did this in a jersey with a Big Ten or SEC patch on it. But he didn't. Johnson's lone Power 4 opponent last season was Cal (and not for nothing, he was lights out in that game, housing a 97-yard pick-six). His toughest matchup over the past two seasons was Washington State WR Kyle Williams, who would go in the third round of the 2025 draft to the Patriots. Williams caught a few passes on him, including a downfield back-shoulder ball that details Johnson's biggest issue: He isn't particularly long or physical, so he will lose contested situations. But he was step for step with Williams for much of the game. Drafting Johnson early will take some belief in his ability to ratchet up his play speed and intensity at the NFL level -- he cannot be as patient in the league as he was at a lower level. But I'd lie if I said he didn't remind me, at times, of watching Quinyon Mitchell at Toledo. The payoff was enormous for the Eagles, and Johnson will likely come at a round's discount. 2026 NFL Pro Day Notes: Seahawks Eye Chris Johnson, Bears Show Interest in Sam Hecht (The marquee name at SDSU pro day was cornerback Chris Johnson, expected to be a top 45 selection. Johnson stood on all his combine marks but did run the short shuttle and was timed as fast as 3.90 seconds on a few watches. He also looked terrific in position drills. Overall, it was a positive day for the cornerback. Johnson had dinner with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday evening, then met with the Minnesota Vikings at pro day. It made me happy that Johnson’s podium was relatively mobbed by media; looks like his talent has caught on in the mainstream. Last season for the Aztecs, Johnson allowed 18 catches on 43 targets for 185 yards, 79 yards after the catch, no touchdowns, four interceptions, five pass breakups, and a preposterous opponent passer rating of 16.1. Moreover, his work against Washington State and Cal proved that he wasn’t just beating up on smaller opponents.  I wasn’t able to ask Johnson for his favorite play in the media scrum, but Omari Brown of uSTADIUM.com did something similar, and I loved Johnson’s answer. “Yeah, when we were playing Cal, it was kind of a small sample size, just played we played them in week three,” Johnson said of his pass deflection against the Colden Bears. “So, we pretty much watched the first two games they played. And in both games, they got in an empty set where they put the number one receiver at number two [in the slot], and the running back out wide. “And in practice, we practice it all week — we didn’t cover three [the inside slot receiver], so I was outside. They were running a Stick concept with the back running the low curl, and the No. 2 receiver going slot fade. But we manned it up. So I took the receiver in the slot and obviously I knew he was doing a fade, so that’s just preparation coming to reality." Well-put, Mr. Johnson. Trond Grizzell was the receiver running the slot fade under Johnson’s auspices, while running back Brandon High Jr. was out wide. Johnson tracked Grizzell through his slot fade route like he does on most plays — seamlessly — and provided some aggro after the catch to break it up. Johnson’s combination of physical skills and obvious football intelligence should have some lucky NFL team thanking its lucky stars for his presence over the next few years.) 2026 Senior Bowl Practice Observations: Caleb Banks, T.J. Parker Take Field in Mobile (Chris Johnson, CB, National - Day 1 Update:  For a CB who was heavily anticipated as a potential Round 1 riser, Day 1 of the Senior Bowl was a letdown for Chris Johnson. His early loss to Caleb Douglas in team drills wasn’t all his fault, as Bud Clark also gave up positioning, but he was late to respond to the in-breaker, and Reggie Virgil left him reeling on an intermediate curl later in practice. Johnson remains an exciting talent, but even at his higher-than-expected weight, he was directed out of proper leverage more often than desired in press-man. Day 2 will give him an opportunity to bounce back. Day 2 and 3 Update:  Johnson improved a bit down the stretch at the Senior Bowl, but his week was underwhelming, considering the expectations for him coming in. More often than expected, Johnson was beat at the catch point while applying sticky coverage, and there were times in press-man where he gave up too much ground off releases and after breaks. If anything, Johnson’s Senior Bowl communicated two things: His ball skills might be less consistent against high-end competition, and his skill set is likely better for off-man and zone schemes than press-man.
