How many first-round picks are Watt, Tua and Parsons worth? Barnwell's NFL trade tiers for all 32 teams (Detroit Lions - Two first-round picks and more: Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, OT Penei Sewell. Detroit's two homegrown building blocks along the line of scrimmage are both needle-movers at their respective positions. Sewell is an elite two-way tackle, and while Lane Johnson is a better pass blocker, Sewell's age (24) and health (he has missed just one game as a pro) make him the far more valuable player from this perspective. I could see an argument to push him into the range of three first-round picks, if only because he appears to be four years into a Hall of Fame career.  Hutchinson would have been in that tier if he had stayed healthy and continued producing the way he did last season before suffering a broken leg. The 2022 second overall pick had 7.5 sacks and 17 knockdowns in 4½ games before his season-ending injury. He plays a more valuable position than Sewell, and while they're both 24, he is still on his rookie deal. I'd expect that to change shortly. The Hutchinson we saw before the injury had been a Defensive Player of the Year-caliber edge rusher for more than a year. As long as he gets back to that level, he is going to remain incredibly valuable. .One first-round pick and more: RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, S Brian Branch. Two members of Detroit's wildly successful 2023 draft class, Gibbs and Branch have overcome concerns about their positional value to create an outsized impact. Gibbs has been devastating as a runner between the tackles and a threat to make defenders look foolish at the second level; the only reason he doesn't have more catches and receiving yards is the sheer quantity of playmakers in Detroit's offense. Branch's versatility and impact as a run defender, tackler, blitzer and space eraser have been essential for a team that blitzes as much as any in the league. Both are due for extensions.  I can poke some holes in their games, too. Gibbs has been the featured back for only a brief spell last season while David Montgomery was injured. Branch has the ability to create takeaways and break up passes, but teams have been able to throw on him in coverage when they isolate him in space. Even acknowledging those concerns, these are two of the most exciting young players in the NFL, and they're still on team-friendly contracts.  St. Brown is starting a four-year, $120 million extension, which seems entirely fair now and could look like a bargain very soon. But there are teams that would be hesitant to pay that much for a guy who primarily works out of the slot. After three years at a star level, it seems foolish to not regard him as a great wide receiver, full stop. He has been effective lining up outside on a route-by-route basis, has a great feel for coverage, might have the best hands in the league in tight quarters and is enough of an athlete to create after the catch.  One first-round pick: QB Jared Goff, CB Terrion Arnold, S Kerby Joseph. Would the Lions get more for Goff? We're only a few years removed from the Rams giving up on him and winning a Super Bowl after doing so. While he has done excellent work to rebuild his career in Detroit, some of the credit for those improvements will likely go to Ben Johnson, his now-departed coordinator. Goff has plenty of fans, and he can be nearly unstoppable when he gets hot, but there still are whispers about his struggles against pressure and organizations that would be nervous about paying him $53 million per season.  Missing out: A handful of players come close. TE Sam LaPorta was excellent as a rookie, but tight end is low on the list of positions that teams target with first-round picks. DT Alim McNeill was having a breakout season when he signed a four-year, $97 million deal last October, but he tore his ACL late in the season and might not be ready to start the 2025 campaign on the active roster. LB Jack Campbell, a first-round pick in 2023, plays a position the league doesn't typically value at that level. While he's a solid player, I'm not sure there would be a ton of interest in him if the Lions were asking to get back their Round 1 pick.  The 2024 on-field version of WR Jameson Williams was worth a first-round pick, especially in a speed-starved market where WR3 types such as Dyami Brown and Tutu Atwell were able to command $10 million per season. With a significant ACL tear and a gambling suspension in the recent past, though, teams likely would be wary of committing a first-round pick to acquire him. Notable graduated players: Edge Aidan Hutchinson, LB Jack Campbell  The Lions drop a couple of spots because Hutchinson has aged out of our list, but they still have a ton of blue-chip talent.  Detroit will probably drop further in 2026, because a lot of these players are 24 years old. That starts with Sewell, who was a first-team All-Pro for two straight seasons. Williams and LaPorta are also both 24, combining for over 1,700 receiving yards a season ago. The most notable 24-year-old on defense is first-team All-Pro Joseph, who had nine interceptions in 2024.  However, some of the Detroit blue chips will still count for this list a year from now. Gibbs, 23, was second in the NFL in FTN Fantasy's rushing DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement) metric with 20 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns. Safety/slot defender Branch is also 23, while Arnold is 22.  The Lions also have their rookies. Inside Training Camp: Highlights, buzz from Tuesday, July 29 (Have Lions located Ragnow's replacement?
Frank Ragnow's retirement forced the Lions to get creative with their starting offensive line entering this season.  Their first choice: Move Graham Glasgow from guard to center. So far, so good.  Coach Dan Campbell told reporters Tuesday the change is working well for the Lions offense, which has looked promising with Glasgow manning the starting pivot.  "We just finished two days with Graham back at center in pads, and it's looked pretty good," Campbell said. "It's looked pretty dang good. I think every day that it looks pretty dang good, it gets a little clearer."  Shifting Glasgow to center required replacing him at guard, for which Detroit prepared by selecting Georgia lineman Tate Ratledge in the second round of April's draft. Lions fans will have to wait a week to see Ratledge (and first-round defensive tackle Tyleik Williams) in game action, though, as Campbell revealed Detroit will hold their first two picks out of action in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers.  "We've talked about it as a staff and it's like 'why don't we just wait, maybe play them in Atlanta (on Aug. 8)?' " Campbell said, per the Detroit Free Press. "So we'll hold tight, make sure they get plenty of reps out here (in practice)."  Campbell's decision to sit Williams and Ratledge suggests his staff is preparing for both rookies to play important roles in Detroit's 2025 campaign. 2025 NFL Protector of the Year candidates: Top 10 offensive linemen who could win league's new award (1. Penei Sewell:  No matter who you ask, most everyone will agree Sewell is the favorite to take home the first Protector of the Year award. Billed as a generational talent coming out of Oregon, Sewell has lived up to expectations so far, completing the switch to right tackle and making such a difference for Detroit's high-powered offense last season that he garnered some fringe consideration for Offensive Player of the Year. With an award now in place to properly recognize linemen, Sewell will bring a sterling reputation to the race and should own a place near the front of the pack in 2025. Inside Training Camp: Highlights, buzz from Monday (Lions fans: Pay that man his money - Alex Anzalone's efforts to get paid haven't prompted action from the Lions, so their fans took it upon themselves to voice their desires at the start of Monday's camp session.  Anzalone returned to practice to fan chants of "pay the man," per NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, who is spending Monday at Lions camp alongside NFL Network's Stacey Dales and Cynthia Frelund for Inside Training Camp.  Anzalone, 31, is entering the final year of his contract, a deal that is scheduled to pay the linebacker a base salary of $6 million but does not include any guaranteed salary. Back Together Weekend: Highlights, buzz from Saturday's NFL training camps (Jameson emerging as leader on Lions' offense. If the wide receiver contract extensions that were handed out this offseason were any indication, it's a massive 2025 season for Jameson Williams in Detroit.  Williams, 24, enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2024, with 58 catches for 1,001 yards (17.3-yard average) and seven touchdown catches, adding one on the ground. His five regular-season catches of 50-plus yards led the NFL, and Williams also had two TDs on two touches in the Lions' playoff loss to the Commanders.  This was a welcomed development after his first two NFL seasons, with Williams slowed by injury, immaturity and inconsistency. He was suspended six games for gambling in 2023 and two more last season for PEDs.  But Williams is now eligible to receive a multiyear extension from the Lions, and another big season could convince them he's too valuable not to lock up long term. Lions head coach Dan Campbell told NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero on Saturday that he's been impressed with Williams' personal development early in Lions camp.  "Growth. Growth and development," Campbell said. "He's going on Year 4, and what you see is a much more polished player, man. A much more mature player. I mean, he's leading the young guys now."  Campbell also praised Williams' strides on the field.  "His route development is so much better -- the detail, the explosiveness, the body demeanor," Campbell said. 1 Storyline To Watch for All 32 Teams in NFL Training Camp, Including QB Battles and Contract Standoffs (Detroit Lions - Life After the Coordinator Exodus.  After a 15-win season and back-to-back NFC North titles, the Lions face a rare challenge for a contender: replacing both coordinators. Johnson and Glenn earned head coaching jobs this offseason after elevating Detroit’s offense and defense, and they took several assistants with them. It’s up to John Morton and Kelvin Sheppard to keep things rolling.  Sheppard, promoted from linebackers coach, is well-liked in the building and understands Dan Campbell’s vision. But he’s never called plays at the NFL level, and Glenn was excellent at making adjustments, especially during injury-plagued stretches. Sheppard’s ability to lead the unit through similar adversity remains a logical question mark.  Morton has experience with Jared Goff and was a senior offensive assistant in Detroit in 2022, but he hasn’t called plays full-time in years. Johnson’s ability to create mismatches and stay one step ahead of defenses turned Detroit’s offense into a machine, finishing first in PFSN’s Offense+ metric. Morton inherits a loaded group but must prove he can be just as creative and efficient.  The good news is that both coordinators are familiar with Campbell and his culture. That continuity helps, but replicating last year’s coaching success won’t be easy. Top defenders in PFF's advanced coverage grading by role (Highest-graded safeties in deep zone coverage - Justin Reid, New Orleans Saints, Amani Hooker, Tennessee Titans, Kerby Joseph, Detroit Lions.  Safeties have a variety of roles in a coverage scheme, but they differ in deep zone coverages from cornerbacks in several ways. They have fewer opportunities for one-on-one interactions and often have to cover multiple receivers on a play. These players typically are playing the middle of the field in either a Cover 1 or Cover 3 scheme, the inside quarter of a Cover 4 scheme or the deep half in a Cover 2 scheme.  One significant reason that the Kansas City Chiefs' secondary was so good over the past three years is Reid. He ranks first in this category and third in grade per deep-zone coverage snap. He is excellent at making the rest of the defense right and was consistently tight on opposing receivers in deep zones this past season. He will feature for the Saints in 2025.  Hooker isn’t a household name, but he’s been a solid safety for several years. In 2024, he notched career highs in interceptions and pass breakups, preventing separation and reading routes and the eyes of the quarterback at a high level.  Joseph also enjoyed a career year in 2024 — and it was much more than just his league-leading nine interceptions.
