Week 4 Predictions

PFN Rolfe (Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions (-4) - The Seattle Seahawks are a very unconvincing 3-0 with tight wins over the Broncos and Patriots before blowing out a Dolphins team that has had its heart ripped out. Facing three poor offenses has seen them sit atop the charts in terms of defensive EPA per game, but that is paired with a 19th-ranked offense.  This week, Seattle faces a Lions team that is hard to figure out. They are a middle-of-the-pack team in terms of EPA and have yet to look completely convincing.  This game could tell us a lot about the trajectories of both teams. The Seahawks haven’t had a true test, and a loss for the Lions would raise serious questions about their credentials.  Detroit is the way I lean here, simply because Seattle’s defensive numbers are inflated by the opponents. Take that away, and you’re talking about two middle-of-the-pack teams.  That tends to lean towards the home team, but I don’t want to lay the four points. SN Iyer (Seahawks at Lions (-4.5, 47 o/u):  The Seahawks have taken care of the Broncos, Patriots, and shorthanded Dolphins, with two of the games being at home. This is a tough Monday night road trip, despite the fact they have recent experience winning in Detroit with Geno Smith. The Lions found their pounding running game again last week to alleviate Jared Goff. SN Bender (Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions (-4):  The Seahawks' defense, which has allowed 14.3 points per game, has been the key to a hot start. The Lions have been dealing with key injuries, including tight end Sam LaPorta (ankle). Detroit has played three one-score games to this point, and this will be another one that tests Dan Campbell's mantra of "grit." CBS Breech (Seattle (3-0) at Detroit (2-1):  First, I'd like to start things off here by congratulating the Seahawks on their 3-0 start. Any time you win your first three games in the NFL, that's an impressive accomplishment, but I have to say, they might be in for a reality check this week. MThe Seahawks have one of the best pass defenses in the NFL heading into Week 4, but it's hard to know if they're actually any good because of who they've played. Let's take a look at the quarterbacks Seattle has faced through the first three weeks.  I'm betting most people didn't even know Tim Boyle played for the Dolphins. If the Seahawks had a win over someone like Andy Dalton, I'd be a little more impressed, but I'm not so impressed by that list. This week, the Seahawks will actually be getting a stiff test by going up against a Lions offense that ranks fourth in the NFL in yards per game.   The Lions might be the most well-rounded team in the NFL as they rank in the top seven in both rushing yards per game and passing yards per game. The scary thing about the Lions rushing attack is that it's hard to know who you need to stop. There are only 13 running backs who have over 200 yards this season, and the Lions have TWO of them (David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs).  As if that's not difficult enough to stop, the Lions also have two receivers who are already over 200 yards (Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams), which is impressive when you consider there are only 14 players who are over that number through three weeks.  It's an offense that keeps you guessing, which could be trouble for the Seahawks, because they haven't really had to do any guessing so far since they've played three teams that struggle to throw the ball.  The Lions haven't beaten the Seahawks since 2012 and I'm going to say that 12-year drought comes to an end on Monday night.  The pick: Lions 31-24 over Seahawks):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-4-picks-ravens-shock-undefeated-bills-raiders-top-browns-falcons-beat-saints-in-thriller/

They got the Denver Broncos and a quarterback playing in his first-ever NFL game in Week 1, then needed overtime to beat the New England Patriots in Week 2 and abused Skylar Thompson and the Tua-less Dolphins last Sunday. Now they have to travel to take on an NFC contender in prime time that will be wearing new sexy black uniforms. Mike MacDonald has immediately boosted this Seahawks defense, as they rank first in defending the pass, second in total defense and fourth in third-down percentage. Remember, Seattle had the worst defense in the NFL over the past three seasons. But, this Lions offense provides a different kind of test compared to the Patriots or a backup/rookie quarterback. DETROIT LIONS - Jared Goff was PFF’s fourth-highest-graded passer on throws of 10-plus yards downfield in 2023, but he has struggled in that area to start this season. Among 32 qualifying quarterbacks, Goff's 43.6 PFF passing grade and 45.6 passer rating on throws of 10-plus yards rank fourth-lowest. NFL Week 4 Preview: Schedule, storylines and matchups to watch (Seattle Seahawks vs Detroit Lions (-4):  Storyline of the game: High-powered matchup between contenders in the NFC. The Seahawks are off to an incredible start in Mike Macdonald’s first season, but this week marks their first real test of the season. Through three weeks, Seattle has played opponents that have a combined three wins total (Denver, New England and Miami) in nine games. While they can only handle the business in front of them, it does raise the question of how they will rise to an occasion like this.  Without a doubt, Detroit is the toughest team yet on Seattle’s schedule. NFL QB Index, Week 4: Josh Allen new No. 1; Sam Darnold, Brock Purdy enter top 10 (15.  Jared Goff (2024 stats: 3 games | 66.0 pct | 723 pass yds | 6.8 ypa | 3 pass TD | 4 INT | 18 rush yds | 0 rush TD | 0 fumbles):  Goff's Week 3 showing won’t stand out in the box score, but let's not overlook it so quickly, because Goff made some clutch plays to salt the game away. His eight-yard scramble late in the fourth quarter on second-and-7 required courage, which Goff showed off as he galloped for a first down. Right before that, he fired a rocket to Amon-Ra St. Brown for a pickup of 18 yards on third-and-12. Goff came through in the clutch to finish a game that saw him connect with St. Brown for an early score, then finish off an excellent four-minute drill with a bit of spice, hitting St. Brown at the perfect time for the receiver to pitch the ball back to Jahmyr Gibbs on a hook-and-ladder for a touchdown late in the first half. RB Index, Week 4: Bears MUST help Caleb Williams with ground attack; top 15 running backs right now (9. Jahmyr Gibbs (2024 stats: 3 games | 40 att | 207 rush yds | 5.2 ypc | 1 rush TD | 11 rec | 76 rec yds | 1 rec TD | 0 fumbles lost):  Detroit's rushing attack was all gas no breaks against Arizona, with both Gibbs and David Montgomery rushing for more than 80 yards -- marking the second time since Gibbs was drafted that that has happened in a game. Gibbs finished with 83 yards on 16 carries, but my favorite thing about his performance was the historic receiving stat line: zero targets, zero receptions, 20 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown. Gibbs scored on a hook-and-ladder play in which Jared Goff threw a short pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who lateraled the ball to Gibbs, allowing the back to sprint to paydirt. Amazing! 13. David Montgomery (2024 stats: 3 games | 51 att | 231 rush yds | 4.5 ypc | 3 rush TDs | 8 rec | 54 rec yds | 0 rec TDs | 0 fumbles lost):  After falling outside of my top 15 last week, Montgomery storms back in, thanks to his 105-yard, one-TD rushing performance against Arizona. That yardage total was his highest in a game since Week 10 of last season. Ranking top 10 RBs as pure rushers: Henry still a force (9. Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions:  While looked at as more of a dual-threat type of back, don't sleep on Gibbs' ability as a pure rusher. After all, the 2023 first-round pick did rush for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie and has maintained that 5.2-yards-per-carry average from 2023 so far this year through three games. When diving in a bit more of his production, you'll be even more impressed with the Lions back. Dating to last season among backs with 200 carries, Gibbs is second in explosive rush rate (12.6%), and that blends well with his physicality, ranking sixth among backs in most yards after contact (3.17). While Gibbs doesn't face as many eight-man boxes as his teammate David Montgomery (17.6% of the time, 21st among qualifying backs), his 4.3 yards per rush against those fronts of eight or more players in the box ranks him third in the league. 6. David Montgomery, Detroit Lions:  The second piece to Detroit's two-headed rushing attack finds his spot in these rankings at No. 6. While Gibbs may be the most explosive of the two backs, Montgomery is the better overall pure rusher. His Rush EPA ranks second among all backs with at least 200 carries since 2023, while Montgomery is also eighth among backs with a 21.6% tackle-avoided-per-rush average and registers 3.08 yards after contact over that stretch (ninth among backs). Furthermore, the 27-year-old doesn't put his team behind the eight-ball when handed the football either. He’s used a play fake on 30.2% of his dropbacks this season, the fourth-highest rate in the NFL.  Over the first two weeks of the season, the Lions QB ranked third in explosive pass rate and seventh in EPA per dropback when using run action.  In Week 3, Goff was still effective with play action on a down-to-down basis, finishing with a 76.9% success rate on run fakes (NFL average: 46.4%). Why your NFL team won, lost in Week 3 (DETROIT LIONS 20, ARIZONA CARDINALS 13 - Why the Lions won: The Lions might have the best one-two-punch running game with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. The two combined for 189 rushing yards on 39 attempts, forcing a combined eight missed tackles. Their ability to create yards after contact shone through, too, with the pair combining for 129 yards after contact.  Why the Cardinals lost: Kyler Murray couldn’t carry on his big performance from a week prior, and the Cardinals' offense was condensed and constricted. NFL Game Recaps: Week 3 (Lions 20, Cardinals 13 - This had all the makings of a shootout. The Lions went down the field and scored a touchdown on their opening drive, with David Montgomery plunging into the end zone. Arizona answered back, with Kyler Murray driving the field and hitting Marvin Harrison Jr. in the end zone to tie the game.  Despite two touchdowns on the first two drives, these teams combined for only 19 points the rest of the way. In fact, the Detroit offense nearly gave back seven when Jared Goff appeared to throw a pick-six, which was negated by the 2-minute warning being whistled. The Lions lucked out, as they scored a touchdown on that drive when Amon-Ra St. Brown lateraled to Jahmyr Gibbs...Both offenses got worse in the second half, inexplicably combining for just three points. It was ugly, with Murray throwing an interception on a deep shot into double coverage, and Goff answering back with his own pick because he didn’t see the linebacker in coverage. There was also an ugly collision when Trey McBride and Brian Branch violently colliding with each other. They weren’t the only injuries, as Sam LaPorta was carted into the locker room and then got hurt again once he returned to action.  The Lions were ahead for most of the game, but they looked like they were going to surrender their lead at the end. However, Goff rebounded with a 17-yard connection to St. Brown on a third-and-11 to seal the victory for Detroit.  The Lions are now 2-1 after bouncing back from last week’s loss to Tampa Bay. However, the offense hasn’t looked quite right. It was puzzling as to why they couldn’t generate any production in the second half versus a poor Arizona defense.  The Cardinals had a terrific performance versus the Rams last week, but couldn’t sustain their success in this game. Detroit Lions - Starting five: LT Taylor Decker, LG Graham Glasgow, C Frank Ragnow, RG Kevin Zeitler, RT Penei Sewell.  All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell spearheads Detroit’s dominant offensive line. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has figured out how to weaponize the former first-round pick in the run game, getting him into space and letting him go to work.  Frank Ragnow might be the NFL’s best center now that Jason Kelce is retired. However, he’s expected to miss time after sustaining a partially torn pectoral muscle in Week 3. While Ragnow wants to keep playing through the injury, Detroit will likely be forced to recalibrate its offensive line. Michael Niese, a 2022 undrafted free agent, is up next at the pivot.  Detroit put its fearsome O-line on display in its Week 1 win over the Rams with a game-winning, eight-play, 70-yard drive in overtime. The Lions ran the ball on seven of their eight OT snaps, bullying their way down the field before David Montgomery ended the game with a one-yard TD run.  While they haven’t looked quite that dominant since, Detroit’s offensive line remains the best front five in the league.
