Super Bowl predictions: Who represents AFC, NFC in New Orleans? Which team wins Lombardi Trophy? (T-4. Detroit Lions - Matt Okada: Lions over Ravens. Lamar Jackson ends Kansas City’s bid at a three-peat in the AFC title game but falls to America’s New Team, the Detroit Lions, on an overtime TD pass to Jameson Williams. Nick Shook: Lions over Texans. Two teams reach their first-ever Super Bowl, but only one can emerge victorious. Agent's Take: 10 defensive bounce-back candidates (Marcus Davenport - Davenport was hoping for a fresh start with the Minnesota Vikings when he signed a one-year, $13 million deal in 2023 free agency after five injury-plagued seasons with the Saints. The injuries continued mounting last season. Davenport had two sacks in four games before going on injured reserve for the rest of the season during the middle October with a left ankle injury. It was another one-year deal for Davenport in free agency this year. He received a one-year, $6.5 million contract worth a maximum of $10.5 million through incentives from the Lions. Davenport bettering his career-high nine sacks from 2021 isn't out of the question, playing opposite Aidan Hutchinson, provided he can stay relatively healthy.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/agents-take-joey-bosa-chase-young-headline-10-defensive-bounce-back-candidates-for-2024-season/

Who calls plays for every NFL team in 2024? What to know (Detroit Lions - Playcaller: Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator.  Experience: Johnson took over playcalling duties in 2022. His creativity has helped him establish a reputation around the league as one of the brightest offensive minds. Before becoming the offensive coordinator in Detroit, Johnson spent three seasons on the staff in multiple roles such as the offensive quality control and tight ends coach.  What to know: Johnson is in constant communication with quarterback Jared Goff and has helped the Lions become one of the top offenses in the NFL. He has been a driving force behind the unit's skyrocketing production since officially being named offensive coordinator in 2022, and has turned down head coaching interest the last two offseasons to help coach Dan Campbell & Co. push for the franchise's first Super Bowl. After the Lions finished second in passing yards (4,401) and third in total offensive yards (6,712) in 2023, Johnson was named a finalist for assistant coach of the year. -- Eric Woodyard.  Key stat: The Lions have led the NFL in bunch sets in each of Johnson's two seasons as offensive coordinator (19% in 2023, 23% in 2022). -- ESPN Stats & Info):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41018846/nfl-playcallers-32-teams-mike-mcdaniel-sean-mcvay-nathaniel-hackett

Ranking the Best Skill-Position Groups of the 2024 NFL Season (7. Detroit Lions - Top weapons: RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, TE Sam LaPorta.  Detroit has a litany of talent across the board, with the only question being the receiver opposite St. Brown. Otherwise, the Lions have a two-headed backfield monster in Gibbs and David Montgomery, while LaPorta is rounding into one of the league’s top tight ends. Factor in an elite offensive line, and Detroit is a legit powerhouse.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/ranking-all-32-nfl-skill-position-groups-49ers-dolphins-chiefs

Ranking 2024 challengers to potential Chiefs three-peat (5. Detroit Lions - 2023 finish: 12-5, advanced to NFC Championship.  Top additions: OG Kevin Zeitler, DT D.J. Reader, CB Terrion Arnold.  Jared Goff may be more solid than spectacular under center, but a sterling offensive line goes a long way, and he's still got one with Zeitler coming aboard and Graham Glasgow returning to a unit also featuring star tackle Penei Sewell. The dynamic young duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown provides home-run pop, and the front seven should be slightly improved, too. The biggest hurdle might be recovering from 2023's emotional road back to the playoffs under never-say-die coach Dan Campbell.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ranking-top-10-challengers-to-potential-chiefs-three-peat-lions-49ers-among-most-promising-2024-contenders/

Ranking Top 10 practice squad classes (1. Detroit Lions (WR Donovan Peoples-Jones, QB Jake Fromm, EDGE Mitchell Agude, RB Jermar Jefferson, WR Tim Patrick, WR Tom Kennedy, WR Allen Robinson, TE Shane Zylstra, TE James Mitchell, OL Kingsley Eguakun, OT Jamarco Jones, EDGE Isaac Ukwu, EDGE Mitchell Agude, DT Chris Smith, DT Kyle Peko, DT Pat O'Connor, S C.J. Moore):  The Lions secure the top spot mostly due to the receivers on their practice squad. DPJ is one of the most explosive receivers in the NFL -- 44.5-inch vertical and 11-7 broad jump -- Robinson has lost a few steps as we've seen him bounce around the league recently, but has experience nonetheless. Patrick was a shocking cut by the Broncos after a fantastic preseason, and Kennedy has long been a preseason hero in Detroit due to his suddenness underneath and reliable hands.  At edge, Mitchell Agude registered four pressures in the preseason and feels like a young rusher with an upward-facing arrow. Lastly, JaMarco Jones is a former Ohio State offensive tackle with years of amazing preseason work on his resume. He just needs to translate some of that to the regular season if called upon as Detroit's swing tackle.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ranking-top-10-nfl-practice-squad-classes-lions-eagles-bills-lead-the-way/

2024-25 NFC North Division odds: Lions favored to make franchise history (DETROIT LIONS - 2023-24 division finish: 1st (4-2).  Bottom line: Last season was the season of "It's been forever" for the Lions. They won their fourth division title in franchise history — the division has been around since 1967 — and made it to their first NFC Championship Game since 1991. Detroit has never won the division two years in a row, and the odds suggest it will have some stiff competition, going up against a rising Packers team and a Bears squad that features No. 1 draft pick Caleb Williams.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfc-north-division-odds-lions-packers-bears-vikings

2024 NFL All-22 roster: Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sauce Gardner lead way (Wide receiver: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions - The feisty pass catcher is a WR1 who excels in working between the hashes or outside the numbers. As a polished route-runner with outstanding "RAC" (run after catch) ability, St. Brown is an unstoppable chain mover on the perimeter. While others might display flashier games, the Lions' WR1 is a dominant player with blue-chip talent and a blue-collar mentality. Center: Frank Ragnow, Detroit Lions - The three-time Pro Bowler controls the point of attack, utilizing a mix of force and finesse to get it done. Ragnow's grittiness, toughness, and athleticism set the tone for the Lions' offense while also enabling Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson to diversify their approach in key moments. For a team built on effort and toughness, Ragnow's game perfectly matches the Lions' scheme and culture.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-nfl-all-22-roster-patrick-mahomes-tyreek-hill-sauce-gardner

Best NFL wide receivers: Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill lead rankings (7. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions - Vitali: The Lions put everyone on notice about St. Brown and how much they believe in their guy. He’s their WR1, but he lines up all over. He’s also on an offense with so many creative pieces, but money talks. Detroit rewarded their former fourth-round pick with more than $30 million a year, making him one of the five-highest paid at the position. St. Brown quietly topped 1,500 yards on 119 catches, proving just how vital he is to this Lions offense. His production also resulted in points, scoring 10 touchdowns last year, with quarterback Jared Goff having a 113.7 passer rating when targeting St. Brown.  The rest of the league took notice, awarding St. Brown an All-Pro selection last season, and you can be sure that with Detroit’s success, St. Brown won’t be a very well-kept secret this year.  2023 rank: 10th (+3)):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-best-nfl-wide-receivers-justin-jefferson-tyreek-hill-lead-rankings

2024 NFL triplets rankings: Eagles, 49ers boast top quarterback/running back/pass catcher combos (5. Detroit Lions - Quarterback: Jared Goff (Age: 29), Running back: Jahmyr Gibbs (Age: 22), Pass catcher: Amon-Ra St. Brown (Age: 24).  Goff’s resurrection in Detroit -- where the quarterback has become a folk hero, prompting Lions fans to randomly chant his name in locations far and wide -- is a feel-good story of overcoming adversity. Over the last two years, Goff ranks second in the NFL in passing yards (9,013, trailing only Patrick Mahomes) and is tied for third in passing touchdowns (59, trailing only Mahomes and Josh Allen). The former No. 1 overall pick has played a leading role in transforming one of American sports’ most downtrodden franchises into a legit powerhouse. Of course, he’s not alone in this endeavor.  Over the past two years, St. Brown ranks top five in catches (225), receiving yards (2,676) and receiving first downs (143), while leading all NFL wideouts with 1,199 yards after catch. And anyone who’s derisively calling him a “slot-only” receiver is just plain wrong, as PFF charted him with 43.6 percent of his snaps in a wide alignment last season. Sun God is a well-rounded -- and well-paid -- stud.  Truthfully, though, Gibbs is the player I’m most excited to watch in the coming season. The 22-year-old is a threat to score every time he touches the ball, a true home run hitter. The Lions brought him along a little slowly during his rookie season, but he certainly made his mark by season’s end. I expect him to hit the ground running -- FAST -- in Year 2.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-triplets-rankings-eagles-49ers-boast-top-quarterback-running-back-pass-catcher-combos

2024 NFL season preview: Ranking all eight divisions (2. NFC North - Detroit roared to the top of the NFC North last season, the rare example of a team riding an offseason hype train to legitimate results. That was fine and dandy, especially for a franchise that was so starved for postseason success that Lions fans were in tears upon beating the Rams on Super Wild Card Weekend. Now, though, a new standard has been set. Following a heartbreaking loss in the NFC Championship Game, there is only one goal: get to the Super Bowl. This team has never done it, but it's also never really been better positioned to break that ground than it is in 2024, with every key contributor -- including OC Ben Johnson -- returning. The path won't exactly be a cakewalk, though, not after the Packers stunned the NFL with a red-hot second half that carried them to a blowout playoff win over the Cowboys in Arlington. Jordan Love is the real deal, and Green Bay is a serious contender. The Bears seem to have a lot of good energy right now, too, after investing in veteran talent (like Keenan Allen, D'Andre Swift) and selecting a new franchise quarterback (Caleb Williams) with the first pick of the draft. They have to show they can turn the strong vibes into on-field success. The Vikings already had some of their positive energy sapped by a meniscus injury that ended QB J.J. McCarthy's rookie year after one preseason game. But don't forget about them entirely. If anything, watch them to see if Sam Darnold can resurrect his career. If Chicago delivers, this will be a gauntlet of a division.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-season-preview-ranking-all-eight-divisions

NFL playoff predictions: Picking eight division winners, six wild-card teams for 2024 season NFC NORTH CHAMPS - 1. Detroit Lions (20 votes: Band, Battista, Bhanpuri, Blair, Cersosimo, Chadiha, Edholm, Filice, Florio, Grant, Jones-Drew, Kownack, Magdziuk, Mariucci, Okada, Parr, Reuter, Rosenthal, Shook, Zierlein.).  2. Green Bay Packers (+240) | 7 votes: Abdoo, Baca, Bergman, Gonzales, Patra, Ross, Walker.  3.  Chicago Bears (+350) | 1 vote: Rank.  After winning their first division title in 30 years last season, the Lions enter 2024 as the overwhelming favorite among our analysts to win the NFC North. But Detroit is expected to have plenty of competition, with the Packers appearing on 25 of 28 ballots, including as the top team in the division on seven of them. A strong second half in 2023, a new franchise QB and several big-name offseason additions have propelled Chicago into the playoff conversation, as well. After appearing on just six ballots last season, the Bears earned a spot on 11 this year -- the majority picking Caleb & Co. as the NFC's seventh seed. With expectations sky high in the Windy City, the Bears will look to snap their 13-year skid without a playoff win -- a streak that's three times as long as the next-closest team in the division (Minnesota at four).):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-playoff-predictions-picking-eight-division-winners-six-wild-card-teams-for-2024-season

1 under-the-radar player for every NFL team's 2024 playoff hopes, from Roger McCreary to Cooper Beebe (Detroit Lions: LB Jack Campbell - Campbell was one of head coach Dan Campbell’s maligned 2023 first round picks, and while he wasn’t the revelation Jahmyr Gibbs was, he still managed to start 12 games as a rookie. Struggles ensued — he gave up a gruesome 128.2 passer rating in coverage — but the raw talent remains.  The former Iowa star is a big, strong tackling machine with top level straight line speed to track tight ends up the seam. He plays the exact brand of football his coach expects (intelligently reckless) and finds his way to the ball for big stops. If he can pair those instincts with the position’s steep learning curve, he could be headed for a breakout in 2024.):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-underrated-players-playoffs-every-team

3 UDFAs Poised To Make An Impact In 2024 (Isaiah Williams, WR, Detroit Lions - The explosive Detroit Lions offense is entering the season searching for pass-catching weapons to emerge opposite Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. It's a big year for Jameson Williams, who must finally prove capable of meeting his pre-draft hype. An underrated weapon that could work himself into the rotation is undrafted receiver Isaiah Williams.  Williams was a preseason darling who led the Lions in receptions (11) and receiving yards (123) during the exhibition. The Illinois product also returned three kickoffs for 93 yards and six punts for 71 yards. Williams made the roster over veteran wideout Donovan Peoples-Jones. I could see him replacing Kalif Raymond in three-receiver sets while also making a sizable impact via special teams.):  https://thedraftnetwork.com/2024/08/29/nfl-udfas-poised-to-make-impact-2024

2024 NFL Preseason: Highest-graded Day 2 rookies (4. CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Detroit Lions: 80.4.  The Lions' second-round cornerback has put together a solid camp but unfortunately suffered an ankle injury at practice that kept him off the field. When he saw the field back in Week 1, Rakestraw earned an 81.7 PFF coverage grade, allowing just a 56.3 passer rating into his coverage.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-preseason-highest-pff-grade-day-2-rookies-2024

Stock up, stock down after the 2024 NFL preseason: Offensive rookies (Up - RB SIONE VAKI, DETROIT LIONS.  Vaki is another versatile player from the 2024 class, but his versatility transcends the line of scrimmage to both offense and defense. Vaki primarily played safety for Utah, but he did get a few games at running back in 2023, where he played very well and earned high grades, especially as a receiver out of the backfield. He has been working with the running backs in Detroit and continues to stand out. Vaki earned an 83.3 PFF receiving grade in the Lions' second preseason game, with four catches and 60 yards.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-stock-up-stock-down-2024-nfl-preseason-offensive-rookies

What would constitute success for all 32 NFL teams? (Detroit Lions - Proof that their 2023 breakout was not an anomaly. To be fair, Dan Campbell's warriors were also feisty at the tail end of 2022. But now these Lions are closer to top dogs than underdogs, fresh off an NFC title bid. Can the aggressive offense continue? Jared Goff's weapons and protections are second to none.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-2024-heres-what-would-constitute-success-for-all-32-teams-including-chiefs-cowboys-and-steelers/

Winners and losers from roster cuts (Winner: Hendon Hooker - In what has been a rough couple of years for Hooker, the Tennessee product finally gets a win. With the Detroit Lions releasing Nate Sudfeld, the backup job behind Jared Goff in the Motor City belongs to Hooker, who put together a solid preseason. In the preseason finale against the Steelers, Hooker got an extended look and completed 12 of his 20 pass attempts for 114 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also rushed for 93 yards on 10 attempts. While there's always a chance the Lions bring in another quarterback (possibly even Sudfeld), Hooker's play seems to be giving the club confidence that he can be the backup going forward.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2024-nfl-roster-cuts-winners-and-losers-mac-jones-hendon-hooker-secure-backup-jobs/

Ranking the QB-coach duos for 2024: Mahomes-Reid No. 1 (8. Jared Goff/Dan Campbell (Detroit Lions) - The other new duo to make the list for the first time, Goff and Campbell are taking the Lions to heights the franchise hasn't seen since 1991 -- which was the last time the franchise made the conference championship game before last season. The Lions won their first division title since the 1993 season and their first playoff game since the 1991 season last season, having arguably their most successful year since 1957. Detroit won two playoff games in 2023 after winning one in the previous 65 seasons combined.  Goff is 20-7 over his last 27 starts with the Lions, throwing for 47 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He's the third quarterback in franchise history to win multiple playoff games, joining Tobin Rote (1957) and Bobby Layne (1952, 1953). Goff ranked first in the NFL in passing first downs (227), second in passing yards (4,575), second in 20-yard passes (69) and fourth in passing touchdowns (30). This was the second time in franchise history a Lions quarterback has thrown for at least 4,500 passing yards and 30 touchdowns in a season. Through the first eight seasons of a quarterback's career in NFL history, Goff ranks third in 300-yard games (36), fourth in completions (2,657), fifth in passing yards (30,429), seventh in attempts (4,107), and ninth in passer rating (93.6).  Campbell is just the third coach in Lions history to win multiple playoff games, joining Buddy Parker (1953) and George Wilson (1957). Detroit did not lose consecutive games within a single season for the first time since 1972. The Lions won four prime-time games in 2023, their most ever in a single season, and won multiple playoff games in the same year for the first time in the Super Bowl era.  The culture has changed in Detroit under Goff and Campbell. The Lions may be primed to earn a Super Bowl appearance for the first time in franchise history under this duo.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ranking-nfls-top-10-quarterback-coach-duos-for-2024-chiefs-patrick-mahomes-and-andy-reid-remain-no-1/

2024 Best NFL running backs: Christian McCaffrey, Derrick Henry lead rankings (7. Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions - Carmen Vitali: Taking Jahmyr Gibbs 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft was a decision mocked by most outside Detroit. General manager Brad Holmes knew he took a risk, but he also knew what his football team needed — and it turns out, he was totally right.  Gibbs proceeded to ascend into a focal point for Ben Johnson’s offense in Detroit last season. His variable skill set is his greatest asset, as is his ability to come in clutch — especially in the low red zone. Time and time again, quarterback Jared Goff handed the ball off to Gibbs when they needed a score and, time and time again, Gibbs delivered. Ten times, to be exact. He added another one through the air against Denver last season. In all, he averaged a whopping 5.19 yards per carry in his first season as a pro, which ranked fourth among qualified ball carriers, according to Next Gen Stats. Gibbs and Devon Achane were the only two rookies in the top 10 for average, and it’s presumably only up from here for both.  2023 rank: unranked):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-best-nfl-running-backs-christian-mccaffrey-derrick-henry-lead-rankings

NFL 2024 preview: 10 potential breakouts include a couple of young Detroit Lions (Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams - This list should be dedicated to Williams. Nobody is in a more obvious spot to break out. Williams was the 12th pick of the 2022 NFL Draft whose career got off to a slow start due to his recovery from a torn ACL at Alabama and a suspension for betting. He came on late last season, showing the game-breaking speed that made him a high draft pick. The Lions are thin at receiver after Amon-Ra St. Brown, and their offense will be very good once again. If Williams doesn't break out this season it's on him because the situation for it is ideal.  Detroit Lions S Ifeatu Melifonwu - Melifonwu got a starting job in Week 14 last season. His play after that was eye-opening. In eight games, counting playoffs, Melifonwu had 30 solo tackles, five sacks (including two games with more than one sack) and two interceptions. He moved from cornerback to safety during the 2022 season and finally saw a payoff late last season. Melifonwu isn't even guaranteed to start at the beginning of the season for a deep Lions team, but his playmaking last season was tough to ignore.):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-2024-preview-10-potential-breakouts-include-a-couple-of-young-detroit-lions-130100826.html

Every NFL team's most surprising roster cut (Detroit Lions: DT Kyle Peko - The veteran nose tackle quietly turned in a very strong training camp, often getting first-team reps with DJ Reader still sidelined. Peko even flashed some pass-rush ability to go with his hard-nosed, smart run defense. With his old Titans DL coach, Terrell Williams, coaching him in Detroit, Peko felt like a no-brainer, especially with Reader just being activated and Brodric Martin headed to I.R. The Lions only kept four DTs on the initial 53-man roster, which is also a bigger surprise than any WR or TE they parted with. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-roster-cut-surprises-by-team-2024/

Surprise NFL Roster Cuts: Notable Players Released Include Kadarius Toney, Desmond Ridder, D’Onta Foreman, Noah Brown, Carl Lawson (Detroit Lions | QB Nate Sudfeld - “I mean, let’s start with (Hendon) Hooker. You want to know, plain and simple, it’s hard for me to just jump right in and say, ‘Man, he’s, you feel great at No. 2.’ I think of him as, is he growing?”  That’s what Lions head coach Dan Campbell said about Hooker after his club’s preseason finale.  Nevertheless, Detroit is rolling with the 2023 third-round choice as Jared Goff’s backup after cutting Sudfeld on Tuesday. While Hooker flashed during the exhibition season, the Lions could still explore QB2 options this week.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/surprise-nfl-roster-cuts-2024/

Agent's Take: 10 non-QB offensive bounce-back players (Jameson Williams - The Lions used the 12th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on Williams knowing that his rookie year was going to be jeopardized because he tore the ACL in his left knee during the College Football Playoff National Championship game that January. His development was hindered in 2023 because of a four-game suspension to start the season for violating the NFL's gambling policy. Williams had 24 for receptions for 354 yards with two touchdowns in 12 games last season.  Josh Reynolds leaving in free agency for the Denver Broncos opens up a starting spot for Williams. He'll need to be an upgrade over Reynolds, who had 40 catches for 608 yards with five touchdowns last season, to convince the Lions to exercise an option for a fifth year in 2026. Williams' fully guaranteed option year salary should at a minimum be more than $15 million.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/agents-take-nick-chubb-stefon-diggs-headline-10-non-qb-offensive-bounce-back-candidates-for-2024-season/

32 Super Dreams: Why your team has a shot to win Super Bowl LIX ... really (3. Detroit Lions (+1200 to win Super Bowl) - First of all, if Dan Campbell says the Lions are going to win a f----g Super Bowl soon, it's safer not to argue with him. Also, don't forget how close they came last season. They had a 24-7 halftime lead in the NFC Championship Game — a fact Campbell surely won't let his players ever forget. They somehow kept offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, so the offense should be just as good. They restocked the secondary, which was their biggest defensive weakness. And after that second-half collapse in San Francisco, no team in the league is more motivated to win it all.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/super-bowl-lix-why-your-team-has-shot-win

Highest-graded quarterbacks by route type in 2023: Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins and more (HITCH: JARED GOFF, DETROIT LIONS (88.3) - No route was targeted more by quarterbacks in 2023 than the hitch route, and no quarterback earned a higher grade when targeting them than Jared Goff.  Goff completed 81.0% of his attempts to hitch routes for 675 yards and one touchdown. Having short-yardage monsters like Amon-Ra St. Brown, who earned the highest hitch route grade in the NFL among receivers (97.1), and Sam LaPorta, who earned an 81.0 receiving grade in his rookie season, makes the job all the easier.  IN: JARED GOFF, DETROIT LIONS (93.2) - So much of the modern NFL is about attacking the middle of the field in the passing game — exactly what in-breaking routes are designed to do. No one did them better than Jared Goff and the 2023 Lions. Goff’s 93.2 PFF overall grade when targeting in routes led the league, as he completed 66.7% of his attempts for 686 yards and three touchdowns, making five big-time throws in the process.  SEAM: JARED GOFF, DETROIT LIONS (98.0)
Goff’s passing performance in 2023 was to be admired. His 85.2 PFF passing grade was the highest of his career and ranked sixth in the NFL, as he threw for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns. Having already led the NFL in hitch and in route grades, Goff also paced the league in seam route grade.  He completed 72.7% of his targets up the seam for 200 yards and three touchdowns, and he added six big-time throws. NFL 2024 preview: 16 NFC QB questions that include Caleb Williams, Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy (Detroit Lions - Will Jared Goff thrive under Super Bowl expectations?  I love what Goff has become in Detroit. He has been everything the team could want from a leadership centerpiece, and his output is once again reaching his best levels as a Los Angeles Ram. That said, he’s now stewarding a Detroit Lions team that arrives in 2024 in a vastly different place. One year ago, they were an upstart franchise with fun Super Bowl potential. Now that potential has been replaced with the target of being expected to be among the NFC’s elite, right alongside the San Francisco 49ers. Make no mistake, they are getting circled on every opposing calendar. Beating Detroit now means something, so the Lions can expect every team’s “A” game from week to week.  That kind of scenario puts leadership at a premium, especially at the quarterback spot, where elite players often have an ability to bring a sense of calm and confidence to an organization. How Goff leads the Lions out of the gate will matter, especially after losing underrated “glue” guy Josh Reynolds from the wide receiver room, and needing 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams to step up and consistently produce in a No. 2 receiver role. If Williams can do that, and second-year tight end Sam LaPorta can build on an All-Pro rookie season — and Amon-Ra St. Brown can simply replicate his All-Pro season from 2023 — the soon-to-be 30-year-old Goff may still have some ceiling left in his game. Rarely does everything go right in the NFL. Especially under intense expectations. How Goff responds to unavoidable adversity will deeply impact Detroit’s season.:  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-2024-preview-16-nfc-qb-questions-that-include-caleb-williams-dak-prescott-and-brock-purdy-140051759.html

NFL Backup QB Rankings: How All 32 No. 2 Quarterbacks Stack Up Entering 20242 (9. Nate Sudfeld, Detroit Lions - While 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker is competing for Detroit’s backup quarterback job, veteran Nate Sudfeld is QB2 on the Lions’ unofficial depth chart and started the club’s first two preseason games.  Hooker has flashed throughout the preseason, but Detroit reportedly still viewed Sudfeld as its backup quarterback entering Saturday’s exhibition finale (which Hooker started).):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-backup-qb-rankings/

Ranking the NFL's top-30 running backs in 2024 (6. Jahmyr Gibbs, Lions (age: 22) - Gibbs saw a gradual expansion of his explosive rookie role to support David Montgomery last season. He is a great receiver with room to grow as a straight-up power runner. He was worth every bit the early first-round pick for this blocking system.  20. David Montgomery, Lions (age: 27) - Montgomery also got his key touches to support a dynamic rookie, as the former Bear shot up to an easy career-high 4.6 yards per carry off the best run blocking in his career. He is also bound to see some TD regression after popping into the end zone 13 times.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-running-back-rankings-2024-rbs/ec3aec3b319830d9bfed2e96

2024 NFL cutdown deadline takeaways: Flurry of trades; lingering questions for 49ers (6. Lions make a decision on QB2: There were a number of fascinating backup quarterback battles across the NFL this August, few more interesting than in Detroit.  The Lions drafted Hendon Hooker in 2023 knowing they were getting a redshirt type of player who was coming off an ACL tear. He spent last season on the non-football injury list while he prepared to battle for the backup job this season with Nate Sudfeld.  Hooker appeared to be the more talented of the two this preseason, although his performance was far from pristine, and Lions head coach Dan Campbell seemed to tip his hand when he previously said Sudfeld had the "upper hand" in that battle because of experience. ."You have to have conviction that whoever that guy is is going to be able to keep this ship afloat," Campbell recently said. .But instead the Lions cut Sudfeld, making Hooker the immediate backup. If Jared Goff went down, the Lions' Super Bowl hopes would rest on the backup's shoulders. .Goff being something of an iron man, having started 35 straight games (38 if we count playoffs), helps. Sudfeld has taken nine regular-season snaps as a Lion. It also would make sense if he landed on Detroit's practice squad. But with the revision of the QB roster rules, "emergency" QBs no longer can be called up as they were last year; they need to be on the 53-man roster on game days.  Hooker was a third-rounder for a reason, and there's even a scenario where he could be the Lions' starter in a few years when Goff's cap number jumps to nearly $70 million. But for now, he remains a highly talented backup who's one snap away from playing on a really good team.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-cutdown-deadline-takeaways-flurry-of-trades-lingering-questions-for-49ers

10 Most Notable Players Released on 2024 NFL Cutdown Day (Tim Patrick, Denver Broncos - Tim Patrick was a fan favorite in Denver, but the team made the tough decision to part ways with the veteran wide receiver on Tuesday. Injuries have kept Patrick off the field since 2021, as an ACL cost him the 2022 season and an Achilles injury sidelined him in 2023. When healthy he's been extremely productive, but ultimately the team chose to move on after selecting a pair of wide receivers (Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele) in this year's draft.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/10-most-notable-players-released-on-2024-nfl-cutdown-day-01j6atn0np9k

NFL roster cut deadline winners, losers: Tough breaks for notable names (WINNERS - Hendon Hooker: It’s been a fairly rough 21 months for the 2022 SEC Offensive Player of the Year, who also finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting that year even though his senior season at Tennessee ended prematurely when Hooker tore an ACL. He was a third-round pick last year but effectively took a medical redshirt with the Detroit Lions as his knee recovered. Apparently it’s sufficiently better now that Hooker, who made his preseason debut this year, has evidently won the QB2 job behind Jared Goff after Detroit cut veteran journeyman Nate Sudfeld. Now Hooker is one snap – or some mop-up opportunities – away from showing he could be the prospect the Lions thought he was when they made that 2023 draft investment.):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/nate-davis/2024/08/27/nfl-cuts-roster-deadline-winners-losers/74969514007/

Good, bad, ugly from each NFL team's preseason finale (Detroit Lions
Result: Beat Pittsburgh Steelers (24-17) - The good: Backup quarterback Hendon Hooker stuffs the stat sheet. Hooker hasn't been perfect since returning from the torn ACL, but he played well enough to help lead Detroit to victory with 114 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception (that was deflected because his target ran a bad route) through the air. Hooker also led the game in rushing yards with 93 on 10 carries. He has improved plenty with regular game reps this preseason, but there is still more room to grow.  The bad: Kicker Jake Bates missed a 30-yard field goal. He made up for it by hitting on a 46-yarder right up the middle, but that missed field goal and a missed extra point against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 of the preseason provide cause for some concern.  The ugly: The Lions' backup offensive line. Hooker was sacked four times in the first quarter, and three of them occurred concurrently on the first offensive drive. Detroit's subs need to watch tape and figure out what went wrong. At least they didn't give up a sack in the second half with Hooker using his legs much more to take off and run.);  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/good-bad-ugly-from-each-nfl-teams-preseason-finale-saints-spencer-rattler-shines-eagles-qbs-struggle/

Bears' Caleb Williams and Giants' Malik Nabers headline preseason NFL All-Rookie Team (Cornerbacks - Terrion Arnold:  Arnold is a quintessential Aaron Glenn cornerback: well-coached, accountable and physical. Lassiter's athletic testing did not match his film, which led to him dropping in the 2024 NFL Draft.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/bears-caleb-williams-and-giants-malik-nabers-headline-preseason-nfl-all-rookie-team/

10 Highest paid wide receivers in the NFL (4 (tie). Amon-Ra St. Brown: $30M - Amon-Ra St. Brown recorded 15 games in his career with over 100 receiving yards, breaking the Lions record for most such games in a player's first three seasons.
Since entering the league in 2021, he is one of five receivers in that span to record over 3,500 receiving yards, 315 receptions, and over 20 receiving touchdowns (Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, CeeDee Lamb, Stefon Diggs).):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/what-nfls-largest-wide-receiver-contracts-ever

1 Surprise Breakout Player for Every NFL Team This Season: Bryce Young, Malik Nabers, and Others Could Emerge (Detroit Lions | Jameson Williams - In his first two seasons in the NFL, Jameson Williams hasn’t reached the heights many thought he could. Totaling fewer than 400 yards through two seasons isn’t what’s expected from the 12th overall pick in 2022.. However, with no injury or suspension holding Williams back this season, his chances to break out are high. With his speed, he’s always a threat to beat defenses over the top.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/1-surprise-breakout-player-every-nfl-team-2024/

1 Bold Prediction for Every NFL Team This Season: Caleb Williams Leads Bears to the Super Bowl (Detroit Lions: Sam LaPorta Leads Team in Receptions.  After a first-team All-Pro campaign, Amon-Ra St. Brown is likely to finally receive the respect from opponents that he has so clearly believed he’s deserved all along. He’s still likely to lead the team in receiving yards due to his big-play ability, but with defenses so heavily focused on his portion of the field, there could be an opening for LaPorta to break out even further after a highly impressive rookie campaign.  Last season, as a rookie, he caught 86 passes compared to 119 for St. Brown. Increased volume in year two is very plausible for a player like LaPorta, while St. Brown could have a tougher job than he did a year ago.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/1-bold-prediction-for-every-nfl-team-2024/
