2019 NFL Season Win Totals: Bears due for some regression, Lions brutal schedule could spell doom (Detroit Lions (Win Total: 6.5 Over (-120) / Under (EV)) - Confession: I want to love the Lions. I really do. Matt Patricia looks like a smaller Dave Schools and is a rocket scientist. Those are two great reasons to root for someone! Matthew Stafford plus Kenny Golladay plus Marvin Jones plus Kerryon Johnson plus T.J. Hockenson? That's a fun group of offensive guys. Are they going to pound the ball, though? Is this a run heavy team in the mold of the Patriots? Is that actually function-able outside of New England and Dallas and a few other places in 2019? The front four is nasty if Trey Flowers is the pass rusher they paid for, but the secondary features a bunch of question marks. When Dave Richard and I went through this schedule, I completely turned on this team. I'm a little down on the division (see: above) but it's still a really tough group of teams to battle. What's the over-under for division wins for Detroit? 1.5? (And why am I asking so many questions?) If they don't win in Arizona in Week 1 they're staring 0-4 in the face heading into an early bye week. There just aren't many easy games out there for Detroit, outside of maybe Tampa Bay at home. Washington and Oakland are both road games, which is killer. Biggest question facing every team (Detroit Lions - Is the pass rush improved enough? The Lions signed Trey Flowers as a big-ticket free agent to amp up their pass rush. He had 7.5 sacks last season for the Patriots and will be an upgrade from the departed Ziggy Ansah, who had health issues the past few seasons. The Lions can also expect to see defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand take a big leap forward in 2019. He was good as a rookie, but he could be special as a second-year player. Third-year player Romeo Okwara led the team in sacks with 7.5. Five 2018 picks ready to be stars (Frank Ragnow, C, Lions - Ragnow was my OC1 and No. 33 overall prospect in the 2018 class. I compared him to Travis Frederick, a large, powerful center who wins the leverage/angle battle frequently and, when healthy, is an elite, top 3 center in football. At Arkansas, Ragnow routinely won in the same way. First with gargantuan strength at the point of attack to anchor against bull rushes or to move wide-bodied defensive tackles in the run game. Impressively, his film also demonstrated impeccable angles and leverage wins in the trenches and when he needed to climb to the second level on combo blocks in the SEC. Lastly, his grip strength was superb. Counter moves rarely fazed him. However, Ragnow was much more effective at center as a junior and senior than he was at right guard as a sophomore, although he famously never allowed a sack in his entire career with the Razorbacks. He wasn't brutal as a rookie with the Lions but didn't play to his full potential. To me, a big reason why was due to his position, left guard. Graham Glasgow, who played center on 99.9% of Detroit's offensive snaps last year and did so decently, is speculated to move to right guard this upcoming season to replaced the retired T.J. Lang. Good news for Ragnow, going back to his most comfortable position. It’s very interesting taking a step back and looking at Quinn’s four drafts at the helm of the Lions. He has played things relatively safely in Round 1, which likely comes from his New England influence, as does his penchant for drafting SEC players and Senior Bowl participants. Typically, his Round 1 choices fill a clear, immediate need, and his picks thereafter have been more of the swing-for-the-fences variety. There have been a few missteps in that middle-round range, such as Teez Tabor and Michael Roberts. But there also have been gems, such as Golladay and D’Shawn Hand. In fact, you could argue that Golladay was a pick that went against the Patriots-ish grain. New England had a hell of a time trying to find receivers in that Round 2-4 range when Quinn was in New England. You might understand if Quinn had feared Golladay might become the next Aaron Dobson, but he hasn’t. The fatal flaw for all 32 teams (Detroit Lions - Fatal Flaw: The division. Talked with Pete Prisco about this team on the latest edition of the Pick Six Podcast, and there's actually a lot to like about the Lions in 2019. They have a couple of guys on his breakout players list, including running back Kerryon Johnson, who could thrive in a run game that now features T.J. Hockeson and Jesse James. Matthew Stafford won't be asked to throw 900 times this year, but he can certainly develop into a more efficient quarterback. Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones are a nice one-two punch. Defensively there's more to like than meets the eye. The front four features D'Shawn Hand, Damon Harrison and Trey Flowers as key pieces. Jarrad Davis should continue developing at linebacker.
