NFL trade deadline: All the winners and losers (Losers - Matthew Stafford:  The Lions should be fine on offense, relatively speaking, because they still have Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay. Detroit is starting to establish the run for the first time in forever, utilizing Kerryon Johnson in an effective manner and creating a balanced offense. It hasn't resulted in Stafford having a ton of passing attempts or fantasy points, but the Lions are better off for it as a team. Unfortunately for Stafford, he just lost his top receiving option in Tate, so the team could land a third-round pick. Not only does that take away a guy he's developed a serious rapport with over the last several years, but it might signal the Lions don't see themselves as a team ready to make any sort of deep run in the NFC just yet. That's fair; there are much better teams right now. But it isn't the move you want to see if you're the starting quarterback of any team. 2018 NFL Trade Deadline Grades (For the Lions: This is a weird little move considering how well they've played in recent weeks. I kind of thought the Lions might try and make a move in the NFC North, but giving up Tate indicates they're less likely to consider themselves contenders? Maybe? They still have Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay as pass catchers, so it's not like Matthew Stafford is bereft of weapons. The Lions were likely going to lose Tate next year anyway if they weren't willing to pay him, so this means they bring in a third-round pick that will be better than any compensatory pick they would have received back and open up targets for other guys.

But let's parse what GM Bob Quinn has done. He added an accomplished run stuffer last week by picking up former Giant Damon Harrison, who could remain with the program beyond this year, for a fifth rounder. Detroit then lost to Seattle on Sunday, dropping to 3-4 and obviously shifting Quinn's perspective. Adding a third rounder for Tate, who's only under contract for eight more games, seems like a perfectly reasonable — dare I say savvy — maneuver given the presence of Marvin Jones and emergent Kenny Golladay in the passing game. NFL Trade Deadline 2018: Winners, Losers and Everything in Between (WE’LL SEE - Philadelphia and Detroit:  I know I’m supposed to have a take here, and the take better be hot, but I just don’t know how to feel about the Golden Tate trade. I want to say both teams won here because the Lions got a third-rounder for a guy they likely wouldn’t re-sign in a year where they may not make the playoffs. And the Eagles landed a top-flight receiver just as they start to heat up to defend their Super Bowl crown.  On the other side, Jacksonville got more for Dante Fowler than Detroit did for Tate. And even if I don’t think the Lions are going to win the NFC North, they’re still just 3–4 in a division where no team has more than four-and-a-half wins. And for a third-round price, the Eagles better be able to sign Tate to an extension or else he’s just a half-season rental. Four years of a low-cost third-round pick is worth more than nine games from Tate for a 3-4 team that is not in a title window. With that said, Tate was the team's leader in receptions and yards. He was one of the better free-agent signings in Lions history, more than earning his keep on the five-year, $31 million contract he signed in 2014.  This trade makes the 2018 Lions team worse, and it makes Stafford's life more difficult down the stretch. The Lions' passing game had rounded into form over the last month, and Detroit played its top three wideouts (Tate, Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay) almost exclusively at the position. Here's why: I'm listing the Lions as an overrated team because their defense is horrible. Brock Osweiler looked like a great quarterback against them! Also, I don't know if any of their wins are overly impressive. Yes, they beat the Patriots, but so did the Jaguars in September. New England was sleepwalking through that game, as the team is wont to do early in the year. The Lions defeated the Packers, who had countless missed field goals from Mason Crosby. They then defeated the Dolphins and Osweiler, and that's not all that great. Meanwhile, they were blown out by the Jets and were the only team to fall to the 49ers, albeit with Jimmy Garoppolo under center.  I think it's clear now that the Lions weren't as good as their 3-3 record indicated. What we've learned from Sunday's Week 8 games (Seattle Seahawks 28, Detroit Lions 14 - 1. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson started off hot, connecting on his first 10 passes to finish the first half completing 11 of 12 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns for a perfect 158.3 passer rating. Wilson didn't cool off coming out of halftime and kept the pressure on in the second half, picking apart a Lions pass defense that entered the game ranked a respectable seventh in the league.  Outside of Wilson finishing the game by completing 14 of 17 passes (82.4 percent) for 248 yards and three touchdowns, another statistic proved just how good he was through four quarters: The seventh-year pro finished Sunday's matchup with a perfect 158.3 passer rating, easily surpassing his previous single-game high rating of 151.1 set on Nov. 17, 2013 against the Minnesota Vikings.  2. The Seahawks entered the game ranked seventh in the league in rushing, and found a perfect matchup to add to the totals against a Lions run defense that ranked 29th (139.3 yards allowed per game) in the league. In the first half, running back Chris Carson paced the Seahawks with 61 yards rushing, as the team totaled 95 yards on 19 carries entering halftime. The Seahawks' offensive line also deserves some kudos here, as Carson found some open running lanes throughout the game because of the front five. Carson finished with 105 yards rushing and a touchdown on 25 carries, as the Seahawks totaled 176 yards on the ground on 42 carries.  The Seahawks' dominance on the ground translated to success in other areas. Wilson thrived on play-action calls with Detroit defenders frozen at the line of scrimmage out of respect for the run game. Additionally, the Seahawks easily won the time of possession by a wide margin of 34:55 to the Lions' 25:05 en route to improving to 4-3 on the season.  3. The Lions looked great on the opening possession, marching down the field on a 13-play, 91-yard drive capped off by quarterback Matthew Stafford's 39-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marvin Jones.  And then the wheels came off, as Detroit quickly fell behind 21-7 before losing 28-14.  While a lot of the credit should go to the Seahawks' ability to control the game on offense, the Lions failed to gain any semblance of momentum even when they had the ball after the opening possession. Detroit had a favorable matchup against a Seattle run defense that ranked 24th in the league, but couldn't get rookie Kerryon Johnson going. Johnson, who exploded for 158 yards in Week 7, managed just 22 yards rushing on eight carries as Detroit totaled a season-low 34 yards on the ground as a team.  And despite a 310-yard passing and two-touchdown performance, Stafford didn't help the cause with a brutal red-zone interception with the Lions down 14 in the fourth quarter. 5 things to care about from Week 8 (Five things I don’t care about - Kerryon Johnson’s slow rushing day: While Chris Cason got the perfect game script for rushing success in Detroit, the young running back on the other side of the field wasn’t as lucky. The Seahawks gained an early lead over the Lions and their lead back, Kerryon Johnson, came away with a team-high eight carries for 22 yards. Don’t sweat it. Johnson and the Lions will find better situations for rushing in future weeks. In fact, we actually came away from Week 8 with a positive note from Johnson’s usage: his work as a receiver. Johnson handled 20 percent of the team targets with Theo Riddick out, ranking third on the team behind Golden Tate and Marvin Jones. He made it count with six catches for 69 yards. Johnson showing two-way versatility a week after he crushed the Dolphins with 158 rushing yards is a great sign for his future. It’s easy to spot Johnson is a good player. Kerryon Johnson was limited to just 22 yards on the ground in a game where the Lions totaled just 34, which is a horrendous number, even for Detroit. The Lions had committed three ugly turnovers. Two of those came from Matthew Stafford, who lost a fumble in Seahawks' territory and also threw an interception after the Lions drove down to Seattle's 4-yard line. Ameer Abdullah also lost a fumble on a kickoff, which the Seahawks eventually turned into a touchdown. 2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (18. Rashan Gary:  Even if Ziggy Ansah is retained, the Lions could use an upgrade with an edge pass-rusher on the other side. In 2018, Gary has 22 tackles with 4.5 for a loss and two sacks. He opened the season by consistently burning Notre Dame's offensive tackles and putting steady hits on quarterback Brandon Wimbush. In 2017, Gary notched 65 tackles with six sacks, one forced fumble and 12 tackles for a loss. The 6-foot-5, 287-pounder is a rare athlete who could turn into a dominant defender. Scouting sources say Gary has high first-round potential if he puts everything together. That could definitely happen during his junior season. Gary has a tremendous skill set with rare athleticism, speed and versatility. His upside is off the charts.  49. DT Isaiah Buggs:  The Lions have neglected the defensive line over the past few years, so they need add a lot of young talent there. Luckily for Detroit, the 2019 NFL Draft looks loaded with talent on the defensive line. Buggs has played well for Alabama in 2018 with 27 tackles with eight tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes batted. Against Texas A&M, he dominated with a huge performance, totaling 3.5 sacks. Alabama is not a program that hits the junior-college ranks hard, but Buggs was an exception, and he surprisingly won a starting spot right away at Alabama. In 2017, Buggs had 51 tackles with four tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. Buggs looks improved after gaining year of experience in the SEC and is taking advantage of a lot of good blocking looks with Raekwon Davis and Quinnen Williams drawing attention next to him. He's compared to as a hybrid of Leonard Floyd and Zach Cunningham, as he can play in coverage and also rush the quarterback effectively on the edge.  49.  Winovich:  The Lions don't really have much of an edge threat outside of Ziggy Ansah, who barely plays.
