Underrated rookies who could surprise at camps (DT Gabe Wright: With Ndamuking Suh and Nick Fairley (not to mention backup C.J. Mosley) out the door in free agency, the Lions have a major need at the defensive tackle position, even with the acquisition of Haloti Ngata. Wright fell to the fourth round because he's a bit of a tweener—at 6'1" and 300 pounds, he's not an earthmover who will consistently take double-teams, but he's not always a consistent penetrator, either—and at his size, that's what he needs to be. Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, however, has a great deal of faith in Wright's ability to grow in Detroit's aggressive scheme. "We really like Gabe," the coach said in May. "He is a really hard competitor. He played a lot of football from the SEC. He falls in the mold in what we like our defensive tackles to do and that is to penetrate, attack, get off blocks and make plays. He did a really good job of those things. He is a good player, a good kid and we are really glad to have him.” Wright has the physical characteristics to live up to all that; the questions are about his play-to-play effort. Underrated rookies who could surprise at camps (DT Gabe Wright: With Ndamuking Suh and Nick Fairley (not to mention backup C.J. Mosley) out the door in free agency, the Lions have a major need at the defensive tackle position, even with the acquisition of Haloti Ngata. Wright fell to the fourth round because he's a bit of a tweener—at 6'1" and 300 pounds, he's not an earthmover who will consistently take double-teams, but he's not always a consistent penetrator, either—and at his size, that's what he needs to be. Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, however, has a great deal of faith in Wright's ability to grow in Detroit's aggressive scheme. "We really like Gabe," the coach said in May. "He is a really hard competitor. He played a lot of football from the SEC. He falls in the mold in what we like our defensive tackles to do and that is to penetrate, attack, get off blocks and make plays. He did a really good job of those things. But Abdullah could be a home-run hitter who really takes a healthy Lions offense and elevates it to a Green Bay Packerslevel. Reggie Bush had that ability, but faltered with health and consistency within the scheme. Abdullah, on the other hand, is the perfectly explosive (and young) element to pair with Joique Bell. I'm not sure I buy that Abdullah is only a third-down specialist, either. The NFL 100 Rankings: Part 2 — Who Is Football’s No. 1 Player? (21. Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions (6): Even I’ll admit that it seems downright blasphemous to list Megatron this low. Most of my concern here boils down to injuries; Johnson is an enormously physical player, and Matthew Stafford has never had any qualms about putting his receivers in danger with throws into tight windows. He’s missed five games over the past two seasons, and I’d be worried that Johnson’s going to continue to miss games. He also took a step down on a per-game performance level last year, with the arrival of Golden Tate siphoning some receptions away; he fell below 100 yards per game for the first time since 2010, dropping down all the way to 82.8 receiving yards per contest. Megatron’s still an incredible receiver, but I wonder if we’ve seen his peak in those age-26 through age-28 seasons. Boom or bust? Re-assessing big WR contracts (1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions - The deal: Signed an eight-year, $130 million contract in March 2012, with $53 million guaranteed. Stats since signing: 43 games in three seasons, 277 catches, 4,533 receiving yards, 25 receiving touchdowns. Johnson is getting paid a boatload of money, but even so, I think one could argue the Lions are getting a heckuva bargain. He'll turn 30 this season, and he's missed five games over the past two seasons with various injuries, but he's still so smooth. I don't think he's lost any speed, which he uses in combination with his size (6-foot-5, 236 pounds) to devastating effect. He's also a super individual, someone who never loafs on routes where he's not the primary. Simply put, he's a tough, tough out. Yes, Detroit has invested quite a bit more in Johnson than you would in most receivers -- but then, he's produced at a level that far eclipses the average pass catcher. In the three seasons since he signed the deal, Johnson has racked up more receiving yards than anyone else in the NFL (4,533) and set the current single-season record with 1,964 in 2012. He demands the attention of the defense, opening things up for teammates like Golden Tate, and has a sizable impact on games. I also don't see any decline in his ability whatsoever. Of course, the Lions will have a decision to make next offseason, given that Johnson is currently set to count for $24 million against the cap in 2016. He's entrenched as a starting quarterback, and will be paid a ton of money for the next five years. It's not like the Lions are going to consider moving on from him. Boom or bust? Re-assessing big WR contracts (1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions - The deal: Signed an eight-year, $130 million contract in March 2012, with $53 million guaranteed. Stats since signing: 43 games in three seasons, 277 catches, 4,533 receiving yards, 25 receiving touchdowns. Johnson is getting paid a boatload of money, but even so, I think one could argue the Lions are getting a heckuva bargain. He'll turn 30 this season, and he's missed five games over the past two seasons with various injuries, but he's still so smooth. I don't think he's lost any speed, which he uses in combination with his size (6-foot-5, 236 pounds) to devastating effect. He's also a super individual, someone who never loafs on routes where he's not the primary. Simply put, he's a tough, tough out. Yes, Detroit has invested quite a bit more in Johnson than you would in most receivers -- but then, he's produced at a level that far eclipses the average pass catcher. In the three seasons since he signed the deal, Johnson has racked up more receiving yards than anyone else in the NFL (4,533) and set the current single-season record with 1,964 in 2012. He demands the attention of the defense, opening things up for teammates like Golden Tate, and has a sizable impact on games. I also don't see any decline in his ability whatsoever. Of course, the Lions will have a decision to make next offseason, given that Johnson is currently set to count for $24 million against the cap in 2016. He's entrenched as a starting quarterback, and will be paid a ton of money for the next five years. It's not like the Lions are going to consider moving on from him.
