4 NFL post-June 1 trades to watch for (Anthony Richardson - Proposed Suitors: Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions.  Richardson has handled the situation professionally throughout the offseason. Despite ongoing trade speculation involving the Indianapolis Colts, he has remained engaged and participated in team activities. His character and leadership have consistently earned praise dating back to the 2023 NFL Draft process.  The Packers signed veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor, but head coach Matt LaFleur may still have interest in developing a younger, high-upside project. Ranking the 3 Most Realistic Chargers Trades That Could Still Happen This Offseason (2. Bud Dupree, edge rusher:  Bud Dupree has been a solid veteran presence in the Chargers edge rusher room over the past two seasons. He still is a reliable run defender and edge setter but may be facing a challenge from young blood entering the room.  The Chargers have a clear pecking order after drafting Miami edge rusher Akheem Mesidor in the first round of the 2026 draft. The top of the room includes Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, and Mesidor.  Following the initial three Dupree is set to be the fourth edge rusher but could face a challenge for a spot by second-year edge rusher Kyle Kennard, whom Khalil Mack mentioned looks focused and hungry and undrafted free agent Nadame Tucker who was second in the country in 2025 in sack production under Chris O'Leary at Western Michigan.  The Chargers will have to decide if they are keeping four or five edge rushers and which will be playing special teams. If the young edge rushers can stake a claim on special teams, Dupree could be the odd man out but could still be a valuable veteran addition to another roster.  Potential landing spots for Bud Dupree - Detroit Lions:  The Lions have had a rough time dealing with injuries over the past few seasons in their edge rusher room. This off-season they have star Aidan Hutchinson and some very young players behind him. Third-Year Second-Round NFL Draft Busts on Extremely Thin Ice (Ennis Rakestraw Jr., CB, Detroit Lions:  Ennis Rakestraw Jr. spent his rookie campaign with the Detroit Lions learning behind the scenes. The lack of a clear-cut role in their secondary, paired with injuries, kept him on the bench. Rakestraw then suffered an offseason shoulder injury that completely wiped out his sophomore year.  Rakestraw will arrive at Lions training camp this summer as a third-year pro who has totaled 46 career defensive snaps. He'll likely compete for a rotational role at boundary cornerback behind starters D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, and rookie Keith Abney II is also around. Detroit Lions - Best: Replenishing the offensive line. Detroit's line wasn't up to its usual standards in 2025. The Lions finished 20th in run block win rate and 31st in pass block win rate. Their success rate on run plays fell from sixth in 2023 and 2024 to 25th in 2025. And given Jared Goff's large on/off splits with regard to pressure -- Goff ranks third in the NFL in EPA per play when unpressured over the past three years but 27th in the league when pressured -- the Lions need to make sure they're running the ball effectively and staying out of obvious passing situations to protect their quarterback.  Facing a pending cap crunch with extensions for several young starters, general manager Brad Holmes did pretty well. The Lions cut veteran Taylor Decker and moved Penei Sewell to left tackle, where he excelled as a rookie while Decker was injured. Sewell was an elite left tackle prospect coming out of Oregon and should do just fine on Goff's blind side. He'll be replaced on the right side by first-round pick Blake Miller, whose experience as a four-year starter at Clemson should make the 22-year-old an immediate contributor at the pro level.  The Lions also cut Graham Glasgow at center and replaced him with Panthers center Cade Mays, who spent several years as Carolina's backup interior lineman before doing solid work in pass protection as the team's primary center for most of 2025. It would have been nice to see the Lions add more at guard besides 49ers lineman Ben Bartch, who wasn't a regular during his time in San Francisco, but Lions fans will hope Holmes did enough to get the Lions back on track up front.  Worst: Continuing to give away draft picks while trading up. After years of building the roster without needing to worry too much about cash or cap constraints, Holmes is facing an evolution. Having too many young players to pay is a nice problem to have, but the Lions have paid draftees such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sewell and Aidan Hutchinson. This offseason, Jahmyr Gibbs, Brian Branch, Sam LaPorta and Jack Campbell all became eligible for extensions, with the latter signing a four-year deal this past week.  Holmes has had to be relatively conservative in free agency to account for those deals, moving on from veterans such as Decker, Glasgow and David Montgomery while also letting the likes of Al-Quadin Muhammad and Amik Robertson leave for modest deals elsewhere. The only player who landed anything larger than a one-year deal from Holmes in free agency this year was Mays. Given the raises Detroit's young players are going to land, you can understand why Detroit is cutting back on free agent additions.  Holmes has to surround those newly expensive players with cost-controlled young talent to make the roster work, though, and he's leaning too heavily into trading up. The Lions already came into this draft without a third-round pick, having sent two third-rounders to the Jaguars to move up and get Isaac TeSlaa on Day 2 a year ago. TeSlaa showed some promise as a rookie, but he projected (and still projects) to be Detroit's third wide receiver. The Lions moved up for Tate Ratledge in 2025, sent a future third-rounder to the Jets for the right to take Giovanni Manu in the fourth round in 2024 and dealt more future draft capital to land Sione Vaki and Miles Frazier.  The Lions continued to stay aggressive in 2026. They traded away a fourth-round pick to move up six spots in the second round for edge rusher Derrick Moore, then shipped off a sixth-rounder to move up 13 spots in the fifth round (receiver Kendrick Law). And per video released by the Ravens, we know Detroit initially tried to trade up in Round 1, offering the Ravens their fourth-round pick and a 2027 third-round selection to move up from No. 17 to No. 14 before eventually changing course.  The issue here isn't targeting players the Lions want. They needed an offensive lineman in the first round. They've needed help on the edge for years and moved up to grab one in Round 2. Of course, that's also the downside of taking players at less premium positions in 2023. Holmes and the Lions should be very happy about landing excellent players at running back (Gibbs), tight end (LaPorta), linebacker (Campbell) and safety (Branch), but it's easier to fill those positions in the later rounds and free agency than it is to find difference-makers on the edge or offensive line.  At some point, though, the Lions have to be more conservative and trust that players are going to fall to them. They have to consider trading down to amass more selections, something Holmes hasn't done since trading down from No. 6 to No. 12 in the 2023 draft as part of the deal that landed him Gibbs and LaPorta. Trading up here and there is reasonable enough, and the Lions eventually decided against what would have been their biggest trade up in Round 1, but they've repeatedly pushed the move-up button over the past three drafts.  As good as their young core is, the Lions have had to turn to players who are bouncing around the league in key roles more often that they would like. Giving away those middle-round picks forced them to turn to players such as Kindle Vildor, Ben Niemann and Anthony Firkser for significant snaps. 12 NFL rookies who NEED to succeed in Year 1: Heat is on Carnell Tate, Jadarian Price, Antonio Williams (Blake Miller Detroit Lions - Round 1, No. 17 overall.  After stumbling to a 3-13-1 mark in Dan Campbell’s debut campaign, Detroit rapidly ascended over the next three seasons, going 9-8, 12-5 and 15-2. But the trend line sharply reversed in 2025, with the Lions missing the playoffs at 9-8. That regression could be attributed to a number of factors, but it’s hard not to home in on the offensive line. Detroit’s calling card during the franchise’s inspiring rise, the O-line fell off in 2025, causing GM Brad Holmes to refashion the unit this offseason. Penei Sewell is the only OL starter remaining from the back-to-back NFC North championship teams of 2023 and ’24, though in the wake of Taylor Decker’s release, the first-team All-Pro right tackle is poised to move back to his college position on the blind side. Who’ll fill Sewell’s spot at RT? Larry Borom was signed as a veteran Band-Aid, but then the Lions spent their first-round pick on a real solution. Having started every single Clemson game over the past four seasons, Miller possesses the kind of experience that could portend a smooth transition into the NFL. Instead, the offense ranked fifth in yards and points after being second and first, respectively, under Johnson, while the defense remained mediocre, sitting 18th.   Goff continued putting up huge numbers with 4,564 yards and 34 touchdowns, but saw his EPA drop from +144.0 in 2024 to +79.1, still checking in fifth, however. Albert Breer’s Mailbag: The NFL’s Division Most Up for Grabs in 2026 (NFC North - From James Jefferson (@J16James): Who wins the NFC North next season?  James, that division remains perhaps the NFL’s most wide open from year to year and I could see any of the four winning it. The one team that would surprise most, Minnesota, won 14 games in 2024. But if I had to pick now, I might actually go with the Lions.  The first reason is the schedule. They could, maybe should, go into their Week 6 bye at 4–1, and don’t have any sort of murderous stretch after that to sink their momentum.  The second reason is because so many things went wrong last year that I think will correct themselves. With Cade Mays and Blake Miller coming in, and Tate Ratledge in his second year, there’s promise that the line that set the tone for Detroit for its rise to prominence will bounce back. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing will bring back the creativity the team missed last year with Ben Johnson gone. Ranking top 8 candidates (7. Detroit Lions:  It was somewhat lost in Detroit’s collapse late last year, but the Lions started 5-2 and looked like they were bound for a third straight playoff appearance. They are now tied for the NFL’s fourth-longest active streak of consecutive winning seasons (four).  I’m expecting the bad taste in their mouths from the way last season ended to fuel a heightened sense of urgency in a prideful group. Yes, the NFC North remains tough, but overall, the Lions’ schedule is one of the most favorable in the league, with only two true road games against teams that won a playoff game last season. $.05 After Memorial Day Weekend ($.02--Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell signed a four-year contract extension that will keep the first-team All-Pro in Detroit through at least the 2030 season. It’s a deal worth $81 million, or $20.25 million per season. That figure is reflective of an interesting off-ball linebacker market and also one of the most egregious snafus in the NFL today.   One of the reasons Detroit extended Campbell now is due to the fact the team did not pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. A first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Campbell had to have that fifth-year option exercised by the Lions before May 1st. Detroit wisely declined to pick it up, but not because of any dissatisfaction with Campbell or lack of desire ot keep him long-term. It was all about the antiquated, incomplete language of the fifth-year options.  Campbell plays linebacker and plays it quite well. But he’s not a pass-rushing linebacker like Micah Parsons or T.J. Watt or Will Anderson, who signed a three-year, $150 million extension in April. Despite the obvious disparity and divergence in their positions and usage, the NFL still considers all “linebackers” as the same, at least contractually.  The success Campbell had in his first three seasons escalated his fifth-year option, regardless of what position he plays. Being named a first-team All-Pro, as he earned in 2025, elevated Campbell’s option into the franchise tag value for all linebackers. Again, because all LBs are lumped together, that value for Campbell would have exceeded $21.9 million--an astronomical number for an off-ball backer. No off-ball LB has ever made that kind of money.   Campbell came relatively close with his $20.25 million, but it’s still over $1.5 million per year less. That’s not an insignificant amount of money for a team like the Lions, who must still extend star RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Pro Bowl TE Sam LaPorta and Pro Bowl S Brian Branch in the coming months (if they choose).  The fact that the NFL considers Campbell, or Fred Warner or Devin Lloyd or Roquan Smith, to be the same position as Anderson or Maxx Crosby or Campbell’s Detroit teammate, Aidan Hutchinson, remains one of the most ludicrous oversights by the league and the NFLPA. NFC North: QB buzz, plus underrated, surprising roster moves (Detroit Lions - Mike Clay's 2026 projected win total: 12.  Odds to win NFC North: +185.  Strength of schedule: Sixth-easiest schedule in NFL  Most surprising move of the offseason - Under GM Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell, the identity of the Lions has been built on grit and loyalty. So, it was surprising to see the organization part ways with veteran offensive tackle Taylor Decker, who was the team's longest-tenured player, as well as releasing offensive lineman Graham Glasgow in March to save $5.6 million against the salary cap. Veteran running back David Montgomery was also traded to the Houston Texans in exchange for O-lineman Juice Scruggs, a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick. These moves were surprising because Decker, Glasgow and Montgomery all played key roles on offense over the past few seasons.  The offseason moves have helped the QB position.  After failing to reach the postseason for the first time since 2022, the Lions used this offseason to prioritize improving the offensive line. Detroit drafted Clemson OT Blake Miller with the 17th pick while adding three new linemen in free agency. They signed former Panthers center Cade Mays to a three-year deal, ex-Dolphins lineman Larry Borom and free agent guard Ben Bartch to beef up the unit. Improved pass protection is key for quarterback Jared Goff, who had a 62-point drop-off in Total QBR when he was pressured (14) compared to not pressured (76), per ESPN Research. Only San Francisco backup Mac Jones (65-point drop-off) was affected more.  Most underrated move - The signing of unrestricted free agent running back Isiah Pacheco. Pacheco is viewed as a replacement for Montgomery, who was traded to Houston, and he's confident that his violent running style will complement Jahmyr Gibbs' speed in the backfield.  He is hopeful that the move to Detroit will also spark a new beginning for a career that has gotten off track. Last season, he finished with a disappointing 462 rushing yards and two total touchdowns in 13 games but appears to be motivated by the new situation.  Holmes was focused on adding players this offseason, such as Pacheco, to reestablish Detroit's blue-collar identity because "the urgency needed to be more pushed up on everything" after missing the postseason, he said during the NFL draft.  Move that will have the biggest impact on next season - Hiring Petzing as offensive coordinator. Petzing is replacing John Morton, who was fired after one season in the role. So far, Petzing has earned the respect of Campbell and his players through his work ethic and résumé. He had been the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator for the previous three seasons.  In 2025, Detroit was still among the league leaders in total points per game (28.3) but struggled to find an offensive identity outside of home run plays. This was despite having Pro Bowlers Gibbs and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, among other playmakers. The team is hoping to change that under Petzing.  "When you listen to him and you sit down with him, and you listen to him talk, he understands quarterback play," Campbell said of Petzing during the NFL's owners meeting in March. "He understands tight end. He understands O-line. He understands receivers. He's coached all of those. He can coach it from the ground up -- all of it. Detroit Lions - Strength of schedule: .467 (27th).  Prime-time games: 2.  Detroit’s 2026 slate feels like an ideal bounce-back setup after an underwhelming finish last season. The Lions face only one playoff team from 2025 during the first five weeks, giving them a realistic opportunity to start fast while settling into a new coaching era. Early matchups against the Jets, Panthers, and Cardinals provide a relatively smooth runway before divisional battles intensify later in the year.  The Lions also benefit from several strategically placed home games, including contests against Green Bay and Minnesota at Ford Field. Internationally, Detroit’s trip to Munich to face New England adds a unique wrinkle, but the overall travel burden remains manageable compared to many NFC contenders. 2026 NFC offseason grades: Evaluating every team's biggest moves (Detroit Lions: C.  Notable additions: OT Blake Miller, C Cade Mays, EDGE Derrick Moore, RB Isiah Pacheco, DB Roger McCreary.  Notable departures: RB David Montgomery, LB Alex Anzalone, DT DJ Reader, CB Amik Robertson, OT Taylor Decker.  Detroit's offense felt like it was merely replacing departures rather than adding to a roster looking to rebound after missing the playoffs. The club shipped David Montgomery to the Texans and replaced him with Isiah Pacheco. It released starting offensive tackle Taylor Decker and used a first-round pick on Blake Miller. Those aren't bad moves by any stretch, but I'm not sure they elevate the team either.  The addition of Derrick Moore in the second round of the draft should finally give the Lions a pass-rushing threat opposite Aidan Hutchinson, which is encouraging.
