The 10 best NFL player matchups to watch in Week 9 (Minnesota Vikings EDGE Jonathan Greenard vs. Detroit Lions T Taylor Decker - Although this year’s iterations of Vikings-Lions don’t have as much at stake as last season’s, they still project as compelling matchups. Sunday should grant us the first duel between Greenard and Decker along the edge.  Greenard hasn’t been quite as elite in 2025 as he was a season ago, but he’s still assembling a very respectable season. He’s garnered a 72.0 PFF pass-rushing grade, and his 30 pressures are tied for 14th among edge rushers. Similarly, his 16.6% pass-rush win rate is tied for 21st in that contingent.  Decker returned from a two-game absence and was dominant in Week 7 against the Buccaneers, posting an 87.0 PFF pass-blocking grade. All told, he’s allowed 11 pressures and only one sack across 163 opportunities in 2025. Extending back to the start of 2023, his 80.7 pass-blocking grade ranks 16th among qualified tackles.  Greenard certainly bested Decker last season, accruing eight pressures and two sacks during their 27 pass-rushing matchups — yet Detroit still prevailed on both occasions. 2025 trade deadline needs for all 32 NFL teams (DETROIT LIONS: CORNERBACK - You’ll see a lot of people mention pass rusher as Detroit's main deadline need, which is understandable since Aidan Hutchinson is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for them with a 27.1% pass-rush win rate. But edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad is holding his own as well with a 76.4 PFF pass-rush grade this season. If the Lions were to make a move there, it would be for a big fish like Trey Hendrickson or Jaelan Phillips.  I feel like a cornerback depth move is more likely. Detroit knows firsthand what it’s like when the injury bug hits hard at that position. Outside of a fourth-quarter run against the Bears in Week 1, McCarthy has seven quarters of bad football on his short résumé. CBS Dajani (Lions:  This is not a good spot for the Vikings. Not only are they on the road for the second consecutive week, but they are traveling to face the Lions, who are coming off their bye, and have to start J.J. McCarthy at quarterback.  If we are being completely honest, McCarthy hasn't looked like an NFL quarterback for seven of his eight quarters played. Yes, the comeback against the Chicago Bears was fun, but the loss to the Falcons was a disaster. Overall, McCarthy is averaging 152.5 passing yards per game, and has scored three touchdowns compared to four turnovers in his two starts. To make matters worse, this Brian Flores defense has been gashed by opposing quarterbacks over the past couple weeks. Jalen Hurts registered a perfect passer rating against Minnesota a couple weeks ago, and we all saw what Justin Herbert did to them last Thursday night. The Vikings have allowed 32.5 points per game over the last two contests, after allowing just 19.4 points per game in the first five games of the season. I don't have to convince you that the Lions are good. Jared Goff:  The Vikings are coming off an embarrassing defeat on the Thursday Night Prime Time game at the hands of the Chargers. Not only were they unable to run the ball, but they also had little luck slowing down the Los Angeles running game as Kimani Vidal, Justin Herbert, and company rumbled for over 200 yards and a score on 43 carries. The return of Aaron Jones in the Minnesota backfield did little to enhance a Vikings run game that only totaled 34 yards on the night. Carson Wentz spent the game running for his life and ultimately couldn’t finish the contest with a shoulder injury that will require surgery, ending his season. J.J. Turner’s 80.0 PFF coverage mark is the third-best among qualified cornerbacks, and his nine pass breakups lead the NFL. Altogether, Turner has been responsible for 0.14 Wins Above Replacement, tied for the most among corners in 2025.  The Lions assuredly felt great about their cornerback room going into September, but the injury bug has bitten yet again. D.J. Reed is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, while Terrion Arnold is out with a shoulder problem. Even when on the field, Arnold hasn’t been effective, churning out only a 44.4 PFF coverage grade through five games. All told, seven Lions corners — Reed, Arnold, Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, Arthur Maulet, Avonte Maddox and Nick Whiteside — have all played at least 40 snaps this year.  Like Hendrickson, Turner doesn’t seem likely to leave Cincinnati before next week — with one more year on his contract and still only 25, he’s a definite extension candidate. Yet if the Bengals decide to shop their star edge rusher, then their standout corner probably isn’t entirely off limits. The 2023 first-round pick has 64 tackles, three sacks, five tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a pass defensed. Then there’s Lloyd, who won September’s Defensive Player of the Month with four interceptions this season, including a 99-yard pick-six of Patrick Mahomes. While the Jets and Saints aren’t good, no one should overlook Sherwood and Davis. Sherwood has been a linchpin in the middle, racking up 75 tackles, including five for loss and four passes defensed.
