Bad enough to make everyone forget about the 2008 winless Lions.  The first lone winless season in the NFL’s modern era helped the Lions finally find their quarterback of he future in Matthew Stafford who, in turn, made them relevant again. It’s also worth noting that Detroit was close to winning several times in October of that fateful year. They were leading the Vikings 10-9 in Week 5 before Ryan Longwell’s last-second, 26-yard field goal. They nearly rallied back from a 21-3 halftime deficit against Houston the week after. Dan Orlovsky brought the Lions within five points with six minutes left at the Redskins before they kicked a field goal to ice the win, and Rex Grossman’s one-yard touchdown run put Chicago ahead over Detroit with just over five minutes left in Week 9.  In the regular season finale, Detroit came within three points of the Packers, 24-21 midway through the fourth quarter before Aaron Rodgers hit Donald Driver for a 71-yard touchdown pass, handing the Lions the big goose egg for the season.  The Browns had it worse. They didn’t just go 0-16 in 2017, but also started the season 0-2-1 before defeating the Jets on Thursday Night Football for their first win in nearly two years. Their 19-game winless streak matched the Lions who went 0-19 between the 2007-09 seasons. NFL draft: How much each team has invested in quarterbacks the past decade (31. Detroit Lions (QBs drafted since 2010: 2.  Day 1 picks: None.  Day 2: None.  Day 3: Jake Rudock (191st, 2016); Brad Kaaya (215th, 2017). Chase Stuart draft capital invested: 1.9) - Skinny: The Lions took Stafford first overall in 2009 and basically have let it ride since then. After a few major injuries his first two seasons, Stafford has started all 16 games for eight straight seasons — a wild run of durability, especially when you hear about his reported broken back last season.  As we wrote the other day, we wonder how his tenure in Detroit ends. He’s largely been very good, or very solid at the very least. But with Matt Patricia in charge now — and perhaps feeling some heat in Year 2 — there’s no guarantee that Stafford will be a Lion for life. The team did some hard work on quarterbacks in this past draft cycle but ultimately passed on taking one or bringing in an undrafted free agent. To back up Stafford this year, they signed vets Tom Savage and David Fales, two former Day 3 picks of yore. Both Rudock and Kaaya are gone already.  So it would not at all be surprising to see Detroit reenter the QB draft mix in 2020, as Stafford’s dead money drops from $26 million during the 2020 season to $10 million in 2021. Rating the offseason for all 32 NFL teams: Why the Browns are on top (Above Average - Detroit Lions. Offseason goals: The Lions needed to upgrade the offense and also add a pass rush after a season when the Lions lacked an elite pass-rusher, with Ezekiel Ansah consistently injured, and got nothing out of the tight end position. Those were the immediate goals after a first season that went awry for Matt Patricia, with a 6-10 record on the field and multiple gaffes off of it. On paper at least -- which means little once the season gets here -- Detroit handled these things. The Lions revamped the tight end position and signed Trey Flowers to bolster the defensive line. Patricia also has seemed more comfortable during his podium sessions, which is his conduit to speaking with the team's fan base, than he did at any point last year.   Biggest question still to be answered: Who is playing cornerback opposite Darius Slay? Slay stayed away throughout the offseason, giving Detroit ample time to look at Rashaan Melvin and Teez Tabor as possible outside corner options. Melvin has been largely quiet, which isn't terrible for a corner, while Tabor has had some standout plays and also some struggles in a critical offseason for the former second-round pick. Five players who should get paid (NICKEL CORNERS: Compensation finally matching production?  If you haven't noticed, the NFL is turning into a league full of specialists, and decision makers are beginning to pay top dollar for elite role players. The slot corner or nickel corner, in particular, is viewed as the 12th defensive starter on most teams, and recent signings of Justin Coleman (Detroit Lions) and Kenny Moore (Indianapolis Colts) only confirms the emerging trend in war rooms.  Coleman, a fifth-year pro with 19 passes defensed and two pick-sixes over the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, signed a four-year, $36 million deal with the Lions to handle nickel duties for Matt Patricia's squad. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound cover corner displays an exceptional combination of instincts, awareness and ball skills roaming between the numbers. He is comfortable shadowing slot receivers with cat-like quickness while also showing enough courage and toughness to mix it up against the run.  "Playing nickel corner takes special skills," a former NFL defensive coordinator recently told me. "You need the quickness and agility to handle shifty slot receivers while working through all kinds of traffic over the middle of the field. You also need to be tough enough to handle the run support duties when teams attempt to run the ball against a light box. ... Some scouts view it as a 'throwaway' position or a stash spot for little guys, but most defensive coaches will tell you the nickel corner should be the most complete defensive back on the team."  The Lions' new CB3 was pegged as an ideal nickel corner as a collegian at Tennessee following a solid career and a handful of spectacular performances in pre-draft workouts (4.53-second 40-yard dash, 3.98-second 20-yard shuttle drill, 37.5-inch vertical jump, and 10-foot-4-inch broad jump) that highlighted his natural traits for the position. Coleman excelled in a sub-package role for two different teams, which is a testament to his versatility and adaptability as a defender.  Moore, a former undrafted free agent from Valdosta State, has emerged as a key defender for the Colts as their nickel corner. No. 23 has not only started 20 games over the past two seasons but has picked off four passes with 16 passes defensed during that span. As an explosive athlete with A-plus quickness, movement skills and agility, Moore excels at maintaining hip pocket positioning on receivers, particularly on option routes and crossers between the numbers.  While this certainly comes as a surprise based on his entrance into the league as an undrafted player who failed to make the New England Patriots' roster, he certainly flashed intriguing traits during a pro day workout at Valdosta State, where he reportedly clocked a 4.47 40 time with a 6.86-second three-cone drill, 40.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-7-inch broad jump.  Considering how Coleman and Moore have ascended to the top of the position as twitchy athletes with outstanding instincts and ball skills, scouts will begin to check off specific boxes when looking at nickel corner prospects down the road. Slot defenders must display outstanding lateral quickness and movement skills in coverage while also flashing a knack for getting their hands on the ball. Additionally, the premier nickel corners will also display solid tackling skills and run support ability as edge players.  "It's all about putting guys in the right roles," said the former defensive coordinator. The NFL minicamp absences that actually matter, and what's next (Damon Harrison, DT; Darius Slay, CB, Detroit Lions:  I'm grouping these two together because they're on the same team, but these are slightly different situations.  Harrison has two years left on the contract the Giants gave him in 2016. His starry-eyed romance with erstwhile offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter burned out last year, as the Lions finished toward the back of the pack with 20.5 points per game (Cooter was shown the door in January). More disconcerting was how the team got away from the advantage created by Stafford's incredible right arm. According to Next Gen Stats, Stafford averaged 7.0 yards through the air on attempts last season, which put him second-to-last in football among qualifying passers. Thankfully, new OC Darrell Bevell wants to open up the offense.
