They've shown no indication of being willing to do anything but split the work between multiple backs, so Kerryon Johnson should be heavily involved. Ranking the NFL's offenses from worst to first (18. Can Halapoulivaati Vaitai be this team’s right tackle? Who fills the spot at right guard, Oday Aboushi or rookie Jonah Jackson? If Stafford can stay healthy, the team has weapons, including Kenny Golladay and second-round pick D’Andre Swift, who can be an asset in the passing game. Fifth-round pick Quintez Cephus is also a player to watch at the WR spot. D’ANDRE SWIFT, DETROIT LIONS: Swift should have no issue taking the bulk of the touches away from 2018 second-rounder Kerryon Johnson, as injuries have zapped his effectiveness. Johnson has suffered knee injuries that forced him to miss extensive time in each of the past two seasons and has recurring shoulder problems, as well. He went from a 77.9 rushing grade in 2018 and 5.4 yards per carry to a 68.2 rushing grade last season and 3.6 yards per carry. The question with Swift will be how good his run blocking is. Projecting all 32 NFL starting lineups ahead of the 2020 season (Battle to watch: Da’Shawn Hand vs. Nick Williams at defensive tackle - Danny Shelton should be the clear-cut starter at nose tackle heading into next season for Detroit, but the next two in line for snaps on the defensive interior should be Hand and Williams. Both guys figure to see plenty of playing time in a rotational capacity, but I like Hand to carve out the larger role in 2019. He got off to a tremendous start to his career as a rookie in 2018, earning an 85.9 overall grade and contributing as both a run defender and a pass rusher. Hand saw his role shrink in 2019 down to just over 100 snaps, but if he can put up a similar performance to what we saw from him as a rookie, the Lions' defensive line will be in good shape.  Name to watch: Jahlani Tavai.  Hopefully for the Lions' sake, the move to Detroit and former coach Matt Patricia’s defense goes smoother for Jamie Collins than his last departure from New England. If so, he’ll add a dynamic blitzing/coverage threat that the Lions’ linebacking corps needed. Jarrad Davis should begin the season seeing more snaps than Tavai, but he has shown little thus far to feel confident in his progression as an NFL starter, with grades of 52.8, 51.0 and 40.4 in his first three seasons. Tavai, meanwhile, put up an overall grade of 60.5 as a rookie last season on nearly 600 snaps — not perfect but a decent start to his career. Analyzing 10 dark horse NFL MVP candidates in 2020 (QB Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions:  When talking of the top quarterbacks in the game, Mathew Stafford is always an afterthought. A higher upside than Kirk Cousins, but lower than Rodgers, the former first overall pick is somehow in the middle of all pocket passers looking to become the next big name.  The Lions are in for a rude awakening this season in a do or die season for Matt Patrica. The one positive for the roster will be if their franchise quarterback can come back and be healthy for a full 16-game season. Before missing games due to back and hip injuries, he was on pace for 4,998 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Lions star also was building chemistry with first-rounder T.J. Hockenson and shifty slot target Danny Amendola.  Detroit has quality weapons in Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones as the top options. A healthy Kerryon Johnson and D’Andre Swift should balance the offense and give Stafford more weapons. If the 32-year-old quarterback can stay on his feet, expect monster numbers in the Motor City. Keep in mind the last time Stafford missed eight games, he bounced back and took home Comeback Player of the Year honors. Comparing the 2021 running back class to this year’s top prospects (D’Andre Swift (5’8″, 212 pounds):  D’Andre Swift has been on the radar of the draft community for quite some time and for good reason. He is an explosive game-changer, who has elite footwork and impressive balance. In 2019, he had 196 carries for 1,218 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Believe it or not, these stats indicate a down year for Swift.  It’s about time the Lions gave Matthew Stafford an electric play-maker in the backfield. It won’t be long before Swift assumes the starting running back role over Kerryon Johnson, and once he does, watch out.  For my money, Swift was the best running back in the 2020 draft. Barnwell ranks the worst NFL offseasons: Why the Texans and Pats are at the bottom (29. Detroit Lions - What went right: The Lions went all-in on rebuilding their oft-frustrating secondary, trading cornerback Darius Slay and replacing him by signing Desmond Trufant and drafting Jeff Okudah at No. 3 overall. On paper, the trio of Okudah, Trufant and Justin Coleman would rank as one of the best cornerback combinations in the league. Trading for safety Duron Harmon completed the defensive back makeover. They will miss Slay, but even with him on the field last season, they allowed a passer rating of 97.4, which would have been the eighth-worst mark in the league.  What went wrong: Coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn elected to rebuild most of their defense by acquiring the players Bill Belichick didn't want to keep, a move that typically turns out poorly for other teams. Jamie Collins' three-year, $30 million deal seemed particularly onerous for a linebacker who was a mess outside of New England during his run with Cleveland. The Lions will now start four former Pats on defense in Collins, Harmon, Trey Flowers and Danny Shelton. They look perilously thin along the defensive line, and while Belichick has been able to mold middling players into contributors across his front seven, Patricia's players have generally been better elsewhere than they were playing for him in Detroit. The Lions also weren't able to parlay the No. 3 draft pick into a bidding war between the Chargers and Dolphins, forcing them to stay put. Okudah should be an impact cornerback, and I don't have any issue with them drafting him, but this team could have sorely used an extra first-round pick. Detroit used its second-round pick on running back D'Andre Swift, and while he is a talented player, this isn't a roster that can afford to use two second-round picks on running backs across three years. You could argue Kerryon Johnson is a sunk cost, but the Lions could have addressed running back with one of a number of veterans at minimal cost.  Instead, Detroit hit free agency yet again, and its deals were questionable. Trufant hasn't lived up to expectations over the past three seasons. The five-year, $45 million deal it handed Halapoulivaati Vaitai pays the former Eagles swing tackle like he is an upper-echelon starter. It sure looks reminiscent of the big deal that Detroit handed former starting right tackle Rick Wagner, which didn't work out.  What they could have done differently: Resisted the urge to go after as many former Patriots as possible. The Collins deal is a mess, and under Belichick, the Patriots have exhibited the ability to develop players such as Shelton and Harmon into useful contributors. Patricia and Quinn are trying to buy them instead. If the Lions couldn't trade down in the first round, they should have used their second-rounder on a position that's tougher to fill than halfback.  What's left to do: Add defensive line help. Detroit signed Nick Williams to a two-year deal after he impressed with the Bears in his first significant stretch of pro action as a 29-year-old, but it needs another pass-rusher to mix in on a rotational basis. I'd love to see the Lions sign Jadeveon Clowney, but more realistically, this would be a landing spot for somebody like Jabaal Sheard on the edge or Marcell Dareus on the interior. Of those listed, only one pass-catcher recorded fewer receiving yards than Jones' 779 -- Chargers tight end Hunter Henry, listed seventh with 652 yards -- but most of the guys on this list also didn't have to play half a season without their starting quarterback. Jones' numbers illustrate one of two scenarios: He's either a receiver who can't get open, or he was running routes for subpar quarterbacks. The fact that Lions QB Matthew Stafford sat out the second half of 2019 gives us a hint.  Jones, who missed three games himself in 2019, has an interesting week-by-week stat line, with the most peculiar game coming in Week 12 against Washington, with Jeff Driskel under center. Jones was targeted 11 times and caught just five of those passes; those numbers indicate either a receiver having a bad outing or a quarterback giving a receiver few chances to make a play. Jones' expected catch rate that date was 44.1 percent and he caught 45.5 percent of his targets, meaning he performed slightly better than expectation. He was afforded just 1.3 yards of separation on average when targeted in that game and battled through a tight window on 54.5 percent of targets. This isn't the receiver's fault.  Jones overcame plenty -- including the second-highest tight-window percentage (29.7) of any of these pass-catchers -- to post our fourth and final double-digit positive catch-rate difference of 2019 (among receivers). Most improved pass-rushing units in the NFL this offseason (3. DETROIT LIONS - Key Additions: EDGE Julian Okwara, LB Jamie Collins, DI Danny Shelton.  Key Losses: EDGE Devon Kennard, DI A’Shawn Robinson, DI Damon Harrison, DI Mike Daniels.  The Lions’ addition of Trey Flowers last offseason and their subsequent lack of any consistent pass rush in 2019 goes to show that one talented pass rusher is not going to change a defense. Flowers played well, generating a pass-rushing grade of 78.8 with 62 total pressures in a full season of action, but the Lions’ pressure rate as a team of 29.2% ranked just 30th among all 32 NFL defenses.  The addition of Okwara in place of Kennard should give a boost to the pass rush, giving the Lions two real threats off the edge moving forward. It’s surprising that Okwara fell to the third round given the lack of high-end options in this class and considering Okwara’s physical traits, which NFL teams often covet. He’s a player who landed at No. 10 on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List heading into the 2019 college season, reportedly clocking at 21 miles per hour while also being able to put up 27 bench reps at the NFL Combine despite 34-plus inch arms. Okwara backed up that physical ability with pass-rushing grades of 85.0 or higher in both 2018 and 2019. It may not be immediate, but I’d bet on him panning out as an effective pass rusher.  In free agency, the Lions brought in several players from the Patriots who could help their pass rush, though they wouldn’t be the first players you’d think of. Collins has been one of the best blitzing off-ball linebackers in the NFL for much of his career. He showed it in New England before being traded to the Cleveland Browns, and he showed it again last season with the Patriots as one of just two linebackers with 30 or more quarterback pressures. His pass-rushing grade of 76.8 was a top-five mark at the position.  Shelton, meanwhile, has graded out better as a run defender than pass rusher every season of his career… until last season. His 73.3. pass-rushing grade in 2019 was the highest of his career. Ranking OROY hopefuls, 1-12 (7. D'Andre Swift, RB, Lions (+1800):  Swift didn't do it for me. Just didn't. I thought he was mostly the product of an incredibly bulldozing offensive line at Georgia -- tackles Andrew Thomas and Isaiah Wilson went in Round 1 and left guard Solomon Kindley was picked in Round 4. Great, stocky build and flashes of stellar cutting ability, but I didn't see a particularly elusive back, and his contact balance seemed average.  Anyway, he went near the top of Round 2, and he does possess NFL-ready pass-catching ability, which will help his statistical output as a rookie. Kerryon Johnson was picked in Round 2 in 2018 but has only appeared in 14 games in two seasons and averaged 3.6 yards per tote in 2019. There's a clear path for Swift to get the bulk of the carries in Detroit.  When Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was in Seattle, the Seahawks averaged finishing ninth in rushing attempts per season. Detroit wants to run it. Good news for Swift's OROY candidacy. So, as much as Lions head coach Matt Patricia has made some questionable decisions about defensive backfield talent in recent years (we hope the Seahawks sent him a floral arrangement for the Quandre Diggs trade), the addition of Okudah to Detroit's secondary is a slam-dunk. He's the best and most aggressive man coverage cornerback in this class, and only the Patriots played more man coverage than did the Lions in 2019.  Julian Okwara, EDGE, Detroit Lions:  The Lions didn't get much out of their edge defenders in 2019, which is one reason they stole Notre Dame's Okwara with the 67th overall pick in the third round. Detroit Lions – Ohio State CB Jeffrey Okudah at No. 3:  Before the 2020 NFL Draft, only two cornerbacks — Shawn Springs and Bruce Pickens — had ever been selected in the top three in NFL history. Jeffrey Okudah became the third. Cornerback is historically a position that offers depth, and in 2020, this was no different, as one of the deepest classes in years came into the fold. That depth dictates that the Lions could have addressed this position later on while adding talent elsewhere at three.  That said, Okudah was a prospect of a similar caliber to his draft position. His combination of high-floor and high-upside traits made him one of the few blue-chip prospects in the class, and given the Lions’ dire need at cornerback, Okudah was very much worth the third overall pick.
