NFL Week 16 takeaways: Bills clinch AFC East; Vikes pull off another last-second win (Lions - What to know: The Lions' run defense was atrocious. Detroit entered as one of the hottest teams in the league, winning six of their past seven games, but couldn't adjust to the Carolina rushing attack -- allowing the Panthers to set a franchise record of 240 rushing yards in the first half and 320 overall. Carolina also set a franchise record for most total yards with 570. One silver lining was Shane Zylstra's three receiving touchdowns, including one late in the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit to 34-20.  How important is a strong finish to the season? The Lions laid an egg against the Panthers. There's no denying that. But on a positive note, they've accomplished more than many thought they would this year, and there is still a 13% chance to reach the postseason, according to ESPN Analytics. But even if it doesn't make the playoffs, Detroit needs to be better than it was Saturday over the last two games to build some positive momentum into the offseason. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35304641/nfl-week-16-takeaways-2022-big-questions-every-game

2022 NFL season, Week 16: What We Learned from Saturday's games (Panthers win 27-23:  1.  Panthers' dominant rushing attack keeps improbable season alive. Carolina gashed the Lions defense for 320 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, outright controlling a fast-paced game in frigid temperatures and setting the franchise's all-time mark for rushing yards in the process. Chuba Hubbard set the tone for such a day with a 30-yard scamper on the game's opening play, prompting an eye-opening showcase of big run plays initiated by the tremendous blocking from the Panthers' offensive line. D'Onta Foreman got into the mix as well with a couple of big gains and would soon eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark along with Hubbard to help propel the Panthers into halftime with a commanding 24-7 lead. While Detroit was better prepared to stop the run in the second half, Carolina kept churning away on the ground to eat up clock with a lead and allowed its passing game to open up. Needing a first down to maintain possession late in the fourth quarter, Foreman ran up the middle for a 28-yard gain to surpass the team's previous record of 299 total rushing yards in a game. Foreman (165 yards; TD) and Hubbard (125 yards) set career-high marks in the effort, and with the Panthers notching wins in three of their past four games, interim coach Steve Wilks has his team eyeing an implausible playoff berth amid a tumultuous season.  2.  Lions couldn't climb out of early hole. Detroit set the table for a shootout in Charlotte once answering the Panthers' opening scoring drive with a touchdown, but the Lions' lone turnover on the day ruined such a scenario. Jared Goff's lost fumble on the snap not only ended a long Lions drive that reached the red zone, but concluded the quarterback's impressive streak of zero turnovers over the past six games (five wins). Allowing a TD on the ensuing Panthers drive, Detroit never really recovered and put itself in a precarious spot as its leaky run defense affected the rhythm of its streaky offense. The Lions went three-and-out on their two remaining drives of the first half and offered the same result for their two possessions coming out of halftime. Goff eventually got the offense going late in the third quarter, totaling 355 passing yards and finding three TDs to Shane Zylstra, but this was far from an impressive game his final stat line may suggest. The Lions' 45 total rushing yards on the day were another glaring factor of Detroit's disappointing day, and Dan Campbell's squad will go forward needing help from other teams in order to have a chance of getting into the playoffs.  3.  Sam Darnold making his case in Carolina. Benefiting from a rushing attack that couldn't be stopped, the Panthers quarterback exploited the Lions defense through the air in the second half to ensure a stress-free win. It was a demonstration of what could be in Carolina when the offense is firing on all cylinders. Darnold's 47-yard connection to D.J. Moore on the Panthers' opening second-half possession exemplified the type of splash plays that could be had in Carolina with a capable quarterback. The play set up Darnold's back-breaking TD throw to Moore to extend its first-half dominance, and while the Panthers QB managed his way toward an easy win, he was able to make all the throws asked of him. The 25-year-old completed 15 of 22 passes for 250 yards and a TD while adding 19 rushing yards and another score in the first half. Darnold found Moore five times for 83 yards and continues to prove a healthy rapport with Carolina's top receiving threat. It's performances like these that make one wonder if Darnold -- the Panthers' third starting QB of the season -- has been the man all along for Carolina in 2022. With two road games remaining against NFC South foes (at Buccaneers, at Saints), Darnold certainly has an opportunity to not only make that case but become Carolina's saving grace.  Next Gen stat of the game: The Carolina Panthers' +130 rushing yards over expected in the first half are the most by any team since RYOE was introduced in 2018.  NFL Research: The Panthers offense set new franchise records in total yards (570) and rushing yards (320) vs. the Lions behind 165 rushing yards from D'Onta Foreman and 125 rush yards from Chuba Hubbard, which is the first time in team history that two players each had at least 125 rushing yards in the same game.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2022-nfl-season-week-16-what-we-learned-from-saturday-s-games

Lions' blowout loss squashes their playoff momentum, but is also a needed reality check for promising franchise:  https://sports.yahoo.com/lions-blowout-loss-squashes-their-playoff-momentum-but-is-also-a-needed-reality-check-for-promising-franchise-220255502.html

NFL Winners and Losers: Kirk Cousins might deserve some credit after another game-winning drive (Losers - Detroit Lions' playoff chances: The problem with starting 1-6 is nothing can go wrong the rest of the season.  The Lions were playing very well, having won six of seven. And one awful afternoon probably unraveled everything.  The Lions got blasted by the Carolina Panthers 37-23 on Saturday. The Panthers set a franchise record for yards in a first half, and this isn't a good Carolina offense. Panthers running backs D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard each had 100 yards rushing before halftime. That's not good for Detroit. It was shocking given how the Lions have played lately.  The Lions aren't dead in the playoff race at 7-8 but it doesn't look great after Saturday. They really couldn't afford a loss at Carolina. And it wasn't even close.):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-winners-and-losers-kirk-cousins-might-deserve-some-credit-after-another-game-winning-drive-212838050.html

CBS (Lions Grade - D:  Everyone on the Lions defense is probably going to be getting a lump of coal in their stocking after their performance in this game. The Lions got absolutely run over by a Panthers rushing attack that totaled 320 yards, which marks the most the Lions have given up in a game since 1998. With the defense struggling, the Lions needed a big game from Jared Goff and the offense to stay in this, but the offense sputtered for the better part of three quarters before getting a few garbage-time scores. The Lions (7-8) were one of the hottest teams in the NFL heading into Week 16, but they seemed to fold under the pressure of actually being in a playoff race.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-16-grades-bengals-earn-b-for-wild-win-over-patriots-lions-get-d-for-disheartening-loss/

Ranking the top five rookie classes of the 2022 NFL season: Jets, Seahawks shine bright (3.  Detroit Lions:  Credit coach Dan Campbell and GM Brad Holmes for adding a group of rookies who fit the Lions' brand. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (Round 1, No. 2 overall), linebacker James Houston (Round 6, No. 217), defensive back Kerby Joseph (Round 3, No. 97) and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (Round 6, No. 188) have brought grit, toughness and playmaking ability to a defense that has started to improve down the stretch. Although that unit is far from perfect, the group has been playing winning football since defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn ushered in a youth movement on his side of the ball.  On offense, Jameson Williams (Round 1, No. 12) could spark the unit as a late-season addition. The Alabama product is slowly working his way back from a torn ACL, but his speed, burst and big-play ability will add a new dimension to the unit. (He has just one career catch so far, but it was a memorable one.) James Mitchell (Round 5, No. 177) has become a more significant contributor since T.J. Hockenson's departure. As a TE2/TE3, the big-bodied pass catcher has revealed himself to be a dependable chain mover in the Lions' heavy formations.   After evaluating the play of the Lions' rookie class, it is not a surprise that Detroit's recent run of success (6-1 over the past seven games) has coincided with a strong showing by this crop.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/ranking-the-top-five-rookie-classes-of-the-2022-nfl-season-jets-seahawks-shine-b

Week 16 Predictions

SN Iyer (Lions (-2.5, 44.5 o/u) at Panthers:  Jared Goff did just enough against a tough defense on the road for the Lions to win last week. They keep improving a little defensively by containing the run and not let team pass at will against them. The Panthers have become too dependent on the run and were exposed by the Steelers in that capacity at home. Detroit has real playoff momentum, while Carolina is limping to the end.  Pick: Lions win 20-17 and cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-against-spread-week-16/dqgdqhfw2fceteypq7f8dmmz

SN Bender (Detroit Lions (-3) at Carolina Panthers:  The Lions have emerged as this season’s Cinderella story after winning five of their last six games. The victory against the Jets last week was one Detroit would have coughed up in the past. Carolina is 4-3 at home and still in the NFC South race despite a 5-9 record. Detroit is 5-0 when it allows less than 100 yards rushing, and that’s happened the last three weeks.   Pick: Lions 27, Panthers 17):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-16/xsrvolub98niagsggcafymau

PFN Yates - Lions vs. Panthers Prediction, Odds, and Picks for Week 16 (Lions vs. Panthers Score Prediction - Lions 24, Panthers 20):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/lions-vs-panthers-prediction-odds-and-picks-for-week-16/

CBS Prisco (Detroit Lions (-2.5) at Carolina Panthers:  This is an important game for both teams in terms of playoff implications. The Lions are playing consecutive road games, which will be a challenge. Carolina looked bad last week in losing to the Steelers. The Lions are a tough challenge for the Carolina defense, which will be the difference in the game. The Lions keep rolling.   Pick: Lions 27, Panthers 17):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/priscos-week-16-nfl-picks-vikings-edge-giants-chiefs-crush-seahawks-49ers-roll-over-commanders/

CBS Sullivan (Lions at Panthers:  Detroit was able to keep its playoff hopes alive with a late win over the Jets -- the Lions' sixth victory in seven games. What has been particularly impressive about this streak for Detroit is the play from the defense. Dan Campbell's team is allowing just 19.9 points per game over the past seven games and owns a +9 turnover differential. That has helped the Lions go 7-0 ATS coming into Saturday. Meanwhile, the Panthers have also made some late-season noise as they push for an NFC South title, but have struggled to cover at Bank of America Stadium. In their last 14 home games, Carolina is 4-10 ATS.   Projected score: Lions 24, Panthers 21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-16-odds-picks-joe-burrow-continues-bengals-ats-run-vs-patriots-eagles-cover-without-jalen-hurts/

AP Maaddi (Detroit (minus 2 1/2) at Carolina:  Jared Goff and the Lions (7-7) are streaking after a 1-6 start. The Panthers (5-9) still can catch the Buccaneers, but must figure out a way to stop Detroit’s high-flying offense.  LIONS, 23-16):  https://pro32.ap.org/article/jaguars-jets-kick-week-16-still-playoff-chase

Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 16 matchup (Victoria Hernandez: Lions 28, Panthers 20.  The Lions have everything to play for and would be on a seven-game win streak except for a last-minute field goal by the Bills. Detroit is playing hungry while the Panthers have struggled to find their identity. The Panthers might have a bit of success with their running game as they've done a decent job splitting carries between backs and the Lions are allowing the eighth-most yards in the league.  Jaylon Thompson: Lions 23, Panthers 17.  The Lions are among the NFL's hottest teams in recent weeks. The playoff talk is REAL and should reach a new level on Saturday. The Panthers defense is very formidable, but the Lions are locked in. Expect a back-and-forth matchup with the Lions hanging on for a late victory.):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2022/12/21/detroit-lions-carolina-panthers-game-predictions-picks-odds/10927448002/

CBS Dajani (Detroit Lions (-2.5) at Carolina Panthers:  It appeared the Panthers had found new life with Sam Darnold under center, but I think we saw last week that if the run game isn't going, Carolina will have a tough time getting into the win column. The Panthers averaged 1.3 yards per attempt, and finished the 24-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers with just 21 rushing yards. As for the Lions, they have won six out of their last seven games, and have a chance at a playoff spot. They are also a good team to bet on, as Dan Campbell is 10-4 ATS on the year (tied for second-best in the NFL).  The Lions' win over the Jets last week was not too impressive, but it did stand out that Jets leading rusher Zonovan Knight managed just 1.8 yards per carry after a couple good weeks of running the ball. Give me the Lions.   Projected score: Lions 24-20):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-16-picks-best-bets-dolphins-ruin-christmas-for-aaron-rodgers-tom-brady-blasts-cardinals/

O'HARA'S WEEK 16 PREVIEW: Goff knows how to navigate a playoff race (Lions-Panthers pick: Lions favored by 2.5.  Head coach Dan Campbell has found a way to keep his team focused on the goal for seven straight weeks – two three-game winning streaks and a three-point loss to the Buffalo Bills. PFT’s NFL Week 16 2022 Picks (Lions (-2.5) at Panthers - MDS’s take: The Lions are making their way up the standings after a 1-6 start, and they’re going to win at Carolina and establish themselves as a real threat in the NFC playoffs.  MDS’s pick: Lions 20, Panthers 14.  Florio’s take: In a battle of big cats, the Lions roar their way above .500.  Florio’s pick: Lions 23, Panthers 20.):  https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/12/22/pfts-nfl-week-16-2022-picks/

NFL Real GM (Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers (+3): I really like the matchup of Jared Goff and a diverse, deep group of pass catchers against a Panthers defense that does well when it has a focal point but struggles to herd a lot of cats. Big lead (PANTHERS (+2.5) over LIONS:  Do you think we like doing this? Do you think we like setting the one good thing in our lives on fire? We don't. Jared Goff cannot keep winning road games, can he? Eventually Dan Campbell's pixie dust will wear off, right? Why wouldn't it all happen in the most painful possible way at the hands of Sam Darnold? Walder picks the seven biggest Pro Bowl snubs (Jared Goff, QB, Lions - Who he should replace: Kirk Cousins, QB, Vikings:  There's no super obvious candidate for the third NFC quarterback spot, but Goff's numbers are clearly better than Cousins'. Goff is more than 10 points clear in QBR (62.5 to 51.6) and is leading the offense that ranks third in EPA per dropback this season. Third! And he did all that despite not having as strong a receiving group to throw to as Cousins.):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35294350/pro-bowl-snubs-surprises-debating-afc-nfc-rosters-2023-nfl-game

Ranking all five 7-7 teams heading into Week 16: Lions, Jets pushing to make playoffs (1.  Detroit Lions (No. 9 in NFC · 2nd in NFC North, REMAINING GAMES: at Panthers; vs. Bears; at Packers.):  Well, well, well. What have we here? A Lions team that's (gasp) actually fun to watch? Detroit has washed off the stench of a 1-6 start that had some questioning Dan Campbell's future. During their current 6-1 streak, the Lions have boasted an entertaining offense behind coordinator Ben Johnson. The defense has improved, if only slightly, thanks largely to its performance against the run and surging improvement from rookies. With help from a good offensive line, a go-to star in receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and diverse play-calling, Jared Goff is playing the most efficient football of his career -- even better than in his 2018 Pro Bowl season, if not as explosive. The team that general manager Brad Holmes put together, and which Campbell lit a fire under, has overperformed in Year 2. Can the Lions keep the pedal to the metal?  After Sunday's big road win in New York, the schedule sets up nicely for Detroit to make a postseason run, presenting three teams all under .500. Get a little assistance along the way, and the Lions would become just the second team in NFL history to start 1-6 and make the postseason (joining the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals). Of course, all this bubbling optimism is sure to make lifelong Lions fans queasy, anticipating the rug getting pulled out in Week 18 in Green Bay -- probably by backup Packers quarterback Jordan Love, because that's how these things usually go.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/ranking-all-five-7-7-teams-heading-into-week-16-lions-jets-pushing-to-make-playo

2023 Pro Bowl Games snubs: Justin Fields, Tua Tagovailoa among players left out (Penei Sewell:  We can’t lie: Sewell going in motion and then catching an out route to convert a third-and-7 with just over two minutes to go in a tight game against Minnesota did tug at our heartstrings. But his place on this list is far more about what Sewell is doing as a blocker than as a receiver. We might have chosen the Vikings’ Christian Darrisaw, who also has been excellent, but his three-week stint on the sideline due to injury tilted us back to Sewell.  The Lions have a fun, talented young nucleus, and Sewell is a big part of that. He’s been flagged eight times, which is on the high side, and eventually he’ll need to grow out of the false starts. But when Sewell is locked in, especially when the Lions are running the ball in have-to-have-it situations, the former seventh overall pick has looked outstanding.  Amon-Ra St. Brown:  Despite a slow start compounded by multiple injuries, which caused him to miss one game and parts of two others, St. Brown very quietly ranks among the league leaders in receptions (89; sixth), receiving yards (974; 10th) and yards per touch (11.0; seventh). He's surpassed his rookie receiving and rushing totals in about the same number of chances so far this season, becoming more adept at breaking tackles and gaining yards after the catch.  St. Brown has been an absolute monster in the second half of the season, proving he's healthy again. Since Week 9, St. Brown has hauled in a whopping 630 of his 974 receiving yards, while boasting the highest catch percentage (78.3%) among receivers with at least 50 targets, per Next Gen Stats. It's not a coincidence that the Lions have gone 6-1 during that stretch, hurtling back into the playoff picture.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-pro-bowl-games-snubs

Here are five NFL teams that could shake up playoff mix if they reach postseason (Detroit Lions:  It feels like Dan Campbell’s coaching is paying off for a Lions franchise that has made the playoffs three times since 2000, the latest in 2016.  The Lions (7-7) have won six of their last seven games, including over the New York Giants and Jets in New York and the playoff-bound Vikings. They nearly pulled off an upset of Buffalo last month, losing 28-25. They are No. 9 in the NFC.  Wins over the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears in the next two weeks could put Detroit in position, but could face a test in Green Bay against the Packers in the season finale.  Standout Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown said of the team's confidence and momentum, according to ESPN: “when you play with that, I think anything’s possible, and we know that as a team.”):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2022/12/21/nfl-playoff-picture-teams-to-fear-in-postseason/10932927002/
