Flowers was one of five edge defenders to eclipse a 90.0 overall grade last year, and with 64 (t-10th) pressures and 37 stops (9th) in a contract year, he earned his lucrative deal. Mock Draft Roundup 11

Draftwire Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions - CB Greedy Williams.  43. WR AJ Brown  88. S Darnell Savage. 111. LB Ben Burr-Kirven) (3-23-19):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/gallery/2019-nfl-mock-draft-free-agency-4-rounds-trades-kyler-murray-dwayne-haskins-nick-bosa-josh-allen-quinnen-williams-drew-lock-daniel-jones/

SN Mock Draft (8. DE Rashan Gary:  Gary, a versatile defender, can produce even better in Matt Patricia’s scheme than he did with the Wolverines. He uses his hands, power and big frame (6-4, 277 pounds) to occupy run-blockers. He also has some intriguing inside pass-rush ability.) (3-23-19):   http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2019-giants-rebuild-steelers-packers/5cdhxq1t8eyv1qf492c84f96x

DraftCountdown (8. TE TJ Hockenson:  Even though the Lions broke the bank to sign Trey Flowers in free agency they could still opt for one of the top pass rushers with this pick. However, Detroit has been trying to upgrade at tight end position for a while now, even reportedly attempting to trade for Rob Gronkowski last offseason. The situation hasn’t gotten much better since, with Jesse James profiling as more of a backup or fringe-starter.  Hockenson was overshadowed on his own team by Noah Fant, who is flashier and a more dynamic vertical threat. It will likely be Hockenson who hears his name called first on Draft Day though. Hockenson is very effective in the short to intermediate passing attack and a major headache in the redzone but really it’s his blocking ability that sets him apart. This class features a bumper crop of talented tight ends, but none are more well-rounded than Hockenson.) (3-22-19):   http://www.draftcountdown.com/mock-draft/2019-mock-draft/

CBS Sean Wagner-McGough (8. CB Greedy Williams:  The Lions are one of the most interesting teams in this draft. They could go in a number of different ways. Edge rusher was a priority before free agency, but the team signed Trey Flowers to a big deal. They should still try to upgrade up front, but Williams is the best cornerback in the draft and the Lions have a need in the secondary even after signing Justin Coleman.) (3-21-19):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2019-nfl-mock-draft-giants-use-extra-first-round-pick-on-drew-lock-dolphins-trade-up-for-dwayne-haskins/

NFL.com Lance Zeirlein (8. DE Montez Sweat:  Given that tests revealed a heart condition for Sweat, it's possible that he could slip a bit in this draft. The Lions might not allow him to fall past this selection, though, as they are still working to beef up an edge rush that now includes free-agent signee Trey Flowers.) (3-21-18):  http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001014266/article/lance-zierlein-2019-nfl-mock-draft-10-kyler-murray-to-raiders

Walter Football 2019 NFL Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions - LB Devin White: The Lions have one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL. They can't cover anyone over the middle of the field. They need to add a player who can become the leader of their defensive unit at the position. If they do so, perhaps they'll finally be able to compete with some of the top teams in their division.  Devin White was extremely productive this past season, logging 133 tackles. A projected running back, White is still learning the position, which is crazy considering how great he was in 2017. White is already generating a buzz for the 2019 NFL Draft, as Charlie Campbell reported in the NFL Hot Press.  43.  CB Justin Layne:  The Lions have just two viable cornerbacks in Darius Slay and the newly acquired Justin Coleman. This is a major problem, given that they have to go up against Aaron Rodgers and now Kirk Cousins twice per year.  Justin Layne has nice size at 6-3, 185, and he was able to answer speed concerns at the combine. We recently featured him on the 2019 NFL Draft Stock Report.  88.  WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside:  Detroit's offense suffered a sharp decline after Golden Tate was traded. Here's a long-term replacement in the receiving corps.  J.J. Arcega-Whiteside has speed concerns, but he's a mismatch receiver with great size (6-3, 225).  104. TE Caleb Wilson:  The Lions didn't get the most out of Eric Ebron, but perhaps their next tight end will live up to expectations. Serving as Josh Rosen's favorite target, Caleb Wilson is a talented route-runner who was very productive last season. He needs to improve his blocking. 131. S Will Harris:  The Lions need help all over their defense, and that includes their dubious safety situation.  184.  CB Hamp Cheevers:  The Lions need as much help in the secondary as possible. Hamp Cheevers is a small cornerback (5-10, 180) with only one year of starting experience. 204. QB Jacob Dolegala:  The Lions should begin looking into grooming a potential successor for Matthew Stafford.) (3-20-19):  http://walterfootball.com/draft2019.php

DraftTek Mock Draft (8. LB Devin White.  43. S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson 88. DT Isaiah Buggs  111. CB Joejuan Williams.  146. QB Will Grier  184. RB Karan Higdon.  204.  WR Miles Boykin.  224. OG Jacob Patterson.  229. TE Dawson Knox) (3-20-19):   https://www.drafttek.com/2019-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round1.asp

CBS Will Brinson (8.  DE Rashan Gary:  Not entirely sure why I keep giving them the local product, but adding Gary to Trey Flowers and the recently acquired interior guys (Snacks, etc) would go a long way towards giving Matt Patricia a ridiculous defensive line with which to build around.) (3-20-19):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2019-nfl-mock-draft-giants-trade-for-josh-rosen-salvage-offseason-with-splashy-first-round/

Freep Birkett (8. DT Ed Oliver:  I had one scout tell me Oliver will be at his best if he goes to a team that will use him like the Patriots used Trey Flowers. Voila! Oliver didn’t have a great 2018, but he can play just about anywhere on the defensive line and the Lions still need help up front. With other top options off the board, this a player Matt Patricia can use on defense.) (3-20-19):  https://www.freep.com/story/sports/2019/03/20/detroit-lions-nfl-mock-draft/3218938002/

CBS Tom Fornelli (8. LB Khalil Hodge:  The last linebacker out of Buffalo named Khalil turned out to be pretty good. This one had 419 tackles, 21 TFL, 5.5 sacks and 3 interceptions in three seasons.) (3-19-19):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2019-nfl-mock-draft-heres-what-happens-if-you-pick-guys-based-solely-by-college-careers/

NFL.com Bucky Brooks (8. DE Montez Sweat:  Adding a long, rangy pass rusher opposite Trey Flowers would give the Lions a dynamic duo on the edges to harass QB1s in the pocket. The recent news that tests at the combine revealed Sweat has a heart condition could lead some teams to think twice before picking him, but based on what I know at this point, I still expect him to be a top-10 selection.) (3-19-19):  http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001023154/article/bucky-brooks-2019-nfl-mock-draft-30-giants-raiders-take-qbs

Walter football 2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (8. DE Montez Sweat:  Even if Ziggy Ansah is re-signed, the Lions need more edge rush. Sweat has a fast first-step with functional strength and some natural feel as a pass-rusher. He has just two years of playing time, so he has upside to develop. That could be seen at the Senior Bowl, where he dominated against better competition. Sweat is a long, fast edge rusher who would be a great fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense or could play end in a 4-3. To cap off his great offseason, Sweat had a record-setting 40 time at the NFL Scouting Combine, and that workout will vault him into the top 10. In 2018, Sweat totaled 53 tackles, 14 for a loss, 11.5 sacks and one forced fumble. The 6-foot-6, 252-pounder turned in an excellent 2017 season and was dynamic defender for the Bulldogs. He totaled 48 tackles with 15.5 tackles for a loss and 10.5 sacks for the year.  43.  DT Jeffrey Simmons:  The Lions could use an interior pass-rusher to rotate with their run stuffers.  The 6-foot-4, 301-pounder is a special player who possesses an excellent combination of speed, athleticism, size and strength. He has the ability to put pressure on the quarterback and cause a lot of disruption behind the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately for Simmons, he tore an ACL preparing for the combine, so he could miss part or all off his rookie season in the NFL. That injury could turn drop him from the top 10 to the back half of the first round or even Round 2.  In 2018, Simmons recorded 63 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and four passes batted. As a sophomore, he totaled 60 tackles with five sacks, 12 tackles for a loss, one pass batted and two forced fumbles. Simmons will be very polarizing because of off-the-field issues. In a video that is reminiscent of Joe Mixon, Simmons is seen beating a woman in a street fight, throwing multiple punches. Some teams that don't consider players with a history of domestic violence will immediately remove Simmons from their draft boards.  88. TE Caleb Wilson:  The Lions moved on from Eric Ebron, and he is breaking out with the Colts while Detroit has missed a receiving threat at tight end. Here's a mismatch weapon.  Wilson totaled 60 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns in 2018. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder was phenomenal in 2017 as the most reliable receiving threat for Josh Rosen. Prior to a season-ending foot injury, Wilson had 38 receptions for 490 yards and one touchdown. He was instrumental in the legendary comeback over Texas A&M, hauling in 15 passes for 208 yards in that game. As a freshman in 2016, he had 16 catches for 220 yards. Wilson is a quick tight end who runs good routes and is dangerous as a run-after-the-catch threat.  111. OT Chuma Edoga:  The Lions take some offensive line depth and competition.) (3-18-19):   http://walterfootball.com/draft2019charlie.php

Rotoworld Josh Norris (8. LB Devin White.  43. DT Jeffrey Simmons.  88. CB Sean Bunting. 111. DE Oshane Ximines. 146. WR KeeSean Johnson. 184. S Lukas Denis. 204. S Marvell Tell.  224. TE Trevon Wescoe.  229. OT Jon Baker) (3-18-19):  https://www.rotoworld.com/article/mock-drafts/pre-free-agency-mock-draft

SI Mock Draft (8.  CB DeAndre Baker:  I thought this was an interesting note: Of the consensus top corners in this draft, Baker played the most even man-to-zone ratio (54.4 to 45.6) in college, where as most of the other dominant corners in this draft were more man-focused. A hunch: Matt Patricia is looking for heady guys who can slip easily from man to zone coverage to rattle opposing QBs. If they’re not thrilled with, say, Rashan Gary as a multi-tooled player up front and Hockenson is off the board, maybe Baker makes some sense here.) (3-19-19):    https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/03/19/mock-draft-round-1-projection-kyler-murray-patriots-broncos-trade-dwayne-haskins-washington

CBS 2019 NFL Chris Traipasso Mock Draft (8. CB Greedy Williams:  Williams is a long, athletic cornerback who'd formulate an awesome trio with Darius Slay and new nickel corner Justin Coleman in Detroit.  43. S Juan Thornhill:  The Lions are pumped to get Thornhill here. He's a dynamic playmaker thanks to explosive athletic traits.) (3-15-19):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2019-nfl-mock-draft-giants-trade-pick-acquired-in-odell-beckham-trade-for-josh-rosen-titans-go-qb/

USA Today Nate Davis (8. TE TJ Hockenson: Clones are never as good as the source material, but Detroit coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn seem to be attempting to create the Motown Patriots. Hockenson isn't Gronk, but in the spirit of the apparent game plan) (3-14-19):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2019/03/14/nfl-mock-draft-2019-odell-beckham-free-agency/3148649002/

CBS RJ White (8. QB Dwayne Haskins:  Out of left field? Perhaps, but the Lions did meet with Haskins at the combine, then spent free agency throwing gobs of money at players like Trey Flowers, Justin Coleman and Jesse James. It sure seems like they're laying the foundation to make a run, and the blueprint in the current NFL is to do it with a rookie-deal QB. I'd expect Matthew Stafford to remain the starter in 2019 then hit the trade block the next offseason.) (3-13-19):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2019-nfl-mock-draft-giants-add-pass-rusher-odell-beckham-replacement-and-eli-mannings-heir-apparent-in-trade/

CBS Ryan Wilson (8.  TE TJ Hockenson:  After signing Trey Flowers and Danny Amendola, the transformation to Patriots Midwest continues with Hockenson, who has drawn comparisons to Rob Gronkowski. He reminds us more of Travis Kelce but either way, a legit target for Matthew Stafford.  43. CB Joejuan Williams: A long, physical corner who has had a strong pre-draft season and will match up well against bigger NFL receivers.) Detroit Lions Website (8.  LB Devin White:  Put him next to Jarrad Davis, and the Lions would have their best linebacker tandem since Chris Spielman and Mike Johnson mowed down ball carriers in 1994-95 like Rome plows going through bamboo.) Yahoo Eric Edholm (8. TE TJ Hockenson:  Fans of this team who boo a pick based on the position they play should have their season tickets revoked. Hockenson is not Eric Ebron, people; he’s one of the safer picks in the draft who will be a force as a blocker and receiver, and he’s only beginning to reach his ceiling after a breakout redshirt sophomore season. The Lions have drafted almost exclusively for need with their top picks under GM Bob Quinn, and the team has made it known they need help at this position. We almost mocked Hock to Jacksonville the pick prior, but Metcalf’s nuclear combine tilted the picks slightly.) NFL.com Schrager's Mock Draft (8. DE Montez Sweat:  One of my favorite names in this draft is also one of my favorite prospects. Tall, lean, high-energy from the jump, Sweat could have left after his junior year, but he stayed in Starkville and had an outstanding senior campaign that earned him All-America honors. With Ziggy Ansah set to hit free agency, the Lions need pressure off the edge.) USA Today Mock Middlehurst-Schwartz (8. DE Clelin Ferrell:  While Detroit has a pressing need to ramp up its pass rush, Matt Patricia seems to favor edge presences who aren't merely one-note. Draft Scout Serritella Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions -- TJ Hockenson: Its been five years since the Lions last used a first round pick on a tight end; Eric Ebron has since moved onto Indianapolis and the current regime in Detroit values strong tight end play.  43. CB Trayvon Mullen:  The Lions are in need of help at the corner spot and Mullen brings a great size/speed combo to help provide some stability.) MLive Kyle Meinke (8. DE Clelin Ferrell: This would be an interesting way for the draft to unfold. The Lions desperately need pass rushers, after pressuring opposing quarterbacks on just 29 percent of their dropbacks last year. That was 31st in the league. But they could also take the No. 1 linebacker off the board, or the No. 1 offensive tackle, or the No. 1 receiver, or -- God forbid -- the No. 1 tight end.  With so many sensible options, let's consult the scouting report on Bob Quinn. He likes high-floor players at positions of need, and who hail from power schools. And nobody still on the board checks more of those boxes than Ferrell. He's a polished pass rusher who racked up 11.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss last year. He finished with 27 sacks and 50.5 tackles for loss for his career, plus won two national championships.  A big-time talent with big-time production for a big-time winner? Ferrell is exactly the sort of prospect Bob Quinn goes for. And he'd add instant teeth to a defense that became one of the league's stingiest down the stretch, despite its obvious personnel shortcomings.) Rotoworld Nystrom (8. DE Clelin Ferrell:  With Ziggy Ansah a free agent and the cornerback slot across from Darius Slay a black hole, the Lions need an edge rusher and a corner in the worst way. With Greedy Williams off the board, they can focus on edge help. Ferrell gets nitpicked because he doesn’t have Josh Allen’s physical tools, but he’s a consistent problem for offensive tackles because he’s so well-rounded. Ferrell wracked up 50.5 TFL and 27 sacks over the past three years on college football’s biggest stage.) (2-5-19): http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/86139/344/nystrom-mock-draft-10

Detroit News Justin Rogers (8. DE Clelin Ferrell: The Lions probably would love the opportunity to trade down and add equity, and they might be able to do so if there’s a quarterback on the board that interests multiple teams. At No. 8, Ferrell offers a high-floor edge defender who knows how to use his strength and length to make plays in the backfield, recording 38 tackles for loss over the past two seasons.)(2-5-19):  https://www.detroitnews.com/picture-gallery/sports/nfl/lions/2019/02/05/justin-rogers-2019-nfl-mock-draft-1-0/2767928002/

Draft Scout Rob Rang's Mock Draft (8.  LB Josh Allen:  With Ziggy Ansah set to enter free agency, the Lions will be looking for edge rushers. Allen possesses the burst and bend up-field to make an immediate impact in this area and possesses the maturity Matt Patricia may be looking to add to his young defense. As has been well documented, Allen considered leaving early for the NFL last season but opted to return, significantly improving his stock as a senior with improved strength, technique and even in coverage.) Strangely, I think a healthy Lions team next year can contend for a playoff spot.) (2-1-19):   https://thebiglead.com/2019/02/01/2019-nfl-mock-draft-kyler-murray-nick-bosa-drew-lock-dwayne-haskins/
