Perhaps the most impactful move was on the coaching staff, as coach Dan Campbell replaced former offensive coordinator John Morton with Drew Petzing, who was the Cardinals' OC the past three seasons.  In terms of player personnel, one key change will be at tackle, as Detroit granted longtime left tackle Decker's request for release. In response, the Lions are expected to move star right tackle Penei Sewell to the left side. They used their first-round pick on Miller to fill the ensuing hole at right tackle.  Similarly, the Lions released veteran center Graham Glasgow, who was due $7 million in cash per OverTheCap.com, after a disappointing season following Frank Ragnow's retirement last summer. They replaced Glasgow with free agent Cade Mays, who should be a mild upgrade for a similar price.  Perhaps Detroit's best move of the offseason was dealing Montgomery for a fourth-round pick, seventh-round pick and OL Juice Scruggs. Any time a team can get that type of draft capital for a 29-year-old backup running back, it has to jump at the chance. The Lions were right to do so even though Isiah Pacheco, who they signed in free agency, will likely be a downgrade.  The Lions also locked up Campbell to a four-year, $81 million extension, securing the linebacker for years to come. Detroit Lions:  What's working for them: Detroit will start the season as easily the most capable team on this list, and it might finish the year that way, too. The Lions stand alone as the only outfit among the eight to finish with a winning record in 2025 as well as a positive point differential, with its +68 mark actually the best in the NFC North.  Last season's downswing was relatively straightforward: The team broke in two new play-callers while again navigating a rash of injuries on defense. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs said earlier in June that the offense was well ahead of where it was at this point last year, and coordinator Drew Petzing could help the group achieve some consistency while still maintaining its explosive flair. If the defense avoids the kind of calamitous personnel hits that have derailed it for the last two years, the unit could be difficult to crack.  The NFC North is without equal as the league's most cutthroat foursome, but the Lions are every bit as competitive as any other team within the group. Playing a fourth-place schedule, which prior to the Week 6 bye serves up only one team that had a winning record in 2025, could vault Detroit back to the top of the division it claimed in 2023 and '24.  What's working against them: With little room for error, Detroit could see its hopes dashed once again by a few simple setbacks.  The offensive line appears to have a more stable setup with All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell flipping to the left side as first-rounder Blake Miller steps in on the right, but vulnerabilities up front could linger, particularly on the interior. Gibbs is also set to take on a much heavier workload after David Montgomery was traded to Houston, and any injury or missed time could have a major ripple effect. Meanwhile, improved health is hardly something the defense can rely on, with safety Kerby Joseph's uncertain recovery timeline for a knee ailment reinforcing the potential for further letdowns.  In a lesser division, the Lions would likely enter the season as a front-runner. New teams, different schemes: 10 new NFL coordinators with questions to answer in 2026 (Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing - Can he coach around the line?  By all accounts, the Lions' offense took a step back last season. Ben Johnson finally left for a head coaching gig, and his replacement, John Morton, was fired following a 2025 season in which he lost playcalling responsibilities midway through.  Of course, they stepped back into ... a top-10 offense. The Lions ended the season seventh in offensive DVOA -- in three seasons under Johnson, they were third, fifth and seventh. By most metrics, the Lions' offense last season was just a hair less productive than the standard they'd set under Johnson.  The offense's retained health writ large is a credit to Dan Campbell, who has a much larger hand in the day-to-day scheming than he presents from the outside. But Campbell alone could not heal the Lions' offensive line woes last season. They lost two veteran starters in center Frank Ragnow and guard Kevin Zeitler after 2024, then released another two veterans in left tackle Taylor Decker and interior lineman Graham Glasgow after age caught up to them in 2025. The Lions' 2026 offensive line will feature only one player from their 2024 group -- and that lone returner, Penei Sewell, is presumably kicking from right tackle to left tackle with Decker's release.  Poor line play stymied the Lions' ground game in 2025. Their rushing success rate of 40.1% was 26th in the NFL; their explosive rush rate of 7.2% was 21st. This was the one area in which the post-Johnson offense was clearly worse than what Johnson established. While coordinating wasn't the key culprit, the Lions could use an offensive coach accustomed to dealing with suboptimal groups up front.  Enter Petzing. His Cardinals offense was almost the polar opposite of the Lions' group last season. Detroit was productive overall but lacked a dynamic running game. The Cardinals' offense never really coalesced in Petzing's three seasons at the helm, but the running game sure wasn't the problem! From 2023 to 2025, the Cardinals were 14th in success rate on designed rushes and fifth in EPA per rush -- their 10.2% explosive rush rate was second only to the Ravens.  Petzing was employing 13 personnel in Arizona before Sean McVay made it cool. The Cardinals led the league in 2023 with 11.5% of their snaps in 13 personnel, then again in 2024 with 15.6% in 13 personnel. While McVay used that package to get under center and run downhill, Petzing would create huge running surfaces for down blocks and pullers behind. This allowed RB James Conner to pick up speed behind the line of scrimmage before steamrollering into contact. It also allowed quarterback Kyler Murray to play from the gun, as the Cardinals' running game hit outside the numbers over and over again.  Such an approach isn't a perfect fit for Detroit, where the tight end room is thin behind Sam LaPorta even with the free agent signing of Tyler Conklin. But it serves as evidence that Petzing will push creative buttons to conjure an effective running game, and he can do it without an elite offensive line. Hjalte Froholdt, Paris Johnson Jr. and Evan Brown are all fine players but not Pro Bowlers.  Petzing's coaching DNA stems largely from Kevin Stefanski, under whom he coached in both Minnesota and Cleveland. While at Minnesota, Petzing also coached with current Lions offensive line coach/running game coordinator Hank Fraley. Stefanski was another multi-TE guy who liked to use pullers to get to the boundary. But Fraley has cut his teeth in Detroit, where their running game is more multiple and their personnel more receiver-heavy. Now, the two coaches reconvene with deeper backgrounds and face a similar problem: How do we reinvigorate the Detroit running game behind a recovering offensive line?  I like Petzing as a problem solver for that particular issue, while Campbell retains his overarching influence on the offensive philosophy and style. Detroit Lions - 2025 rank: 2 | 2024 rank: 7.  It's the Lions, though, who inherit the top spot from the Eagles. I'm not sure we learned anything dramatically new about Detroit's personnel in 2025. Jahmyr Gibbs did end the season as a true lead back, but his workload was only marginally larger than it had been as a rotational player in 2024. Gibbs was able to maintain elite efficiency as a rusher and a receiver despite a struggling offensive line, with the former first-round pick averaging more than 5 yards per carry for the third consecutive season. The only other back to do that on three consecutive 150-plus-carry seasons to begin a career is Nick Chubb. Good company.  While Amon-Ra St. Brown managed 1,401 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in yet another high-end campaign, the star wide receiver will look back and rue a very unexpected problem: drops. After dropping a total of five passes across his first four seasons in the league, St. Brown had five drops in 2025 alone, including one on fourth-and-2 against the Chiefs. St. Brown's track record suggests the issue was an outlier, and even with the drops, he was still wildly productive in 2025.  Jameson Williams solidified his status as one of the league's best No. 2 wideouts, racking up a career-high 1,117 receiving yards while playing a full season for the first time as a pro. And there were some bright spots from rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa, who seemed to only be targeted on jump balls in the end zone. In reality, TeSlaa caught 16 passes for 239 yards and six touchdowns, and he profiles as a potential breakout candidate if there are enough footballs to go around in the offense this season.  The only player Lions fans might want more from is Sam LaPorta, who hasn't been able to build on his impressive rookie campaign. The fourth-year tight end was off to a solid start last season, averaging more yards per route run (2.0) than he did as a rookie (1.8). A herniated disc in his back ended LaPorta's season in early November, though. He is never going to get the sort of target share he needs to produce like Trey McBride or Brock Bowers, but LaPorta is entirely capable of being one of the league's most efficient tight ends on a route-by-route basis.  There are small downgrades on the margins: The Lions don't have as much wide receiver depth as they've had in years past, and Isiah Pacheco doesn't profile to be as productive or explosive as David Montgomery was in Detroit. But this core also validated it could be among the most productive in the NFL, even without Ben Johnson in the mix. NFC North in 2026: Case for/against the Bears, Lions, Packers and Vikings to win division (Detroit Lions:  The case for Detroit winning the division: The Lions took a significant step backward sans Ben Johnson in 2025, but the offensive core remains an explosive whirlwind when Jared Goff is properly protected. Yes, the play-calling was an issue for much of last season, but the biggest problem was an offensive line that blocked like a paper doll for large stretches. The move of Penei Sewell to left tackle, the drafting of first-rounder Blake Miller and the signing of Cade Mays should provide an upgrade. If young guards Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany make strides, the blocking should significantly improve.  When Goff has time and the running game has holes, oh, baby, these Lions can roar. Amon-Ra St. Brown remains an uncontainable weapon who can get open with ease. Jameson Williams is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and has provided more consistency to go along with the game-breaking speed. Isaac TeSlaa showed flashes with some ridiculous grabs and could be a dynamic No. 3 as he gets more snaps. If Sam LaPorta returns healthy, they have a mismatch tight end who can give Goff an outlet.  Then there is Jahmyr Gibbs, who is in line to see the bulk of the carries. After playing tandem with David Montgomery for the last three seasons, Gibbs is in line for a Christian McCaffrey-type workload. The explosive playmaker boasts game-breaking speed whenever he touches the pigskin and is a weapon as a receiver. Increasing his reps will make the Lions offense even more dangerous. If everything breaks right, Gibbs will be an Offensive Player of the Year candidate.  On defense, the Lions added second-rounder Derrick Moore on the edge. If he pairs with Aidan Hutchinson to provide consistent pressure, the Detroit defense can climb out of the doldrums. Give Dan Campbell a solid defense and better blocking on offense, and 2025’s dip will be a blip on the radar. The Lions faced a first-place schedule a year ago and slipped amid O-line issues and defensive injuries. Falling to fourth in the NFC North gives Campbell’s crew the benefit of playing an easier schedule this time around. Detroit can feasibly sprint to the top of the division before closing with three road division games in the last four weeks of the season.  The case against Detroit: Injuries to Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph cloud the defensive operation. Branch’s late-season Achilles injury could keep him out into the season. It’s not clear when (or if) Joseph’s knee will fully heal. Those concerns, along with rollercoaster play from the corner crew, including former first-round pick Terrion Arnold, could lead to year-long issues in the secondary. While the Lions tossed more bodies at finding Hutchinson’s running mate -- from Moore to Payton Turner to DJ Wonnum -- none is a sure thing. The defense could once again be a feast-or-famine proposition in Detroit.  It’s one thing to believe the offensive line issues are fixed on paper, but we won’t truly know until the heat is fully provided. If the inexperienced middle collapses and the rookie right tackle struggles, the offense will be in the same fix as a year ago. Playmakers can’t make plays if the offensive line becomes a sieve.  Then there is the question of yet another new offensive coordinator. Drew Petzing is the fourth OC under Campbell in six seasons. Two -- Anthony Lynn and John Morton -- didn’t make it a full season before having play-calling duties stripped. If Detroit is going to reach its first Super Bowl in franchise history, the defensive backs will have plenty to do with it. And that group might be without Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph for some time.  In December, Branch sustained a torn Achilles against the Cowboys and isn’t expected to be back until deep into the season. Meanwhile, Joseph has a chronic knee injury, leaving Detroit with an uncertain timeline for his return. Given the uncertainty surrounding its two biggest stars, the secondary needs unexpected contributors.  In that vein, the Lions will rely on free-agent signings, safeties Chuck Clark and Christian Izien, who will be seeing ample snaps. Last year, that duo played 603 combined snaps.
