The NFL Preseason’s Good, Bad and Ugly: Why We’re High on Drew Allar, Fernando Mendoza (Ugly: The Lions’ secondary could be a horror show.  Last year, the Lions missed the playoffs. If they do so again, it’ll likely be because they can’t stop anybody from completing a pass.  This offseason, the secondary has gone from a massive question mark to downright abysmal. Star safety Kerby Joseph is starting the season on the PUP list due to a knee condition that limited him to six games in 2025. Fellow stud defensive back Brian Branch is also on the PUP list stemming from a torn Achilles sustained in Week 14 against the Cowboys last season.  Then there’s corner Terrion Arnold, a 2023 second-round pick who was released after being charged with eight felony counts in June,3 including kidnapping. Arnold has since signed with the defending-champion Seahawks and been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.  Going into the season opener on Sept. 13 against the Saints, the secondary should shape up with D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin on the perimeter while Roger McCreary and Keith Abney II will fight for slot snaps with Christian Izien (undisclosed) battling to get healthy. 2026 NFL preseason Week 3 rookie QB grades: Ravens undrafted signal caller shines (Luke Altmyer, Lions - Draft status: Undrafted (Illinois)).  Altmyer entered the final week of the preseason in a legitimate competition with Joshua Dobbs for the top backup job behind Jared Goff. Coming into the contest, Dan Campbell noted that the Illinois rookie needed to stay out of harm's way, but he was unable to keep a clean sheet on Saturday. Altmyer completed 7-of-11 for 55 yards along with an interception on his first drive of the day after getting the start. He did respond by leading a touchdown drive on the next possession, but then gave way to Dobbs, who had a more polished day with 128 yards and two passing touchdowns. 2026 NFL Preseason Week 3 Recap: Immediate fantasy football takeaways from Saturday's games (Lions compete for the backup wide receiver spots: A knee injury landed Cedrick Wilson Jr. on injured reserve, opening a roster spot for another receiver.  Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams sit at the top of the Lions' wide receiver depth chart, and neither has played in the preseason. Isaac TeSlaa played a surprising amount over the first two preseason games, but was among the starters to sit in this showdown. Wilson had appeared locked into one of the backup spots, but now that he’s on injured reserve, he won’t be among the top backups.  Tom Kennedy is the next man up among the outside receivers, and appears to have secured a roster spot. He has played 30 games for the Lions over the last seven seasons, and he may be more involved this season than in the past. He is also competing to be a returner, and took the first punt return for Detroit in this game.  Greg Dortch appears to be the next man most likely to make the roster after only playing in the first half last week. He was playing in the slot in 11 personnel early in that game, but played longer than you would expect for someone who has a secure roster spot. Dortch is also in contention for the punt return job, but if Kennedy has won it, there is no guarantee Dortch makes the roster.  Tay Martin and Lucky Jackson were the other starters for this game, and there is a solid chance one of them will make the roster, although it’s also possible Detroit will sign someone who was released elsewhere instead of keeping one of these players.  Miscellaneous Notes - The Lions continued to sit quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Isaac TeSlaa and tight ends Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright and Tyler Conklin.  Backup Isiah Pacheco remains out due to a back injury. 2026 NFL Preseason, Week 3: What We Learned from Saturday's games (Lions at Colts -Pair of important Colts make short but sweet appearances. Keenan Allen signed with Indianapolis on Aug. 19, and on Saturday he surprisingly got a little run ahead of his 14th NFL season. Wearing No. 10 instead of his usual 13, Allen made an immediate impact, coming across the field to catch a 24-yard rope from Anthony Richardson as Lions cornerback Roger McCreary closed in. The reception got the Colts to midfield in a hurry. Five players later, they closed their opening drive with a field goal. Allen, who played just four snaps, looks locked in and ready to make an impact for Indy alongside fellow wideouts Alec Pierce, who returned to practice this week, and Josh Downs. Sauce Gardner logged his first four snaps of the preseason and made a catch, as well. Gardner was in coverage on Lions wide receiver Lucky Jackson when quarterback Luke Altmyer made an ill-advised attempt to sneak one past him to nearby tight end Thomas Gordon Gardner plucked it from the air for the interception on his final play of the day. The two-time All-Pro appeared in only four games for the Colts after being traded to Indianapolis midway through last season. He’ll look to carry this momentum into what is hopefully a healthier regular season for the soon-to-be 25-year-old.  Rakestraw still struggles in coverage. There was good and bad from the Lions' 2024 second-round pick in Detroit’s preseason finale. Rakestraw, who played only eight games as a rookie due to injuries, missed all of last season after undergoing shoulder surgery and has already been banged up a few times this August, is still working to find his footing as a cover man in the NFL. He played the entire first half against the Colts and allowed three receptions for 44 yards on five targets. On a particularly bad sequence, Rakestraw got burnt by Anthony Gould for a 25-yard fourth-down catch into the red zone and then gave up a 14-yard gain to wideout Deion Burks on the very next play. Rakestraw did show off his physicality with six tackles and made a diving interception of a bad throw under duress by Riley Leonard, so there will still be some positive tape. However, the overall numbers are not promising as Rakestraw seeks his place somewhere down the CB depth chart. Projecting the NFL's sack leaders for 2026: Which pass rushers will wreak the most havoc? (1. Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions - Projected mean 2026 sack total: 12.5.  2025 sack total: 14.5.  This is the second straight year that Hutchinson leads our sack projections, despite having never actually led the league in sacks. But everything lines up for him to have a huge season.  Two years ago, he had a prolific first five games (7.5 sacks, 35% pass rush win rate) before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Last season, Hutchinson stayed healthy and delivered 14.5 sacks in 17 games. If anything, this projection might be underrating Hutchinson, because while his legacy pass rush win rate was above average, he moved up to fourth among edge rushers in the updated version.  The other big reason Hutchinson's forecast is so strong is playing time. Unlike many pass rushers, Hutchinson rarely comes off the field. He played 91% of his possible defensive snaps last season, a much higher rate than players such as Will Anderson Jr. (66%) or Nik Bonitto (62%).  Hutchinson has two other perks working in his favor, the quality of the Lions' overall team (eighth in ESPN's Football Power Index) and the ease of their schedule (second easiest, according to FPI). Although Moore missed a couple weeks of training camp with a minor groin strain, he has caused problems off the edge this preseason. Even in a down season, Detroit was a top-10 unit in offensive DVOA, yards per play, points per drive and EPA per play in 2025 -- all the big metrics. Now that Gibbs (current betting favorite for Offensive Player of the Year) no longer splits time with David Montgomery, there are more chances for electrifying runs from anywhere on the field.  The Lions' appearance on the watchability podium is thanks to their defense, which surrendered a ton of explosive passes in 2025 (13.9% of opponent dropbacks, 25th among league defenses) and is only thinner and slower in the secondary this season with cornerback Terrion Arnold off the team and safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph still injured. 2026 NFL Quarterback Tiers: Which Starters Are Elite And Who Should Be A Backup? (Tier 4: Supporting-Cast Dependent - This group can produce like top-10 quarterbacks provided the conditions around them are just right. Some in this group require pristine pass protection. Others need an innovative play-caller or a stacked receiving corps. But when those needs aren’t met, they play more like bottom-10 quarterbacks. This is the middle class of NFL passers.  The fanbases for these quarterbacks are all thinking the same thing: Why is my guy lumped in with these scrubs?  I’d guess that Lions fans are most offended, and they could make a decent argument that Jared Goff belongs in a higher tier based on production alone. Even last season, when Detroit missed the playoffs, Goff remained productive without Ben Johnson calling plays. That ignores the fact that Detroit’s offense was mostly powered by Jahmyr Gibbs’ explosive runs and a receiving corps that could turn a short pass into a monster gain. Goff’s inability to play under pressure is the main reason he’s stuck in this group. He was, once again, one of the worst quarterbacks in the league when pressured, and his lack of mobility, which won’t miraculously improve now that he’s in his 30s, is the root cause. Put Goff in, say, the Chiefs offense, and he’d crumble. If you need proof, just revisit his first season in Detroit when the Lions were still in rebuilding mode. That leaves Rock Ya-Sin eyeing a starting role at corner, while D.J. Reed looks to rebound after an injury-filled season in 2025, which limited him to eight games. Meanwhile, the safety position remains in flux with Brian Branch (Achilles) and Kerby Joseph (knee) coming back from injuries.  The question: Right tackle -- The Lions selected Blake Miller with the No. 17 overall pick at the 2026 NFL Draft, and he's eyed as the Week 1 starter on the right side. This comes after Taylor Decker requested his release this offseason, prompting Penei Sewell to move to left tackle to replace him.
