Grades:

Grade for the Lions Firing Matt Patricia, Bob Quinn (Lions fire HC Matt Patricia, GM Bob Quinn: A Grade - Matt Patricia was the last person on Earth who realized that he should be utilizing D'Andre Swift over Adrian Peterson. With everyone calling for Swift to dominate the workload, Patricia and his staff constantly had their geriatric running back dive for 2-yard gains rather than lean on their talented, young back. This resulted in losses earlier in the year, which the Lions couldn't come back from when Matthew Stafford and Kenny Golladay suffered injuries later in the year.  Patricia did not do anything well as Detroit's head coach. He failed to prepare great game plans, and despite being known as a defensive genius by some, he failed to upgrade Detroit's stop unit. In fact, the Lions have gotten worse defensively under his watch.  As for Bob Quinn, let's check out his first- and second-round picks from 2016 to 2019:  Taylor Decker, OT; A'Shawn Robinson,DT.; Jarrad Davis, LB; Jalen Tabor, CB; Frank Ragnow, C; Kerryon Johnson, RB; T.J. Hockenson, TE; Jahlani Tavai, LB.  Quinn hit with some mid-round gems like Kenny Golladay, Jamal Agnew, and Joe Dahl, but this list is ugly. The offensive linemen and Tavai have performed well, but the rest of the first- and second-rounders were busts. T.J. Hockenson is technically not a bust, but spending a top-10 pick on a tight end was a very dubious decision.  Meanwhile, here were Quinn's big-money signings:  Lions sign OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai (5 years, $50 million).  Lions sign CB Desmond Trufant (2 years, $21 million).  Lions sign LB Jamie Collins (3 years, $30 million).  Lions sign TE Jesse James (4 years, $25 million).  Lions sign DE Trey Flowers (5 years, $82.5 million).  Lions sign CB Justin Coleman (4 years, $36 million).  Wow, what great moves! OK, maybe not. Quinn obviously did a poor job of assembling talent in Detroit, so his firing, much like Patricia's, deserves an "A" grade.):  https://walterfootball.com/coachfirehire.php

NFL Rookie Rankings Week 12: Jefferson and Herbert rise this week (13. Jonah Jackson, iOL, Detroit Lions:  The Lions struggled on offense without star rookie back D’Andre Swift and receiver Kenny Golladay, but Jonah Jackson still managed to play quality football. He’s been as consistent as any rookie offensive lineman and will be a major building block for whatever coach the Lions have starting in 2021. His athletic ability limits Jackson’s upside, but his nasty attitude and natural power make him a likely Pro Bowler in the future.  Pre-draft ranking: Top 50, iOL5.  22. D’Andre Swift, RB, Detroit Lions:  D’Andre Swift was unable to play in this past week’s game, and it was evident by the way the Lions performed on offense. Swift was skyrocketing the rookie RB rankings until this week. Now with Robinson, Gibson, and Edwards-Helaire all having a strong Week 11, Swift will need a big performance this Thanksgiving to continue his upwards trajectory. He has a favorable matchup against the Texans struggling defense. Can this Thanksgiving matchup kickstart a late-season surge for Swift where he cements himself as one of the top NFL rookie running backs? (Editor’s note: Swift indeed was not able to suit up versus the Texans on Thanksgiving). Pre-draft ranking: Top 25, RB1.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-rookie-rankings-week-12-justin-jefferson-justin-herbert-rise-2020/2/

2021 Mock Draft Roundup #3

Walterfootball Charlie (11.  DT Christian Barmore - Detroit passed on Derrick Brown for Jeff Okudah, and the early returns on that decision have not been good. Brown is playing well for Carolina, while Okudah has struggled somewhat. The Lions still need help on the inside of their defensive line, and they should target a tackle capable of putting pressure on the quarterback. Barmore has 14 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and three passes batted in 2020. He possesses an excellent skill set, so he could easily be a high riser during the course of the 2020 season. Barmore flashed ability as part of Alabama's rotation in 2019, recording 26 tackles and two sacks. He showed real interior pass-rush potential with upside to develop more ability to get after the quarterback. It was only his redshirt freshman season, so he could easily be primed to break out in 2020 or 2021. Some team sources are high on him, while others want to see him become a more well-rounded player and a better run defender before they project him to be a high first-rounder.  The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Barmore has good size with length at the point of attack to go along with quickness and athleticism. He could be the next Alabama interior lineman who becomes an early-round prospect similar to Quinnen Williams, Da'Ron Payne, Jonathan Allen and Raekwon Davis - among others.  47.  CB Paulson Adebo:  Desmond Trufant is not the player he used to be, and Jeff Okudah has struggled as a rookie. Okudah should straighten out and be fine, but the Lions could use more corner talent to pair with him.  Adebo (6-1, 190) is a big corner who has cover skills, a tremendous ability to play the ball, and good instincts. In 2018, Adebo recorded 64 tackles with 20 passes broken up and four interceptions. Against Northwestern in the 2019 season opener, he picked up where he left off in 2018, recording five tackles with two passes batted and an interception. However, he had an ugly game against Central Florida, getting roasted on some double moves. Adebo totaled 33 tackles with four interceptions and 10 passes broken up in 2019.  The question for Adebo will be if he can handle speed receivers at the next level. He also is an aggressive corner and will have to learn to play with more discipline to avoid getting burned by double moves.) (11-27-20):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2021charlie.php

CBS Edwards (11. LB Micah Parsons:  Detroit's embarrassing loss to Carolina likely sealed Matt Patricia's fate. The Lions are surrendering the third most rushing yards per game this season, so it would behoove them to get stronger up the middle. Micah Parsons is a rangy player that would fulfill the off-ball role.) Walterfootball (13.  Christian Barmore, DT:  The Lions need to address every position on defense, and this includes the front line, which took a hit with some offseason losses prior to 2020.  Christian Barmore has nice length, quickness and athleticism. 46. CB Kary Vincent:  The Lions have serious problems at cornerback, so they may use a second-day pick on the position.  Kary Vincent Jr. is small (5-10), but he can be a solid slot corner at the next level.) (11-25-20):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2021.php

CBS Trapasso (12.  WR Jaylen Waddle:  Basically the entire Lions receiver group is bound for free agency in 2021, so that position needs to be replenished with young talent.) (11-25-20):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2021-nfl-mock-draft-bears-reset-at-qb-with-georgias-jt-daniels-packers-pick-wide-receiver/

CBS Wilson (11.  LB Jaycee Horn:  The Lions have a lot of needs, and yes they drafted Jeffrey Okudah third overall in the spring. Okudah has been inconsistent at times this season (we're still confident he's going to be really good) but regardless, Detroit still needs to add depth in the secondary. Horn had a strong 2020 campaign before he decided to opt out earlier this month.) (11-24-20):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2021-nfl-mock-draft-falcons-find-their-next-matt-ryan-broncos-again-in-the-market-for-a-franchise-qb/

Draft Tek (13. DT Marvin Wilson:  Since the glory years of Ndomukong Suh and the less lauded Nick Fairley, the Lions have been a bit reticent about drafting first-round D tackles. They passed on Aaron Donald and Ed Oliver to take a couple of tight ends in recent years, and while TJ Hockenson is nice, that really hasn't worked out for them. Now they've got a defensive-minded head coach in Matt Patricia, yet their defense is bottom eight in the league in sacks and has allowed a league-high 16 rushing TDs. Looks like it may be time to get back to drafting Big Uglies who can move and tightening up that front.  One gigantic human who is unquestionably talented is Marvin Wilson of Florida State. A Seminole lineman reminiscent of their 1990s peak, Wilson is 310 pounds of five-star athlete. But, he has missed enough time with injury to send his draft stock sliding from top-10 lock to mid-round calculated risk. When he's right, he's a coveted breed: big guy with the strength to hold down the middle against the run and the quicks to blow up the pocket and wreak havoc against the pass. In this case, the reward may well be worth the risk. --Jud Branam   46. DT Xavier Thomas 78.  OC Drake Jackson  109.  WR Elijah Moore.  141.  S Reed Blankenship.) (11-18-20):  https://www.drafttek.com/2021-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Lions-Draft-Page.asp

USA Today Middle-Hurst Schwartz (11. Lions — Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama: Even if Detroit brings back Kenny Golladay on a hefty extension, bolstering the receiving corps should remain a point of emphasis. Prior to having his season cut short by a broken ankle, Waddle established himself as college football's pre-eminent big-play threat by record 22.3 yards per reception.) (11-12-20):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2020/11/12/nfl-mock-draft-trevor-lawrence-justin-fields-cowboys-giants/6260945002/

SN (12. Detroit Lions (3-5) - DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama:  The Lions are unllikely to re-sign Marvin Jones Jr. in 2021 and will need a reliable playmaker to complement Kenny Golladay. Smith has picked up from he left off last season, posting 68 catches for 1,256 yards and 14 TDs, making his big share of big plays all over the field in another loaded receiving corps. He has 56 catches for 759 yards and 8 more TDs in six games this season.) (11-9-20):   https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2021-patriots-jets-falcons-vikings/8w541248ei8d12gbmni6j94hq

PFF Renner (13. ED JAYSON OWEH, PENN STATE:  At 6-foot-5 and 252 pounds with a reported sub-4.4 40, Oweh personifies the term “freak.” That gets drafted highly at the edge position regardless of how you perform on the football field. Oweh has improved in the latter, as he had a breakout 10-pressure performance in Penn State’s Big Ten opener against Indiana.) (11-4-20):  https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-2021-nfl-mock-draft-trevor-lawrence-is-still-the-jets-pick-at-no-1-overall-justin-fields-to-the-giants-at-no-2

'Pathetic,' and 'pretty standard.' Lions fans react to Thanksgiving day performance:  https://www.wxyz.com/sports/pathetic-and-pretty-standard-lions-fans-react-to-thanksgiving-day-performance

What we learned from NFL Thanksgiving doubleheader (Houston Texans 41, Detroit Lions 25:  1. Deshaun Watson continues to carry the Houston Texans (4-7) with breathtaking throws and near impeccable play. The quarterback divebombed a lousy Lions defense with big plays, used his magic to escape pressure and fired lasers all over the field. Watson picked apart Detroit like the last bits of meat on a Thanksgiving bird. Watson tossed four TDs, two over 25 air-yards, and completed 17 of 25 passes for 318 yards and a 150.4 passer rating. Injuries to Randall Cobb and Kenny Stills didn't come into play, with Watson leaning on Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks. Fuller tortured Lions corners with his speed, catching six passes for a whopping 171 yards and two TDs. The final Texans TD was a wonderful play call by OC Tim Kelly. An elongated flea-flicker that got Fuller wide open, without a defender within 20 yards, injected some pizzazz into a game that felt like it was inoculated with tryptophan early in the contest. Not much separates the overall rosters in Thursday's matchup, except one team has Watson, and the other does not. A year in which Watson is playing much better than his team's four wins suggest, the QB reminded a national audience he's one of the best signal-callers in the NFL.  2. Both clubs got off to a sloppy start, looking every bit of cellar-dwellers in a sleepwalking first half. The Lions, in particular, were careless with the football, turning it over on three straight possessions following an opening-drive score. Fortunately for Detroit, Houston was also shooting itself in the foot, with one fumble of its own and a cavalcade of penalties. In the first two quarters, the Texans committed eight penalties for 65 yards. The slapdash first half included a combined four turnovers, 95 yards in penalties, a missed PAT and a kickoff out of bounds and ended with poor clock management. The silver lining for Houston was J.J. Watt's pick-6 of Matthew Stafford early in the first quarter. The former DPOY had four batted balls last week. Thursday, he held onto one and got his team on the board as the offense scuttled early.  3. The Lions offense couldn't take advantage of a defense that struggled all year. Houston entered last in the NFL at creating turnovers. Detroit, in a giving mood, coughed it up three times. Insistent upon establishing the run against the league's worst run defense, the Lions couldn't get on track early, earning just 2.5 yards per carry on 17 first-half totes. To open the third quarter, Detroit finally took advantage of the Texans' bad run D, sticking to the ground on 10 straight plays to open the half while trailing by nine points. Emblematic of the Lions issues, a 14-play drive took over half of the quarter but ended with a field goal. Outside of a few nice plays to tight end T.J. Hockenson, the Detroit offense was an inconsistent bore for much of the afternoon.  4. The Lions lost to a three-win team for the second straight week. Matt Patricia is staring at the end of the line. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday morning that the Thanksgiving game loomed large for the coach's future in Detroit. Consider it an abject failure. The Lions coach managed the game poorly, his defense is atrocious, and the entire team sleepwalked much of the contest. Detroit ownership put out a mandate that the team needed to be competitive in December in order for the brass to keep their jobs in 2021. Heading into last week, Patricia's team had a chance to make a run and at least remain in the hunt for the playoffs. Instead, his club laid back-to-back rotten eggs. Getting lambasted by a fellow bad team on a national stage could be the final nail that ends Patricia's tenure in Detroit.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/what-we-learned-from-nfl-thanksgiving-doubleheader

Detroit was outclassed on offense and defense Thursday, unable to handle any aspect of a Texans team playing for an interim coach. Detroit still couldn't take away an opponent's best offensive option and had essentially no offensive consistency. Mike Rothstein's Halftime Observations (Despite three turnovers and another lackluster defensive performance, Detroit is still somehow in the game against Houston, trailing the Texans, 23-14. The Lions have struggled in man-to-man defense with Deshaun Watson continually slicing through Detroit's coverages. The one thing the Lions can grasp on to is T.J. Hockenson, who has four catches for 80 yards and has been hard for Houston to deal with. Kerryon Johnson has also played well with 84 total yards. Six things to watch for during NFL Thanksgiving doubleheader:  https://www.nfl.com/news/six-things-to-watch-for-during-nfl-thanksgiving-doubleheader

2020's 10 best run-blocking teams by expected rushing yards (5.  Detroit Lions (2020 stats: 4.48 xYPC, 838 yards (4.0 YPC), 927 ERY, -89 RYOE (-0.43 per att), 7 rush TDs):  The Lions might have something in D'Andre Swift. The game tape tells us to pay attention to the rookie, and sure enough, on his 70 attempts, he's gained 25 more yards than expected, good for a rate of +0.35 RYOE per attempt. As a team, Detroit is nearly 100 yards below expectation, which paints a picture of a backfield that has a clear No. 1 back, even if it hasn't quite committed to giving him the lion's share (pun unintended) of the carries. Between Weeks 6 (when Swift broke out with a 116-yard game) and 10, Swift logged 58 rushing attempts, or 52.3 percent of the attempts made by Lions backs in that span. (Swift missed Week 11 after dealing with concussion issues last week.) Swift accounts for all of Detroit's positive RYOE, providing proof the Lions' best course forward is with Swift as the lead back. If Detroit can become a team that rushes as effectively as it blocks, it might have a chance to turn things around before long.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2020-s-10-best-run-blocking-teams-by-expected-rushing-yards

Predictions:

2021 NFL Draft:

Week 12 Predictions

SN Iyer (Game of the Midweek I: Texans (-2.5, -51.5) at Lions:  The Texans have Deshaun Watson cooking with gas with all of his wide receivers and is also feeling it as a runner. They have great confidence offensively after having their way with the Patriots. They draw a weaker defense this week and their run defense will get another break, assuming D'Andre Swift misses another game with a concussion. Houston has been more motivated without Bill O'Brien while Detroit is now going through the motions with Matt Patricia.  Pick: Texans win 27-24 and cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-12-spreads-chiefs-eagles-seahawks-raiders/leiefy7blpix19pqzaglmsru7

SN Bender (Houston Texans (-2.5) at Detroit Lions - The Lions have lost their last three Thanksgiving games, and they are coming off a listless performance in a 20-0 shutout against the Panthers. Houston has won two of its last three, and Deshaun Watson hasn’t thrown an interception in five games.  Pick: Texans 28, Lions 23):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-12-packers-bears-buccaneers-chiefs/ojj8263or9061s1qgyheuj3tf

Walter football (Week 12 NFL Pick: Texans 27, Lions 20):  https://walterfootball.com/nflpicks2020_12early.php

CBS Breech (NFL Week 12 Picks - Houston (3-7) at Detroit (4-6):  If you didn't get to watch the Lions on Sunday -- and I'm guessing you didn't because I'm pretty sure their game was only shown to about .00001% of the country -- they got shut out by the Panthers. SHUT. OUT. BY. THE. PANTHERS. The reason I used capital letters there is because it's nearly impossible to get shut out in today's NFL, but the Lions still somehow managed to do it. Since Oct. 21 of last season, there have only been three games where a team scored zero points: The Lions gave us one and the Jets gave us the other two. When you're on a list that only includes one other team and that team is the Jets, you've already lost. Ironically enough, if you asked me to make a list of of teams that are probably going to have a new coach next year, I'd probably also list the Jets and the Lions. Like I said, being on the same list as the Jets is never a good thing.  I know the Lions didn't have Kenny Golladay in Week 11 and I know they didn't have D'Andre Swift, but I don't think things are going to get much better for Detroit this week since they're going to be playing on just three days rest. The other problem for the Lions is that they've given up the fourth-most points in the NFL this year, and now, they have to face one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league. Since Week 5, Deshaun Watson has thrown 11 touchdown passes and zero interceptions while averaging 286.4 yards per game. If the Texans were any good, we'd be talking a lot more about Watson's brilliant run, but they're not. Also, did I mention Watson has never lost a game in his career on short rest? Because he's never lost a game in his career on short rest (7-0).  That being said, the fact of the matter is that I have to choose between two bad teams here. This is like choosing between green bean casserole and corn pudding as your main side dish at Thanksgiving. Corn pudding got shut out on Sunday, so I'm taking green bean casserole.  The pick: Texans 30-23 over Lions):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-picks-ravens-stun-undefeated-steelers-on-thanksgiving-chiefs-get-in-shootout-with-buccaneers/

CBS Prisco (Houston Texans at Detroit Lions:  The Texans came alive against the Patriots and showed well on offense. I expect that to carry over here with Deshaun Watson having a big day against the bad Lions defense. But look for Matt Stafford to also play well. This will be high scoring, with the Lions winning on Thanksgiving. Pick: Lions 31, Texans 29):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/pete-priscos-nfl-week-12-picks-chiefs-keep-rolling-vs-buccaneers-saints-edge-out-broncos/

CBS Sullivan (Houston at Detroit:  Deshaun Watson reminded us last week against New England that he can will his team to victory on any given Sunday. Not only that, but Houston's run defense showed improvement against the Patriots' strong rushing attack in Week 11. This is part of the Texans heating up for their standards, covering back-to-back games since starting the year off 1-7 ATS. As he prepares to take on the Lions on Thanksgiving, it's worth nothing he's 7-0 straight-up in his career on short rest and 3-2-2 ATS. While the Lions have historically played well on Thanksgiving (6-2 ATS in their last eight games), this version of Detroit looks like they've lost faith in their head coach as of late, coming into Week 12 1-3 SU and ATS over their last four games. Projected score: Texans 28, Detroit 20):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-odds-picks-kyler-murray-rolls-in-new-england-steelers-remain-undefeated-with-thanksgiving-win/

CBS Dajani (Houston Texans (3-7) at Detroit Lions (4-6):  The Texans are coming off of a 27-20 win over the New England Patriots, while the Lions were blanked 20-0 by the Carolina Panthers. Matthew Stafford sure missed Kenny Golladay this past week, and the Lions hope that he will be healthy enough to suit up on Thursday. The Texans will also look to attack through the air, as Deshaun Watson has been on a roll as of late. Last week he passed for 344 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another. He has thrown seven touchdowns and zero interceptions over his past three games on the road. The Texans are favorites in this matchup, but the Lions are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight Thanksgiving matchups. They even covered last year against the Chicago Bears, when David Blough got the start at quarterback!  Prediction: Lions 23, Texans 21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/best-nfl-thanksgiving-bets-top-plays-on-point-spread-total-and-player-props-for-both-holiday-games/

CBS Brinson (Houston (3-7) at Detroit (4-6):  You're reading this on Thursday morning. I wrote this on Wednesday night. There's probably a three-hour window in which you can make a decision on this game. I think I am taking the Lions here, but I really, really don't like it. I hate it, in fact. Everything about the Texans is better. Except it appears D'Andre Swift is going to play and I don't count out Kenny Golladay until he's ruled out. If Golladay plays, I will take Detroit +3 as a best bet. I will also take Golladay to score a TD as a best bet. If Swift plays, I love his over rush yards. I kind of like Adrian Peterson over rush yards if he doesn't. But I can't tell you on either before a noon Thursday game. Do the smart thing and just watch this out of the corner of your eye while shoving stuffing into your mouth. I strongly lean under here too, because the Texans don't get cranked up against bad opponents. They're like the Panthers in that sense. The only thing I absolutely LOVE in this game? Will Fuller over receiving yards, up to 77.  The Pick: Lions 24, Texans 21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-odds-picks-lions-washington-win-on-thanksgiving-plus-more-big-upsets/

PFT (Texans (-3) at Lions:  MDS’s take: The Texans are coming off perhaps their best performance of the season against the Patriots, and the Lions are coming off perhaps their worst against the Panthers. Houston will show it’s continuing to play hard for Romeo Crennel.  MDS’s pick: Texans 27, Lions 17.  Florio’s take: If the former Houston Roughnecks quarterback can master the Lions, the current Houston Texans quarterback should be able to do it, too.  Florio’s pick: Texans 24, Lions 17.):  https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/11/25/nfl-week-12-picks/

NFL.com (Houston Texans 27, Detroit Lions 20:  Feel free to call Deshaun Watson one of the NFL's top five quarterbacks at the Thanksgiving table, especially when he's coming off one of his best career games against a Patriots defense with similar coverage tendencies to these Lions. The questionable status of two key Lions -- Jenga piece Kenny Golladay and explosive runner D'Andre Swift -- impacts the score prediction here, but I love the Texans to win either way, improving their record to 4-1 against teams that currently have a losing record.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-week-12-game-picks-steelers-sweep-ravens-chiefs-edge-buccaneers

NFL RealGM (Houston Texans at Detroit Lions:  (+2.5): How bad is it in Detroit? The 4-6 Lions are home underdogs to a 3-7 Texans team that hasn’t beaten a team with more than four wins all year. What’s worse for Detroit is that it’s hard to argue with the line. Their passionless defense stands little chance of being more than a mild inconvenience for Deshaun Watson, who is having an MVP-caliber season on a bad team in an awful situation. Houston’s own miserable defense gives the Lions a chance, especially if rookie RB D’Andre Swift is back after missing the Week 11 shutout loss with a concussion.  Texans 33, Lions 27):  https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3319/Football-Meteorology-For-NFL-Week-12

O'HARA'S FINAL THOUGHTS: Lions looking forward to playing on Thanksgiving (Prediction: The Texans are favored in this game, and it's not because of the quality of teams they have beaten – Jacksonville (1-9) twice, and New England (4-6) last week.
