2023 NFL All-Under-25 Team: Sauce Gardner, Justin Jefferson among top young stars (EDGE - Aidan Hutchinson:  Hutchinson led all rookies with 9.5 sacks last season. In a typical year, that production probably would earn him Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, but he happened to be part of the same draft class as Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner, who won the award. Hutchinson’s three interceptions further underscore how much of an impact he can have on a game. 2023 NFL Offseason Rankings, Part I: Ravens reload (29. Detroit Lions:  The Detroit Lions are as low as they are in these rankings because they repeatedly spent resources on lesser value players instead of investing in more valuable positions of need. Detroit used its 12th and 18th overall draft picks on Alabama running back Jaymyr Gibbs, the second-best running back prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft, and Iowa inside linebacker Jack Campbell while failing to find Aidan Hutchinson another pass-rushing difference-maker on the other side of their defensive line. Those picks look even more wild when they opted to spend at running back and inside linebacker in free agency prior to the draft, signing former Chicago Bear David Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract and re-signing inside linebacker Alex Anzalone to a three-year, $18.8 million deal.  Sure, they used their two second-round selections on Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta (34th) and Alabama safety Brian Branch (45th overall), both solid prospects, but those are four players at some of the least valuable positions in the NFL. At least general manager Brad Holmes fixed their most glaring weakness, one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL (274.8 passing yards allowed per game, 30th in the NFL). Signing former Pittsburgh Steelers 28-year-old cornerback to a three-year, $33 million deal is a steal given his 54.6 passer rating allowed in coverage was the fifth best in the NFL last season among 50 players with at least 75 targets against them. Picking up safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, whose six interceptions with the Philadelphia Eagles last season were tied for the most in the NFL, on a one-year, prove-it deal was shrewd business. Ditto for the one-year, $6 million contract for former 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, a solid contributor when healthy.  Detroit had a tremendous opportunity to solidify themselves at top-shelf positions along the offensive line, defensive line or even at wide receiver after Amon-Ra St. Brown, but they failed to do so with one of the best draft treasure chests this offseason. The Lions still lack a dynamic interior presence, though.  Jer’Zhan Newton fits the bill as the most dynamic defensive tackle returning to college football this season. But the Lions didn't select Gibbs inside the top 20 to have him undertake a background role in 2023. At Georgia Tech and Alabama, Gibbs was a rocket. From the backfield, on screens, as a slot receiver -- didn't matter. His free-flowing acceleration and elite top-end speed -- he ran 4.36 at the combine -- were always on full display.   Behind Detroit's upper-echelon offensive front, Gibbs will be provided ample space to operate, which is quite dangerous for opposing defenses. He is one of just three receivers that ranked top 10 in receiving grade versus zone and man coverage. Last year: 24th (QB: Jared Goff RB: David Montgomery WR: Amon-Ra St. Brown):  Goff has shown at this point that if he is well protected, he can deliver the ball on time and on target with enough regularity to lead a pretty damn good offense. He doesn't present much of a ceiling beyond what is schemed up for him within the confines of the offense, but when the scheme and the line are as good as Detroit's, that's not as much of an issue. The NFL's 11 best safeties (3. C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Detroit Lions:  In yet another of Howie Roseman’s “How did he get away with that?” moves, the Eagles traded a 2023 fifth-round pick and the worst of their 2024 sixth-round picks to the Saints for Gardner-Johnson and a 2025 seventh-round pick last August. All Gardner-Johnson did in response was to have his best NFL season to date — the 20019 fourth-round pick out of Florida allowed 41 catches on 52 targets for 338 yards, 170 yards after the catch, four touchdowns, six interceptions, three pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 79.8.  As a free-range deep safety in one- and two-high looks, Gardner-Johnson provided extreme value with his sideline-to-sideline range and ball skills. Here against the Cowboys in Week 6, he started the play as the deep-third defender in Cover-1, caught backup quarterback Cooper Rush trying to make a deep cross-body throw to CeeDee Lamb against cornerback James Bradberry, and yoinked in for the interception.  And in this Week 10 interception against the Commanders, Gardner-Johnson showed the ability to drop back in quarters coverage, foiling Taylor Heinicke on this deep pass to Terry McLaurin.  The 2022 season marked by far Gardner-Johnson’s most snaps at free safety — 443, when he’d had just 11 in his last two seasons with the Saints. He had been primarily a box/slot hybrid defender before, and he still has those skills — though all six of his picks came in the deep third. Still, Gardner-Johnson is more than capable of stopping a run play in the backfield with timed gap-shooting moves, and taking down enemy quarterbacks when the need arises.  After a one-year, $8 million contract signing with the Lions, Gardner-Johnson is part of his second defensive rebuild in as many seasons. Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers: 92.2.  2. Kalif Raymond, Detroit Lions: 86.2.  3.  Cooper Kupp, Los Angeles Rams: 84.3.  Deebo Samuel is a mismatch weapon, and San Francisco has found a way to utilize that in the screen game.  Samuel has racked up 356 receiving yards from screen passes over the past two seasons and finished fourth in screen targets a season ago. QB leap history: Who soared in '22, all leaps since '00 (Jared Goff:  Goff entered 2022 looking like a bridge quarterback, but finished the season with QB1 credentials, throwing 324 straight passes without an interception, the longest streak in Lions history. Detroit's Week 18 win at Lambeau Field to knock the Packers out of playoff contention will not be soon forgotten. First-year offensive coordinator (and play caller) Ben Johnson got Goff rolling in 2022 with his bread-and-butter: Play action. Goff led the league in EPA per dropback off play-action fakes, much like how he first broke out with the Rams in 2017. Goff and the Lions were so good to end 2022 that they are getting major hype this season.
