PFF Rankings: The highest-graded offensive linemen through Week 3 of the 2019 NFL preseason (3. T RICK WAGNER, DETROIT LIONS — 81.6
Its a tie for third between teammates. Lions right tackle Rick Wagner has earned a 72.0 pass-blocking grade, having kept a clean slate from his 30 pass-blocking snaps. As good as he’s been in pass protection, he’s truly shined in the running game: His 85.0 run-blocking grade ranks third among qualifying tackles this preseason, and his 23.8 impact run-block percentage ranks fourth.  3. T TAYLOR DECKER,  DETROIT LIONS — 81.6.  Wagner’s left-sided counterpart has been excellent in pass protection this preseason. He’s allowed zero pressures from 30 pass-blocking snaps, and his 85.2 pass-blocking grade ranks second among offensive tackles this preseason.  8. T KENNY WIGGINS, DETROIT LIONS — 77.8.  Another Lions tackle makes the cut. Wiggins has played 77 snaps so far this preseason, and he has been particularly impressive in pass protection: He’s not allowed a single sack, hit or hurry on 44 pass-blocking snaps, and he’s only “lost” one pass-blocking assignment.):  https://www.pff.com/news/pro-pff-rankings-the-highest-graded-offensive-linemen-through-week-3-of-the-2019-nfl-preseason

NFL QB Rankings 2019: Where Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady fall in 2019 (13. Stafford:  I’ve been hard on Matthew Stafford over the last few years, but the slander may have gone too far. Stafford makes too much money. He never beats winning teams. The Lions are always mediocre. All of those things are true, but that doesn’t mean Stafford isn’t a good quarterback. He’s one of the better pre-snap quarterbacks in the league, he still possesses a special arm and his mechanics in the pocket have improved over the last few seasons, leading to more consistent accuracy. A post-2019 break-up would probably be best for both Stafford and the Lions, though.):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/08/nfl-quarterback-rankings-2019-tom-brady-patrick-mahomes

Where all 32 NFL teams need to improve in 2019 (Detroit Lions: Pressure off the edge (Key Number: 10.3% edge pressure rate (31st in the NFL)):  The Lions had several defenders grade very well along the interior of their defensive line last season — Damon Harrison, A’Shawn Robinson and Da’Shawn Hand — but all three of those players lined up primarily inside and were more accomplished run-defenders than pass-rushers. When it came to getting pressure off the edge, only the Oakland Raiders had a lower edge pressure rate than the Lions (10.3%). The Lions went out and added to a stacked defensive line this offseason by signing Trey Flowers and his 18.5% pass-rush win rate from New England last season. He should help in their effort to bring more heat off the edge.):  https://www.pff.com/news/pro-where-every-afc-team-needs-to-improve-in-the-2019-nfl-season

PFF 2019 NFL Preseason Week 4 Preview: Players to watch in all 16 games (DETROIT LIONS @ CLEVELAND BROWNS - Lions’ Amani Oruwariye, a rookie fifth-round pick out of Penn State, has struggled in a big way this preseason. He’s earned just a 41.1 overall grade and a 36.2 coverage grade across his 117 defensive snaps. It’s highly unlikely he misses the cut when the axe comes swinging, but he still needs to turn his play around to warrant any level of playing time in the regular season. Second-year interior offensive lineman Austin Corbett is playing for a backup spot along the Browns’ offensive line in 2019, and he’s barely done enough to earn that. The 2018 second-rounder has earned just a 50.4 overall grade, a 29.5 pass-blocking grade and a 58.5 run-blocking grade in 130 offensive snaps this preseason. The move to center hasn’t been a lucrative move for Corbett thus far.):  https://www.pff.com/news/pro-pff-2019-nfl-preseason-week-4-preview-players-to-watch-in-all-16-games

NFL futures, win totals picks (Many projection systems really like the Lions this year, from the SportsLine Projection Model to Football Outsiders' DVOA and more. And I can see it -- the defensive line is stacked and the secondary features one of the league's best corners in Darius Slay, while the offense should be tougher to defend now that it shouldn't be as predictable. There's a worst-to-first division winner every year, and while the Jaguars are obviously the most logical candidate with the Luck retirement, I'd put the Lions second.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-futures-best-bets-on-win-totals-super-bowl-divisional-champs-mvp-and-more-on-2019-nfl-season/

Grading all 32 first-round picks after preseason Week 3 (PICK NO. 8: TE T.J. HOCKENSON, DETROIT LIONS (2019 preseason grade: 67.1):  The Lions’ new tight end has had an up-and-down preseason so far, earning overall grades 64.3, 76.7 and 59.4 in his first three games as a pro. And while he was held targetless in his NFL debut in Week 1, Hockenson has hauled in 4-of-5 targets for 52 yards and two first downs over his last two weeks, though he did drop a pass against the Bills in Week 3. With the countdown to the regular season winding down, the Lions’ faithful have to be happy with what they’ve seen from Hockenson after the catch — he currently leads all tight ends in receiving yards after the catch (39) and yards after the catch per reception (9.8).):  https://www.pff.com/news/pro-z-grading-all-32-first-round-picks-after-preseason-week-3

Power rankings for NFL divisions (1. NFC North:  When Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback of the third-best team in your division, you know you have a strong division, and that's exactly what the NFC North had in 2018.  Although Rodgers is the best quarterback in the division, the Packers aren't really the best at anything else, which is a big reason why the NFC North is so balanced. The Bears have the best defense, the Vikings have the best receiving corps and the Lions, well, they're the best at not winning the division.   Speaking of winning the division, the Bears did that with a strong defense last year and Lions coach Matt Patricia seems to be well aware of that, because he spent the most of the offseason upgrading the defense in Detroit. Thanks to the addition of Trey Flowers, the Lions now have a defensive front that includes Flowers, Mike Daniels and Damon "Snacks" Harrison.  New Packers coach Matt LaFleur must have also noticed how the Bears won the division, because he also beefed up his defense this offseason by adding multiple players, including OLB Za'Darius Smith, OLB Preston Smith, S Adrian Amos.   What this all means is that you shouldn't be surprised if the final score of every NFC North game this year is 13-10. You also shouldn't be surprised if the NFC North ends up being the best division in the NFL this year.   NFC North out-of-division record in 2018: 21-19 (8-8 vs. NFC West, 9-7 vs. AFC East, 1-3 vs. NFC East, 3-1 vs. NFC South) 2019 out-of-division schedule: vs. NFC East and AFC West):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2019-nfl-divisional-power-rankings-afc-east-ranks-last-even-with-defending-super-bowl-champion-patriots/

PFF's NFL Team of the Week: 2019 NFL Preseason Week 3 (LT TAYLOR DECKER, DETROIT LIONS (86.3 Overall Grade, 32 Offensive Snaps): Decker was impressive in pass protection this week, with zero sacks, hits or hurries allowed from 20 pass-blocking snaps giving him a 100.0 pass-blocking efficiency rating for the week. He was just as impressive as a run blocker, with his 87.6 PFF run-blocking grade ranking third among offensive tackles who were on the field for at least 10 run-blocking snaps.  K MATT PRATER, DETROIT LIONS (90.9 Overall Grade):  Does this need anymore of an explanation other than to state that he boomed a 61-yard field goal as time expired in the first half?):  https://www.pff.com/news/pro-pffs-nfl-team-of-the-week-2019-nfl-preseason-week-3

(Trending Down - Detroit Lions' Week 1 defense: Starting inside linebacker Jarrad Davis suffered a high ankle sprain in Detroit's third preseason game, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Week 3 rookie grades: Giants QB Jones leads pack (BILLS vs. LIONS: Lions TE T.J. Hockenson - Drafted: Round 1, No. 8 overall (GRADE: A):  The big-bodied pass catcher is making a strong case to become the new No. 1 option in the Lions' passing game. Hockenson displayed strong hands and powerful running skills while snagging three passes for 52 yards on four targets against Buffalo. The former Iowa standout was viewed by some as a Rob Gronkowski-like playmaker leading up to the draft and his impressive display of blocking and receiving skills should help the Lions transition into the blue-collar offensive approach preferred by head coach Matt Patricia.):  http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001044463/article/preseason-grades-week-3-daniel-jones-rolls-kyler-murray-solid

Week 3 preseason takeaways: Browns might have the defensive muscle to match their offense (Matthew Stafford looked sharp in what probably will be his lone appearance this preseason (12-19-0-137, 1 TD), but any relief over how he played is overshadowed by what the Lions might have lost. Middle linebacker Jarrad Davis was carted off the field with what appeared to be a right foot/ankle injury and will have an MRI on Saturday, according to a source. Center Frank Ragnow appeared to injure his right knee and went straight to the locker room. The pair of former first-round picks were the anchors of the team's linebacking corps and offensive line -- two of the shakier groups Detroit has. If either one misses significant time, it could cause problems for the entire unit because of their individual roles. Detroit will have to adjust -- and fast -- if either injury ends up being one that keep the players out to start the regular season. -- Michael Rothstein):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27438687/nfl-preseason-week-3-takeaways-browns-defensive-muscle-match-their-offense

PFF ReFocused, NFL Preseason Week 3: Buffalo Bills 24, Detroit Lions 20:  https://www.pff.com/news/pro-pff-refocused-nfl-preseason-week-3-buffalo-bills-24-detroit-lions-20

What we learned from Friday's preseason games (Lions-Bills:  4. Matthew Stafford saw his first action of the preseason Thursday evening, leading five drives and playing into the second quarter. The Lions signal-caller looked most comfortable when targeting his newest additions: Jesse James, T.J. Hockenson, Danny Amendola and Ty Johnson. Stafford took joy in testing the offseason acquisitions, completing eight passes to the quartet, including three to Hockenson. The first-round tight end's highly touted summer continued Thursday night, as he found openings in Buffalo's defense to rumble for 52 receiving yards and extend Detroit's lone touchdown drive. A breakout back this summer, Johnson was the recipient of Stafford's TD pass, a smooth 11-yard shot out of the backfield. The QB's chemistry with the Detroit newcomers should calm concerns (for an evening) that the Lions are bound for a setback in Matt Patricia's second season in charge. Lookin' at you, Baldy!  5. Continuing the trend started on Thursday night, this contest was marred by injuries. Whereas Hockenson thrived and left Ford Field with a clean bill of health, Detroit's first-round picks from the two years prior fell victim to the contagious injury bug. Lions starting linebacker Jarrad Davis left with an ankle injury on his first drive and is bound for the MRI machine. Detroit's first-string center, Frank Ragnow, suffered the same fate in the second frame. Buffalo didn't emerge unscathed either. Bills guard Quinton Spain hit the showers early with an ankle injury and star cornerback Tre'Davious White was ruled out with a quad contusion. Even Frank Gore went down briefly following a late hit out of bounds by Lions safety Tracy Walker, though the everlasting tailback returned to the game shortly after. When we said "break a leg" before the preseason Week 3 dress rehearsal, we didn't mean literally, guys...  6. One week after building a mind-meld with Cole Beasley, Josh Allen didn't get into quite the same rhythm in Detroit. In six drives, the second-year gunslinger showcased his best and worst tendencies, completing just three passes on six attempts for 49 yards. One first-quarter play Thursday night was a pure distillation of the J. Allen Experience. On a second-and-short from Buffalo's 25, Allen escaped pressure out to his right, moving with confidence in and out of the pocket per usual. But the QB then inexplicably threw back across his body into the middle of the field when Jalen Reeves-Maybin was waiting. A pick right out of his rookie tape...that is if he wasn't bailed out by a questionable roughing the passer call. The drive resulted in an Isaiah McKenzie jet sweep TD, so all was forgiven in the end, but Allen's sloppy play is indicative of a young QB who is still experiencing growing pains.  -- Jeremy Bergman):  http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001043881/article/what-we-learned-from-fridays-preseason-games

BILLS AT LIONS:   https://detroit.cbslocal.com/2019/08/23/bills-at-lions/

Six young players who need a role change (Frank Ragnow, C, Lions (Pre-draft position rank: No. 1 center.  Tweak needed: Position, from guard to center.  Change coming? Yes.):  Ragnow was my No. 1 center in the 2018 class because of the effortless power he showcased while playing the position and the steady movements he displayed in the run game. His brute strength was the anchor of his pass-protecting prowess, and he routinely put defenders on their backs.   Playing in Arkansas' power-based offense, Ragnow wasn't asked to move laterally often -- most climbs to the second level were short and jagged. The Lions picked him at No. 20 overall, but he played guard as a rookie thanks to the presence of 2016 third-rounder Graham Glasgow.  In a new role from where he dominated in the SEC, Ragnow labored through some rookie growing pains. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed 36 pressures on 1,074 snaps as a rookie, which equates to a less than ideal pressure rate. His rookie-season grade of 61.9 is considered below average.  But Ragnow and Glasgow flipped positions this offseason and through the summer. While it may take some time to acclimate to the speed and power of inside rushers in his second season, Ragnow should settle nicely into his comfy spot at the pivot for Matthew Stafford, Kerryon Johnson and Co. in 2019.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-2019-six-young-players-who-are-in-need-of-a-position-scheme-or-role-tweak/

32 Notes From 32 NFL Training Camps (Lions (July 30):  One thing I think you’ll see in Detroit this year that may not have been noticeable in Year 1: Matt Patricia’s expertise of the details. One example would be in how the offensive line will be coached a certain way, specific to how the shorter-but-not-height-deficient Matthew Stafford plays. Another is in the bigger, longer targets Stafford prefers, guys like T.J. Hockenson, Jessie James and Kenny Golladay, being deployed.  And then there’s how Patricia himself will be able to direct the coaches more than he did last year, when he was focused in getting the program off the ground floor.  “I think the biggest part for me last year, you’re trying to do everything within the organization to make change, get it right, make it Tier 1 level,” Patricia told me. “This year was really good for me to be able to go back and coach the coaches, like, ‘hey this is what we have to expect, this is what we have to do.’ We’re asking our players to do this, we have to be able to do this.’  “Those expectations and those differences, I think with the coaching staff changes that we made, you evaluate the first year, this has to get better, or this was good, whatever it is, I’m spending more time doing that. Which, ultimately, in the end, should help.”  In the end, the real hallmark of Belichick’s program in New England is in complementary football—how the pieces fit together. And ultimately, that’s what Patricia is looking for in coaching his coaches.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/08/22/nfl-training-camp-2019-news-notes-32-teams

NFL coaches' hot-seat tiers: From safe forever to impending doom (Red Hot - Matt Patricia, Lions:  Patricia’s first season was pretty much a disaster and his coaching style didn’t sit well with some of his players. The Lions went out and spent big money in free agency this offseason. Patricia needs a dramatic turnaround or else he won’t get a third season.):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2019/08/21/nfl-coaches-hot-seat-tiers-from-safe-forever-to-impending-doom/27/
