NFL backfield rankings: All 32 running back units entering the 2020 NFL season (15. DETROIT LIONS:  It wasn’t exactly the plan, but the Lions had four different runners with at least 200 yards on the ground last season, with Kerryon Johnson leading the way (403). Johnson had a strong start to his career in 2018, grading at 80.9 overall and averaging 5.4 yards per carry to go with an excellent performance in the passing game. However, Johnson has been limited by injuries in his two years and the Lions were active in the running back market prior to the draft, landing D’Andre Swift out of Georgia in the second round.  Swift was the top running back on the PFF Big Board due to his receiving ability that will be featured right away in Detroit’s offense. If Johnson is healthy, he and Swift will make a solid three-down duo. Bo Scarbrough returns as the No. 3 option after averaging an impressive 3.2 yards after contact per rush on 89 carries last season, while 2019 sixth-rounder Ty Johnson put up similar numbers on his 63 carries. Dark horse candidates to be the highest-graded NFL players at their positions in 2020 (WR KENNY GOLLADAY, DETROIT LIONS:  PFF’s fantasy projections — which are slightly less bullish on Golladay now than they were a month ago — currently have him slated for 1,300 receiving yards in 2020. With Matthew Stafford returning and feeding him downfield targets, there is a good chance that Golladay puts up big numbers and high grades in a Detroit offense that was pushing the ball downfield in the passing game early and often during the 2019 season. After all, few players are better at coming down with those deep passes than he is. Golladay’s 930 receiving yards on passes 20 or more yards downfield over the past two seasons are fewer than only Tyreek Hill and Mike Evans. Those big plays could be the key to a big grade in 2020.   C FRANK RAGNOW, DETROIT LIONS:  Ragnow fit right into his new position in 2019, and given his play at Arkansas while at center, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Similar to his college days, run blocking was the strength of Ragnow’s game this past season.   His 78.2 run-blocking grade fell below only Jason Kelce on the season at the position, and his 74.9 overall grade already ranked sixth in the NFL among centers. NFL secondary rankings: All 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season (14. DETROIT LIONS:  With Darius Slay now with the Eagles, much rests on the shoulders of top draft pick Jeffrey Okudah to be impressive right out of the gate. Okudah was the No. 1 corner on PFF’s Big Board and the No. 4 player in the entire draft, regardless of position. He was the consensus best corner in this draft and excelled in man coverage during his college career. He is a perfect match for Detroit's man-heavy coverages, but expecting a rookie to be better than Slay was, even in a down year, is asking a lot.  Okudah will play alongside Desmond Trufant, who gets a chance to revive his career in Detroit and try to rediscover the form that he began his NFL career with. After back-to-back years with a grade above 80.0, Trufant hasn’t topped that mark since. But, like Okudah, he is a good fit for the man coverage scheme the Lions want to run. Amani Oruwariye, Darryl Roberts and Mike Ford round out the depth chart with solid options, while Justin Coleman will continue to cover the slot.  Oruwariye, in particular, could be an option to start if either Trufant or Okudah struggles, as he has impressed in limited snaps so far in the NFL. Tracy Walker will retain one safety spot after finishing 2019 with the best PFF grade of any Lions defensive back, but he will now line up next to Duron Harmon, who comes over from the Patriots. Harmon has been one of the better pure free safeties in the league for a while in New England and allows the Lions to run more single-high looks with aggressive man coverage. NFL quarterback rankings: All 32 starters entering the 2020 NFL season (Tier 3 - Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions:  Here’s what I said about Matthew Stafford after the 2019 season:  In one of the biggest single-year transformations in recent memory, Stafford briefly returned to his best in 2019 before he lost his season due to injury. Stafford increased his average depth of target by over 4 yards per attempt, a massive improvement in offensive aggressiveness that led to the most efficient year of his career and the league’s highest percentage of big-time throws. He also saw the biggest jump in the percentage of positively graded throws outside of Ryan Tannehill, which led to the league’s sixth-most efficient passing attack while Stafford was on the field. He had fallen into more of a game manager mode in recent seasons, but Stafford and the Lions embraced a high-risk, high-reward style that led to more explosive plays but also a few more misses down the field. And if they continue down that path, the payout could be massive.  Stafford getting back to a downfield attacking machine is a great sign for the Lions, and that should absolutely be their approach in 2020. There are a handful of games each year in which Stafford looks like a top-five quarterback, using his strong arm and playmaking feel to make “wow” plays all over the field. Sleeper NFC rookies to watch in camp (Detroit Lions - EDGE Julian Okwara (Impressive stat to know: 19.5 tackles for loss and 13 sacks across his final 22 games at Notre Dame):  Okwara is a dude at 6-4, 252 pounds with nearly 35-inch tentacles. His power is effortless, and it looks like he could add more weight to his frame, which should be a scary thought for offensive linemen who struggle to anchor against bull rushes. While never totally dominated in college, Okwara did have some long stretches without much pass-rushing production. Due to the fact that the Lions had a disastrous 2019 season, it's easy to forget that they actually got off to an impressive start, going 2-0-1 over their first three games. Unfortunately for Detroit, in the weeks after that Matthew Stafford would get injured and the wheels eventually fell of the wagon, which was followed by the wagon catching fire and exploding. NFL linebacker rankings: All 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season 19. DETROIT LIONS:  Last season, Lions linebackers produced the second-worst overall grade (40.7) among the 32 units. Rookie Jahlani Tavai posted the top grade for the unit, at 60.5, and as he did in college, he did his best work in the run game where his 65.9 grade ranked fifth among rookie linebackers.  Former first-rounder Jarrad Davis is now in the last year of his contract after Detroit declined his fifth-year option. Davis' three years have been disappointing — he peaked with a 52.8 overall grade as a rookie in 2017, and while he showed signs of life in coverage in 2018, he dropped back to a 32.6 grade last season, fourth-worst in the NFL. Davis has done his best work as a blitzer, grading in the 70s in all three years and amassing 58 total pressures. His explosiveness made him an attractive developmental first-round pick, but it appears that his best fit is as a subpackage blitzer.  The Lions signed Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots after he rejuvenated his career with a 75.8 regular-season grade, good for 13th in the league last year. Collins is familiar with the defensive system, and he’s yet another versatile weapon who can play all over the defensive formation while providing one of the better blitz threats in the league.  Christian Jones also returns after a disappointing 44.0 overall grade in his second year with the Lions. He’s done his best work in the run game throughout his career, though last season’s 46.5 grade is the worst of his career. Projecting the most improved player for each NFC team in 2020 (Ken Golladay:  NGS shows that Golladay earned the second-most yards on deep targets in the NFL last season (546), which is even more impressive when you consider he averaged the fewest yards of separation on all targets (only 1.9 yards) among those with a minimum of 50 targets. With QB Matthew Stafford returning from an injury that cost him eight games in 2019 and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell projecting to have more run-pass play-calling balance (given Kerryon Johnson returning to health and the selection of D'Andre Swift), it's reasonable to expect Golladay to work with more separation -- and that typically correlates with a better catch rate. NFL defensive line rankings: All 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season (27. DETROIT LIONS:  The Detroit defensive line is still trying to find its identity and consistency under Matt Patricia.  Last season, defensive end Trey Flowers was the only consistently impressive member, earning an overall PFF grade of 83.0 and notching 63 total pressures. That wasn’t the best season Flowers has ever had, but it’s probably a fair return in his first year as their big-money free-agent acquisition.  The issue is that Flowers had very little help. Veterans Mike Daniels and Damon Harrison broke down with injuries and just weren’t the same players they had been in the past. Combined, they were on the field for fewer than 750 snaps, and neither player graded particularly well, especially given their past performances. There also wasn't much in terms of pressure coming from anybody other than Flowers. Devon Kennard had the next highest pressure total, at 43. He is now in Arizona, leaving Romeo Okwara and his brother Julian to be the most likely candidates to bring some heat on the quarterback. Romeo had 34 total pressures on 377 pass rushes last season, and his PFF pass-rushing grade was actually below average (58.2). Meanwhile, Julian was the No. 4 edge rusher on PFF’s Big Board and certainly has the talent to provide pressure, even if he might need a situational role early.  Injuries robbed Da’Shawn Hand of most of his second season after such a strong showing as a rookie, but he is a player who could still feature heavily. In addition, Danny Shelton was brought in from the Patriots to anchor the middle of the line. Shelton is primarily a run-stuffing force, and for added insurance in that area, the team also drafted Utah’s John Penisini in the sixth round.  This defensive front likely relies on finding somebody beyond Trey Flowers to be a consistent force, particularly when it comes to generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. NFC North training camp preview: Packers aim to repeat; Vikings reload (Detroit Lions - Most important position battle: Running back. Running back is a position in need of consistent production and contribution if the Lions are to alleviate the burden on Matthew Stafford's shoulders. Last season was emblematic of Detroit's long-standing problems with the running game, as Kerryon Johnson -- who missed eight games -- led the team with a meager 403 yards rushing. Bo Scarbrough, J.D. McKissic and Ty Johnson each got starts in the absence of Kerryon, who's missed 14 games in his two seasons. On the heels of back-to-back 1,000-yard college campaigns, D'Andre Swift offers up fresh legs, fresh potential and a fresh chance at locating a consistent threat out of the backfield. Swift and Kerryon Johnson are each likely to get their share of carries as they vie for lead-back status -- and to end the Lions' streak without a 1,000-yard rusher, which dates back to 2013 (Reggie Bush).  Biggest strength on roster: Quarterback Matthew Stafford. Going 3-4-1 is hardly sensational, but it's in another universe compared to 0-8. That was how the 2019 Lions fared with Stafford and without. Eleven seasons in, Stafford is the Lions' all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns by spectacular margins. He has been the face of the franchise for some time -- and he's the Lions' best and most important player. Can he remain so after a back injury halted a streak of 136 straight starts? Before his season was interrupted by the injury, he'd compiled a 106.0 quarterback rating and a yards-per-attempt mark of 8.6 -- each career highs -- to go with 312.4 yards and 2.4 touchdowns per outing, which were his best showings since 2011. For the first time since 1952, a Detroit Lion led the league in touchdown catches, as Kenny Golladay hauled in 11, with seven coming over the first eight weeks from Stafford. With Stafford slinging it, the Lions have a shot at moving up and making noise. Without him ... well, the last half of last year can speak to that.  Biggest weakness: Defensive backfield. An NFL-worst 284.4 passing yards per game were allowed by the Lions a season ago. Three-win teams will have weaknesses aplenty, but the Detroit defense came away with an NFL-low seven interceptions and saw its secondary ranked 28th by PFF. During an offseason that featured myriad roster changes, trading away perennial Pro Bowler Darius Slay garnered the most notice, but Slay had a largely lackluster season -- he drew a 56.4 overall grade from PFF. Bringing in Desmond Trufant (who earned a 70.2 grade from PFF) was a very underrated addition that could even be an upgrade in the short term and a larger boon when considering the economics (the Eagles are paying Slay $16.7 million per year over three years, while the Lions are paying Trufant $10.5 million per year over two). And, of course, there's the selection of Ohio State's Jeff Okudah at No. 3 overall. How quickly Okudah can turn around a struggling secondary remains to be seen.  Newcomer/player returning from injury to watch: Linebacker Jamie Collins. The addition of Collins is as important as it is symbolic. Coach Matt Patricia's vision of a Patriots redux in Motown has thus far floundered, and his job is on the line. A year ago, Trey Flowers was the most notable of multiple former New England players to be brought on board by the ex-Pats defensive coordinator. Flowers' seven-sack debut hardly seems like a resounding success. In Collins, the Lions get a versatile 30-year-old linebacker who began 2019 looking like an NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidate, though by the end of the year, he wasn't even a starter in the playoffs. Ranking NFL's eight divisions (3. NFC North:  If these rankings were based on the top-three teams in each division -- or if the Lions didn't exist -- you could probably make the argument that the NFC North should be in the two-spot in these rankings. However, the Lions do exist, which is why this division is ranked third overall. Ironically enough, the Lions probably had the best offseason of any team in the division. Not only did they add multiple potential starters with players like Jamie Collins, Desmond Trufant and Halapoulivaati Vaitai, but Matthew Stafford should also be 100% healthy when the season starts. Of course, saying the Lions had the best offseason isn't really saying much, because the other teams in the division practically handed them the title. The Packers botched the draft, the Vikings let half their defense walk in free agency and the Bears decided not to upgrade at quarterback despite going into the offseason knowing that they needed to make an upgrade at quarterback (And no, Nick Foles does not qualify as an upgrade. That's a lateral move at best).  What this all means is that the NFC North should be a crapshoot in 2020, which makes sense, because this has been one of the most unpredictable divisions in the NFL over the past few years. No NFC division embraces parity quite like the North. For one, this is the only division in the NFL that has produced three different winners over the past three seasons. Ranking the NFL quarterbacks most affected by pressure in 2019 (4. MATTHEW STAFFORD, DETROIT LIONS (-44.7 difference in PFF passing grade when pressured, 38% pressure rate):  Stafford got off to a tremendous start last season. His 81.6 PFF passing grade through nine weeks ranked seventh in the NFL, and he was pushing the ball downfield with success. His 8.2% big-time throw rate — a category that contains accurate downfield passes and tight-window throws — was second among quarterbacks. A lot of that success could be attributed to what he was doing from a clean pocket, though.  His play under pressure wasn’t nearly as impressive, but he did do a decent job of limiting both turnovers (0 interceptions under pressure) and sacks (18 on 120 dropbacks) when pressured. A downfield passing game is going to come with longer-developing routes, giving the defense more time to get to the quarterback. NFL tight end rankings: All 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season (12. DETROIT LIONS:  T.J. Hockenson got off to an outstanding start to his NFL career, catching six passes for 131 yards and a score in his debut in Week 1. However, he slowed down and caught just 26 passes over the rest of the season. Like many tight ends, Hockenson is primed to take a big step forward in Year 2, as he’s an effective route-runner and is as sure-handed as it gets, dropping just three passes over the last three seasons. Hockenson is also an effective run-blocker, so his three-down ability combines with Detroit’s receivers to give them one of the best all-around playmaking units in the league.  Jesse James returns in a backup role coming off a career-low 53.7 overall grade, while 2019 seventh-rounder Isaac Nauta is a solid blocker who doesn’t provide much in the passing game. Predicting one future first-time Pro Bowler for each NFC team (DETROIT LIONS: Frank Ragnow, C, third NFL season: These lists hit their stride when the typist shifts from pitching a right tackle to a thick-necked, meaty center. Readers can't get enough. But in all seriousness, Ragnow feels like the kind of player who propels Lions coach Matt Patricia out of bed in the morning. The former first overall pick has long been one of the supreme arm talents among all the quarterbacks, but he could never lead his team over the top. Many point to the Detroit Lions being unable to surround him with the right talent, coaching or depth. NFL wide receiver rankings: All 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season (7. DETROIT LIONS:  The Lions have a well-rounded group of receivers, starting with Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay on the outside. Jones has been one of the league’s best intermediate (10-19 yard) threats over the past two years, grading at 93.3 in that range. He’s also one of the most sure-handed receivers in the league, dropping just 24 passes on 390 catchable targets since entering the league in 2012. Golladay has emerged as one of the best vertical threats in the league, tying for 18th with a 79.3 receiving grade last season. Plus, his 930 yards on deep (20-plus yard) passes rank third-highest in the NFL over the past two years.  While Golladay and Jones make for an excellent one-two punch, Danny Amendola is a perfect complement in the slot, as he picked up 678 yards in his first year in Detroit and was “open” on 73.9% of his targets, the fourth-best rate in the NFL last season. The No. 4 spot will be a battle between former Packers wideout Geronimo Allison, 2019 sixth-rounder Travis Fulgham and rookie fifth-rounder Quintez Cephus. Allison showed flashes in Green Bay, but he’s graded in the 50.0s in two of his past three seasons.  The other X-factor is Marvin Hall, a 4.4 speedster who played the deep threat role perfectly last year; he caught seven passes for 261 yards, averaging an incredible 37.3 yards per reception. Expect the Lions to use Hall in a similar, field-stretching role. Ranking all 32 RB1s heading into 2020: Saquon Barkley at No. 6 (28.  Kerryon Johnson (2019 stats: 8 games | 113 att | 403 rush yds | 3.6 ypc | 3 rush TDs | 10 rec | 127 rec yds | 1 rec TD):  This was a tough choice between Johnson and rookie D'Andre Swift, who made it clear last week that he's ready to compete "full force" for snaps, but I'm sticking with Johnson. He's been productive when healthy and has two years of NFL experience, while Swift is battling the challenges of a limited offseason. PFN’s Top 100 NFL Players of 2020 (87.  Kenny Golladay, WR, Detroit Lions:  Despite only having Matthew Stafford for eight games, Kenny Golladay still recorded a noteworthy season in his third NFL campaign. With only 65 receptions for Detroit, Golladay was the definition of a big-play threat. The Northern Illinois phenom tallied receptions of 75, 66, 59, 47 and 42 on the season. Golladay ranked in the top 10 in receiving with 1,190 yards while grabbing double-digit touchdowns for the first time in his career. The third-year receiver topped the NFL with 11 touchdown receptions in 2019.  The former third-round pick capped off his breakout season with a PFN OSM score of 27.69 in 2019, the highest score of his young career.
