Getting Notre Dame edge defender Julian Okwara (PFF rank 28) at pick 67 and Ohio State guard Jonah Jackson (PFF rank 40) at pick 75 were both massive steals compared to our board. If he gets back to that level, this can be a strong unit. Kenny Golladay is one of the best young receivers in football and led the league in touchdowns last season. Behind him, No. 2 receiver Marvin Jones is coming off a trip to IR and the depth behind him isn’t that desirable. They’ll be counting on T.J. Hockenson to live up to his billing as the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. (Lions RB Kerryon Johnson: It was quite telling that embattled GM Bob Quinn, facing a mandate to field a playoff contender next season, used a second-round pick on Georgia running back D'Andre Swift. Johnson has shown promise in bursts, but the 2018 second-round pick has missed 14 games in his first two NFL seasons with injuries to both of his knees. Rotoworld Hayden Winks (Lions (Grade: D):  After phone calls weren’t returned, Detroit made the correct decision by drafting a stud corner over a defensive tackle or linebacker, positions that are less valuable and more replaceable. Okudah is an elite corner prospect. He allowed 5.0 yards per target in coverage as a 20-year-old at Ohio State, and then tested in the 96th percentile at the NFL Combine. He’s a much cheaper alternative to Darius Slay… Swift will be a good pro, but using the No. 35 pick on a running back in a deep class is a total waste, especially with Kerryon Johnson in the building already. This will be a frustrating committee for fantasy, but Swift should be the 1A… Okwara underperformed at Notre Dame due to injuries (broken fibula), but he has a lot of juice off the edge and fills a position of need for the talentless Lions Defense. Okwara should be in the rotation as a rookie… Jackson was a first-team All-Big Ten recipient at Ohio State, but he tested in the 12th percentile at the NFL Combine (5.29 forty) and is already 23 years old. He profiles as a backup, which means he will likely start for the Lions… Stenberg is a tall offensive guard (6-foot-6) but that tends to hurt him more than help him. Five players to cheer for as they start NFL careers (2) Jason Huntley, RB, Detroit Lions - Drafted No. 172 overall (Round 5).  Jason Huntley likes to have fun. On the field, he was a triple threat for the New Mexico State Aggies. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards at more than 7 yards per carry this past season, hauled in 134 career receptions during his four-year run in Las Cruces and also returned five kicks for touchdowns throughout his highlight reel of a college career.  And off the field, he doesn't seem to take himself or his confidence in his ability too seriously. Before his final home game at NMSU, Huntley called his shot, predicting he'd rush for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns vs. UTEP. He racked up just over 190 and the three TDs. So, naturally, when we had Huntley on the roster in our NFL Network production of the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl back in January, I had to ask him what his prediction would be for that game. He went back and forth for a bit, taking into account the limited opportunities an all-star game offers, but eventually settled on 50 total yards and said, "If you give it to me at the goal line, I'm gonna score."  That score came just over 5 minutes into the third quarter on a slashing scamper from 11 yards out. On just a few more touches throughout the second half, Huntley would continue to work his way toward the 50-yard mark before breaking that threshold with just under 2 minutes to go in the game. Huntley again proved his intuition, confidence and ability are worth more than what's on the stat sheet.  So, Lions fans, don't cringe if a guarantee of some kind comes courtesy of Huntley's crystal ball. 2020 NFL Draft: Ranking the top 15 undrafted free agent signings (1. TE HUNTER BRYANT TO THE DETROIT LIONS (PFF Big Board Rank: 79):  Bryant falling out of the draft is the clear-cut biggest head-scratcher on this list. He was 79th overall and the top-ranked tight end on our board, and it’s not as if we were significantly higher on him than most draft pundits. Bryant came in at 98th overall (TE3) on the consensus big board put together over at The Athletic. Barring red flags popping up related to several knee injuries he suffered in the past, Bryant falling out of the draft entirely is a shock.  That plays to the benefit of the Lions. He has arguably the best receiving chops of any tight end in this class, putting up a receiving grade of 91.7 since 2017 to go along with a class-high 2.90 yards per route run. The Lions are already pretty heavily invested at tight end between spending a first-round pick on TJ Hockenson last season and signing Jesse James to a decent-sized deal, but Bryant brings a different element to the group and has the potential to really benefit that offense.  15. S JALEN ELLIOTT TO THE DETROIT LIONS (PFF Big Board Rank: 183):  The Lions opened our list with Hunter Bryant, and they close it here with the 183rd-ranked player on our board. It’s hard not to imagine that his 4.8 time in the 40-yard dash did a number on his draft stock. That’s tough to get past when you’re talking about someone playing down the field with all the speed at the NFL level. We saw the high-end of what Elliott could do in 2018, though, with an 81.4 overall grade and an 87.6 grade in coverage. There’s a physicality to his game when paired with his length that can play in the NFL. PFF Big Board rank: 28 - Although he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11 this past year, there’s no reason Okwara should have been available in the third round. With his explosiveness off the line, overall athleticism and long arms, Okwara was a first-round talent in this draft. Prior to getting hurt, Okwara was having one of the top seasons in college football at his position by owning an elite 90.4 pass-rush grade.  PICK 75 — IOL JONAH JACKSON, DETROIT LIONS (PFF Big Board rank: 40):  No one in this draft class has better pass sets than Jonah Jackson. He gets on defensive linemen rapidly and can play anywhere along the interior. While playing for Rutgers and Ohio State the past few years, Jackson logged snaps at every interior position and performed incredibly well in pass protection, recording a pass-blocking grade on true pass sets above the 90th percentile. Every 2020 NFL Draft class, ranked (from Miami to Pittsburgh) (10. Lions - I’m not crazy about the last few picks but the Lions nailed the first two days. Okudah is a blue-chip talent at a premium position. Swift may not play an important position but he is a factor in the passing game. Jackson and Stenberg are both potential starters. And the Okwara pick addresses the team’s biggest need by adding athleticism to the edge of the defense. Even Cephus can play, even if testing numbers may not be up to snuff. While the top two guys at Oklahoma (Neville Gallimore, Marquise Overton) and LSU (Tyler Shelvin, Neil Farrell) certainly gave pause to the Buckeyes taking the spot here, it was the massive amount of snaps played, and played at a high level, for these five Ohio State interior defensive linemen that earned them the nod. Each player played at least 200 snaps this season, as the rotation pitted each to their strengths. The Utah product was just better on the football field last year — he earned a 90.6 run-defense grade for the Utes in 2019 and an 83.2 in 2018. 2020 NFL Draft: Identifying five low-risk, high-reward draft prospects (UTAH DEFENSIVE TACKLE JOHN PENISINI — EARLY-DOWN RUN-STUFFER:  This value play has more to do with what a team can do with their early picks rather than what Penisini brings to the table.  An early-down run-stuffer is becoming less valuable by the year, but strong run defenders still have a place in the NFL. The key is not to spend big money or high draft capital to find them, and Penisini is a perfect Day 3 option to fill a very specific run-stuffing role.  Penisini has a nose-tackle build and is tough to move at the point of attack, all of which led to a 90.6 grade against the run over the last two seasons. There are plenty of examples of quality run-stoppers who were taken in the middle to late rounds over the last few seasons, including Poona Ford, Greg Gaines and Michael Pierce. So, waiting on a player like Penisini will keep a team from drafting a one-dimensional interior defensive lineman in the early rounds, allowing them to focus on more valuable, pass-game affecting positions. Solid pass catcher who adjusts to the errant throw and makes the reception away from his frame.  Negatives: Lacks strength and is easily brought down at the point by a single defender. Dances around the backfield too often and doesn’t turn it upfield.  Analysis: Huntley is an explosive and relatively tough ball carrier with the ability to create yardage and take it the distance. In run block drills he was moving bodies, and he will look to build on a strong performance.  Wednesday - Stenberg, similar to yesterday, had a strong performance. He’s had a good week in Mobile displaying strength, athletic ability, and consistency. He is an ascending player.  Thursday - Stenberg got better and better as the week went on. He’s one of the top interior guys here and was able to put everything together for a strong Thursday outing.  Analysis - Stenberg had a strong week from start to finish, showing that he can be one of the top guards in the class. Senior Bowl Offensive Linemen (Logan Stenberg, Kentucky (G):  Not many interior offensive linemen are 6-foot-6 like offensive tackles and there is a reason for that. Unlike offensive tackles who sort of fan out and flow around in a wider set of space, interior linemen are more or less locked into a tight area right in front of the quarterback. Quarterbacks have to be able to throw over the top of them and some simply can’t or struggle to do so. Logan Stenberg is looking to transcend that “rule.” At 6-foot-6, 322-pounds, Stenberg is a hefty dude who started for four seasons at left guard with the Kentucky Wildcats. While team success was hit or miss, Stenberg always stood out among his o-line peers. As is often necessary in the SEC, Stenberg is a mauler in the trenches and never plays with the intention of allowing his opponent to overpower him.  In fact, Stenberg makes it a point to ensure his opponents feel the lasting effects of each and every rep. Stenberg plays with a raw power and aggression that can physically wear down opponents over the course of the game, especially if the Wildcats run game is really clicking. For coaches that want to impose their will on opponents — and even with the rise of analytics, there are plenty of these dudes around — Stenberg’s nastiness is a perfect fit. Conversely, Stenberg’s height legitimately works against him. Not only does Stenberg have the potential hindrance as a pass protector mentioned before, but being such a tall player at a position that often requires low, flexible leverage can be a problem. While there are instances in which Stenberg’s power wins out anyway, Stenberg can almost never be the lower man and will be at a significant leverage advantage most of the time in the NFL. Against bigger, better, smarter NFL athletes, that leverage difference will absolutely be felt by Stenberg. Still, Stenberg has found a way to make it work this well in the SEC for a half-decade.
