Lions Round 5 Pick 157 CB Keith Abney Grades and Analysis

Grades:

AtoZSports (Round 4, pick 157: Keith Abney II, CB, Arizona State - The steal of the draft for the Lions. Abney was supposed to be a second-round pick. We had him at 61 on our big board. Dane Brugler had him at 61 on his big board as well. Nobody expected him to fall this far. Abney can come in and start for the Lions in 2026 in that slot corner spot, and he can be a high-level player for them.  Grade: A):  https://atozsports.com/nfl/detroit-lions-news/final-grades-for-the-detroit-lions-2026-nfl-draft-haul-a-return-to-form-for-brad-holmes-after-a-rough-2025-draft/

Lions OnSI Booher (Round 5, pick 157: Keith Abney II, CB, Arizona State - Grade: A.  The Lions have some questions at the cornerback position, and added depth in Abney. He is an ideal schematic fit with his abilities in man coverage, as he allowed a completion percentage of 44.4 percent in his final season with the Sun Devils. Amik Robertson, a fiesty but undersized corner, departed this offseason in free agency. Abney's tape is reminiscent of Robertson, and he could be the ideal replacement with some development. He can be too handsy at times, but is unafraid of matching up in press or matching in off coverage. Abney entered Draft night with a Day 2 grade, and fell to the Lions in the fifth-round. If he can overcome some penalty issues and develops, he could be a massive steal for Detroit.); https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/onsi/detroit-lions-2026-nfl-draft-grades

Walter Football (Detroit Lions: Keith Abney, CB, Arizona State – A Grade. Keith Abney is a small cornerback but projects to play very well in the slot. The Lions have had issues with their cornerbacks recently, and they’re taking a quality prospect with value at this choice.):  https://walterfootball.com/nfldraftgrades5.php

CBS (157. Lions: Keith Abney II, CB, Arizona State - Grade: A-.  Abney is a Dan Campbell-type addition. He is on the smaller side but plays bigger. The Lions received good value with this pick.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2026-nfl-draft-grades-tracker-live-round-5-analysis/

USA Today (157. Detroit Lions: CB Keith Abney, Arizona State – Grade: A-. Abney was a great contested catch cornerback at Arizona and generated 21 pass defenses and five interceptions over his last two college seasons. His smaller size (5-10, 187 pounds) may make him a nickel back at the professional level, but the Lions can let him compete for playing time early in his NFL career.):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2026/04/27/2026-nfl-draft-grades-every-pick-analysis/89809313007/

Analysis:

ESPN (Round 5, No. 157: Keith Abney II, CB, Arizona State - My take: The Lions address another need with this pick while also securing depth. This time, they added another talented player to the secondary in Abney, who was a two-year starter at Arizona State. His 20 pass breakups since the start of 2024 were also the most in Big 12 and tied for the fourth-most among Power Conference players in that time. He fits the culture of Detroit's defense with his physical style and inside/outside versatility. He was a 2025 first-team All-Big 12 selection who allowed zero touchdowns on 72 targets faced last season.):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2026/story/_/id/48431898/analysis-every-selectio

Pride of Detroit (Round 5, pick 157: Keith Abney, CB/NB, Arizona State - Widely considered a Top 100 pick by national draft analysts, the Lions grab Abney in the fifth round, adding depth to their secondary. With inside-out range, Abney has the skills to back up on the outside while also challenging to start in the slot. Highly competitive—he ranked in the top 30 on the Grit Index with a 9.07 score—Abney is a bit of a work in progress, but he has starter upside.):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/detroit-lions-draft/162199/detroit-lions-2026-nfl-draft-pick-tracker-results-full-coverage

NFL.com (157. Keith Abney II:  I'll need to call around after the draft to find out why Abney fell because I thought he deserved to be a top-100 pick. A quality athlete in a limited frame, Abney might be pushed inside because of size concerns, but he's an urgent athlete with two years of solid ball production to his name.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2026-nfl-draft-pick-by-pick-analysis-for-rounds-4-5
