He was an absolute rock star on the field at the Senior Bowl practices and saw his stock explode into potential first-cornerback-taken territory by the end of the week. Mitchell’s overwhelming love in the talent evaluator community was reminiscent of safety Jalen Pitre’s popularity when we were putting together the 2022 All-Juice Team. After a week of calls, it started to feel like everyone was mentioning him as an ideal candidate. And it’s easy to see why. Overview: It isn't often that talented defensive backs out of the football-rich state of Florida sign with MAC programs, but then again, little about Mitchell is ordinary. The gifted corner immediately earned playing time for the Rockets and emerged as a starter in his second season on campus, earning first-team all-conference honors as a junior and consensus All-American accolades to cap his career in 2023. Mitchell was arguably the best defender at this year's Senior Bowl and leaves college football with a stellar resume that includes 123 tackles, as well as a school record 46 career pass breakups and six interceptions — two of which he returned for touchdowns. He didn't disappoint. The Toledo prospect blazed a 4.33-second 40-yard dash — the second-fastest mark among cornerbacks — and demonstrated great ball skills in the gauntlet drill. Mitchell also recorded 20 bench press reps, the best among the nine cornerbacks who participated in that drill, to show that he can fit well in a press-man system that might require more physicality. In short, his well-rounded performance could help make him the No. 1 cornerback off the board; and at the least, he looks like a top-20 pick after his performance. The only one preventing Mitchell from being the consensus No. 1 cornerback at this stage in Arnold. The Alabama product ran a respectable 4.51-second 40-yard dash, but his top speed of 18.40 mph during his 10-yard split showed that he should be able to keep pace with NFL receivers, especially in the short game. And a good number of players here who are likely top-100 picks, and practiced on Tuesday, weren't on the practice field for Thursday's final session; and that's not uncommon; minor injuries occur, and players choose to sit out. Senior Bowl Day 2: Draft's CB1 emerging in Mobile? (Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo: My colleague Eric Edholm wrote about Mitchell in this space on Tuesday, but I also want to share my thoughts on him. Mitchell is a riser. He entered the week squarely on the radar for scouts with his combination of size and game film, but it's different when you see him in person. Mitchell utilizes a lot of trap coverage techniques off of press, where he makes an early leverage declaration and forces the receiver to release outside. From there, he has shown off the speed and body control to stay in phase with receivers and has the physicality to close off the catch space. During one matchup against USC's Brenden Rice, Mitchell played from trail and simply closed the distance on a post route before leaping and grabbing an interception in the end zone. He should be in the discussion for CB1 this year.

Mitchell has been getting projected into the latter half of the first round pretty consistently. Anyone who hadn’t seen the confident Rockets cornerback play before learned why on Tuesday. After measuring in at a little over 6 feet tall and a well-built 195 pounds, Mitchell showed off his sticky man-coverage skills in drills. It’s telling that in a drill where the offense has a distinct advantage, Mitchell racked up a few winning reps in 1-on-1 drills. His physicality at the line and quick hip flip and fast feet shone through. Mitchell was flagged once for holding, but one of the things that impressed was how quickly he adjusted his jam and holding to how it was being called. That stood out in very stark contrast to the two Penn State cornerbacks on his team, Kalen King and Johnny Dixon. There's only so much to glean from any prospect on Day 1 of practice at the Senior Bowl, as everyone is acclimating to their surroundings. But Mitchell, No. 19 in Jeremiah’s prospect rankings, did nothing to slow down that talk. "I know I belong and I'm gonna always try to dominate," Mitchell told me. "So, Round 1, Round 2, whatever it is, I try not to get into all of that. I just want to compete and win whenever I'm out there." On tape, Mitchell is an instinctive cornerback that will also get physical with the opposition. He jumps routes constantly and is able to play through the catch point as good as anyone. Checking into the Senior Bowl at 6’0″ and 195 pounds with 31 1/8″ arms should only help his draft stock. It was a huge game in the Mid-American Conference between a pair of 6-1 teams who could ultimately face each other again for the league championship. In the end, Toledo squeaked past Miami by a score of 21-17, and Mitchell played his best game to date. He finished with five tackles and broke up three passes, one late in the game as the RedHawks were driving. In eight games this year, Mitchell has 10 PBUs to his credit. The senior could well be the best cornerback prospect rarely mentioned outside the scouting community. He’s been a terrific player at Toledo the past three years and combines size (over six feet tall) with next-level ball skills. And while Mitchell needs to polish his game, he comes with terrific upside.
