Mock Draft Round-Up #7

Mel Kiper's Mock Draft (16. DT Jarran Reed: The Lions need to add talent to the interior of the defensive line even if Haloti Ngata returns for another year (or more). Reed isn't going to get sacks, but he immediately upgrades the run defense and is the kind of player who makes everyone around him better because he's so hard to move and can occupy blockers.) (2-18-16):  http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2016/02/18/mel-kiper-2016-mock-draft/80551688/

NFL's Chad Reuter's Mock Draft ( 16. OT Taylor Decker: Taylor Decker Joins Fellow Former Big Ten Star Lineman Riley Reiff On The Lions' O-line, With The Hopes That It Helps In Pass Protection (44 Sacks Allowed In 2015) And The Consistency Of The Bottom-ranked Rush Offense In The League. 46. DT Robert Nkemdiche, 108. DE Ronald Blair.) (2-18-16):   http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000629975/article/fourround-mock-draft-cowboys-grab-qb-wentz-at-no-4

NFL's Zierlein's Mock Draft (16. OT Jack Conklin: Conklin is a Michigan State grinder who can have an immediate impact with the running game and might be able to play on the left or right. While he's not as athletic as Detroit might like, he brings a toughness to the table that will appeal to the Lions.) (2-18-16):   http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/mock-drafts/lance-zierlein/275603

Draft Tek Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions - OT Taylor Decker: Finally, someone else gets it! This outstanding analysis by Pride of Detroit's Alex Reno is in lockstep with my theory (proposed in past simulations) that drafting a LT here is a poor Plan-B alternative to backing a Brinks truck into Buffalo behemoth LT Cordy Glenn's driveway in Free Agency. Glenn's projected $55M, five-year contract is breathtaking, but it simply has to be done. The presentation of the PFF data supports the fact that rookie LTs tend to struggle to adapt to the speed and power of the NFL. I can only hope that Lions' GM Bob Quinn takes a proactive approach to addressing Detroit's greatest need: Bolstering the O-Line. We must be cognizant that signing a top-flight OT in Free Agency by no means mitigates the need to draft an O-Lineman this year. Since a developmental period is an unfortunate fact of life for them, an investment in the future becomes a necessary evil. This pick would be better spent on an elite defender who would offer immediate impact. 46. Detroit Lions - SS Jeremy Cash: Cash has slipped 10 spots in our most-recent Big Board rankings, but DraftTek's top-rated SS remains a nice +7 value at this spot. The ACC's Defensive Player of the Year, and consensus two-time All-American will come under the scrutiny of NFL medical staffs at the Scouting Combine after having wrist surgery last December. What makes Cash so intriguing is his size and skill set. At 6'1", 212 pounds, Cash is a hybrid SS/OLB who loves to press receivers. At the next level, Cash will likely be required to add some muscle to that frame in order to be an accomplished in-the-box defender. As far as coverage skills are concerned, scouts are unanimous in their praise of Cash's ability to play all secondary positions at a high level. I have no doubt that Lions' Defensive Coordinator, Teryl Austin, has the versatile Cash on his wish-list; especially with the expected loss of SS James Ihedigbo, and possible loss of SS Isa Abdul-Quddus in Free Agency. 108. DE Bronson Kaufusi, 139. CB DJ White, 157. OLB Antonio Morrison, 173. WR Roger Lewis, 184. WR Jalin Marshall and 204. LB James Burgess) (2-19-16):   http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round1.asp

Walter football Walt's Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions: Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor: Andrew Billings could easily be selected in the top 10, so this is a steal. The Lions obviously need a big boost at defensive tackle after failing to properly replace Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley last offseason. 46. Kenny Lawler, WR, California: Calvin Johnson has announced his retirement, so unless the Lions can lure him back with a mega contract, they'll have to find a new starting receiver to play across from Golden Tate. 108. Detroit Lions: Aziz Shittu, DE, Stanford: Here's another defensive lineman for the Lions, as they'll need someone to replace Jason Jones if he leaves via free agency. ) (2-17-16):   http://walterfootball.com/draft2016.php

NFL's Daniel Jeremiah (16. OT Ronnie Stanley: The Lions have some good young pieces on the offensive line and Stanley would be a nice upgrade at left tackle.) (2-16-16):   http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/mock-drafts/daniel-jeremiah/275602

CBS' Rob Rang's Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions: Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson: The Lions have a growing star in Ziggy Ansah but have not yet sufficiently replaced former free agent losses Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley and Cliff Avril over the past few seasons. Lawson isn't the blue chip prospect that his NCAA-leading 25.5 tackles for loss would indicate, but he is powerful, agile and tenacious and, like Ansah, is still just scratching the surface of his potential.) (2-15-16):  http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock-draft/expert/rob-rang

CBS' Dane Brugler's Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions: Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State: With a new front office, the Lions will be a wild card in the first round, especially if Detroit makes a splash with one of the high-priced contracts (Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, etc.) on the current roster. Decker is a plug-and-play option on the offensive line, which would address the Lions' issues at right tackle.) (2-15-16):   http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock-draft/expert/dane-brugler

Walter football's Charlie's Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions: Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama: Detroit Let Ndamukong Suh And Nick Fairley Leave Last Offseason, While Haloti Ngata Showed Signs Of Decline In 2015. Here, The Lions Grab A Physical Defensive Tackle To Cause Disruption Next To Ziggy Ansah. The 6-foot-3, 311-pound Reed Was A Powerful Defender For Alabama At The Point Attack. He Is A Strong Run Defender Who Fills His Gap And Is Tough To Move. Reed Isn't Much Of A Pass-rusher Though, But He Has Quickness And Athleticism To Improve At Getting After The Quarterback In The Nfl. In 2015, The Senior Totaled 53 Tackles With 4.5 For A Loss, One Sack And Two Passes Batted. As A Junior In 2014, He Had 55 Tackles With 6.5 For A Loss, One Sack And Five Passes Batted. Reed Was A Juco Player Before Landing At Alabama. 46. DE Carl Nassib: The Lions grab a pass-rusher to pair with Ziggy Ansah. Nassib put together a torrid 2015 season with a bunch of multi-sack games and a huge presence in the opponents' backfields. He led the nation with 15.5 sacks in 2015 while also racking 46 tackles, 19.5 tackles for a loss and six forced fumbles. The 6-foot-6, 273-pounder also has drawn raves for his work ethic and practice habits from head coach James Franklin and former head coach Bill O'Brien. Nassib could fit at end in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. He really put his draft stock on the map with a massive senior season. Nassib is a 1-year wonder as he had only two sacks combined over 2014 and 2013. 108. WR Rashard Higgins : The Lions will want to address receiver at some point with Calvin Johnson retiring. Higgins (6-2, 188) had 75 catches 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns in 2015. He is a smooth, quick receiver who combines good route-running with reliable hands. If Higgins were thicker, he would be second-day pick. As a sophomore, he had a huge year with Garrett Grayson at quarterback under head coach Jim McElwain. Higgins totaled 96 passes for 1,750 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2014.) (2-15-16):   http://walterfootball.com/draft2016charlie.php

Rotoworld's Josh Norris' Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions - Baylor WR Corey Coleman - I think Coleman plays bigger than his size and obviously offers speed and yards after catch capabilities. It is interesting, because the WVU game shows an evaluator everything in terms of getting off the line versus press, while the Oklahoma State contest displays the opposite. Coleman obviously does not have Calvin Johnson’s size, but he is a playmaker.) (2-11-16):   http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/60326/344/nfl-mock-draft-version-30

SI Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions - A'shawn Robinson DT, Alabama: The knock on Robinson is that he is limited as an interior pass rusher. Well, the Lions have multiple DTs who can help there (Caraun Reid, Gabe Wright, Tyrunn Walker if he re-signs), but they’re shy on early-down bulk. Haloti Ngata walks, and Robinson replaces him as a starter. 46. Kentrell Brothers: Notes on the above picks: This is an extremely solid quintet, consisting of five players who should compete for starting jobs in camp. Neither Whitehair nor Kelly will move the hype needle all that much, but they both could wind up with lengthy careers. Coming back with Thomas at 45 gets the Rams a game-breaking threat, even if he falls shy of the top receiver tier. Ditto on the defensive side for Oakland (Perry) and Detroit (Brothers), which land impact prospects. Perry on the strong side could help round out the Raiders’ front seven, while Brothers can be a Stephen Tulloch replacement—now or in 2017.)(2-10-16):   http://www.si.com/nfl/2016/01/06/2016-nfl-mock-draft-laremy-tunsil-jared-goff

Football's Future Mock Draft (16. Detroit - Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama: Ragland is the type of player every team wants in the middle. He's instinctive, tough, and a natural leader. He's the type of player that can come and transform the identity of the defense with his toughness.) (2-10-16):  http://www.footballsfuture.com/2016/nflmockdraft.html

USA Today Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions – Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama: Let's hope they can talk Calvin Johnson out of retirement, as it will be particularly difficult to find anyone remotely capable of filling his ample shoes in this draft. But even if there were an elite receiver on the board, the Lions might be better off focusing on the D-line, which could suffer a free agent exodus. Reed is a load inside and could divert attention away from star pass rusher Ziggy Ansah.) (2-8-16):  http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2016/02/08/mock-draft-first-round-titans-browns/79973774/

ESPN's McShay's Mock Draft (16. LB Reggie Ragland) (2-3-16):   http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2016/02/detroit_lions_take_alabama_lb.html

PFF Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame: Offensive line help is on the way in Stanley, who graded at 9.6 as a pass rusher and 9.3 in the run game. He can struggle with power in the run game at times, but he moves well and surrendered only 13 pressures on 458 attempts this season. He can step right into Detroit’s revolving door at right tackle while potentially pushing LT Riley Reiff out the door in the coming years.) (2-2-16):  https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/02/02/draft-mock-draft-3-0-carson-wentz-surges-to-jets-with-20th-pick/

USA Today Mock Draft (16. Detroit Lions: Wr Laquon Treadwell, Mississippi Rebels: Scouting Report - Overview: The Detroit offensive and defensive lines need plenty of help, but the recent news that Calvin Johnson is retiring at age 30 leaves the Lions with a massive void at wide receiver. Enter Treadwell, whose free-fall finally stops with the Lions. I think Treadwell is a great player, but with so many talented receivers in the league today, many of the top 15 teams simply have more pressing needs. The Lions could potentially stand pat at no. 16 and get a top 5-8 player in the 2016 class if Treadwell’s combine performance isn’t other-worldly.) (2-1-16):   http://thedraftwire.usatoday.com/2016/02/01/2016-nfl-mock-draft-3-0-sheldon-rankins-noah-spence-on-the-rise/

NFLRealGM's Mock Draft (16. Lions: Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor: I toyed with a lot of different defensive linemen here. In the end Billings won out over Sheldon Rankins, Vernon Butler and Shaq Lawson because what he does well fits exactly what the Lions need along the D-Line: he’s an attacking nose tackle who plays the run very well on his way to the pass rush. Note--if you see any national pundit giving the Lions a cornerback in this slot, you have my permission to assault them with blunt objects; that is about as likely with this CB class as Martin O’Malley winning the Democratic nomination.) (2-1-16):   http://football.realgm.com/analysis/2764/2016-NFL-Mock-Draft-Version-30-Post-Senior-Bowl

Foxsport's Schrager's Mock Draft (16. Detroit (7-9): Emmanuel Ogbah, De, Oklahoma State, Jr.: The Lions have a Pro Bowl defensive end in Ziggy Ansah. The other three starters on their D-Line are free agents. Ogbah scored 11 sacks as a sophomore because of his freakish athleticism. He had 13 in 2015 even though he was a focus of opposing offenses' blocking schemes. New GM Bob Quinn is a scout's scout. I think Ogbah -- relatively clean from top to bottom -- is a solid pick.) (1-26-16):   http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/mock-draft-pre-senior-bowl-jared-goff-paxton-lynch-myles-jack-012616

Draftcountdown Mock Draft (16. DT A'Shawn Robinson: The loss of Ndamukong Suh in free agency last offseason was a serious blow.  Trading for Haloti Ngata was merely a stop-gap solution so it’s time for Detroit to bring in a long-term fix for the middle of the defensive line.  Alabama DT A’Shawn Robinson maylook like a grizzled ten-year veteran but in reality he is still just 20-years-old.  Robinson anchored the best defensive line in the country, using his size, strength and aggressiveness to control the line of scrimmage for the Crimson Tide en route to a national championship.  Robinson isn’t a particularly explosive athlete and probably won’t ever be a dynamic pass rusher but few are better when it comes to stuffing the run.  Another bonus with Robinson is that he is scheme-diverse and has the ability to play either defensive tackle in a 4-3 or the five-technique in a 3-4.  This may not be a sexy choice for the Lions but Robinson is going to be a solid player in the league for a long time, addresses a need and offers good value at this point.  Can’t ask for much more than that.) (1-26-16):   http://www.draftcountdown.com/mock-draft/2016-mock-draft/round-1/page/2/

NFL's Brook's Mock Draft (16. DT Jarran Reed: The Lions could elect to add an energetic interior defender to eventually replace Haloti Ngata as the team's designated destructive force in the middle. Reed not only brings energy, but he is a rugged playmaker capable of wreaking havoc at the point of attack.) (1-17-16):   http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/mock-drafts/bucky-brooks/275601
