Which NFL Team Deserves To Reach 1st Super Bowl The Most? (1. Detroit Lions - All-Time Playoff Record: 1-12, 0 NFC Championship appearances, 57 NFL Seasons.  That playoff record should tell you all that you need to know. It should not be possible to reach the NFL playoffs 12 different times in 57 years and only win once.   The Lions for me are what the Los Angeles Clippers have been like throughout their history in the NBA. They have had very talented players. They have had teams that on paper should be legitimate contenders. And it does not matter. Someway, somehow, they will lose, and it will hurt.   The Lions had one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL for more than a decade and went 0-3 in the playoffs with him. Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson are both top-five all-time at their positions, and between them, they have just one playoff win and two early retirements.   If you’ve been a Lions fan for all 57 years they’ve suffered in the NFL, I have just one question—what is the point?  The arrow is thankfully pointing up for Detroit following last year’s 9-8 campaign, and I hope for the sake of anyone who earnestly loves this Lions franchise that they one day get to enjoy any form of sustained success. It’s also the team I least believe that it will ever happen to because, just like the Clippers in the NBA, they’re the one NFL team that I truly believe is cursed. Early 2023 NFL roster rankings for all 32 teams: Strengths, weaknesses, rookies to watch and more (13. DETROIT LIONS - Biggest strength in 2023: Pass Rush.  The Lions got 17.5 sacks between rookies Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston IV, the latter of which played only seven games. A full season of that duo, on top of production from John Cominsky, Julian Okwara and Josh Paschal, can create a lot of problems for opposing quarterbacks.  Biggest weakness in 2023: Receiver depth.  After Amon-Ra St. Brown, the most receiving yards among returning Lions is Kalif Raymond’s 616. St. Brown will continue to be the focal point of the offense, but there are a lot of question marks for the rest of this group.  X-Factor for 2023: WR Jameson Williams.  msHaving played only six games as a rookie due to injury, Williams was slated for a bigger role in 2023 before he was suspended six games for gambling. However, because of the lack of receiving depth on the roster, Williams will have every opportunity to become a major contributor upon his return.  Rookie to watch: RB Jahmyr Gibbs.  The Lions shocked everyone by taking a running back with the 12th overall selection despite already having David Montgomery and D’Andre Swift on the roster. They traded Swift to the Eagles shortly after, opening up the role of receiving back for the former Alabama speedster.  Over/Under 9 win total: Under.  This is a difficult team to project because of how much they overachieved in 2022 and the ever-changing NFC North landscape. Ranking NFL divisions 1-8 after 2023 free agency, draft (6. NFC North: Significant change occurred in this division with Aaron Rodgers no longer employed with the Green Bay Packers. Jordan Love takes the reins in Green Bay, quarterbacking a young roster that has playmakers on offense in Christian Watson and Aaron Jones. Jaylen Reed is an intriguing rookie receiver while rookie tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft are worth monitoring.  The Detroit Lions are expected to be the top contenders for the division title after revamping their secondary and renovating their running back room with David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. Marvin Jones is an underrated signing at wide receiver, especially with Jameson Williams suspended for six games. The Chicago Bears have improved the offensive line, but the big addition was acquiring D.J. Moore from the Carolina Panthers -- giving Justin Fields a No. 1 wide receiver. Chicago also revamped the linebacker core with Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards.  What about the Minnesota Vikings? They did win the division last season, but they weren't active in free agency (Josh Oliver was their biggest signing). Releasing Adam Thielen hurt the offense and Dalvin Cook's future is uncertain. Rookie Jordan Addison should help out the wide receiver group.  The NFC North is unpredictable with Rodgers out of the picture -- what will happen here is a big question mark. DeAndre Hopkins landing spots: Bills, Chiefs, Lions among best NFL team fits for free-agent receiver (Detroit Lions - Surprise! Free agency proved Detroit is indeed a desirable destination these days, and Hopkins would fit into this roster seamlessly.  With everyone available, the Lions would be looking at a receiving corps featuring Hopkins, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams (after serving his suspension), Marvin Jones and Josh Reynolds. That's a far cry from the group they played with for most of 2022, and after a productive offensive season with less, the potential would make Lions fans salivate.  A year ago, this would have been a laughable landing spot. But as free-agent signee David Montgomery said this week, Dan Campbell is a coach for whom players want to run through a wall. Hopkins would provide Detroit with an experienced target who could also help guide the team through what Lions fans hope will be a run to the postseason. Three DeAndre Hopkins Free Agency Destinations (Detroit Lions: This is an interesting place for Hopkins to land. The Lions could use some reinforcements in the wideout room after Jameson Williams got hit with a six-game suspension for gambling. They have $17 million in cap space to work with right now so they could probably outbid most of the other suitors. And of the teams with over $10 million in cap space Detroit is probably the best set up to win this season, which theoretically gives Hopkins everything he's looking for.  The Lions just might not be interested. At least publicly they've put a notably strong emphasis on adding guys to the locker room that fit their culture and Hopkins is basically a mercenary right now, which isn't a bad thing but not really Detroit's vibe under Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. Wright has done well for himself as a former undrafted free agent who played his way into a starting role. However, he cannot match LaPorta’s speed, receiving ability or overall versatility. JONAH JACKSON, DETROIT LIONS - Jackson has struggled in pass protection during his first three years, with sub-60.0 PFF pass-blocking grades in all three seasons. Ranking 2023 NFL defenses: Cowboys, Pats among elite (Somewhat Unlikely - Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans.  Even with Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit lacks the pass-rush juice to make a push for the top 10 despite a much-improved secondary thanks to numerous additions in free agency (Cameron Sutton, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Emmanuel Moseley) and the draft (Brian Branch). Bringing in DeMeco Ryans as head coach and landing the top pass-rusher in the draft in Will Anderson Jr. is a nice start for the Texans, but this is still a very shallow bunch of talent. 2023 NFL Draft: Consensus grades from best to worst for all 32 teams (25. Detroit Lions: 2.54.  There is the Detroit Lions’ concept of positional value, and there is everybody else’s. They proved that with the first-round picks of Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell. Running backs and linebackers might not matter to other teams, but they do to these guys. My only issue is that I had borderline second-round grades on each player, and these aren’t the kinds of positions where other teams are generally trading up to grab them.  In any event, Detroit’s second round saved their draft. Brian Branch is a do-it-all defensive back who projects well everywhere from slot to safety, and I can’t wait to see how defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn deploys him, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, and Kerby Joseph. And Sam LaPorta will do a lot more in Ben Johnson’s offense than he was able to in Iowa’s “three yards and a cloud of meh” system.  The Hendon Hooker and Brodric Martin picks (Martin is a massive dude who can also get after the quarterback) are cool, and the Hooker pick may turn out to be one of the steals of this draft. TAYLOR DECKER, DETROIT LIONS:  Decker missed the first half of the 2021 season but delivered in pass protection as soon as he got back on the field, finishing the year with an 84.0 PFF pass-blocking grade. PFF Running Back Rankings: Top 32 ahead of the 2023 NFL season (32. DAVID MONTGOMERY, DETROIT LIONS:  Montgomery might not have the same flashy plays as other backs but he runs hard every carry. And because of that, he’s been a consistently productive player. He's rushed for more than 1,000 yards only once, but over the past four years ranks in the top 10 in total rushing yards. Seven teams who could make jump into postseason in 2023 (Detroit Lions:  A bigger favorite to make the playoffs (-170) at Caesars than the Jets, the Fighting Dan Campbells are the trendy selection for NFC North champs ahead of the season. With good reason: the roster is stout and the Lions have improved under Campbell significantly, overcoming some tough losses last year to make an impressive push for the playoffs. Jared Goff isn't playing the best football of his career, but it's pretty darn close. Detroit's offensive line can keep it in any game, and if the Jahmyr Gibbs pick pans out, the running game will be a problem. DETROIT LIONS - Biggest strength in 2023: Pass Rush.  The Lions got 17.5 sacks between rookies Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston IV, the latter of which played only seven games. A full season of that duo, on top of production from John Cominsky, Julian Okwara and Josh Paschal, can create a lot of problems for opposing quarterbacks.  Biggest weakness in 2023: Receiver depth.  After Amon-Ra St. Brown, the most receiving yards among returning Lions is Kalif Raymond’s 616. St. Brown will continue to be the focal point of the offense, but there are a lot of question marks for the rest of this group.  X-Factor for 2023: WR Jameson Williams.  Having played only six games as a rookie due to injury, Williams was slated for a bigger role in 2023 before he was suspended six games for gambling. However, because of the lack of receiving depth on the roster, Williams will have every opportunity to become a major contributor upon his return. Rookie to watch: RB Jahmyr Gibbs.  The Lions shocked everyone by taking a running back with the 12th overall selection despite already having David Montgomery and D’Andre Swift on the roster. They traded Swift to the Eagles shortly after, opening up the role of receiving back for the former Alabama speedster.  Over/Under 9 win total: Under.  This is a difficult team to project because of how much they overachieved in 2022 and the ever-changing NFC North landscape. Detroit blew the Jamaal Williams negotiations and then signed David Montgomery at the same cost. Next, they pivoted to Gibbs and dealt off D’Andre Swift for a bag of chips. It’s a bit bizarre from the outside looking in. To his credit, Gibbs is talented enough to make everyone forget all of this. Projection: 195 carries, 897 rushing yards, 413 receiving yards, eight touchdowns. Impact Factor: 8.3.  Rd1.No.18 Jack Campbell, ILB, Iowa: He fits the Lions mold and makes the Lions much deeper but one wonders what happens to Malcolm Rodriguez with Alex Anzalone entrenched as one starter. Campbell is best-suited as a two down backer. Projection: 16 games played, 13 starts, 78 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, one interception. Impact Factor: 7.8.  Rd2.No.34 Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa: An excellent addition for Jared Goff, especially inside the red zone. The team clearly did not want to pay TJ Hockenson (Vikings) who they dealt within their own division. Projection: 17 games played, 15 starts, 44 catches, 516 receiving yards, four touchdowns. Impact Factor: 7.8.  Rd2.No.45 Brian Branch, FS, Alabama: Possibly the greatest value selection of the entire draft, Branch has the potential to become a top safety in the NFL. It should be fun to watch him defy the odds! Projection: 17 games played, nine starts, 50 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two interceptions. Impact Factor: 7.7.  Rd3.No.68 Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee: Some thought Hooker would be a good fit in the first round. Great move, as he could be their quarterback of the future. If not, it only cost them a third round pick. Well played by GM Brad Holmes. Projection: redshirt year. Impact Factor: 6.4.  Rd3.No.96 Brodric Martin, DT, Western Kentucky: This was a trade up move to ensure the services of Martin who will bring a high motor to the defensive line rotation. Projection: 14 games played, one start, 18 tackles, two tackles for loss. Impact Factor: 6.5.  Rd5.No.152 Colby Sorsdal, OT, William & Mary: Give Detroit credit for leaving no stone unturned, not many had Sorsdal on their radar. He’ll need time to develop. Projection: five games played. Impact Factor: 6.3.  Rd7.No.220 Antoine Green, WR, North Carolina: Likely a special teams selection, Detroit must see something that most others do not. 2023 offseason grades for all 32 NFL teams: Eagles, Bengals among those to earn As (DETROIT LIONS (Offseason Grade: A-):  The Lions have had an exceptional offseason. They set about free agency filling all of their biggest holes on the roster, buying the team the flexibility to draft the best player available and not have to chase needs. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Emmanuel Moseley and Cameron Sutton could all see the majority of snaps in the secondary, while David Montgomery can carry the load at running back and Graham Glasgow provides valuable interior stability on the offensive line.  Their draft was a curious run of low-value positions, but it’s hard to dislike the players they drafted. Jahmyr Gibbs is the most difficult pick to endorse from an opportunity-cost standpoint, but the Lions brought in some excellent players. After becoming NFL darlings for playing late-year spoiler in 2022, the Lions got busy addressing the secondary and ended up with at least three feisty new starters in Cameron Sutton, C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Emmanuel Moseley. Then, in an unorthodox draft, they added juice in the backfield with RB Jahmyr Gibbs. 1 glaring flaw that could sink all 32 NFL teams' Super Bowl 58 hopes (Detroit Lions: They really could have used another pass rusher with one of those first round picks.  Lukas Van Ness, Calijah Kancey, Myles Murphy and Will McDonald IV were all on the board when the Lions made their first draft pick at No. 12. Kancey and Murphy were still available when they made their second selection at No. 18. But instead general manager Martin Mayhew opted for a running back and inside linebacker with those picks — and then held true to his avoidance of edge rushers or down linemen with pass rushing experience through the entire 2023 NFL Draft.  That’s not to say Detroit didn’t fill needs, particularly on defense where Jack Campbell and Brian Branch can be immediate difference makers. But Aidan Hutchinson needed a proper running mate up front and now he’ll rely on John Cominsky and Charles Harris to keep opposing quarterbacks from escaping. A rebuilt secondary could mean this is a superfluous concern.
