Every NFL team's most underrated player (Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay - Over the last two seasons, Golladay ranks ninth in the NFL in yards from receivers (2,253), seventh in yards per reception (16.69), and tied for fourth in touchdowns (16). Not bad for a guy who caught just 135 passes, which ranked 23rd over that period of time. Factor in that the Lions lost Matthew Stafford for half of the 2019 season with a back injury, and it’s clear that Golladay would be a force multiplier in any offense. DETROIT LIONS - Biggest strength: The Lions' receiving corps sticks out as one of the more underrated units in the NFL. Both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. are both downfield contested-catch threats, and both guys rank among the top 10 at the position in contested catches since 2017. Danny Amendola can also still win in the slot, as he showed last season with a 71.5 receiving grade. A second-year jump from T.J. Hockenson — a highly regarded tight end prospect out of Iowa — and additional contributions from D'Andre Swift (PFF's top receiving running back in the 2020 draft) would give quarterback Matthew Stafford even more to work with as he returns from injury.  Biggest weakness: Detroit didn't have much of a pass rush to speak of in 2019, despite bringing in Trey Flowers from New England last offseason. Julian Okwara should help in the long term, given his combination of ideal physical traits and college production at Notre Dame, but it's tough to count on rookie edge defenders to contribute early. The Lions could very well find themselves struggling to generate consistent pressure again in 2020.  X factor for 2020: Jeff Okudah was just about as clean a prospect as you're going to find coming out of college. From strong physical traits to outstanding production at Ohio State — not allowing a completion rate above 50% in any of his three seasons for the Buckeyes — it's hard to see a path where Okudah doesn't become a quality NFL cornerback. 5 legitimate playoff sleepers for the 2020 NFL season (2. Detroit Lions (Odds to make playoffs: +250) - All of the underlying metrics suggest the Lions were a better team in 2019 than their record implies — they just had rotten luck in what FiveThirtyEight would consider “coin flip games,” finishing 1-5-1. On top of that, they lost Matthew Stafford, who was on pace for a career year under first-year offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, for about half the season.  The big question is whether or not the defense will take off in Matt Patricia’s third year. The problem through his first two years has been the pass rush, and there isn’t an obvious reason to think it’s been improved over the offseason. Detroit drafted Julian Okwara out of Notre Dame but made no other significant additions to the edge rusher group. Maybe bringing in Jamie Collins and Danny Shelton will help Patricia design more effective pressures. If not, it will be another long season for Detroit’s cornerbacks, who are asked to play a ton of man coverage.  The secondary lost its best player in Darius Slay but replaced him with the draft’s best corner in Jeff Okudah and then signed veterans Desmond Trufant and Duron Harmon. Throw in slot stud Justin Coleman and the Lions should have a good, smart secondary.  So what’s preventing me from taking the plunge on the Lions as a viable playoff sleeper? That schedule. Ranking the top 10 NFL QBs for 2020 season (7. Lions' Matthew Stafford - It continues to fly under the radar that Stafford was on pace to throw for 4,998 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 2019 before an injury ended his season after eight games. At the time of his injury, Stafford ranked second in touchdown passes, fourth in yards per attempt, fifth in passer rating, third in DYAR, fifth in DVOA, and seventh in total QBR. Freed from the constraints of the Jim Bob Cooter offensive system that focused more on short passes and playing in a Darrell Bevell system that allowed him to use his arm talent to throw downfield, Stafford thrived.   As I wrote at the time:  "What's changed is that the Lions replaced Jim Bob Cooter with Darrell Bevell at offensive coordinator and Bevell has allowed Stafford to use his arm talent to throw the ball downfield with frequency. Cooter tried to limit the mistakes that Stafford has a habit of making by forcing him to get the ball out quickly to underneath receivers -- at the beginning, it actually seemed like a good idea. In 2016, Stafford averaged 8 air yards per attempt, which was the league's eighth-lowest average. In 2017, he also averaged 8 air yards per attempt. In 2018, he averaged 7 air yards per attempt, which was the league's sixth-lowest average. This year, under Bevell, Stafford is averaging 10.7 air yards per attempt. Only Jameis Winston ranks ahead of him. As a result, he's averaging 8.6 yards per attempt after averaging 7.1 yards per attempt during the first decade of his career. It turns out, letting Stafford use his God-given arm strength is actually a good idea."  With Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones still around, and T.J. Hockenson entering Year 2, Stafford is poised to pick up where he left off. Assuming he can stay healthy this time around, Stafford has a legitimate chance to put together the best season of his career. (Detroit Lions - Matthew Stafford’s situation Post 2020 :  Everyone knows that Matt Patricia’s hot seat is scalding, but the attention in Detroit should really be on Matthew Stafford. With Detroit continuing to underwhelm in the NFC North, could this be the 32-year-old’s final season in the Motor City? Stafford is one of the league’s most underrated players due to playing with a horrendous offensive line. When healthy, the former No.1 overall pick can lead the offense to a top-10 finish in passing yards and touchdowns. The biggest concern is health moving forward after two injured-ridden seasons.  The Lions fell flat without Stafford last season, who missed eight games due to a spinal injury. Rumors floated around that the long-time starter could be traded this offseason with the team wanting to start fresh. Schein: Ranking the eight worst-to-first candidates (1. Lions - The NFC North is the most flawed division in football. Thus, all four teams can win it. Yes, even the Lions, who haven't won a division title since back in 1993, when they were playing in the NFC Central.  I still give Green Bay the edge over the rest of the field, but the Packers' counterproductive and inexplicable offseason gives them a 10-win ceiling. While Green Bay did play in the NFC title game just five months ago, I don't think the Pack are on the level of NFC adversaries in San Francisco, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Dallas or Philadelphia. Heck, right now, the Cardinals, Seahawks, Falcons and Rams look better, too. But someone has to win the North. Minnesota is trying to win while retooling -- and now Dalvin Cook's apparently pondering a holdout. I see the Vikings winning eight or nine games. The Bears have a great defense ... and the least inspiring quarterback room in the league. Smells like 8-8.  Which leads me back to Detroit. I'm saying there's a chance. A real one.  Matthew Stafford is a star, as he displayed in Darrell Bevell's offense last year. Stafford's 2019 campaign, of course, was limited to eight games by a back injury, but in that half-season, he stacked up some sparkling figures: 19:5 TD-to-INT ratio, 312.5 passing yards per game, 106.0 passer rating. Now it's Year 2 in Bevell's attack -- no more learning curve! As I wrote last month, I can see the 32-year-old signal-caller leading the league in passing yards. Especially with Detroit's receiving corps, which I love. Kenny Golladay broke out last season, snagging a league-high 11 touchdown catches and a Pro Bowl bid. Marvin Jones is a perfect No. 2, while Danny Amendola is a strong No. 3 in the slot. And I remain a big believer in tight end T.J. Hockenson. With better health and an NFL season under his belt, the 2019 first-rounder can become a stud. Meanwhile, in the 2020 NFL Draft, GM Bob Quinn stole D'Andre Swift in Round 2. I expect him to be in the mix for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Matt Patricia's defense is beefed up, even after Darius Slay's departure via trade. I will never believe Jeff Okudah was the third-best player in this year's draft class, but I believe in him as a legit NFL corner. Danny Shelton, Jaimie Collins and Desmond Trufant were strong veteran pickups addressing needs on all three levels.  And check the schedule. Detroit can start 4-4. And then they play Washington and Carolina before hosting Houston on Thanksgiving. Thus, the Lions could hit December sitting pretty at 7-4.  As I alluded to above with my unenthusiastic Packers endorsement, I'm not ready to pull the trigger on Detroit winning its first NFC North title just yet. Hockenson looked like he could be an exception with a monster Week 1 performance as a rookie, but he wound up with similar or lesser production to other rookies drafted later, like Dawson Knox, Irv Smith Jr. and Noah Fant. I'm not that worried. Hockenson suffered more than most after Matthew Stafford was injured, and he still displays the athleticism and versatility necessary to keep defenses off balance. The bottom five teams with the lowest RAS grades since 2001 (4. Detroit Lions:  Despite having strong-armed quarterback Matthew Stafford and Hall of Fame-caliber wide receiver Calvin Johnson for a good number of years, the Detroit Lions have been one of the most aggressively average teams of the past two decades. Much like Washington, a lot of the blame can be attributed in many different directions, but much of it has to do with questionable draft strategy.  The Lions come in as our fourth-worst team since 2001 at identifying and drafting “Elite” RAS talent. Of the 122 players the Lions have drafted since the 2001 NFL Draft who have a RAS grade, just 45 of them have come in with an “Elite” grade. Unlike Washington, this trend is also reflected in the Lions first-round picks, with just 12 of their 21 first-round picks achieving an “Elite” grade.  Detroit has finished at the bottom of their division 9 times over that span, including each of the past two seasons. They only have 3 playoff appearances to show for it over that time, with zero postseason wins. The Ford family — owners of the team since 1963 — has proclaimed a renewed dedication to building the Lions into a consistent winner.
