NFL Stock Watch: Jalen Hurts makes MVP statement; Bill Belichick, Patriots hit new low (STOCK DOWN - Detroit Lions:  The Lions lost to the Packers on Thanksgiving after needing a late comeback against the Bears the previous week. Just a few weeks ago, there was discussion about them being a viable No. 1 seed in the NFC conference. While the Lions are still having an outstanding season, seven of their eight wins are against teams with a losing record. The one team they've beaten with a winning record was the Chiefs all the way back in Week 1 when Kansas City's wide receivers failed Patrick Mahomes. The Lions lost to the Seahawks at home and were blown out by the Ravens in the two other games against teams with a winning record. It feels fair to lump them with the Dolphins and Cowboys as above-average teams that I don't trust in the playoffs against better competition. They beat the bad teams and lose to the good ones.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/jalen-hurts-mvp-statement-bill-belichick-patriots-hit-new-low

FMIA Week 12: Jason Kelce’s ‘Any Given Sunday’ and Philly’s Rocky Balboa Season (10 Things I Think I Think - 8. I think the Lions are regressing, which is an odd thing to say about an 8-3 team. But they can’t get defensive stops the way they did early in the year. I thought after last week, with the three picks thrown by Jared Goff, that it was a fluke event. But it’s worrisome that the Lions have turned it over 11 times in the last five games after turning it over six times in the first six. They’ve given up 29.0 points per games over the last five games. The massive comeback against Chicago may have been a mirage. 9. I think when you give up 38, 14, 38, 26 and 29 points over five games, that’s not going to put you in league with Philadelphia and San Francisco. I found myself wondering on Thanksgiving whether GM Brad Holmes will regret not going hard after a pass-rusher to bookend with Aidan Hutchinson down the stretch, or maybe corner depth; it’s one thing to get strafed by Justin Herbert, but another to get torched by Jordan Love.):  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/fmia/news/nfl-jason-kelce-philadelphia-eagles-atlanta-falcons-peter-king-fmia-week-12

2024 Mock Draft Round Up #3

Walter football Charlie (30.  Detroit Lions: Johnny Dixon, CB, Penn State:  The Lions could use a third corner to go with Cam Sutton and Jerry Jacobs.  History is repeating itself in Happy Valley. A year ago, Joey Porter Jr. had an underwhelming season that caused him to slide from being a consensus first-rounder to a second-day pick in the draft. Across from Porter, Kalen King had a tremendous season to establish himself as a top corner prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft. However, King has really struggled this year, giving up a lot of plays, while his teammate Dixon (6-0, 191) has impressed NFL evaluators. Dixon is gritty, quick, instinctive, and can run the route to prevent separation. This season, he has 24 tackles, four sacks, an interception and three passes broken up. In 2022, he recorded 23 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and eight passes defended.  62. Detroit Lions: CB Max Melton.  Jerry Jacobs has been phenomenal and a brilliant undrafted free agent signing by the Lions. Cam Sutton has played well also, but Detroit could use a third corner to go with them.  So far this year, Melton has recorded 29 tackles, two interceptions and six passes broken up. He went under the radar in 2022 due to playing on a bad Rutgers team that failed to qualify for a bowl game. He totaled 33 tackles, two interceptions and nine passes broken up on the year. While Max Melton had not received a lot of media attention, he caught fire in the scouting community for the 2023 NFL Draft. Some evaluators said they thought Melton could have been one of the top cornerback prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft and had a shot at being the first one off the board. However, Melton went back to school.  Melton is listed at 6-foot, 190 pounds, but pro sources say he might be more like 5-foot-11, 188 pounds. They state Melton has excellent speed and is super fast at shutting down the deep part of the field. Receivers can’t outrun him, and he is a superb athlete who can run the routes to prevent separation. Melton is a tough competitor and has a lot of upside.) (11-10-23):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2024charlie.php

CBS Edwards (30. OT Graham Barton:  Both of Detroit's starting offensive guards are projected to hit free agency after the season. In the event that one or both do not return, the Lions continue sinking assets into a franchise strength. Head coach Dan Campbell is always going to prioritize setting the tone on the lines of scrimmage.) Draft wire Popejoy (30.  Detroit Lions - CB Josh Newton, TCU:  The Lions love physical defenders and Josh Newton is one of the most physical corners in the draft.  62.  Detroit Lions – G Christian Haynes, UConn) (11-23-23):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-draft-thanksgiving-caleb-williams-marvin-harrison/

PFN Broback (30. Detroit Lions: JT Tuimoloau, EDGE, Ohio State.  Aidan Hutchinson and JT Tuimoloau may not have liked each other in college due to their rivalry, but they’re teaming up to give the Lions a lethal tandem. Hutchinson needs someone opposite of him to wreak havoc, and Tuimoloau has proven that he can be that guy.) (11-23-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2024-nfl-mock-draft-chop-robinson-caleb-williams/

SI Easterling (30. Detroit Lions  DE Chris Braswell:  The Lions already have one of the NFL's most dominant edge defenders in Aidan Hutchinson, but they need another high-impact player on the other end of the defensive front. Braswell has flown up the draft board thanks to a highly productive season, and he's got all the physical tools to keep ascending at the next level.  62. Detroit Lions
WR Malachi Corley.   84. CB Detroit Lions (from MIN)
Jason Marshall Jr..  93. Detroit Lions

Yahoo Tice (30. Detroit Lions — Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo:  Even after investing into the defensive backs room last offseason in free agency and the draft (Brian Branch is a keeper), I have the Lions taking Mitchell. He’s a MACtion alum who hits all of the height, weight and speed thresholds that teams love from their cornerback prospects and should keep rising up draft boards as the process heats up.  Not only does he have the physical traits that are prioritized, he is also highly aware and plays with fantastic eyes on the quarterback and route concepts. Mitchell constantly makes plays on the ball and makes turnovers happen. His aggressive style would fit right in with this Lions team under head coach Dan Campbell, and Mitchell is going to get only more fans as this process wears on.) Walter football Walt (30. CB Marcellas Dial:  The Lions wanted Devon Witherspoon at No. 6, so perhaps they’ll obtain a cornerback with this pick. Marcellas Dial has a good blend of size, athleticism, and speed.  62. Detroit Lions: Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  The Lions have a great offensive line, save for right guard. That could be addressed with this pick.  Layden Robinson isn’t very athletic, but he’s a violent blocker who has impressed this season.) (11-22-23):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2024.php

Fox sports McIntyre (30. Detroit Lions: Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:  I'm not as high on him as others, and several Tide defensive backs haven't lived up to their draft billing for a variety of reasons. But the Lions must improve their dreadful secondary.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-nfl-mock-draft-caleb-williams-first-of-5-qbs-in-top-9-picks

PFN Schulte (30. Detroit Lions: J.T. Tuimoloau, EDGE, Ohio State:  The Detroit Lions have needed a pass rusher to emerge opposite Aidan Hutchinson, and it hasn’t happened. J.T. Tuimoloau boasts the explosiveness that Brad Holmes looks for and is powerful and an advanced pass rusher with his technique. He boasts the strength needed to stick in base against the run, something the Lions need more of.) (11-21-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2024-nfl-mock-draft-tuesday-week-12-2023/

PFN Miller (30. Detroit Lions: Andrew Mukuba, S, Clemson:  Andrew Mukuba will be an excellent modern safety. He is far from the prototypical size we think of for the position, but his foot speed and coverage chops make him a good option for immediate snaps in the slot at the next level. However, he has plenty of experience on the back end as well, making him a diverse coverage player in Aaron Glenn’s defense.  It’s also worth mentioning that C.J. Gardner-Johnson was on a one-year deal, and Tracy Walker’s contract expires after 2024.  62. Detroit Lions: Quinton Mitchell, CB, Toledo:  Cornerbacks who are 6’1″, 200 pounds, and run a 4.3×40 usually don’t last this long on the board. However, they’re usually not playing at Toledo, either.  Small-school players must test out of the water, and if Mitchell shows explosiveness, agility, and speed at the NFL Combine, it will quell any concerns about the level of competition he played against at Toledo.) (11-18-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2-round-nfl-mock-draft-week-12-2023/

Draft Tek (28.  DT Leonard Taylor III:  The Detroit Lions have made dramatic progress this year defensively, last week's 41-38 shootout win over the Chargers notwithstanding. But one area that does not feel improved is the team's pass rush. While the Lions' overall defense ranks a respectable ninth in the league, the team's pass rush win rate ranks just 28th, according to ESPN. A dominant edge to pair with Aiden Hutchinson would be one clear path toward that goal, but a highly athletic D-Tackle figures to be a better value in the late First Round.  Leonard Taylor III: 19% Pass Rush Win Rate this season  Miami's Leonard Taylor III is a cat-quick 305-pounder who has the lateral moves to frequent the opposing backfield. He could pair with Alim McNeal to create a disruptive inner front as Brad Holmes continues building the Lions roster from the inside out. Lions fans who rooted for DT help in the past two drafts would no doubt cheer the selection. --Jud Branam, Lions Analyst.  60.  C Jackson Powers-Johnson.  85. WR Ja'Lynn Polk.  92. DE Josaiah Stewart.  156. RB Devin Neal.  188. LB Jackson Mitchell.  220. CB Storm Duck) (11-16-23):  https://www.drafttek.com/2024-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Lions-Draft-Page.asp

CBS Wilson (30. S Tyler Nubin:  Nubin is a ball-hawking safety who can provide some pop when coming downhill in run support.) (11-14-23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-caleb-williams-should-go-no-1-no-guarantee-he-will-stacked-wr-class-as-8-go-in-round-1/

Draft wire Risdon (29. Detroit Lions: Bralen Trice, EDGE, Washington - Trice is instant pressure on the opposing QB. He needs some positional discipline but as a flamethrowing pass rusher, there might not be a better one in this draft class. Pairing Trice with Aidan Hutchinson would be a nightmare for opposing QBs against Detroit.  61. Lions: Josh Newton, CB, TCU) (11-10-23):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-mock-draft-2-round-projections-prior-to-nfl-week-10/

SN (29. Detroit Lions (6-2) Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa (6-1, 209 pounds):  The Lions could use some physicality at cornerback outside after shoring up the inside with Brian Branch in the draft. Cameron Sutton has worked out OK as a starter but they need an infusion of healthy youth. DeJean would add to the Iowa haul after the team took Sam LaPorta and Jack Campbell in 2023.) FTW D'Andrea (29.  Detroit Lions: CB Kamari Lassiter, Georgia - Needs: CB, WR, EDGE, LB.  The Lions’ secondary has improved significantly this season, dropping its passer rating allowed nearly 10 full points to 84.5 through nine weeks. But there’s no such thing as too much cornerback depth, and Dan Campbell loves guys who are happy to play angry.  That’s Lassiter, who can bully wideouts at the line of scrimmage and blasts through tackles with more strength than his 180 pound frame suggests. He’s got six passes defensed through nine games in 2023.) (11-8-23):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-mock-draft-2024-drake-maye-caleb-williams-marvin-harrison-jr

USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (29. Detroit Lions - Landon Jackson, DE, Arkansas:  A midseason reality check served up in the Ravens' dismantling of the Lions highlighted the urgency for Detroit to continue building out its defense. One of the top priorities should be finding a proper complementary edge rusher to put opposite Aidan Hutchinson. The 6-7, 281-pound Jackson would check off plenty of boxes for GM Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell, as he combines stout run-stuffing ability with a burgeoning pass-rush skill set after recording 3 ½ sacks against Alabama.) PFF Sikkema (29. DETROIT LIONS: CB KALEN KING, PENN STATE - Player ADP (via MDS): 22.8.  Player Big Board Rank: 30.  Cornerback still feels like the top need for the Lions. Though King struggled against Marvin Harrison Jr., he still put up an elite coverage grade in single coverage last season. NFL Week 12 risers, fallers and biggest questions: 49ers and Cowboys roll; Packers climb closer to playoff race (Lions:  Was the protection of Jared Goff a one-week blip or evidence of a bigger problem? Goff was pressured on 45% of his dropbacks in the first half, going 9-of-20, and was sacked three times throughout the game. Detroit's offensive line has been among the strengths of this roster, but struggled against the Packers while missing offensive lineman Jonah Jackson (wrist) for the second straight game. Veteran guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai was also placed on the injured reserve list on Nov. 14. It's certainly something to watch as the team looks to get more out of linemen Kayode Awosika and rookie Colby Sorsdal.  Stock up after the loss: Jameson Williams. The second-year receiver continues to grow more comfortable in the Lions' offense as the trust level increases among teammates. Williams, the No. 12 overall pick in 2022, made two catches for 51 yards, including a 38-yard reception in the fourth quarter.  Stock down after the loss: Goff. For the second straight game, the veteran quarterback struggled with turnovers. Against Green Bay, he lost three fumbles for the first time in his career after throwing three picks on Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Prior to Thursday, he went 12 straight games without a lost fumble. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38958605/nfl-week-12-2023-questions-risers-fallers-takeaways-lessons-stats

2023 NFL season, Week 12: What We Learned from Thanksgiving Day games (Packers at Lions - Kevin Patra's takeaways.   1. Jordan Love coming into his own. Plagued by slow starts this season, Love dialed up a 53-yard bomb to Christian Watson on the first snap, and the Packers were off and running. Green Bay entered Week 12 having scored 20 total first-quarter points, third-fewest in the NFL. They equaled that number on Thursday. Love was sensational, playing calmly in the pocket and slinging darts all day. The third-year QB put up his fourth straight good game, carving up the Lions defense for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Love had the answer every time, finding open receivers over the middle, hitting Watson for a perfect TD lob, and avoiding several sacks. Blessed with stellar pass protection, Love surveyed splendidly and rarely missed an open target. It’s been an up-and-down first starting campaign, but Love has begun to show the positive play and upside that Packers brass believed in entering the season. Slicing up a Lions D that pestered him in Week 4 will give Love and Green Bay confidence they can make a playoff push down the stretch.  2. Turnovers once again plague Jared Goff. There was no miracle comeback this time in Detroit. Coming off a three-interception game on Sunday, Goff once again couldn’t hang on to the ball, fumbling twice in the first quarter to allow the Packers to open up a big lead. The QB fumbled three times on the day and struggled to manage a muddled pocket. Goff missed a host of throws under pressure, completing 6 of 16 passes when pressured, per Next Gen Stats. When the veteran QB turns the ball over six times in four days, it’s tough to consistently win, particularly with a defense that struggles to get stops. Unlike Sunday against Chicago, Green Bay offered nary a sliver of light for a comeback bid. Down two scores, the Lions attempted an ill-fated fake punt at their own 23-yard-line in the third quarter, and failed twice on fourth down. For the day, Detroit went 0 for 5 on fourth downs. The Lions added a TD at the end, but it was too little, too late. For a young team still trying to win, the miscues came home to roost against a division rival on Thanksgiving.  3. Rashan Gary propels fierce Packers pass rush. With Green Bay missing key players in the secondary, the Packers front made up the difference. Gary was a menace all game, picking up three sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Seemingly every key Lions offensive play, Gary was in the backfield wreaking havoc. Joe Barry’s defense generated 26 pressures and won nearly every critical down. On the back end, safety Jonathan Owens played splendidly for a depleted unit, scoring on a first-quarter fumble, compiling a team-high 12 tackles, including several crushing ones, and a tackle for loss. The complementary play Thursday against a division rival pushed the Packers to 5-6 and into striking distance in a muddled NFC playoff picture.  Next Gen stat of the game: Kenny Clark generated a season-high seven QB pressures on 40 pass rushes (17.5% pressure rate) -- five pressures occurred in under 2.5 seconds (season high). Five of Clark’s seven pressures came across 20 matchups against Lions right guard Graham Glasgow (25.0%), with all five occurring in one-on-one matchups.  NFL Research: Jordan Love became the third Packers QB in the Super Bowl era with three-plus passing touchdowns and zero interceptions in a Thanksgiving game -- Aaron Rodgers (2009) and Brett Favre (1994, 2007).):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-season-week-12-what-we-learned-from-thanksgiving-day-tripleheader-packe

Winners and losers from Thanksgiving Day NFL games (LOSERS - Dan Campbell: His decision to go for a fake punt deep in Detroit’s own territory late in the third quarter proved to be rather costly. At the time, the Lions were down nine points and the failed attempt gave Green Bay the ball at the Detroit 23. Three plays later, the Packers scored another touchdown. The Lions ended up 1-for-5 on fourth down attempts.  Detroit pass protection: The Lions are known for having a very good offensive line, but Jared Goff was under constant pressure Thursday, and it wasn’t just Rashan Gary. The Lions allowed 12 quarterback hits, and Goff could never get comfortable in the timing and rhythm of Detroit’s offense. Goff lost three fumbles on the day.  David Montgomery: The Detroit running back was ready to show off a Thanksgiving celebration – maybe using his belt towel as a napkin? – when his third-quarter TD run was nullified by a holding penalty. Montgomery actually scored on the next play but got banged up in the process. No celebrating that.  Tradition?: This edition of the Lions may be the franchise’s best in decades, still comfortably atop the NFC North. And it finally felt like Detroit truly deserved its annual Thanksgiving platform. But it sure felt like the same old Lions by Thursday afternoon, their fans suffering a seventh consecutive Thanksgiving defeat.):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2023/11/23/nfl-thanksgiving-day-2023-winners-losers/71688521007/
