One thing we learned about each team in 2024 NFL season (Detroit Lions:  The offense is the best the NFL has seen this decade: This decade has reached the halfway point at the conclusion of 2024, but the Lions offense has taken over the title of the most potent unit. The offense averages 33.3 points per game, the most since the 2018 Chiefs (35.3), and have five games with 40+ points and zero turnovers this season -- an NFL record. The six 40+ point games this season are tied for the most in NFL history and Detroit is the second team in NFL history to have 35+ passing touchdowns and 25+ rushing touchdowns in a season -- joining the 2000 Rams. Detroit's offense can win the franchise its first Super Bowl, and may have to carry the team to the championship game.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/one-thing-we-learned-about-each-team-in-2024-nfl-season-end-for-kyle-shanahan-lions-offense-stands-alone/

Five things we liked and didn't like from NFL Week 17 (4. Kerby Joseph, playmaker extraordinaire
The injury-ravaged Lions defense is not the force it once was. It's not close. Since Week 14, Detroit has allowed at least 30 points three times in four games, including 34 to the skeleton crew 49ers in Week 17. The Lions didn't allow 30 points once in the first 13 weeks.  From Weeks 1-13, Detroit was sixth in defensive success rate. Since Week 14, they are 29th. Only the bottom-feeding Patriots, Jets and Panthers are worse.  There are two ways to be an effective defense. One is to be really good down-to-down, meaning a high success rate. The other is to create havoc -- negative plays, turnovers, etc. Splash plays that can bail you out when you're struggling down-to-down.  Kerby Joseph helped the Lions be the latter Monday night, with the game completely turning on its head thanks to two Joseph interceptions.Joseph has a league-high nine interceptions this year, the most by a Lion since Jimmy Allen in 1981. The first one was catching practice, but the second was a really great, aggressive play. He is helping hold things together on the back end.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/five-things-we-liked-and-didnt-like-in-nfl-week-17-including-vikings-keep-foot-on-gas-colts-s-t-the-bed/

Ranking the top 10 games of 2024 NFL season (9. Lions 34, Packers 31 (Week 14):  Detroit got its 11th straight victory in this one, but it didn't come easy, with Dan Campbell famously dialing up one fourth-down call after another, including a fourth-and-1 at Green Bay's 21-yard line with just 23 seconds left. It was a statement NFC North victory for the juggernaut darling of the league. 4. Lions 31, Vikings 29 (Week 7):  A highly anticipated showdown of NFC heavyweights, this divisional clash was a sight to behold for fans of high-flying offense. Both Jared Goff and Sam Darnold slung it with authority, and while Brian Flores' turnover-magnet defense fought late, a Jake Bates field goal ultimately handed Minny its first loss.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ranking-the-top-10-nfl-games-of-2024-season-bengals-ravens-among-most-entertaining-contenders-of-the-year/

2025 NFL playoffs: Ranking top five potential Super Wild Card Weekend matchups, including Bengals vs. Bills (5. Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams:  The Los Angeles Rams have gone a roundabout way to lock in the NFC West and a spot in the playoffs, but they're in. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions also have a playoff position locked up, but where specifically is still to be determined. If they defeat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, the Lions will be the No. 1 seed and have the first-round bye that comes with it. However, if they lose this game, they'd drop to the No. 5 seed in the NFC. And if the Rams fall to the Cardinals in Week 18 and Tampa Bay defeats the Saints, Los Angeles would sit as the No. 4 seed.  In this scenario, we'd have our second consecutive year where Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff will square off against their former teams in the playoffs. Last postseason, Stafford made his return to Ford Field during Super Wild Card Weekend and was sent packing by his former Lions squad in a narrow 24-23 win. These two teams also met back in Week 1, and it required overtime for Detroit to get the win. If history tells us anything, these games are highly entertaining when the Lions and Rams square off. It would also be the latest chapter in what has been one of the more seismic trades of the decade.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2025-nfl-playoffs-ranking-top-five-potential-super-wild-card-weekend-matchups-including-bengals-vs-bills/

Week 18 Power Rankings

PFN (1. Detroit Lions - Record: 13-2.  Offense+ Rank: 2.  Defense+ Rank: 4.  Special Teams+ Rank: 13.  SOS Rank: 12.  The Vikings’ win over the Packers in Week 17 sets up a Week 18 battle between Detroit and Minnesota for the top seed in the conference and the NFC North title.  A loss to the Vikings in Week 18 would almost certainly drop the Lions to the No. 5 seed in the NFC after they have sat atop the standings all season.  PFN’s Playoff Predictor is a big fan of the Lions, ranking Detroit the second-best offense and fourth-best defense and giving them a 24.5% chance to win the Super Bowl — double the odds of the next-highest team. Detroit will try to improve to 14-2 by defeating the 49ers on Monday Night Football.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-power-rankings-week-18-insights-2024/

ESPN (2. Detroit Lions (14-2):  Biggest offseason contract situation to watch: Cornerback Carlton Davis III.  Since being traded from the Buccaneers, Davis has always been open to a contract extension in Detroit. He is currently in the final year of his contract and has been productive with 42 solo tackles, 11 passes defended, 2 interceptions and a forced fumble. Like many other Lions players, he was placed on the injured reserve list, with a jaw injury, in Week 15. However, Detroit will have to decide on his long-term future with the organization after already agreeing to massive extensions for Jared Goff, David Montgomery, Amon-Ra St. Brown and others. This won't be an easy decision. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/43225531/nfl-power-rankings-week-18-poll-2024-plus-biggest-offseason-contract-situation-watch

FTW (2. Detroit Lions - Last week’s rank: 2.  Detroit’s lack of defensive manpower is a problem, but a healthy Kerby Joseph remains a game changer. He’s up to nine interceptions on the year against a single touchdown allowed in coverage. The Lions may have to win each of their playoff games in a shootout, but there’s at least faith their injury-riddled defense can come up with a big turnover when it matters most. — CD):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-power-rankings-week-18-chiefs-vikings-bills

Fox News (2. Lions:  In a meaningless game, the Detroit Lions offense looked the best it's been all season long. Lions fans can only hope that their team will be all good for Sunday night’s NFC North title game, which will give them or the Vikings the No. 1 seed. But is anyone surprised Dan Campbell was aggressive on Monday? Last week: 2):  https://www.foxnews.com/sports/fox-news-digital-sports-nfl-power-rankings-after-week-17-2024-season

SN (3. Detroit Lions 13-2 (3):  The Lions' shorthanded defense overachieved in Chicago and will try to do so again in San Francisco. They need Jared Goff and the offense to be ready for a high-scoring finale with the Vikings next with the division title and the NFC's top seed on the line.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-power-rankings-packers-steelers-commanders-buccaneers/fcca3a31863ba590e5fe3359

Walter football (3. Detroit Lions (13-2) – Previously: 3.  Those injured players didn’t seem to be a factor with the Lions demolishing the Bears in cold weather. Then again, Detroit had a great matchup against a team that has an interim head coach and no offensive coordinator.):  https://walterfootball.com/nflpowerrankings.php

CBS (3. Lions:  They can score and score and score. With their defense, they have to score 40. But with their offense, they might just score that every game to get to and win a Super Bowl.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-18-power-rankings-chiefs-peaking-at-the-perfect-time-baker-mayfields-bucs-crack-the-top-10/

NFL.com (3. Detroit Lions:  Dan Campbell said the Lions would play it out Monday, and the beat-up, out-of-the-playoffs 49ers steamrolled through them for four TDs in five drives (with a missed field-goal try in between) to start the game. That’s a problem. This is who the Lions are defensively heading into Sunday night’s cage match against the Vikings. The stakes couldn't be clearer, with the division and the top seed in the NFC boiling down to that contest, and Minnesota is dangerous. The concern isn’t with Ben Johnson matching wits with Brian Flores; it’s with Aaron Glenn’s chewed-up defense finding solutions against Sam Darnold, Justin Jefferson and a Vikings offense that has maintained its edge while cutting back on turnovers. Detroit could certainly start by cutting back on pointless penalties. The two picks by Kerby Joseph that helped turn Monday's game into a win served as a reminder that turnovers fueled this defense earlier this season. Those are the kinds of plays the Lions need against Minnesota, even if they rack up another quarter-mile of offense.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-power-rankings-week-18-2024-nfl-season

USA Today (3. Detroit Lions (2): Despite all the injuries, they're on the verge of the first No. 1 playoff seed in team history. And regardless of the defensive health, this group is capable of beating anyone in a shootout – and most definitely so at Ford Field (though it's also incumbent to note that the Lions are the first team to go undefeated on the road in four years). Could this be the year they finally break through for their first Lombardi Trophy?):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/nate-davis/2024/12/31/nfl-power-rankings-week-18-bills-chiefs-lions-vikings/77341586007/

PFF (3. Lions:  The Detroit Lions’ Monday night victory against the San Francisco 49ers may not have had significant playoff implications, with everything hinging on their Week 18 matchup against the Vikings, but their effort on the field was a testament to the resilience and character of this team. Despite a banged-up defense, the Lions secured a 40-34 win in a competitive, hard-fought game.  Kerby Joseph continues to shine, with a stellar 90.7 grade that ranks first among safeties in the league, underscoring his critical role in the Lions' success this season. The team’s grit and determination remain on full display as they prepare for the decisive showdown.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-18-power-rankings

Fox sports Brooks (4. Lions:  At the season's start, Detroit's Monday night game against the Niners looked to be a battle for the NFC's No. 1 seed. While the Niners could not hold up their end of the bargain, the Lions are closing in on home-field advantage with an impressive campaign that has showcased their collective talent, versatility and resilience. With a victory setting up a winner-take-all contest in Week 18 against the Vikings, the Lions' ability to lock in and focus could determine whether they secure the coveted top seed next week.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-top-10-rankings-chiefs-vikings-bills-lions-eagles-ravens

The Athletic (Lions Power ranking: 4th.  Previous ranking: 2nd.  The Lions are wounded and the Vikings are hot, but Detroit has a chance to reset the narrative heading into the playoffs and secure the top seed in the NFC when it hosts Minnesota on Sunday night. If the Lions win, they won’t have to leave Ford Field until a possible Super Bowl trip. Their offense looked capable of it against the 49ers on Monday night, but the defense is going to have to hang on tight.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/power-rankings-lions-can-outscore-every-nfl-team

Fox sports (4. Lions:  The bad news is that the Lions’ defense is still coping with a ton of injuries, as evidenced by San Francisco piling up 475 yards and 34 points on them. That's problematic — both next week against Minnesota and in the playoffs. But the good news is, with an offense like theirs, it really might not matter. There can't be more than two or three teams in the NFL that can keep up with these guys.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-power-rankings

Yahoo (4. Lions:  The Lions might be able to outscore every team on the way to the franchise's first Super Bowl. But after a 40-34 win over the 49ers, it's clear that they'll have to put up a boatload of points and hope the defense makes a few big plays, like it did with two interceptions on Monday night.):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-power-rankings-entering-week-18-ravens-might-be-hot-super-bowl-pick-entering-playoffs-042046751.html

A large gambling syndacite thought this would occur, as it unloaded on the Lions first-half spread.  This was absolutely incorrect, with Detroit’s first-stringers playing the entire game. The Lions didn’t even play well in the opening half, as their defense couldn’t stop Brock Purdy. The San Francisco quarterback was 14-of-16 in the opening half, and he scored on every single possession, save for the final one prior to halftime when a long field goal was missed. The Lions also had an explosive offensive performance, though they stalled on one occasion in the red zone.  The 49ers entered the third quarter with a 21-13 lead, and it looked like it was going to be a long night for Detroit’s defense, especially when the 49ers scored on the opening offensive drive of the second half. This, however, was the final time the 49ers would score until garbage time. The Lions intercepted Purdy twice, including once deep in Detroit territory. The Lions’ offense, meanwhile, continued to thrive. When Jahmyr Gibbs broke free for a 30-yard touchdown, the Lions notched 40 points, making this an unusual NFL game in which there were 10 total touchdowns and zero punts.  The Lions are fortunate that they didn’t suffer any injuries in this game. Amon-Ra St. Brown seemed to get hurt on one occasion, but he turned out to be OK. Still, Detroit remained unscathed and perhaps built some confidence heading into next week’s big game.  Purdy suffered a wrist injury on the final drive of the game. He tried to throw on the sidelines, but gave up after two light tosses. Joshua Dobbs may start the season finale next week.):  https://walterfootball.com/nflreview.php

Week 17 Predictions

PFN Rolfe (Detroit Lions (-4) at San Francisco 49ers - The NFL schedule-makers probably felt they had laid a perfect Week 17 Monday Night Football game when they scheduled this one. Unfortunately, the San Francisco 49ers are a shell of their former selves and out of the playoff picture.  In theory, this should be a walkover for a Lions team that could have a chance to clinch the division and No. 1 seed with a win. The metrics are firmly in favor of Detroit, with an advantage in all three phases of the game.  The 49ers’ schedule has been slightly harder, but not to a point where it significantly alters the way we look at the massive gulf between the two teams in terms of the numbers.  Lions -4 feels a bit too good to be true, and I am going to take it with pleasure at this point. Usually, a line like this that feels too good to be true backfires, but all my numbers tell me that Detroit should win comfortably.  Prediction: Lions 27, 49ers 17):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/early-nfl-picks-predictions-week-17-2024/

SN Iyer (Lions (-3.5) at 49ers:  The Lions are more limping than leaping defensively, but their offense again has adjusted to carry a bigger burden of winning. This current state of the 49ers' offense and defense isn't enough to trust they can outscore them again, massive comeback or not, in a disappointing rematch of last season's NFC championship game.  Pick: Lions win 27-24 but fail to cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-against-spread-week-17-chiefs-ravens/21479632cb6b31496ff51ae6

SN Bender (Detroit Lions (-3.5) at San Francisco 49ers - The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention, so they will be relegated to spoiler mode in this NFC championship rematch. These are two top-10 statistical offenses, and the Lions have injuries on defense, so a shootout could be in the works. Jahmyr Gibbs had 154 total yards in his first game as the lead back for Detroit. He could pop off against a run defense that allows 121 yards per game. Pick: Lions 31, 49ers 24):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-17-commanders-vikings-packers/49ed8c4e6e44442a54e12551

USA Today (All 6 pick the Lions to win by scores of 34-26, 28-17, 37-27, 28-20, 35-24, 26-16):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl-picks/2024/12/24/nfl-week-17-picks-spread-predictions-locks-chiefs-steelers-christmas/77184408007/

CBS Sullivan (Lions at 49ers:  It's a shame that this is a dud of a matchup. At the start of the season, this was circled as possibly one of the top head-to-heads of the entire year and possibly an NFC Championship preview. However, the Niners have been run over by a reindeer and have been dealing with injuries wire-to-wire, which now has them mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Lions should have no problem getting up for this game as they need to win out to secure the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the conference, so we're expecting an all-out effort here. Detroit is a stellar 6-1 ATS on the road this season, which includes a 5-1 ATS record as a road favorite. Pair those trends with San Francisco's pedestrian 4-4 ATS record at home, and this should be pretty lopsided.   Projected score: Lions 30, 49ers 20):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-17-odds-picks-chargers-cover-as-road-favorites-vs-patriots-lions-thrash-49ers-in-prime-time/

Walter football (Week 17 NFL Pick: Lions 38, 49ers 27):  https://walterfootball.com/nflpicks2024_17late.php

Pro Pick (Detroit (13-2) at San Francisco (6-9) - Line: Lions minus 4.  The Lions aim to avenge their loss in the NFC championship game, though this matchup lost its luster because the 49ers are eliminated from the playoff race. Detroit clinches the NFC’s No. 1 seed with a win if the Packers beat the Vikings. If Minnesota beats Green Bay, the Lions have to beat the Vikings in Week 18 to win the division and secure the top seed so the result against San Francisco won’t matter. In that case, Dan Campbell could choose to rest some of his starters in preparation for a winner-take-all regular-season finale.  LIONS: 26-23):  https://apnews.com/article/mahomes-wilson-stroud-jackson-b3f9d9eb7dbf58622c16cf1caff5d765

CBS Dajani (I'll admit, I thought the Lions were going to stumble on the road against the Chicago Bears after the loss to the Bills, in which they lost multiple players due to injury. Instead, Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jameson Williams danced all over Chicago's defense. Six Week 1 starters from the Lions defense are currently on injured reserve. No team has ever been without that many Week 1 defensive starters in a playoff game. However, the Lions don't care. They are going to keep rolling.  This week, the Lions get a chance at some NFC Championship revenge against the lowly 49ers. San Francisco has already been eliminated from playoff contention, and is 0-2 in playoff rematches this season. Brock Purdy's offense hasn't scored more than 17 points in two straight weeks, and they are probably ready to turn their attention to 2025. The Lions are the only undefeated team on the road this season, and are an NFL-best 9-1 in prime-time games over the last three years. I'll lay the four points with Detroit. Projected score: Lions 30-23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-17-picks-odds-spread-best-bets-jayden-daniels-covers-vs-michael-penix-jr-bengals-win-again/

The San Francisco Standard (Lombardi: Lions 31, 49ers 27 - Detroit is an offensive juggernaut. But the Lions are leaking oil defensively and that is the greatest threat to their upcoming Super Bowl bid. Purdy and the 49ers, with their dilapidated O-line, will expose some of those cracks. But the 49ers don’t have enough in the tank to actually win the game.  Kawakami: Lions 31, 49ers 13 - Can this really be about Detroit getting some revenge for the NFC Championship Game loss if the Lions have all the motivation (to move closer to clinching the NFC’s No. 1 seed) and the 49ers have nothing to look forward to but the beginning of a long off-season? Well, maybe a little bit. This could get ugly swiftly.):  https://sfstandard.com/2024/12/28/49ers-vs-lions-the-standards-5-fast-predictions/

Lions vs 49ers: Last-minute thoughts and final score prediction (Final score prediction - What could have been an epic playoff preview, a high-stakes rematch of last year’s NFC title game, fizzled away with the Niners’ 6-9 start. Niners Wire Prediction and betting odds for 49ers vs. Lions in Week 17 (49ers vs. Lions prediction, pick:

The 49ers’ offensive line and running backs are incredibly banged up. That makes life difficult for San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy. While the Lions are dealing with their own rash of injuries, Jared Goff and Detroit deliver and exact revenge in a game where they have much more at stake.

PFF Grades and Data: Everything you need to know for every game this weekend (Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers:  Both of the Lions' top wideouts have posed significant challenges for defenses over the middle. Amon-Ra St. Brown leads the NFL with 580 receiving yards on in-breaking routes, while Jameson Williams ranks fourth with 513 yards. However, this is a strength of the 49ers' defense, which has allowed just 775 yards on in-breaking routes this season—the fifth-fewest in the league.  George Kittle has been nearly flawless in the red zone, hauling in 17 of 18 targets for 124 yards and eight touchdowns, tied for the third-most in the NFL. His 92.3 red zone receiving grade leads all pass-catchers. However, breaking through the Lions’ red zone defense will be a tough task. Detroit allows a league-best 46% completion rate and just 10 receiving touchdowns in the red zone, which is the second-fewest in the NFL.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-pff-grades-and-data-everything-you-need-to-know-for-every-game-this-weekend

NFL Week 17 Preview: Schedule, storylines and matchups to watch (Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers
Storyline of the Game: Lions’ Revenge Tour Faces a Pivotal Junction:  There’s poetic justice on the table for the Lions this week. Clinching the NFC North crown and the conference’s top seed on the same field where their Super Bowl dreams were shattered in the 2023 NFC Championship Game would be the ultimate redemption.  That scenario hinges on the outcome of the Vikings-Packers clash earlier in the day. A Vikings loss sets the stage for Detroit to solidify its revenge narrative with a win on the road, completing the most memorable chapter in their resurgence.  For the 49ers, that NFC Championship now feels like a distant memory. A slew of injuries has derailed their season, leaving them at 2-5 since their Week 9 bye and likely heading toward a top-12 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.  Matchups to Watch: Lions RT Penei Sewell vs. 49ers ED Nick Bosa - The Lions’ offense thrives on its ground game, with Penei Sewell anchoring the line as one of the league’s premier run blockers. Sewell has earned a 90.6 run-blocking grade, the second-highest among tackles this season, and continues to pave the way for Detroit’s dominant rushing attack.  The 49ers will counter with Nick Bosa, whose return has been critical to a defense struggling for consistency. Bosa’s 77.6 run-defense grade ranks in the top 10 among edge defenders, thanks to a 19.2% positively graded play rate against the run. This battle in the trenches could dictate the game’s outcome.  Additional News:  Detroit has waived LB David Long.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-17-preview-schedule-storylines-and-matchups-to-watch
