Dating back to last season, the Lions' defense has now allowed 24 points in nine consecutive games, which is the second-longest such streak in franchise history.  Will the offense continue to put up big numbers? The offense topped the league in points through the first four weeks, but it put up just six in the next two games. Against Miami, running back D'Andre Swift and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown returned to the lineup to help put up 27 points in the first half, but the offense stalled out after the break. NFL Winners and Losers: Raiders can't be feeling good about their Josh McDaniels hire (LOSERS - Dan Campbell: It keeps getting worse for the 2022 Detroit Lions, and at some point Campbell's job security is going to come into question. The Lions twice had a 14-point lead against the Miami Dolphins, and didn't even hold that lead into the fourth quarter. The Dolphins, who are 5-0 in games in which Tua Tagovailoa starts and finishes, came back to beat the Lions 31-27. The Lions had a shot to take the lead late, but a fourth-and-1 pass was incomplete and that was it.  The Lions seem to be the type of team that folds quickly when there's any adversity. It has happened a few times this season. Campbell's rah-rah persona should help prevent that, but it hasn't. The Lions keep losing, and a season that had some promise before it started has been a nightmare. The Lions went 3-13-1 last season. What We Learned from Sunday's Week 8 NFL games (Dolphins win 31-27: Michael Baca's takeaways:  1.  Dolphins' trust in Tua shows. Completing 29 of 36 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns, Tua Tagovailoa was the straw that stirred the drink for a Miami offense that gained 476 total yards. Throwing the ball on this day was necessary for the Dolphins after they fell to an early deficit that was maintained until the third quarter, but Tagovailoa's wildly efficient day was best encapsulated on his final two throws of the game to seal the win. With a four-point lead and two minutes to play, Mike McDaniel drew up pass play on first down and Tagovailoa came through with a perfect throw to Tyreek Hill to secure a much-needed first down. Two plays later after the Lions spent the rest of their timeouts, Tagovailoa found Hill again on third-and-8 to secure a game-clinching first down and fittingly end the game in victory formation. Tagovailoa's accuracy on those throws punctuated what had been a phenomenal day spinning the football whether it be in short or deep passing situations. Hill and Jaylen Waddle combined for 20 receptions for 294 yards and two touchdowns. The Tagovailoa-led offense reflected its quarterback's efficient outing as a whole by converting 8 of 12 third downs, and was perfect on fourth down (1 of 1), red-zone possessions (3 of 3) and goal-to-go downs (2 of 2).  2.  Lions spoil a great first half. Right out of the gate Detroit put to bed its recent scoring struggles with touchdown drives on its first three possessions, and came up with points every time it had the ball in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 27-17 lead. The Lions' first two quarters of play were near perfect, with Dan Campbell's squad energized in all three phases and seemingly ready, willing and able to engage Miami in a shootout. But the second half couldn't have been more different for the Lions, with the offense barely seeing the field (three second-half possessions for 67 total yards) and the defense ultimately succumbing to Miami's dynamic passing attack without any help whatsoever. Their second-half demise was simply due to an identity crisis on offense; unable to run the ball and unable to convert endless third-and-longs with a passing game that fizzled down the stretch. While it was a good sign to see Jared Goff get back to his early season form (321 passing yards; zero interceptions) upon the returns of Amon-Ra St. Brown and D'Andre Swift, all the good Detroit built in the first half was just as quickly forgotten in the final 30 minutes, and it all amounted to another frustrating postgame presser from Campbell.  3.  Dolphins' defense shows it's well-coached. After giving up 27 first-half points, the Dolphins defense made the necessary adjustments to blank the Lions in the second half and stave off a shootout. The effort was a clear indication of Josh Boyer and his defensive staff coaching up their players in the face of adversity. The Dolphins found their footing by first stopping a Lions rushing attack that was limited to 20 rushing yards in the second half, and it led to Detroit unraveling into a panicky mess that couldn't convert on third down. Zach Sieler came through with the team's only sack of the day in a big third-down situation in the fourth quarter, and Jevon Holland continued his Pro Bowl-worthy play through clutch pass breakups and sure-handed tackling. Their disciplined play in the second half could've been erased during the Lions' final possession, but the Dolphins stood true on Goff's final heave into the end zone on fourth-and-1. Although there are things needing fixing for Miami's defense going forward, it wasn't going to allow the blame fall on it in this one.  Next Gen stat of the day: Tua Tagovailoa was 15 of 18 for 290 yards and three TDs on passes of 10-plus air yards (tied most such completions in a game this season, Joe Burrow in Week 7 vs ATL).  NFL Research: Tyreek Hill has four games with 160-plus receiving yards this season. All other NFL WRs have four such games combined. CBS Grades (Lions Grade - C+.  This game looked like it was going to turn into a blowout win for the Lions after they took an early 14-0 lead, but for the third straight week, this team forgot how to play football in the second half. After scoring 27 points in the first half, the Lions got shut out in the second half, which continues an ugly trend for the Lions: They've now been outscored 48-0 in the second half over the past three weeks. Losing close gams to good teams was good enough for last year's Lions, but it's not good enough for this year's group. 2023 Mock Draft Round Up #3

PFN Mellor (1.  Detroit Lions: C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State:  The Detroit Lions need a resurgence of youth at the quarterback position, and if the season ended today, they’d have their pick of the litter. That pick is C.J. Stroud in this mock draft, as Stroud has the mental makeup and arm talent as well as every intangible you’d desire from a franchise signal-caller.  Put your fears of “just another Ohio State quarterback” away, as Stroud squashes all his predecessors with his NFL readiness. He’s an anticipatory thrower with ample arm strength and some of the best on-platform throwing ability we’ve seen in some time. He’ll pick up the Lions’ playbook quickly and improve the roster in a heartbeat..  20. Detroit Lions (from LAR): BJ Ojulari, EDGE, LSU:  Bending the proverbial edge or stacking his tackles with strength, there is a bevy of ways that BJ Ojulari wins. He’ll rush past tackles or power straight through them to get to the quarterback, and the Lions get a stalwart pass rusher in the middle stages of Round 1, thanks to the Rams.  32. Detroit Lions: Henry To’oTo’o, LB, Alabama:  The Lions improve their defense yet again with Henry To’oTo’o, who can move up and down the field in all facets. PFN Broback (1. Detroit Lions: C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State:  Ohio State struggled against Iowa this weekend, especially in the first half. Yet, they still managed to beat the Hawkeyes by 44. C.J. Stroud threw a pick-six, but Iowa couldn’t contain him for long. That resiliency and ability to display short-term memory would be perfect for Dan Campbell and the Lions.  Stroud brings all the tools to the Lions’ offense. Pair him with the explosiveness of Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown, and you’ve got an offense that puts fans in the seats. It’s going to take more than a pick-six to get Stroud out of the top spot for me, and Detroit won’t take long to select him first overall.   20.   Detroit Lions (via LAR): Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon:
With Detroit snagging their quarterback earlier in the draft, Dan Campbell gets a chance to add a dude in Noah Sewell. There won’t be much that the Oregon LB needs to hear from his new head coach to make plays at the next level. He’s wired differently than most players.  His ability to get downhill quickly paired with underrated athleticism, Sewell shouldn’t be on anyone’s draft board too long. Linebacker may not be the most coveted position in the draft, but Sewell will fly off the board once the middle of the first round starts.) Walter football Charlie (1. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama:  The Lions could choose to move on from Jared Goff after this season without any salary-cap pain. They also could keep Goff for 2023 while developing a future starter behind him. Goff is a competent pro starter, but not a championship-caliber quarterback, and Detroit needs an upgrade over him.  In 2022, Young has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,202 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has picked up 154 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well. Young (5-11, 194) took over as Alabama's starting quarterback in 2021, and there was a lot of hype about him in the scouting community. Some sources with college teams say they think he could end up being a better college quarterback than Tua Tagovailoa or Mac Jones. Some NFL sources believe Young's skill set and style of play are similar to those of Kyler Murray. In 2021, Young completed 67 percent of his passes for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven interceptions.  20.  DE Will McDonald:  The Lions could use an edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson. Charles Harris flashes at times, but would be better as a rotational third end. Adding an elite rusher to go with Hutchinson would vastly improve Detroit's pass defense.  McDonald has 18 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a pass batted thus far this season. He totaled 36 tackles, 11.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and three passes batted in 2021. McDonald recorded 10.5 sacks and 33 tackles in 2020 after recording six sacks in 2019.  Team sources rave about McDonald's pass-rush ability, and his natural skills at getting after the quarterback. He is fast and athletic, allowing him to shoot past blockers and put steady heat on the signal-caller. NFL teams, however, say McDonald (6-4, 245) is terrible versus the run and even bad opponents can destroy him in the ground game. Hence, he might be more of a designated pass rusher as a pro.  32. CB Devon Witherspoon:  The Lions need a corner upgrade to go with Jeff Okudah.  So far in 2022, Witherspoon has 21 tackles, an interception and 11 passes defended. The 5-foot-11, 183-pounder impressed preseason evaluators thanks to having serious speed to go along with adequate size. Advance scouts noted his cover ability, saying he is fast and athletic to run the route to prevent separation. However, team sources don't like the lack of ball skills and ball production.  Witherspoon had zero interceptions in 2021 after recording two in 2020 and zero in 2019. He also recorded 52 tackles and nine passes defended in 2021. He notched 33 tackles in each of the prior two seasons and two passes broken up over that time. CBS Edwards (2.  QB Will Levis:  Detroit would be faced with a choice between Alabama's Bryce Young and Levis. Personnel advisor John Dorsey has no problem with taking an undersized quarterback because he did that with Baker Mayfield. Young is a more slender player. General manager Brad Holmes was on board when Los Angeles selected Jared Goff No. 1 overall so he may favor a bigger, strong-armed quarterback in the NFC North.  22.  RB Jahmyr Gibbs:  Swift will be entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2023. He has missed ten total games, including three this year, over two-plus years. Gibbs is explosive hitting holes and a threat to catch passes out of the backfield.) Draft wire (1. Detroit Lions | Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud:  The Lions have bigger problems on defense, and it’s not like Jared Goff hasn’t played well enough for them to be successful on offense. That said, Goff may have already hit his ceiling, and if Detroit ends up with this pick, they’d have a hard time passing up the lofty potential of Stroud.  20. Detroit Lions (from LAR) | Texas A&M S Antonio Johnson:  This secondary needs more playmakers, and in this scenario, the best value comes on the back end. Johnson is a rangy, athletic defender who can line up single-high, in the slot, or mix it up in the box against the run, doing everything at an extremely high level.  32. FTW D'Andrea (1.  QB Bryce Young, Alabama (Team needs: QB, CB, S, LB, DT):  The Lions’ recent losing streak has a very Lions silver (and Honolulu Blue) lining. It’s pushed them to the top of the early 2023 Draft order. That leaves Detroit in perfect position to draft its next franchise quarterback.  Will it be Young or Ohio State star CJ Stroud? Young is a Heisman Trophy winner who may be the best quarterback in Alabama program history. Young’s abilities as a playmaker give him the edge for now, but it’s nearly a coin flip between these two future stars.  20.  LB Trenton Simpson, Clemson:  Detroit’s current off-ball linebackers are Alex Anzalone and 2022 sixth-round pick Malcolm Rodriguez, both of whom are better off as depth options rather than starters. Simpson, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound dump truck in the middle of the field, has a little bit more size and speed than Alabama’s Henry To’oTo’o, which gives him the nod here for Dan Campbell’s defense — though either would be a proper addition.  Simpson hasn’t been a factor in the backfield like he was in 2021 (12.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks) but he’s a tailback-mashing presence who can pump up the league’s 29th-ranked rushing defense in a division loaded with running threats. CBS Dajani (Miami Dolphins (-3.5) at Detroit Lions:  The Dolphins didn't cover against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, which is something I correctly predicted, but now Tua Tagovailoa has worked out the kinks and he's ready to get going again. Additionally, he and head coach Mike McDaniel get to have some fun against what is statistically the worst defense in the NFL. The offense ain't doing too well either, as the Lions have scored just six combined points over the last two games. They also turned the ball over five times last week vs. the Dallas Cowboys.   Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have combined for 1,394 receiving yards this season, which is the most by any duo through Week 7 IN NFL HISTORY. I think this week provides an interesting opportunity for McDaniel to open some things up offensively -- both on the ground and through the air. To be honest with you I hate 3.5-point lines, but you also have to hate where this Lions team is right now. The Dolphins are 4-0 when Tagovailoa plays the entire game, so I'll just hope Miami wins by at least four.   The pick: Dolphins -3.5

Now they’re 18th after the last three games, and they’re dead last since Week 5.
