Mock Draft Round Up #5

Walterfootball Charlie (7. S Grant Delpit:  The Lions could use a difference-maker in the deep middle of their defense.  Delpit has 50 tackles, one interception and five passes broken up this season. In 2018, he was a very productive player for LSU with 74 tackles, 9.5 tackle for a loss, five sacks, nine passes batted and five interceptions. As a freshman, Delpit totaled 60 tackles with eight passes broken up and an interception. The 6-foot-3, 208-pounder has excellent instincts to go along with a good combination of size and speed.  42.  Cameron Dantzler, CB:  Teez Tabor was a bust for the Lions, and they could use more corner talent to go with Darius Slay.  Dantzler has 31 tackles with two interceptions, seven passes broken up and a fumble recovery this year. Team sources have said that Dantzler was a player who jumped out at them in 2018 despite them not watching him closely as he was yet to be eligible for the NFL draft. The sophomore totaled 43 tackles with nine passes broken up and two interceptions in 2018. Dantzler (6-2, 195) has good size, and the questions will be how well he runs and if he is fluid enough to maintain coverage and prevent separation.) (11-29-19):  http://walterfootball.com/draft2020charlie.php

Draftwire (7. Detroit Lions - DT Derrick Brown.  40. Detroit Lions - CB Jaylon Johnson.  71. Detroit Lions - DE Alton Robinson.  104. RB Chuba Hubbard) (11-29-19):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/gallery/2020-nfl-mock-draft-3-rounds-week-12-joe-burrow-tua-tagovailoa-chase-young/

CBS Josh Edwards (7. Lions - Isaiah Simmons:  Simmons is a very gifted player that can wear many hats for that Lions defense.) (11-28-19):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2020-nfl-mock-draft-cowboys-pick-up-a-cornerback-tua-heads-to-tampa-and-more-thanksgiving-treats/

Walterfootball (10.  Detroit Lions - LB Kenneth Murray:  Matt Patricia needs to find a centerpiece to his defense, as the Lions have struggled to defend the middle of the field for quite some time. Here's a potential solution.  Kenneth Murray was co-Defensive Freshman of the Year in the Big XII, thriving in coverage for the Sooners. He broke an Oklahoma record for tackles in a game with 28. Murray has excellent instincts and has great speed and athleticism for coverage.  42. RB Najee Harris:  Kerryon Johnson hasn't been able to stay healthy, so I wonder if the Lions would be willing to spend a second-day pick on a running back to complement him.  Najee Harris was one of the top recruits in the country in 2017, and he showed off his talents as a freshman. He's been tremendous again this season.) (11-27-19):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2020.php

Draft Tek (7. Lions - OT Austin Jackson:  It's that time of year again, Lions' fans, the weather is getting colder, the leaves have amost fully fallen, Christmas music is slowly seeping its way onto the radio, and the Lions are in last place in the NFC North. Traditionally, the Lions have always been great reminders of what is truly important on Turkey Day: family, friends, and enjoying each other's company. It's not often the Lions have played in a meaningful Thanksgiving Day game, and this year is no different. Objectively speaking, the last meaningful game the Lions played on Thanksgiving was in 2016 against the Minnesota Vikings (both teams 6-4 heading into the contest). The Lions would end up winning 16-13 and finish 9-7, 1 game ahead of the Vikings to clinch a Wild Card berth. This year, hosting the 5-6 Chicago Bears, both teams on the surface seem to have nothing to play for. However, Bears' QB Mitchell Trubisky and Lions' Head Coach Matt Patricia are looking to this contest as a sort of "job-saving" type of game.  Trubisky has been, for a lack of a better word, bad. His 10 touchdowns to 6 interceptions on the 2019 campaign are well below last season's output of 24 TD and 12 INT. Also considering his yards per completion is a league-worst 5.8 this season compared to 2018 at 7.4, this has not been a banner year for the QB. The same theme of regression can be seen in Patricia's defense from 2018 to 2019. The Lions finished last season as a top 10 total defense, and now rank 29th. They have given up at least 420 yards to opposing offenses 6 times in 11 games. Facing Chicago earlier this season, Trubisky had his best passer rating of the season against Detroit.  This Thursday's Thanksgiving Day game is the proverbial, "something's gotta give" game. Whether it's Trubisky yet again having his way with Patricia's defense, or Patricia saving his job and giving us Lions' fans some glimmer of hope into 2020. This was not what Bob Quinn sold the Lions' faithful. Patricia's current record of 9-17-1 is a major regression when comparing it to Caldwell's first two seasons of 18-14. In fact, Caldwell won more games in his first season (11) than Patricia currently has won in two. The media is starting to chirp about Patricia's hot seat and while being without Stafford is a convenient scapegoat, Mitchell Trubisky's season numbers would suggest a Lions win. Then again, losing in Washington to a struggling Dwayne Haskins doesn't give me much confidence heading into Thursday. Simply put, Patricia and this Lions organization need a win on Thursday. If they don't, fans seeking a change can't be faulted. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 39. ILB Malik Harrison. 71. LB K'Lavon Chaisson. 103.  WR Devin Duvernay.  139.  OC T.J. McCoy.  166. QB Anthony Gordon) (11-27-19):   https://www.drafttek.com/2020-NFL-Mock-Draft/2020-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round-1.asp

CBS Chris Trapasso (7. Lions - LB Isaiah Simmons:  Simmons is a do-everything second-level defender who'd be a welcomed addition to Detroit's porous defense.) (11-27-19):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2020-nfl-mock-draft-chargers-gamble-on-tua-tagovailoa-in-top-11-dolphins-get-justin-herbert-late/

CBS Ryan Wilson (7. Lions - CB Kristian Fulton:  The Lions are a bad football team, especially on defense, and you could target any position and improve this roster. Fulton is the No. 2 CB in this class who would give Detroit another playmaker opposite Darius Slay.) (11-26-19):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2020-nfl-mock-draft-giants-keep-losing-but-land-chase-young-how-far-does-justin-herbert-free-fall/

Tony Pauline (11) Detroit Lions: Isaiah Simmons, OLB, Clemson:  Simmons is the off the ball linebacker the Lions need. He brings great athleticism and ball skills, something he showed as a redshirt freshman when he lined up at safety. Simmons will be a top 20 pick if he enters the draft, something I expect he will do if Clemson makes a serious push towards the championship game.) (11-21-19):   https://www.profootballnetwork.com/tony-pauline-2020-nfl-mock-draft-v1/

Sporting News (10. Detroit Lions (3-6-1) Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina:  The Lions invested in Trey Flowers at defensive end, but they've struggled against the run this season. For help in that area as well as getting inside pressure on the QB, Kinlaw makes a lot of sense. Damon Harrison is 30, and both Mike Daniels and A'Shawn Robinson are pending free agents. Kinlaw has been a big-time inside disruptor for the Gamecocks with 5.5 sacks in 10 games. At 6-6, 310 pounds, he would be a great fit for Matt Patricia.). SI Mock Draft (11. Detroit Lions: Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama:  The younger brother of Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs, Trevon has the length, speed, physicality and ball skills to give Detroit an upgrade opposite Darius Slay. This selection would also provide them insurance as Slay is slated to become a free agent after the 2020 season.) (11-13-19):  https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/11/13/nfl-mock-draft-2020-joe-burrow-andrew-thomas-chase-young

PFF Mock Draft (12. DETROIT LIONS – S GRANT DELPIT, LSU:  With each passing missed tackle, we start to worry about Delpit a little more. He now has 13 misses this season on 54 attempts. That’s bad. On the other hand, he’s only allowed 5-of-9 targets for 68 yards all year. That’s good. The latter carries more weight, but the former is a massive concern.) Two-thirds of the way through the season and the Lions are in the same place they were two months ago. As coach Matt Patricia said, they are trying to "break through that thing that's stopping us right now and smash that so we can get this thing going." Except Detroit hasn't done that, and it's different versions of the same story every week -- an offense that does well enough to win and a defense that fails at key moments. Five consecutive losses have ended the meaningful part of Detroit's season, and the next month could determine what things look like in 2020 and beyond. -- Michael Rothstein):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/nfl_32for32120119/week-13-nfl-takeaways-biggest-stories-lessons-every-game

NFL Thanksgiving games: Everything you need to know (Bears at Lions:  1. Trubisky taking care of the ball:  The Bears are at their best when quarterback Mitchell Trubisky makes smart decisions and avoids forcing throws into tight windows. The problem is that Trubisky has been susceptible to stretches of carelessness. It has often led to turnovers or drives stalling out and has hampered Trubisky from moving the chains or generating big plays. Trubisky’s season-high for passing yards was 278 and was reached Sunday against the Giants. But the Lions rank 30th in the NFL in passing defense, allowing 275.5 yards per game. This presents a chance for Trubisky to put up big numbers.  2. Lions' rushing attack:  Undrafted rookie QB David Blough will make his first career start for Detroit, so the ground game will be critical for the Lions. With starting running back Kerryon Johnson recovering from a knee injury on injured reserve, Detroit’s rushing game had been struggling. Then the team signed Bo Scarbrough to the active roster. In two games, Scarbrough has 153 yards and one score on 32 carries for a solid 4.8 yards-per-carry average. His production has helped Detroit sustain drives and possess the ball for longer. Chicago has a stout rushing defense, however, allowing just 96.8 yards per game.   3. Kickstart:  Another issue the Bears have faced this season – it’s a carryover from last season, really – is inconsistency in the kicking game. Eddy Piñeiro has been better than previous kickers Chicago has used, but he still hasn’t been consistent. Over the past five games, Piñeiro has missed four of his nine field goal attempts and has missed two of seven extra points. Four of Chicago’s last five games – three of which have been losses – have been decided by one score. And in close games, accuracy in the kicking game could prove to be the difference.):   https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2019/11/27/nfl-thanksgiving-schedule-live-stream-games-tv-channel/4319408002/

3 questions for Detroit Lions before Thanksgiving game vs. Chicago:  https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2019/11/27/3-questions-for-detroit-lions-before-thanksgiving-game-vs-chicago/

What to watch for in Thanksgiving tripleheader (Chicago Bears (5-6) at Detroit Lions (3-7-1): 1. A season ago at this time, the Bears defeated the Lions, 23-16, on Thanksgiving. Matthew Stafford was quarterbacking Detroit and Chase Daniel was quarterbacking Chicago. It's the opposite this time around as the Lions have backup Jeff Driskel taking the reins as Stafford's season might well be done. (Editor's note: The Lions announced Wednesday night that rookie David Blough will start at quarterback in place of the injured Driskel.) Daniel is still the backup and Mitchell Trubisky is still the starter, though it's come with a huge helping of scrutiny as the Bears offense is 29th in the all the NFL land. Trubisky has been woeful with his 80.5 rating (30th), 5.8 yards per attempt (32nd) and 185.8 yards a game (32nd) providing ample evidence of his struggles. Facing a Lions defense that's 30th against the pass (29th overall), this is a game in which Trubisky has to show signs of life. Still, one would be hard-pressed to think the Khalil Mack-led defense won't lead the way if a win is to be had. Having allowed just 17.1 points per game (fourth in the NFL), the Chicago defense might not be as dominant as a season ago, but it's still excellent. Mack's 6.5 sacks are getting some notice in a negative light as more are expected, but he's still impacting the game on nearly every play and tied for the league lead with five forced fumbles.  2. Kenny Golladay has been putting forth the breakout season many predicted and/or hoped for with 43 grabs for 792 yards and eight touchdowns. Those eight touchdowns are matched by teammate Marvin Jones and tied for second in the NFL. However, it should be of little surprise that the sidelining of Stafford has also stunted their production. In Driskel's three starts, Golladay hasn't caught more than four balls in a game and has just one touchdown over those three games. Jones has done a bit better, but hasn't had more than five catches in any of those games, hasn't had more than 46 yards receiving in each of the last two contests and has two touchdowns -- though scoring in bunches isn't new to him. Perhaps the most positive surprise during the Lions' most recent travails has been running back Bo Scarbrough. Signed to the active roster just the day before making his NFL debut in Week 11, he had a touchdown and 55 yards in 14 carries against the Cowboys. Last week, he had 98 yards in 18 carries against Washington. Kerryon Johnson has a bright future in Motown, but he is injury-prone and Scarbrough has at least shown he belongs in the NFL with his performances during these dim days in Detroit.):  http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001081193/article/what-to-watch-for-in-thanksgiving-tripleheader

NFL on Thanksgiving: Previewing All Three Games (BEARS (5-6) AT LIONS (3-7-1), 12:30 p.m. ET, FOX:  This is a matchup of bottom-dwelling NFC North teams that really makes you wish the NFL could flex Thanksgiving games. This great nation has been subjected to a lot of bad Lions football over the decades they’ve played on Turkey Day, and this year is no different.  The Detroit quarterback situation remains up in the air heading into Thursday’s game. Lions QB Matthew Stafford has missed three straight games because of fractured bones in his back; ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team has discussed shutting down Stafford for the season, but the quarterback is “maniacal” about playing again this year.  It looks like the Bears will likely face backup QB Jeff Driskel again, who is coming off an awful loss (207 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs) at Washington, but the backup QB also appeared as “limited” on Monday’s estimated practice report with a sore hamstring. Driskel played well against Chicago’s tough defense in Week 11, rushing for 37 yards on five carries and completing 27-of-46 passes for 269 yards, one touchdown and one interception. But if Driskel can’t go, make way for third-stringer David Blough, who took reps with the first-team offense on Tuesday.  Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky is struggling this season, but he had one of his best performances this season against the underachieving Lions defense. Detroit is allowing 275.5 passing yards per game (third-worst in the league), 396.2 yards per game (fifth-worst) and have the fewest interceptions in the league (4).  Against the NFL’s worst offense on Sunday, the Lions defense gave up two fourth-quarter field-goal drives, and those six points squandered a late three-point lead. If the Lions lose another one, against a bad Bears team on national TV, Detroit head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn will be firmly on the hot seat.):   https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/11/27/nfl-thanksgiving-preview-bears-lions-bills-cowboys-saints-falcons

He tried to do his best Bill Belichick impression — something I mistakenly thought he’d avoid — and it fell flat in Detroit’s locker room. It may be harsh to give up on Patricia after only two seasons, but running it back another year would just be a waste of a season.):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/11/nfl-coaches-hot-seat-jason-garrett

The NFL Hot Seat: Giants might need to shut down Saquon Barkley soon (SCALDING: Lions coach Matt Patricia might need a good Thanksgiving
When your season is spiraling out of control and you lose to a 1-9 team, everyone is under scrutiny. Matthew Stafford injury or not, you can’t lose to the Washington Redskins these days.  Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel laid out how the Lions cited mediocrity not being good enough when they fired Jim Caldwell, who had way more success than Patricia. What happens when the Lions are less than mediocre?  Thursday might help determine the futures of Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn. It’s tough to tell what Lions ownership is thinking, but an embarrassing day on a big Thanksgiving stage against the Chicago Bears would shine a harsh light on the Lions’ struggles. People who quit worrying about the Lions weeks ago will notice that their second-year head coach is guiding a sinking ship.  The Lions get one day a year to be the center of the football world. Losing to Washington when you’re one of nine games on the early Sunday slate isn’t ideal. But a bad loss with the entire NFL world watching on Thanksgiving is going to be even worse.  Stafford’s injury hasn’t helped Detroit, clearly. Yet there haven’t been any other signs of progress, including a defense that has been miserable most of the season. On the surface, the first Thanksgiving game is between two teams whose seasons are already lost. But it might be a pretty important game for Patricia and Quinn.):   https://sports.yahoo.com/the-nfl-hot-seat-giants-might-need-to-shut-down-saquon-barkley-soon-160435050.html

Week 12 NFL takeaways: Playoff hopes dim for Raiders, Eagles (The Lions are in precarious territory, losers of seven of their last eight games -- and Sunday's defeat might be the worst. Players were at a loss after the game, and when veteran safety Tavon Wilson was asked what it says about Detroit that they lost to Washington, he said, "They were better than us today, so that gives you my thoughts on us." Wilson said the Lions have "to keep pushing" and play well in spurts. But spurts haven't been good enough this season for this team. -- Michael Rothstein):   https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/nfl_32for32112419/week-12-nfl-takeaways-playoff-hopes-dim-raiders-eagles

The Matt Patricia era is another disastrous chapter for the Detroit Lions:  https://sports.yahoo.com/matt-patricia-era-another-lions-disaster-020127977.html

What we learned from Sunday's Week 12 games (Washington Redskins 19, Detroit Lions 16:  1. As the Lions and Redskins gathered together at FedEx Field with empty seats scattered about in the background and a combined seven straight losses, it was Washington that came away with what was likely the best outcome the franchise could have hoped to gain. Rookie first-round quarterback Dwayne Haskins, excitement beaming, drove the Redskins down the field and Dustin Hopkins finished his perfect day with a 39-yard game-winning field that sent Washington to a 19-16 triumph over Detroit. Haskins (13-of-29 for 156 yards, no touchdowns, an interception and 47.5 rating) hardly looked good, but he notched his first win as an NFL starter. Rookie wideout Terry McLaurin (five catches for 72 yards), long seen as the brightest note in this forgettable season, had his best game since Week 6. Undrafted rookie returner Steven Sims Jr. had a 91-yard kickoff for a score. Rookie linebacker Cole Holcomb had a game-high 13 tackles. There was a little bit of promise to be had when all was said and done and that's been the rarest of currencies for the Redskins (2-9). Haskins, who came away with an injured wrist but said he was fine, began the game with a fumble on the first drive and ended it nowhere to be found as Case Keenum took the final knee. Interim coach Bill Callahan told the media after the game that they simply couldn't find the jubilant Haskins. "We were looking for him, too," Callahan grinned. "I think he thought the game was over." There was reason to smile for the Redskins for just a second time in a ridiculously trying campaign. And, with all the question marks that lay ahead for the franchise, it would be folly to say clarity was had in just one game during a lost season. But on this Sunday, at least a little bit of the sun appeared through the dark clouds.  2. There was much ado about whether cornerback Josh Norman would play on Sunday or be a healthy scratch. Norman ended up being active, but it was cornerback Fabian Moreau who provided the secondary presence needed. As Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel ventured to the island of Moreau, the Redskins DB came away with two interceptions, including the game-clinching pick on the Lions' last gasp of a drive. The third-year cornerback turned in a stellar day and his first two interceptions of the season as Washington busted loose from a four-game skid.  3. Bo Scarbrough turned in 98 yards on 18 carries. Playing in just his second game, Scarbrough has shown some promise. That's about it when it comes to Lions (3-7-1) highlights, as they lost for the fourth consecutive game and for the seventh time over eight games after a 2-0-1 start that teased promise and has come to this. Driskel ran for his life and was sacked six times and threw three interceptions but talk will venture to whether Matthew Stafford should be shut down for the season. The Lions were a dark horse to contend for the playoffs and after the first month seemed like they could surprise some people. There are no surprises left to be had in this season for Detroit, it would seem. At least not any pleasant ones. -- Grant Gordon):   http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001080197/article/what-we-learned-from-sundays-week-12-games

Week 12 Takeaways: Wentz in Crisis (What We’ll Be Talking About This Week - Put Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn Firmly on the Hot Seat: They can squeeze into one seat together. It’s not necessarily because of Sunday’s humiliating loss in Washington, which featured failures in every phase of the game (against a competent team that might be a 30-point loss). Firing folks over a single loss, no matter how bad, is silly. Rather, it's because they’re squandering the second half of Matthew Stafford’s MVP-caliber prime, Patricia continues to get the least out of his defense, and so many of Quinn’s head-scratching roster moves have made them objectively worse.):   https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/11/24/nfl-week-12-takeaways-breakdown-analysis

Insider Notes: Wentz underwhelms again (Keep an eye on Detroit if the Lions have another poor outing on Thanksgiving against the rival Bears. They are trending in the wrong direction in myriad ways, ownership's frustration is growing and on Sunday they found a way to lose to a broken Skins team that had not won at home in over a year. A loss Thursday would drop them to 3-8-1, with a long break before their next game. Remember, this was a playoff team not that long ago under Jim Caldwell …):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-insider-notes-carson-wentz-underwhelms-again-too-many-qbs-arent-big-game-ready-and-more/

CBS Grades (Lions: B-.  If the Lions learned one thing from this loss, it's that they're probably not going to win very many games with Jeff Driskel at quarterback. With Matthew Stafford injured, the Lions once again turned to Driskel, who threw three picks in this game, including two that came in the final minute of the game, and no, that's not a typo, Driskel literally threw two interceptions over the final 60 seconds, which was especially painful considering this game was tied with one minute left. One of the few bright spots for Detroit was Bo Scarbrough, who averaged 5.4 yards per carry (18 carries for 98 yards), but even he wasn't perfect as he lost a first-half fumble that led to a Redskins field goal.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-grades-raiders-get-an-f-for-disastrous-loss-browns-get-a-in-blowout-win/
