NFL Week 4 Preview, Stats, Storylines for Five-Game FOX Slate (Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions (1 p.m. ET) - On paper, this is one of the NFL's most prolific offenses vs. one of the league's toughest defenses. The Browns, fresh off a surprise upset of the Packers, have the league's No. 1 total defense, giving up just 204 yards per game, and the top run defense, holding opponents to 57 yards on 2.3 yards per carry through three weeks. The Lions, on the other side, are tied for second in scoring offense, and rank third in total offense and fourth in rushing offense behind the 1-2 punch of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.   This is also a meeting of the NFL's top two sack defenses on a per-pass basis — 11 sacks each, led by Cleveland's Myles Garrett with four, and a breakout player in Detroit's Al-Quadin Muhammad, who has 3.5, already halfway to his career-best of six sacks. Can 40-year-old Browns QB Joe Flacco avoid turnovers? His four interceptions have Cleveland minus-4 in turnover margin, which could be trouble if the Browns fall behind.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-week-4-preview-stats-storylines-five-game-fox-slate-eagles-bucs

Ranking the NFL's highest-graded run blockers and defenders in Week 3 (Tackle: Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions – 99.3.  Penei Sewell put on a show Monday night. He was completely dominant, and his 99.3 run-blocking grade is the highest single-game grade for an offensive lineman in all of PFFs history. Sewell has always been a dominant run blocker: He has never recorded a run-block grade lower than 83.0 in his more than four seasons in the NFL.  EDGE: Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions – 93.1.  Aidan Hutchinson usually makes his name as a pass rusher, but it was his ability in the run game that shined. His 93.1 run-defense grade was by far the highest of his career. His one run stop in the game was a huge forced fumble on Derrick Henry that swung the contest in the Lions’ favor and ultimately led to a huge win on Monday night.): https://www.pff.com/news/ranking-the-nfls-highest-graded-run-blockers-and-defenders-in-week-3

NFL Week 4 Preview: Schedule, storylines, matchups to watch and betting spreads (Cleveland Browns vs. Detroit Lions (-8.5):  Storyline of the game: NFL’s best offense vs NFL’s best defense.  Both the Lions and Browns are coming off huge wins against two of the top teams in the NFL, and now turn their attention toward another sizable challenge. Through the first three weeks of the season, these two teams lay claim to a pair of the highest-graded units in the NFL. The Lions hold an NFL-best 82.1 team offensive grade, and the Browns boast the top mark on the defensive side of the ball with an 88.0.  Matchup to watch: Lions RG Tate Ratledge vs. Browns DI Maliek Collins - The Browns’ pass rush is more than just Myles Garrett. Maliek Collins has been excellent on the interior as well to start the year. Powered by a 22.4% pass-rush win rate, Collins holds the highest PFF pass-rush grade (91.5) among interior defenders.  Lions first-year guard Tate Ratledge has made strides over the last three weeks, showing consistent improvements week over week. However, difficulties in pass protection are still present, with Ratledge’s 54.8 PFF pass-blocking grade ranking 44th out of 74 qualifying guards.  Additional News:  Lions LT Taylor Decker (shoulder) and EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad (knee) did not practice to start the week.  Browns place LT Dawand Jones (knee) on season-ending IR, sign T Thayer Munford Jr.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-4-preview-schedule-storylines-matchups-to-watch-and-betting-spreads

Week 4 Picks

SN Bender (Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions (-8.5) Sunday, 1 p.m., Fox.  The Browns are riding high with a nasty defense that showed out against the Packers. The Lions are a different story at home. Look for Dan Campbell to stay aggressive in the passing game with Jared Goff, who had five TD passes at home in Week 2. Detroit's defense will have to slow Quinshon Judkins, who had 18 carries for 94 yards in Week 3.   Pick: Lions 27, Browns 14):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-4/1e36ed5c1a640b97027870d7

SN Iyer (Browns at Lions (-8.5, 45.5 o/u) Sunday 1 p.m. ET, Fox.  The Lions play their best offense at home. The Browns play their best defense at home. Nothing needs to give here with Detroit rocking Cleveland with explosive pass plays and stopping the run.  Pick: Lions win 27-14 and cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-4/1e36ed5c1a640b97027870d7

CBS Prisco (Cleveland Browns (+8.5) at Detroit Lions:  The Lions are riding high after blowing out the Ravens on Monday night. They were dominant on offense and the defense got after Lamar Jackson. On a short week playing this Browns defense won't be easy. Cleveland is the top-ranked defense in the league. That will be in play here as they keep the game close. Pick: Lions 23, Browns 17):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/priscos-week-4-nfl-picks-buccaneers-eagles-chiefs-ravens-packers-cowboys/

Pro Picks: Micah Parsons and the Packers will beat Dak Prescott and the Cowboys convincingly (Cleveland (1-2) at Detroit (2-1) - Line: Lions minus 9 1/2.  Myles Garrett and a tough defense will keep the Browns in games. The Lions didn’t need much time to adjust to new coordinators. Their offense and defense are clicking. Both teams are 2-1 ATS this season. Browns vs. Lions Final Score Prediction for NFL Week 4 (Bet on Detroit to Cover) (Browns vs. Lions Final Score Prediction - Earlier this week, SI’s NFL betting insider Iain MacMillan shared his favorite bet for this game in his Road to 272 column, and he’s taking the Lions to cover: The Cleveland Browns have managed to hang on against two of their three opponents in terms of covering the spread, but I still think they're one of the worst teams in the league. Their offense is atrocious, ranking 29th in success rate and 30th in EPA per play. They're going to have to do better than that to keep up with the elite Lions offense, especially with the Browns playing on the road.  I think Detroit runs away with this one in impressive fashion.  The Cleveland defense has been impressive this season, but this a brutal matchup on the road against a Detroit team that is No. 2 in EPA/Play on offense.  On top of that, the Detroit defense is No. 1 in EPA/Rush, which could make things tough on Joe Flacco and company moving the ball. The Cleveland passing game has been shaky, and the lone bright spot was last week’s showing from rookie running back Quinshon Judkins (18 carries, 94 yards).   I’ll back Detroit to win big at home.  Final Score Prediction: Lions 27, Browns 13):  https://www.si.com/betting/browns-vs-lions-final-score-prediction-for-nfl-week-4-bet-on-detroit-to-cover

Lions-Browns Week 4 score predictions from MLive's beat writers (24-7, 28-14, 31-10):  https://www.mlive.com/lions/2025/09/lions-browns-week-4-score-predictions-from-mlives-beat-writers.html

CBS Breech (Browns (1-2) at Lions (2-1) - I never thought I would write this about the Cleveland Browns, but they might be the most underrated team in the NFL. Look, I know we all love to laugh about the Browns, and for the first two weeks of the season, they made it easy, but this team is for real.  The Browns have held all three of their opponents under 250 yards this year, which doesn't seem possible when you consider that they've faced the Bengals (with Joe Burrow), the Ravens and the Packers. The defense is so good that if the Browns can just get somewhat competent play from their offense and special teams, they could pull off a lot of surprise wins this year. Let's check out the stats:   Week 1: The Browns more than doubled the Bengals' yardage output (327-141), but they lost because their kicker missed a field goal and an extra point in the fourth quarter.  Week 2: Yes the Browns got smoked 41-17 by the Ravens, but don't blame the defense. The Browns held Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry to a combined 36 rushing yards, marking the first time the duo had ever been held under 100. I repeat: No one had EVER held Jackson and Henry under 100 combined rushing yards and the Browns held them under 40. The Browns also outgained the Ravens 323-242, but they couldn't get out of their own way on offense or on special teams: There was an interception, a lost fumble and they gave up a blocked punt. The Ravens had three scoring drives of less than 25 yards. Week 3: The Browns held the Packers to just 230 yards and they still almost lost to Green Bay because the offense was non-existent for three and a half quarters. But then Joe Flacco came alive to engineer three scoring drives in the final 10 minutes and unlike Week 1, Andre Szmyt actually came through with a game-winning field goal.  The Browns have faced three very good offenses, but the defense hasn't blinked: They've given up the fewest yards in the NFL, they have the third-most sacks and they're only surrendering 2.3 yards per rushing attempt, which is the best number in the league.  If you can get pressure on Jared Goff, the Lions are going to struggle and we saw that a Week 1 game where the Detroit got dominated by the Packers. If I trusted the Browns' offense (or their special teams) at all I would take Cleveland by DOUBLE DIGITS, but I don't, so I'm going to say the Browns win for the second straight week on a last second field goal. With the Lions coming off a big win over the Ravens on Monday night, this feels like the perfect spot for a letdown.   And before Lions fans get upset about my pick, just remember that I apparently have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to picking games involving NFC North teams this year.  PICK: Browns 20-17 over Lions):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-4-picks-score-predictions-browns-shock-lions-undefeated-eagles-finally-lose/

Non-Score Predictions:

ESPN (All 11 pick the Lions to win):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/picks

63 pick the Lions to win.  1 picks the Browns to win.  Average Predicted Score (1150-602/43):  Lions 27 Browns 14.

Jared Goff, Lions Made Sure to Keep Receipts From Detroit's Critics After Week 1:  https://www.si.com/nfl/jared-goff-lions-receipts-detroit-critics-week-1

Albert Breer’s Mailbag: Why Jared Goff Is the Most Under-Appreciated QB in the NFL (Detroit Lions - From Ronnie (@Tray4o): Do you think Jared Goff is one of the most under-appreciated NFL QBs today?  Ronnie, yes, I do. Let’s do a blind test, with statistics from the past two years.  Quarterback A: 31 games, 666-of-1,038 (64.2%), 7,727 yds, 44 TDs, 19 INTs, 93.07 rating.  Quarterback B: 34 games, 797-of-1,144 (69.7%), 9,204 yds, 67 TDs, 24 INTs, 104.44 rating.  Quarterback C: 32 games, 793-of-1,178 (67.3%), 8,111 yds, 53 TDs , 25 INTs, 93.02 rating.  Quarterback A? That’s Matthew Stafford—and, of course, Goff was the salary dump in his trade from the Lions to the Rams four-and-a-half years ago. Quarterback B is Patrick Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl champion and MVP, and two-time league MVP. And Quarterback C is … you guessed it, Jared Thomas Goff.  That’s not to say he’s better than those two other guys. It is to say that perception drives a lot of this stuff, and I think folks have real trouble seeing a former first-round pick discarded by the teams that drafted them fairly. It happens with Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Geno Smith, and I think it’ll affect the way people assess Daniel Jones as a Colt, too. And it most certainly affects how people see Goff.  Albert Breer: Lions BULLIED Ravens for BIG WIN - From doug mccready (@dgmccready): The Lions shocked the world on Monday night in Baltimore. Does this propel them to conference favorites with Philly?  Doug, I don’t see why not. Last week, after the Lions trounced the Bears, I had Jahmyr Gibbs on the phone, and the big question I wanted an answer to wasn’t complicated: What happened to you guys in Week 1?  Obviously, part of it was a Packers defense that now appears to have ascended to an elite level. Still, given how prolific the Lions have been the past two years on offense, that they’d be held out of the end zone until garbage time, even with the loss of Ben Johnson accounted for, was stunning. Gibbs explained to me that Detroit had communication issues that short-circuited everything at Lambeau. That made sense, given that this was the first game after Detroit lost two of its three chief communicators (QB, OC, center) in the offseason.  So with the lessons from that in tow, over the two games since, the Lions have scored 90 points, totaling 937 yards. They’ve been balanced (401 yards rushing/536 yards passing) and efficient (7.6 yards per play), and controlled every game through an offensive line that’s given the Dan Campbell program its identity over the past few years, but has two new, young starters at guard, in second-year man Christian Mahogany and rookie Tate Ratledge.  In other words, after a quick adjustment period, the Lions are the Lions again.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/albert-breer-mailbag-why-jared-goff-is-under-appreciated

Tate Ratledge, G, Lions.  Many thought Detroit would have some early-season issues after changing out offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for John Morton, while also having new starters at both guards and the center position, including a second-round rookie in Ratledge.  Instead, after an ugly Week 1 loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field, the Lions have become the powerhouse we’ve seen in recent seasons. Across the past two weeks, Detroit has registered 90 points in wins over the Bears and Ravens, while racking up 177 and 224 rushing yards, respectively, in those victories.  In the passing game, Jared Goff has also been kept clean in those two victories, with Ratledge and his mates refusing to give up a single sack.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/nfl-rookie-rankings-browns-draft-haul

NFL All-Rookie Team: Cam Skattebo, Emeka Egbuka Among PFSN’s Highest-Graded Rookies in Week 3 (OL: Tate Ratledge, Detroit Lions (86.2, B).  Tate Ratledge was not only the highest-graded rookie offensive lineman this week, but ranked third overall among all OL behind Penei Sewell (88.8) and O’Cyrus Torrence (86.7). The Lions right guard earned the sixth-highest run-blocking grade among all offensive linemen this week, paving the way for Detroit’s 224-yard night on the ground.  Ratledge also allowed only one pressure on 30 dropbacks, his best pass protection performance in three games. Right guard felt like a potential weakness in Detroit after steady veteran Kevin Zeitler departed in free agency, but Ratledge has looked like a worthy successor early in his career.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-all-rookie-team-awards-week-3-2025/

NFL Players of the Week: Caleb Williams, David Montgomery Headline PFSN’s Highest-Graded Players in Week 3 (RB: David Montgomery, Detroit Lions (91.9, A-).  The Knuckles portion of Detroit’s backfield was the best running back in Week 3. David Montgomery recorded the best RBi grade of the season so far with his career-high 91.9 grade in the Lions’ Monday night win over the Baltimore Ravens.  Montgomery racked up 151 yards on just 12 carries, ripping off gains of 72 and 31 to boost his stat line. Beyond the chunk runs, though, seven of his 12 carries were successful by EPA, and only one carry lost yardage. As a result, Montgomery recorded the highest RBi grade in a week for the fifth time in his career, and first since Week 11 of 2023 against his former team, the Bears.  OT: Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions (88.8, B+).  Penei Sewell’s 88.8 grade was the highest of any offensive lineman in Week 3. It’s the second time in Sewell’s career that he’s led all linemen in OLi grade for a week (2023, Week 16 vs. the Vikings), as well as the fourth time he’s led all offensive tackles.  Sewell allowed just 1 pressure on 30 dropbacks, but also recorded the best run-blocking grade of any OL this week. The All-Pro right tackle continues to cement his reputation as the best run-blocking tackle in the league, as Monday night’s showing moved him up to second among OTs this season behind Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-players-awards-2025-week-3/

Week 4 Power Rankings

PFN (2. Detroit Lions - Last Week’s Ranking: 4.  Offense Rank: 3.  Defense Rank: 22.  Playoff Odds: 69.60%.  Since he debuted in 2016, Jared Goff has had four games with five passing touchdowns and no interceptions, including his stellar play in the Detroit Lions’ blowout win over the Bears. That’s tied with Patrick Mahomes for the second-most in the NFL over that span and trails only Lamar Jackson, who has six.  Any time your offense scores 52 points, you have to feel pretty good about your team’s performance. After a slow start to the year in their loss to the Packers in Week 1, the Lions bounced back in a major way on Sunday and looked like the powerhouse they’ve been the last few seasons.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/week-4-nfl-power-rankings-2025/

ESPN (3. Detroit Lions (2-1) - Week 3 result: Beat the Ravens 38-30.  Week 3 ranking: 5.  Biggest issue on defense: Pass rush outside of DE Aidan Hutchinson.  Through Week 3, the Lions are tied for a league-low 22.0% pass rush win rate. They've relied on Hutchinson, who has been consistently double-teamed as he tries to find a groove after returning from a season-ending leg injury in 2024. Detroit lacks depth at the position, as defensive end Marcus Davenport (chest) is now on injured reserve. The Lions are counting on fellow end Al-Quadin Muhammad to step up (he had 2.5 sacks against the Ravens). Also, the return of defensive tackle Alim McNeill (ACL injury) and end Josh Paschal (reserve/non-football injury list) at some point this season will help fix those issues. But Detroit did look impressive in tallying seven sacks against the Ravens on Monday night. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46283631/nfl-week-4-power-rankings-poll-32-teams-2025-biggest-issues-defense

SI (3. Detroit Lions (2–1) - Last week’s ranking: No. 5.  Last week’s result: beat Ravens, 38–30.  This week: vs. Cleveland.  Look out, Andy Reid. NFL.com (3.  Detroit Lions:  I think we can bury any coordinator concerns about John Morton and Kelvin Sheppard here and now. The Lions were the tougher, smarter and better-prepared team on Monday night, repeatedly coming up with clutch plays in a hostile road environment. The Lions delivered the first punch. The Ravens countered, landing a few haymakers, too. But Detroit never came close to shriveling up, playing exceptional three-phase football and essentially beating the Ravens at their own game. Four rushing TDs in Baltimore? Seven sacks of Lamar Jackson? Three-for-three on fourth down? Elevated stuff, borne out of coaching and preparation. There were a dozen players I could highlight, but please, out of respect to Morton and Sheppard -- who each called a brilliant game in the MNF spotlight -- can we now end the Ben Johnson/Aaron Glenn questions? That narrative is dead.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-2025-nfl-season

FTW (4. Detroit Lions - Last week: 7.  A Week 1 stinker in Lambeau Field feels like it happened three months ago. Dan Campbell has his guys firing on all cylinders again, as offensive coordinator John Morton is running a more straightforward (but effective) offense. Meanwhile, I can't remember the last time anyone sacked Lamar Jackson seven times. That's a credit to new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. The Lions remain extremely for real. — RZ):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2025/09/22/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-colts-49ers-buccaneers/86293455007/

The Athletic (No. 5 (Last Week: 6) - From Josh Kendall and Chad Graff:  After some Week 1 rust, Jared Goff and the Lions offense are back to the aggressiveness and fun play calling that were so successful under Johnson. Goff benefited from a strong running game Monday night but played well, including a perfect pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown late on fourth-and-2. PFF (5. Detroit Lions (No change) - Chance of making playoffs: 71%.  Chance of winning Super Bowl: 6%.  The Lions have rebounded exceptionally well after their Week 1 loss to the Packers. Top 15 NFL rookies through Week 3 (11. G Tate Ratledge, Detroit Lions (74.0).  Ratledge dominated against Baltimore’s defensive line, grading out as Week 3’s second-best guard (91.4). While he finished with a 68.5 PFF pass-blocking grade, he was unbeatable as a run blocker, recording an 86.1 zone PFF run-blocking grade across 18 snaps and leading the position with a 93.5 gap PFF run-blocking grade across 16 snaps.  The second-round pick from Georgia is the highest-graded rookie guard through three weeks. Ratledge owns a 54.8 PFF pass-blocking grade, having surrendered five pressures at a 4.9% rate. Run blocking has been his strength, as he holds a 75.9 PFF grade in that department (tied for sixth overall). He boasts a 74.7 PFF run-blocking grade in zone schemes (eighth best) and an 82.1 mark in gap schemes (second best). Ratledge also ranks second among all guards in impact-block rate (24.1%).):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-top-15-rookies-week-3-2025

Biggest weakness for every NFL playoff contender (Lions: Terrion Arnold's struggles - Odds to make playoffs: -240.  SportsLine playoff chance: 79.7%.  The Lions showed they're not going anywhere with an impressive win in Baltimore in Week 3. The new offensive line is taking big strides. The pass rush came up with seven sacks, and the linebackers and defensive line did a great job of corralling Jackson and Derrick Henry as runners. Dan Campbell spoke many times about how proud of his team he was, and he's right. Fixing Arnold's struggles, though, is next on the to-do list. He's allowing the sixth-most yards per attempt as the primary defender (10.6) among 77 cornerbacks who have been the primary defender at least 10 times. He's tied for 92nd out of 102 cornerbacks in PFF's grades.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/biggest-weakness-for-every-nfl-playoff-contender-so-far-ravens-cant-stop-the-run-chiefs-lack-juice/

NFL Game Recaps: Week 3 (Lions 38, Ravens 30:  We had a glimpse of Baltimore’s struggles early in this game. The contest was tied at seven, and Baltimore pinned Detroit deep in its own territory. It looked like the Ravens would force a punt when the Lions were in a third-and-long at their own 4-yard line, but Detroit converted a first down and went on to score a touchdown on the possession that spanned 98 yards and nearly 11 minutes on the game clock.  The Ravens couldn’t get off the field for most of the evening, as Detroit gashed them on the ground with their two talented running backs. It was quite apparent that the Ravens missed Pro Bowl defensive tackle Justin Madubuike and linebacker Kyle Van Noy, as their ground defense was miserable without them. Jaire Alexander’s absence in the secondary was also impactful.  Meanwhile, the Ravens couldn’t run at all. Derrick Henry was stymied in the backfield and fumbled once again while down 28-24. Lamar Jackson, meanwhile, had some great deep throws in this game, particularly to Mark Andrews and Rashod Bateman, but took seven sacks, two of which were losses of 19 and 18 yards. Jackson couldn’t even scramble, as Detroit’s defensive line locked him down and got a bit lucky with some shoe-string tackles.  Despite this lopsided affair, the Ravens trailed by just seven in the fourth quarter with possession. They were forced to punt, however, and while it appeared as though they also forced Detroit to punt on fourth-and-2, the Lions went for it and converted it with a Jared Goff pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. David Montgomery then galloped for a 31-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.):  https://walterfootball.com/nflreview.php
