One stat to know for all 32 NFL teams before the 2023 season (DETROIT LIONS - The Lions spent a ton of resources in last year’s draft to build up their defense. Starting with Aidan Hutchinson, the goal was to create a formidable pass rush. Hutchinson, with the help of a few others, had a nearly unprecedented rookie season.  The 2022 Lions got 19.5 sacks from their rookie class, the most of any team since at least 2006. They also collected 96 total pressures, which ranks second behind the 2021 Cowboys — Micah Parsons’ rookie season. The primary contributors were Hutchinson, Josh Paschal and James Houston, who led all rookies in pass-rush grade. NFL All Under 25 Defensive Team for 2023 season (EDGE: Aidan Hutchinson (Lions):  There are a few players we could probably slot in here, but I'm going to bet on the upside of the former No. 2 overall pick. Hutchinson recorded 52 combined tackles, 15 QB hits, 9.5 sacks and three interceptions last year, which earned the defensive end 2022 Pepsi Zero Sugar NFL Rookie of the Year honors. No other rookie in NFL history had ever recorded nine sacks and three interceptions before. Well, at least since 1982, when individual sacks became an official statistic. DL: Alim McNeill (Lions):  We have a ton of flexibility with the younger defensive tackles, which gives us the ability to spotlight an underrated talent in the NFL. Head coach Dan Campbell calls McNeill "the dancing bear," which I think is pretty accurate. He's listed at 6-foot-2, 315 pounds, (slimmer than he used to be) but can get after the quarterback from the inside. McNeill recorded just one sack in 2022, but registered 10 pressures in Week 11 against the New York Giants. PFF claims that broke a record for most single-game pressures by a defender over 320 pounds since they started tracking such things. McNeill has played every game in his two NFL seasons, recording 80 combined tackles, 10 QB hits and three sacks so far. Ranking NFL divisions by RBs: AFC South rules (7. NFC North - Aaron Jones (Packers), Khalil Herbert (Bears), Alexander Mattison (Vikings), David Montgomery (Lions).  In arguably Aaron Rodgers' worst season as a Green Bay Packer (he totaled a career-low 91.1 passer rating as the Packers starting quarterback in 2022), the other Aaron, running back Aaron Jones, picked up the slack. He amassed a career-high 1,121 rushing yards last season while averaging 5.3 yards per carry, the second-most in the entire NFL among running backs. That high-level efficiency is business as usual for Jones since 2022 marked the fourth time in six career seasons that he's averaged more than 5 yards a rush. He also played a larger role in the passing game than he had in Rodgers' recent MVP seasons (2020 and 2021), hauling in a career-high 59 catches for 395 receiving yards, the ninth-most in the league at his position. Jones' career 5.1 yards per carry ranks as tied for the fourth-most in the Super Bowl Era by a running back, and alongside a new, young quarterback in Jordan Love, his workload could be the largest of his entire career. Khalil Herbert didn't have a jaw-dropping amount of volume in 2022, but he made the most of his timeshare in the Bears backfield by leading all running backs in yards per carry last season (5.7). He could have a big year with Montgomery's departure to Detroit. 2023 NFL Preseason All-Rookie Team: Top picks headline (Running back - Second team: Jahmyr Gibbs, Lions. Gibbs will be the RB1 in Detroit by November and has some of the most effortless acceleration and long speed I've ever witnessed in a running back prospect. The pass-happy ways of Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the presence of lateral-juking stud David Montgomery will eat into Gibbs' opportunities as a rookie. Tight end - First team: Sam LaPorta, Lions. The T.J. Hockenson trade came when the Lions were 1-6, and, ironically, they could've used him down the stretch during an 8-2 heater to end the season. Now the ferocious LaPorta steps into a TE1 role in what was a dynamic aerial-driven attack in 2022 -- only the Chiefs and Bills had a higher Expected Points Added total on dropbacks! LaPorta has an NFL frame, a thick lower half that makes him a moose in the open field, and he's an explosive athlete, so he'll be able to get open underneath and at the intermediate level. Kincaid is an older prospect, but he was the most electric route runner in a loaded tight end class and has incredible, super-steady hands in any scenario -- arms extended, in traffic, or when absorbing contact from a defensive back, doesn't matter.  Linebackers - First team: Jack Campbell, Lions and Daiyan Henley, Chargers.  Campbell and Henley were my top two linebackers in the class, and they landed in tremendous locales. The only gripe I had with Campbell -- and I mean, the only gripe -- was his shorter arms. Otherwise, he ticked every box for me on film. Range, blocking-shedding, and coverage mastery. I love what Detroit has along the defensive line in front of him too. Monster first season ahead for him with the Lions.  Safeties - First team: Ja'Ayir Brown, 49ers and Brian Branch, Lions.  I know there's Tracy Walker and 2022 rookie stud Kerby Joseph in Detroit's safety room. The Lions did not pick Branch -- such a pro-ready prospect -- in Round 2 for him to stand on the sidelines in 2023. He's the best tackling defensive back I've ever scouted and has tremendous instincts and ball skills in coverage. He was seen as a franchise left tackle in the 2021 NFL Draft, but enters 2023 as a Pro Bowl right tackle. Longest NFL playoff droughts, ranking chances they end (2. Detroit Lions (six-year drought) - Last playoff appearance: 2016.  The Lions were just a Seattle Seahawks loss away in Week 18 last season from being off this list, yet the playoff drought appears set to end in 2023. Dan Campbell has this franchise heading in the right direction, as the Lions won seven of their last nine games to finish with their first winning record (9-8) since 2017.  The NFC North is up for grabs with Aaron Rodgers getting traded to the New York Jets, the Chicago Bears still in a rebuild with Justin Fields and the Minnesota Vikings could go in either direction. 2023 NFL season: Biggest challenge for each team (Detroit Lions - Biggest challenge: Developing chemistry in the secondary.  And this was a challenge before do-it-all DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted off the practice field on Monday with a non-contact knee injury. Detroit's pass defense hasn't been up to snuff the past two seasons, as the Lions have been competitive but have found themselves in too many shootouts. This offseason, the team committed significant resources to the secondary, adding CBs Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley and Gardner-Johnson in free agency, before pouncing on versatile DB Brian Branch in Round 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Along with holdover safeties Tracy Walker and Kerby Joseph, the Lions have the makings of a much-improved group in the back end. A significant injury to the uniquely talented CJGJ would be a real blow, though NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported that there is optimism following the initial scare. Regardless, DC Aaron Glenn must find the best ways to utilize everyone. A better pass rush also could aid this unit. The Lions open with the Chiefs in Week 1, which will throw the secondary right into the fire, although the schedule softens a bit after that. Biggest '23 NFL training camp battles not involving QBs (Detroit Lions: Jack Campbell):  Lions second-year linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez came out of nowhere last training camp as the 2022 sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State soared up the depth chart to earn a spot in the starting lineup. Unfortunately for Rodrigo, as head coach Dan Campbell affectionately named him on HBO's "Hard Knocks," the Lions then had a horrific year defensively, allowing 392.4 total yards-per-game, the most in the NFL. Lions defense in 2022 season - The disappointing performance across the entire unit led general manager Brad Holmes to overhaul the secondary through free agency -- signing cornerbacks Cameron Sutton (three years, $33 million), Emmanuel Moseley (one year, $6 million) and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (one-year, $6.5 million, co-led NFL with six interceptions) -- and selecting the 2023 NFL Draft's top safety, Alabama's Brian Branch, in the second round (45th overall). He also selected Iowa inside linebacker Jack Campbell 18th overall with the Lions' second first-round selection, putting Rodriguez's job in danger. Campbell won the 2022 Butkus Award as the top linebacker in college football. His 92.9 PFF coverage grade was the best among linebackers in the FBS last season. 2023 Preseason All-Rookie Team (Running back - Second team: Jahmyr Gibbs, Lions):  Gibbs will be the RB1 in Detroit by November and has some of the most effortless acceleration and long speed I've ever witnessed in a running back prospect. The pass-happy ways of Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the presence of lateral-juking stud David Montgomery will eat into Gibbs' opportunities as a rookie. Tight end - First team: Sam LaPorta, Lions. The T.J. Hockenson trade came when the Lions were 1-6, and, ironically, they could've used him down the stretch during an 8-2 heater to end the season. Now the ferocious LaPorta steps into a TE1 role in what was a dynamic aerial-driven attack in 2022 -- only the Chiefs and Bills had a higher Expected Points Added total on dropbacks! LaPorta has an NFL frame, a thick lower half that makes him a moose in the open field, and he's an explosive athlete, so he'll be able to get open underneath and at the intermediate level.  Linebackers
First team: Jack Campbell, Lions and Daiyan Henley, Chargers - Campbell and Henley were my top two linebackers in the class, and they landed in tremendous locales. The only gripe I had with Campbell -- and I mean, the only gripe -- was his shorter arms. Otherwise, he ticked every box for me on film. Range, blocking-shedding, and coverage mastery. I love what Detroit has along the defensive line in front of him too. Monster first season ahead for him with the Lions.  Safeties
First team: Ja'Ayir Brown, 49ers and Brian Branch, Lions - I know there's Tracy Walker and 2022 rookie stud Kerby Joseph in Detroit's safety room. The Lions did not pick Branch -- such a pro-ready prospect -- in Round 2 for him to stand on the sidelines in 2023. He's the best tackling defensive back I've ever scouted and has tremendous instincts and ball skills in coverage.
