Biggest steals of the 2024 NFL Draft: Rome Odunze, Jer'Zhan Newton, Brenden Rice and more (CB TERRION ARNOLD, DETROIT LIONS:  A feisty man coverage specialist, Arnold was the target of a Lions trade-up at No. 24, marking another step in an overhaul of their secondary after the team acquired Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson earlier in the offseason.  Arnold is capable of holding up as a boundary cornerback but really thrived inside, grading out in the 90th percentile when lined up in the slot in 2023. His five interceptions this past season tied for sixth among Power Five cornerbacks.  IOL CHRISTIAN MAHOGANY, DETROIT LIONS:  A premier pass protector, Mahogany allowed just 14 pressures and one sack on 711 pass-blocking snaps from 2021 to 2023. 2024 NFL Draft: 10 favorite team draft classes (DETROIT LIONS:  Generally, trading up in the draft for non-quarterbacks is not a good idea. The uncertainty of player evaluation typically trumps anything a front office feels about a particular prospect. There is a degree of evidence, however, that players sliding from their position on the consensus board can represent value, and having a good feel of when to bend the rules is what has made this current Lions regime one of the best in the league.  Terrion Arnold was the top cornerback on the consensus board and the No. 11 player pre-draft. The Lions likely never considered a scenario where he would be within striking distance of their pick, so it’s tough to dislike trading to No. 24 to get him.  Doubling up at cornerback with Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round is also an excellent hedge. They can coexist in the same defense, but there’s also a chance that the Lions were wrong on Arnold and Rakestraw becomes a better player.  Giovanni Manu is one of the few players PFF has no data on, but he has absurd athleticism and size and was getting a lot of buzz in the lead-up to the draft.  Mekhi Wingo has potential as an interior defender, and Christian Mahogany in the sixth round is one of the best value picks in the entire draft. They had a fantastic 2023 season, but their secondary – specifically cornerbacks – needed an upgrade for a better run in 2024. Lions: A-.  Favorite pick: The Lions had real needs at cornerback and to have Terrion Arnold fall to 24 is a gift from the football gods. He's one of the most motivated players we've ever talked to.  Best value: I loved Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the first round, but I know teams had concerns about his size, injury history, and long speed. His physicality reminded me of Devon Witherspoon.  Most surprising pick: The Lions gave up a 2025 third-rounder to get Giovanni Manu in the fourth round. 2024 NFL Draft Winners and Losers: Day 1 (Day 1 Winners - Detroit Lions: Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama.  In the months leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft, there were zero projections of Arnold not going as a top-20 pick. Arnold was viewed as a likely top-16 selection, and the consensus was that he would be the first cornerback drafted. It was a shock when Arnold slipped lower than the top 20 and wasn’t the first cornerback selected. Lions general manager Brad Holmes traded a third-round pick to the Cowboys to move up five spots and land Arnold as the 24th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Arnold could be a long-term No. 1 corner for the Lions, and he should instantly add much-needed coverage ability to the secondary. He does a nice job staying on top of deep routes, and he can locate the ball. I'd like to see him do a better job of finishing with the ball instead of simply poking it away. He is awesome against the run; not only is he quick to key/read, but he attacks blockers, including offensive linemen. Watch the Georgia tape from this past November to see him thud off an offensive tackle before delivering a physical stop. He is always bouncing around; his energy is palpable through the screen. Ennis Rakestraw Jr., CB, Missouri:  Ennis Rakestraw Jr. was a three-star recruit out of Duncanville High School in West Dallas, Texas, and he chose Missouri over Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia, Miami, Michigan State and South Carolina. Alabama had been his “dream school,” but Rakestraw stuck with the Tigers because they had been on him as a prospect earlier in the process.  Over four seasons with the Tigers, Rakestraw allowed 89 catches on 149 targets for 1,106 yards, 442 yards after the catch, 10 touchdowns, one interception, 21 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 102.4.  That TD/INT ratio and opponent passer rating… well, it’s not an ideal combination. But Rakestraw is one player in this class whose tape is more impressive than his metrics, and the path to NFL success might not be the one he imagined, but it’s pretty clear.  PLUSES:  Aggressive closer to the ball from anywhere on the field, Rakestraw is looking to make receivers pay for their catches. Tackles like a safety in the backfield.  That extends to his potential as a blitzer off the edge; Rakestraw will even throw a few foot-fakes at enemy blockers.  Trails well in press coverage through the route and can maintain his landmarks on go, post, and seam routes downfield.  Equally adept in slot and outside coverage.  Has a good eye for route concepts and changing assignments in zone coverage.  MINUSES:  Rakestraw will turn his hips too soon to his receiver, and it’s not always easy to tighten it up and cover closely after that.  More of a bail-and-trail defender in press than a true face-up cornerback who will match throughout.  Inconsistent recovery speed to deal with receivers after they’ve paced him through the route. Giving a first-round grade to a guy who has allowed 10 touchdowns and has just one interception through four seasons is a bit of a stretch. I do, however, like Rakestraw as a potential plus starter were he to play a hybrid role in which he could alternate between outside, slot, and safety to maximize what he does well. He takes on every blocker like it's an insult and relishes getting man or press coverage assignments, whether it’s inside or outside.  Rakestraw is undersized, weighing in at 183 pounds at the combine, and will still need to channel the energy he brings to the game as his aggressive and handsy style, with lack of overwhelming athleticism, will draw penalties at the next level. His ability to hold his own against different types of wide receivers, with potential to play snaps in the slot, gives Rakestraw a path as a starter. Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Missouri — 5-11, 183, Junior.  Overview: Rakestraw starred at the prep level for Duncanville in the Dallas area, earning a three-star grade from recruiters, but proved better at the college level than expected. He enjoyed his best statistical season for the Tigers in 2022, registering 35 tackles, including 4.5 for loss and 12 passes broken up while forcing three turnovers (two forced fumbles, one interception). He struggled with injuries, at times, at Missouri, but again impressed in limited duty in 2023, before opting to head early to the NFL with career totals of 107 tackles, including eight for loss and 24 passes broken up, albeit just one interception.  Strengths:  Punches above his weight class, showing the grit and physicality needed to succeed in the NFL, as well as disproportionately long arms (32"), which he uses effectively to cloud the vision of receivers as the ball arrives.  Lives up to his name, "raking" at the ball when confronting opponents, forcing three fumbles over his career.  Light feet and loose hips to turn and run with receivers, showing a smooth transition to change direction.  Eased concerns about his speed and explosiveness with a solid effort at the combine, including a 4.50-second 40-yard dash and 10'0 broad jump.  Experienced playing left, right and nickel cornerback positions, easing his transition to the NFL. Concerns:  Average size for the position and already has a history of injury (including a torn ACL in 2021 and groin injury in 2023 that took him out of the lineup for four games).  Quick but not fast, projecting better as a nickel corner for some.  Average ball-skills for the position, turning 24 career pass breakups into just one interception.  Summary: Rakestraw is better than the sum of his parts, combining athleticism, instincts and competitiveness to emerge as a legitimate star the past two seasons at Missouri. His slim frame, durability red flags and average ball skills may push him down the board for some, but I see a true football player who will ultimately outperform some of the corners of this class perhaps selected ahead of him with better "tools." It’s one CB and one WR on an island ruthlessly fighting to maintain leverage and positioning through a four-second rep.  There are many good man coverage CBs in this class — Caelen Carson, Josh Newton, and Max Melton among them — but Ennis Rakestraw Jr. might be the best pure press-man CB.  Rakestraw doesn’t have elite ball production or speed, and some will ask if he’s an NFL-caliber playmaker. He thrives in close quarters in the run game, posting a 75.0-plus run-blocking grade in both inside-zone and duo schemes, making him a seamless fit for the Lions, who want to get vertical quickly. Best, worst, most interesting pick for each NFC team (Detroit Lions - Best pick (B): CB Terrion Arnold, Alabama (Round 1, Pick 24).  The Lions needed some corner help, so it makes sense to make a move to get one. Arnold gives them another Alabama secondary player to go with Brian Branch, another player with versatility. (Pete Prisco).  Worst pick (D+): OT Giovanni Manu, University of British Columbia (Round 4, Pick 126).  Mountain of a man with flashes of incredible burst at his size but overall flexibility and athletic profile is lacking. Of course will take time to translate to the stronger competition level but the length and burst make him a fascinating project. But long-term developmental type. Hand work needs to improve and not overly aware of complex blitzes. (Chris Trapasso).  Most interesting pick (B): CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Missouri (Round 2, Pick 61).  Rakestraw Jr.'s playstyle perfectly matches Lions head coach Dan Campbell's desired playstyle: with an aggression level of someone bigger than your listed size. In the case of Rakestraw, that's 5-feet, 11 inches while weighing 183 pounds. He makes up for the slight frame by using his 32-inch arms to get physical in press man coverage and jam receivers off the line of scrimmage. Rakestraw joins a talented secondary headlined by cornerback Carlton Davis, safety Brian Branch and fellow rookie Terrion Arnold. Grades, Analysis and Trackers for Sione Vaki

Grades:

Yardbarker (4th round, 132nd overall: runningback/safety Sione Vaki:  After taking a gamble on their last pick, why not roll the dice again? Although he primarily played safety in Utah, Sione Vaki was introduced as a running back. The position change can do him some good. Vaki became a fan favorite due to his physicality and anticipation on tackles at safety. His upside as a safety is limited due to his coverage ability. But, he produced for the Utes in emergency running back duties. CBS (132. Lions: Sione Vaki, RB, Utah - Grade: C+.  Fire-hydrant safety. Goes 100 mph every play. Quickness and instincts stand out. Wasn't a big ball hawk in college but not totally inept in that regard. Tiny frame and shorter arms than what's normally desired. Can play anywhere. Also has some running back ability too. PFN (Round 5, Pick 164: Sione Vaki, S/RB, Utah - The Lions traded into Round 4 twice — once to add a tackle, and once to add Utah’s Sione Vaki. The Lions have a need at safety after releasing Tracy Walker, and Vaki could end up providing value with his explosive athleticism and willing physicality. But Vaki’s angles in pursuit are very inconsistent, and on my board, there were several more versatile, more consistent safety prospects available. If they play him at running back, they already had two quality RBs on the roster, and there were other more versatile RBs on the board as well. Walter football (Detroit Lions: Sione Vaki, S, Utah – C Grade.  I don’t think the Lions needed to trade up for Sione Vaki, who fits the range as a fourth-round prospect. SI All Lions LAMORANDIER (The big question is what position will Vaki play. He was a safety during his time in Utah, and led the team in total defensive snaps last season. However, due to injuries in the offensive backfield, he was called upon at running back. He proceeded to rush for 317 yards, to go along with 203 receiving yards and five touchdowns.  For someone weighing 210 pounds, he is a good linear athlete. He also improved his 40-yard dash time to 4.51 seconds at his pro day. The second-team All-American safety played plenty of deep snaps, but he seems to do his best work close to the box when he can come downhill in run support. Vaki isn’t necessarily a reliable tackler, though, posting a 14.3 percent missed tackle rate in 2023. When he hits a ball carrier, they feel it. In coverage, he seems to lack instinct and is rarely in position to make plays on the ball.  If the Lions plan to use him on the offensive side of the ball, he would likely be a depth option at best.  No matter what position Vaki settles in at, his special teams value will be immediate. He played safety and running back at Utah, but he is a solid safety in coverage. Don’t expect him to make exceptional plays on the football very often, but Vaki packs a mean punch. ESPN (Pre-Draft Analysis - Vaki's versatility is his greatest strength. He plays high, in the box and over the slot on defense. He also played some running back in 2023 and rushed for 158 yards against Cal. He has the experience and traits to make early contributions on special teams. Vaki ran the third-slowest 40 out of the safeties at the combine (4.62 seconds), but his 10-yard split time (1.54) is quick, and he closes well breaking on passes in off-coverage and zone looks. Pride of Detroit (No. 132: Sione Vaki, RB/S, Utah - Vaki is one of my favorite players in this draft cycle and a player who is willing to do anything for his team in order to help them win. Grades, Analysis and Trackers for Mehki Wingo

Grades:

PFN (Round 6, Pick 201: Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU - In Round 6, the Lions got a top-100 prospect on my board. Mekhi Wingo fits the Lions’ personnel perfectly as a disruptive 3-tech who can play off of the gravity that D.J. Reader and Alim McNeill give off inside. He’s a sawed-off disruptor with elite attack explosiveness, violent hands, and the relentless motor to buoy a productive career.  Grade: A+):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/detroit-lions-nfl-draft-grades-2024/

Walter football (Detroit Lions: Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU – A Grade.  The Lions will need to put lots of pressure on Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy in the playoffs, so finding players to do that is crucial. Mekhi Wingo is a small defensive lineman, but he can rush the passer in the interior. SI All Lions LAMORANDIER (Although I didn’t love the previous two selections, the last two selections of Holmes' draft might be my favorite ones. The Lions needed a defensive tackle that can quickly get into the backfield. The redshirt junior doesn’t have great length, yet uses his hands really well to help make up for it.  Wingo's 1.63-second 10-yard split is rare. That’s faster than a lot of EDGE players, and it’s coming from a compact 284-pounder. At the college level, he never really reached his full potential, after being named SEC All-Freshman while at Missouri. He wasn’t ever overly productive, either, which was probably the reason he was still available in the sixth round. Even though he racked up 4.5 sacks in 2023 while missing five games due to a groin injury, his 7.2 percent pass-rush win rate last year is nothing extraordinary. Wingo rarely ever leaving the field could also have something to do with an average win rate, though. He is the definition of an "iron man." Even with the groin injury last year, the team captain was set on returning for the Tigers' bowl game. That’s rare in today’s age.  At this stage in the draft, really any type of on-field usage is considered a win. Yardbarker (6th round, 169th overall: defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo - At six foot/280 lbs, LSU’s Mekhi Wingo may lack size, but you’re witnessing a talented defender when that tape plays. Wingo has the natural strength needed to separate from lateral blocks. Despite losing battles at times due to his length, Wingo’s hop-and-chop move makes it tough for guards to stop as he goes into a pass rush. Rotating him on the line between Hutchinson and Reader with James Houston will be tough to stop. PFF (189. DETROIT LIONS VIA (HOUSTON, VIA DENVER, VIA L.A. RAMS AND BUFFALO): DI MEKHI WINGO, LSU.  Pick Grade: Above Average.  This is a great spot to get Wingo, a good athlete for someone his size. SI Lions (Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU - How he fits: Wingo slipped much farther down the board than expected, as many had a late-Day 2 grade on the talented LSU defender. He is prone to inconsistency, but has explosiveness in his game and was a team captain for the Tigers. Wingo also was disruptive in the backfield with 8.5 career sacks in three seasons. He profiles as a versatile defender who could line up in multiple techniques for the Lions.  When he starts: The Lions bolstered their defensive line with the addition of DJ Reader as the nose tackle, and Alim McNeill will handle most of the other defensive tackle responsibilities. As a result, the Lions can ease Wingo into the professional ranks. If he outperforms expectations, he could come to own a rotational role down the line in his rookie season. ESPN (Round 6: No. 189: Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU - My take: In their fourth time trading up, the Lions are bringing in a team captain with 98 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble throughout his college tenure. Once again, the Lions are adding talent to help a defense that struggled at times. Pride of Detroit (No. 189: Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU.  Wingo was an elite tier Grit Index player (only 16 players landed at level 1 in this class) and was a captain at LSU. He’s a bit undersized at 6-foot-0 1⁄2, 284 pounds, but he has an incredible first step, great hand movement/placement, and tireless motor to make him very capable pass rusher at the next level. Grades, Analysis and Trackers for Giovanni Manu

PFN (Round 4, Pick 126 (From GB via NYJ): Giovanni Manu, OT, British Columbia
This is a sneaky pick for the Lions. Detroit hasn’t yet invested in the defensive line this year, but Giovanni Manu has under-the-radar value as a high-upside developmental offensive tackle. He’s very raw technically, but at 6’7”, 352 pounds, he’s an uncommon athlete with a 5.06 40-yard dash and a 33.5” vertical.  There won’t be immediate returns with this pick, but with a year or two of seasoning, Manu has starting potential at a premium spot.  Grade: B-): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/detroit-lions-nfl-draft-grades-2024/

Yardbarker (4th round, 126th overall: offensive tackle Giovanni Manu:  With one of the strongest offensive lines in football last season, Brad Holmes is willing to gamble on the upside. Few players offer as much raw talent as Giovanni Manu of the University of British Columbia. While Manu lacks experience against higher competition, he passes all the visual tests. Standing at a whopping six foot seven inches and over 325 lbs of lean muscle, Manu has some major upside. CBS (Giovaanni Manu, OT, British Columbia.  Grade: C-.  Mountain of a man with flashes of incredible burst at his size but overall flexibility and athletic profile is lacking. Of course will take time to translate to the stronger competition level but the length and burst make him a fascinating project. SI All Lions LAMORANDIER (The Lions gave up a 2025 third-round pick to select Manu in the fourth round. Manu was originally put on my radar after all the top-30 visits -- including with the Lions -- he went on after an unreal pro day. You just don’t see many 352-pounders run as fast as he did. Not that a 40-time is all that important for a lineman, it just demonstrates the type of athlete he is. More importantly are his agility drills, in which he did not perform as well. Perhaps he was not as adequately trained in the short shuttle and 3-cone drill as combine athletes, though.  I won’t lie, I couldn’t watch much film on Manu. The common theme in evaluations is that Manu is extremely raw and needs a few years of seasoning. Given the lack of tackle depth, a more pro-ready swing tackle would have been preferred by me.  This pick feels a lot like the selection of Brodric Martin last year. A big ball of clay with some promise who was picked a lot sooner than many expected. At its ceiling, this pick could look great in the future if -- and it’s a big if -- Manu progresses and lives up to his full potential. The Philadelphia Eagles took a risk on left tackle Jordan Mailata, albeit just a seventh-round pick in 2018, and they were greatly rewarded. Mailata also had much better movement skills and longer arms than Manu, though.  At the end of the day, I am relying on Holmes knowing much more than most. SI Lions (Giovanni Manu, OT, British Columbia - How he fits: Manu is a little-known prospect with excellent athletic ability. He's a developmental piece who began playing football as a ninth grade and played collegiately in Canada. He'll need to grow, but the Lions liked him enough to deal a 2025 third-round pick to move up for him.  When he starts: Time will tell, as it depends on how fast he comes along from an adjustment standpoint. He has the physical traits to be a difference-maker, but he'll be in need of seasoning before playing a big role. Taylor Decker's contract expires after this season, so there could be a starting spot available as soon as next season.
