Jared Goff  - Last week: N/A.  While it's expected at this point, Goff's prolific numbers shouldn't be overlooked. Goff is tied for third in the league in touchdown passes, fifth in completion percentage and sixth in passing yards. He has yet to throw an interception.  Like Mahomes, an unexpected division title for the Lions would certainly boost Goff's MVP hopes. He was also an asset as a run blocker on an afternoon where Jahmyr Gibbs totaled 164 yards and three touchdowns.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/draft/onsi/news/10-nfl-rookies-who-turned-heads-and-totally-stole-the-spotlight-in-week-3

Week 4 Power Rankings

Athletic (6. Detroit Lions (2-1) - Last week: 8.  Sunday: Beat Jets 31-24.  QB confidence: Should be higher.  If former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn thought he was going to rattle Jared Goff, he was sorely mistaken. The New York Jets blitzed Goff 16 times Sunday, and the 31-year-old was 16-for-16 for 173 yards and two touchdowns on those plays. For the season, he has five touchdowns, no interceptions and a completion percentage of 86.7 when blitzed, according to TruMedia. Overall, he’s third in the league in touchdown passes (eight) and hasn’t thrown a pick.):  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7640490/2026/09/29/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-raiders-broncos-rams-patriots/

Walter Football (9.  Detroit Lions (2-1)Team Hub - Previously: 11. The Lions rebounded nicely from their blowout loss to Buffalo on Thursday night. Some might say it was only the Jets, but New York isn't nearly as bad as some people think. Detroit's victory was an impressive bounce-back performance against an underrated opponent.):  https://walterfootball.com/nflpowerrankings.php

Fox sports Cowherd (9. Detroit Lions
Record: 2-1 - Previous ranking: 10.  Cowherd’s thoughts: The Lions are weird. Worst scoring defense in the league, yet they're second in sacks to the Vikings. But this is about Jahmyr Gibbs. This is about Jared Goff. Only team to score 30 plus points in every game, but they're going to have to win by track meets. So I think their floor is incredibly high. I don't know if their ceiling is as high as I thought going into the season.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/herd-hierarchy-raiders-legit-seahawks-fall-while-bills-49ers-rise

USA Today (10. Detroit Lions (10): How consistent has this offense been? Exactly 31 points in every game. A low of 355 yards and a high of 381. And just one turnover. If a defense that's allowed the most points (95) in the league can hold on long enough to get some reinforcements, this team has a legit shot at finally ending the league's longest hex of failing to qualify for the Super Bowl.):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/nate-davis/2026/09/29/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-seahawks-bills-chiefs-49ers/91998593007/

TheBigLead (10. Detroit Lions: The good news is the Lions are 2-1 and have scored 93pts, 31pts in each game. The bad news is that they have given up 95pts. This week they are on the road, facing the Panthers, who are coming off a tough loss. The Panthers have scored 89pts, also averaging nearly 30pts per game. A Panthers victory will flip these two teams in the standings.):  https://www.thebiglead.com/nfl-power-rankings-entering-week-4-2026/

SN (11. Detroit Lions 2-1 (14):  The Lions need every bit of what Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs are doing to light it up offensively with their defense porous in every which way. Shootouts follow everywhere they go and they might need to make a drastic change soon.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-power-rankings-week-4/7341d122c9adf1408db36e5e

FTW (11. Detroit Lions:  Last week: 12.  The Lions are 2-1, but those two wins came over the Saints and Jets, needing a stop on a two-point conversion and a late strip sack, respectively, to escape. The offensive line is still coming together, the secondary is a mess, and a pass rush punching above its weight class has been unable to cover for it. Detroit is a flawed team. Will those flaws be fatal, or will they keep the fireworks show going for the next 20 weeks? — CD):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2026/09/29/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-49ers-raiders-broncos/91993129007/

PFN (12. Detroit Lions - Last Week’s Ranking: 13.  Offense Rank: 5.  Defense Rank: 32.  Playoff Odds: 72.80%.  As many concerns as the Detroit Lions might have on defense, we know by now that their offense is one of the best in the NFL. They put up 31 points in their win over the Jets on Sunday, which was headlined by Jahmyr Gibbs scoring three touchdowns. The 31-24 victory bumped Detroit up to 2-1 to start the year.  Sure, the Lions allowed an explosive performance by Geno Smith through the air, but their defense also sacked Smith five times. Throw in a clean game from Jared Goff, a dominant outing by Gibbs, and a two-sack game from DJ Wonnum, and the Lions have to be feeling pretty good coming out of Week 3.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/week-4-nfl-power-rankings-2026/

CBS (12. Lions:  Jahmyr Gibbs is carrying this team and is in the early MVP conversation. They have to be happy to be 2-1 with all the defensive injuries.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2026-nfl-power-rankings-week-4-bills-vikings/

ESPN (13. Detroit Lions (2-1).  Week 3 result: Beat the Jets 31-24.  Week 3 ranking: 14.  Fantasy surprise: QB Jared Goff.  It's sometimes easy to forget about Goff's consistency because he plays alongside elite playmakers such as RB Jahmyr Gibbs and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown. The veteran QB is a viable starter in fantasy this season, averaging 21.9 points. Goff was the No. 18 quarterback in our draft rankings and had an ADP of 131.4. After Sunday's win, Gibbs lauded Goff as Detroit's "leader." "We trust him with everything," Gibbs said. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50052289/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-teams-fantasy-surprises

Fox sports (13. Detroit Lions Record: 2-1.  Previous ranking: 14.  Super Bowl odds: +1900.  Next game: @ Panthers (Sunday, 8:15 p.m. ET).  There aren’t many more dynamic offenses in the NFL, and few teams can boast a dynamic duo like RB Jahmyr Gibbs and WR Amon-Ra St-Brown. This team is a juggernaut, averaging more than 31 points per game. But man, does their defense stink. And it shouldn’t, not with defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (3.5 sacks), yet it still does. You know who the Lions remind me of? Last year’s Cowboys. The offense is unstoppable, but it’s the trainwreck defense that’s keeping them out of the top 10.  Stat To Know: This is the first time in Lions franchise history that they have scored 30+ points in each of their first three games of a season.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2026-nfl-power-rankings-week-4

Yahoo (13. Detroit Lions (2-1, LW: 13) - The Lions have given up the most points and second-most yards in the NFL this season. They beat the Jets on Sunday but allowed 335 yards and 24 points. Two Jets, Garrett WIlson and Kenyon Sadiq, had 100-yard receiving games. Most Lions games this season will be high scoring. They'll need the defense to make a few plays, like it did in the final minute. The Jets reached the Lions' 28-yard line, but safety Chuck Clark sacked Geno Smith on a blitz, causing a fumble that the Lions recovered.  "And then for our defense to have to, man, they had to make that stop," Lions head coach Campbell said. "That's what it was going to come down to. And it was such a great call by [defensive coordinator] Kelvin Sheppard and those guys executing it."):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/article/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-the-raiders-are-3-0-and-there-are-plenty-of-signs-it-might-stick-033636438.html

NFL.com (14.  Detroit Lions:  We know the Lions can put up points in bunches by leaning heavily on Jahmyr Gibbs, and this offense is capable of keeping them in every game they play. Their defensive struggles in the fourth quarter remain concerning, even if a takeaway saved them from another trip to overtime.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-power-rankings-week-4-2026-nfl-season

SI (14. Detroit Lions (2–1) - Last week’s ranking: No. 18.  Last week’s result: beat Jets, 31–24.  This week: at Panthers.  Jared Goff is one of six quarterbacks in NFL history to start the season with more than 800 yards passing and eight touchdowns in three games. If the Lions can go out and get themselves Joey Porter, all will be right in the world, as the offense is holding up its end of the bargain.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/conor-orr-week-4-nfl-power-rankings-bills-take-over-top-spot

Fansided Jason LaCanfora (18. Detroit Lions - Last Rank: 18.  Week 3 Result: def. Jets, 31-24.  I’m not buying this operation. It’s starting to become clear this is a team that can beat lesser teams but struggles with the middle class and is probably in trouble vs. good teams. The defense is bad; they let teams go crazy on them in the second half of games and Penei Sewell at left tackle might not be the move. Their decline feels real to me.):  https://fansided.com/nfl/nfl-power-rankings-entering-week-4-packers-and-patriots-tumble-chiefs-overtake-seahawks

What to know from Sunday's Week 3 games: Big day for Jahmyr Gibbs, plus concern for Drake Maye (Lions - Have the Lions fixed their defensive issues after rough start to season? After giving up 71 points through the first two weeks, Detroit shook up its secondary with Rock Ya-Sin serving a reserve role, while CB Roger McCreary started at outside cornerback alongside veteran D.J. Reed. Entering the game, the Lions were outgained by 191 total yards, fifth worst in the NFL, but second-year defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard refused to do any finger-pointing. Instead, he held a Monday meeting to dissect the struggles. The unit responded with a key takeaway in crunch time, but the defense still has major work to do.  Key stat to know: Jahmyr Gibbs finished with three total TDs, but his two rushing touchdowns helped him surpass Billy Sims (42) for the second-most rushing TDs (43) in franchise history -- trailing only Barry Sanders (99). Sanders was in attendance as part of the Lions' alumni homecoming. Gibbs put on a show in front of the Hall of Famer, finishing with 20 carries for 99 rushing yards and seven catches for 65 receiving yards. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50043408/week-3-sunday-games-takeaways-questions-2026

NFL Week 3 Recap: New York Jets 24, Detroit Lions 31:  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-3-recap-new-york-jets-24-detroit-lions-31

2026 NFL season, Week 3: What We Learned from Sunday's games (Lions 31 Jets 24 - Kevin Patra's takeaways:  1. Gibbs, Lions offense powers win over Jets. Jahmyr Gibbs did his best Barry Sanders impression, carrying Detroit to a win with jukes galore. The stud running back scored three second-half touchdowns, starting with a 17-yard against-the-grain jaunt in which No. 0 pulled off a No. 20 imitation. Gibbs was a mismatch against the Jets' older linebackers in the passing attack, repeatedly finding space in the open field. He finished with 99 rushing yards and two scores on 20 carries, plus seven catches for 65 yards and the game-winning TD. Gibbs’ ability to gash defenses on the outside while also muscling for short-yardage games shows complete-back ability. His talent as a pass catcher makes him unstoppable. Powered by Gibbs, the Lions offense moved up and down the field for the final three quarters, scoring on five of six drives. They avoided a three-and-out all day while putting up 30-plus points for the third time in three weeks to open the season.  2.  Jets battle but come up short. Geno Smith and the offense needed time to kick things into gear. After going three-and-out in two of the first three drives, Smith diced up the Lions secondary. Displaying good pocket acumen and a willingness to sit in and take a hit, Smith threw for 321 yards on 31 of 37 with three TDs. The Jets took advantage of their tight end matchups. Rookie Kenyon Sadiq had the best game of his young career, proving to be a good outlet with good hands and the ability to dust LBs. He finished with 105 yards and his first career receiving TD on seven catches. Sacks stymied the Jets offense early, but the offensive line cleaned things up in the second half, allowing the Jets to tie the game late after falling behind 14 -0. Then the Lions threw a big blitz, and Chuck Clark got away clean and sacked Smith, who fumbled with a chance to score late. Once again, the Jets showed they can compete. The next step is turning close losses into actual wins.  3.  Lions D makes a late play after struggling to slow the Jets. Kelvin Sheppard dialed up a blitz that confused the Jets' blocking and allowed Clark to come up with the game-sealing strip. It’s a good thing Chuck Clark made the play, because Detroit’s defense once again showed an inability to get a stop in the second half. With defensive backs getting burned so often, the pass rush rarely gets a chance to get to the quarterback. When the defensive line is blocked up, it’s almost assuredly a big play for the opponent. Former Jet D.J. Reed continues to struggle, getting picked on and racking up defensive interference calls. Reed versus Garrett Wilson was a clear mismatch. When a team's most veteran CB is a liability, it’s going to be a problem. At this stage, the defense’s hope is to get just enough stops while the offense keeps racking up points. It’s a defense that requires a near-perfect offense to rack up Ws. Next Gen Stats Insight for Lions-Jets (via NFL Pro): The Jets blitzed Jared Goff on 44.4% of his dropbacks, with Goff completing all 14 of his attempts for 148 yards and a touchdown when facing extra rushers (+27.8% CPOE). Goff also fared well on play-action, completing 11 of 13 attempts for 181 yards.  NFL Research: With his two rushing touchdowns in Week 3, Jahmyr Gibbs (43) passed Billy Sims (42) for the second-most rushing touchdowns in Lions franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famer Barry Sanders (99). Gibbs also recorded his fifth career game with three touchdowns, tying HOF Jim Brown and Todd Gurley for the most three-plus TD games by a player before turning 25 in NFL history. His seven career games with 150-plus scrimmage yards and multiple scrimmage touchdowns trail only Hall of Famers Jim Brown (11), Barry Sanders (nine) and Walter Payton (eight) for most by a player under the age of 25 in NFL history.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2026-nfl-season-week-3-what-we-learned-from-sunday-s-games

NFL Winners and Losers: Mayeday territory for Pats (WINNERS - Jahmyr Gibbs: Gibbs is one of the best talents in the NFL, and on Sunday he had a touchdown run that would have made Marcus Allen proud. Or Barry Sanders.  Gibbs took a toss to the right, was immediately hemmed in, so he simply reversed field and outran the New York Jets defense for a 17-yard score. It's the type of run that not many backs in the history of the league could even attempt, much less make it look as pretty as Gibbs did.  When the Jets came back to tie the game 24-24, it was Gibbs who punched back. His 11-yard touchdown gave the Lions the lead back, and they went on to win, 31-24. Gibbs had 99 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and 65 yards receiving and another score on seven catches.  Gibbs has gone from sharing time with David Montgomery to having the Detroit Lions' backfield to himself, and we're seeing him become an even bigger star than he was.  Gibbs was fantastic again against the Jets. He signed a three-year, $67.5 million extension before this season began. It might be the biggest bargain in the NFL.):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/article/nfl-week-3-winners-and-losers-what-has-happened-to-drake-maye-and-the-patriots-my-concern-level-is-very-high-for-this-football-team-203240248.html

NFL Week 3 grades for all 32 teams: Commanders earn first 'A' (Lions:  B- .  If we've learned one thing about the Lions through three weeks, it's that they're only going to go as far as Jahmyr Gibbs can take them. Gibbs had another huge game with 164 total yards and three touchdowns, including two that came on the ground. Every time the Lions were in trouble, they made sure the ball ended up in Gibbs' hands, and he almost always responded. It's nice to have a weapon like that in the NFL. One bright spot on defense was a pass-rush that sacked Geno Smith five times, including a game-winning strip-sack by Chuck Clark in the final minute. The Lions defense did struggle for most of the second half, but Detroit ended up holding a team under 30 points for the first time this season, so that feels like a small victory for the guys on that side of the ball.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-3-grades-patriots-stumble-commanders-shine/

Dobbs can ingest a playbook with the best of them, and his mobility brings an extra dimension to any offense, which explains why the Lions acquired him from the Patriots when Teddy Bridgewater retired during the preseason. Week 3 Predictions

CBS Breech (Lions 31-24 over Jets):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-3-picks-score-predictions/

SN Bender (New York Jets at Detroit Lions (-6.5) - Sunday, 1 p.m., Fox.  The Lions' defense has allowed 31 points and three passing TDs in each of its first two games heading into a matchup against the Jets and former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. The Jets' defense has improved and allows 65.5 rushing yards per game – but Jahmyr Gibbs will cut through that. Detroit takes control in the second half.  Pick: Lions 33, Jets 16):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-3-saints-raiders-vikings/6884e7fdaa4ee34cea4b3928

SN Iyer (Jets at Lions (-6.5, 47.5 o/u) - Sunday 1 p.m. ET, Fox  Dan Campbell's offense has been cooking with some key adjustments and he will have the advantage this week playing against former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Glenn and Brian Duker have so far coached a dominant group vs. pass and run, but the Lions' attack with Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown is a different type of challenge. Coming off a mini-bye at Ford Field, Detroit flexes on an opponent that can't keep up with it.  Pick: Lions win 30-20 and cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-against-spread-week-3/059029be02bb72e99195dff5

CBS Sullivan (New York Jets at Detroit Lions - Sunday, 1 p.m. (Fox, Stream: Fubo, try for free).  I feel like Fredo Corleone by turning my back on the Jets like this. We backed them over the last two weeks (straight up in Week 1 and then ATS in Week 2), and they cashed both times. But like Paulie said in Goodfellas: "Now I gotta turn my back on you."   With this line sitting below a touchdown, we'll pounce on it in favor of Detroit. This is an offense that has put up at least 30 points in each of the last two games, and both contests turned into a track meet. While New York has been frisky this season (and I expect them to continue to be an ATS darling for the bulk of the year), I'm not sure Geno Smith and company keep up in this spot. Sure, this defense has allowed just 65.5 rushing yards per game over the first two weeks (second-lowest in the NFL), but that's come against backfields led by Tony Pollard and MarShawn Lloyd. Jahmyr Gibbs is a totally different animal, and I don't see that level of containment on the ground to continue.   The Lions' shaky defense admittedly gives me some pause. They are giving up 35.5 points per game and 457.5 total yards per game through the first two weeks, which rank 31st in the NFL. But as I said, if this turns into a shootout, I like Detroit's chances with the slew of weapons they have, especially given the added rest after playing on Thursday. They are also 11-1 straight up and 10-2 ATS in their last 12 home games following a loss.   Projected score: Lions 33, Jets 21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2026-nfl-week-3-picks-odds-predictions/

CBS Prisco (New York Jets at Detroit Lions (-6.5) - Sunday, 1 p.m. on Fox (Stream: Fubo -- try for free).  The Lions will have extra rest here as they welcome in their former defensive coordinator, Jets coach Aaron Glenn. The Jets are playing better on defense, but this is a big challenge against the Lions' offense. The Detroit defense hasn't been good, but they will play better here with the lead to win it. But it's close.  Pick: Lions 28, Jets 23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/priscos-week-3-nfl-picks-browns-upset-panthers-giants-rally-behind-jameis-winston/

NFL.com Video - Jets vs. Lions preview | Week 3 (All 10 pick the Lions to win by scores of 33-20, 34-21, 28-17, 31-27, 27-17, 30-26, 30-21, 27-22, 24-17, 29-17):  https://www.nfl.com/videos/jets-vs-lions-preview-week-3

Pro Picks: Broncos will beat the Rams in a possible Super Bowl preview (NEW YORK JETS (1-1) at DETROIT (1-1) - Line: Lions minus 6 1/2.  Aaron Glenn goes back to Detroit where he was defensive coordinator for four seasons. He could’ve been 2-0 if not for poor clock management. The turnover-prone Geno Smith has protected the ball in his return to the Jets. The Lions are struggling on defense without their starting safeties so they’ll need Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and their prolific offense to outscore opponents.  LIONS: 30-20):  https://apnews.com/article/pro-picks-nfl-lines-spreads-3433fb443cb6de80da467b1d7226b352

Football Meteorology For NFL Week 3 (New York Jets at Detroit Lions (-6.5): The Lions have scored 31 points in each of their first two games, a win vs. the Saints and a loss to Buffalo. The Jets defense hasn’t yet allowed 31 points on the season, giving up 10 to Tennessee in a win and 20 to Green Bay in an overtime loss that should have been a win. In the “something’s gotta give” department, I’m rolling with Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and the Lions at home to maintain their successful start. It helps that Detroit will get back rookie right tackle Blake Miller, who was sorely missed in Week 2. Lions 31, Jets 21):  https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3715/Football-Meteorology-For-NFL-Week-3

Lions prediction lab: The Jets want one kind of game Sunday, and Detroit has to make sure they never get it (The prediction - Lions win, 31-24. The Jets’ defense is susceptible to Gibbs, and they’re susceptible to the deep pass. The Packers and the Titans are just not the same caliber of offense the Lions are, and you can understand why those teams struggled against New York. This could be an awakening for the Jets’ defense in a bad way, the kind of game where you realize there’s a gap between shutting down average offenses and facing a truly elite one.):  https://atozsports.com/nfl/detroit-lions-news/lions-prediction-lab-the-jets-want-one-kind-of-game-sunday-and-detroit-has-to-make-sure-they-never-get-it/

CBS Dajani (New York Jets at Detroit Lions (-6.5) - Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, Stream: Fubo, try for free).  I've become a Jets merchant, cashing on them in both Week 1 and Week 2. Now I'm flipping on them, because how they lost last week to the Packers was embarrassing. Aaron Glenn was content to let Jordan Love have the final play of a tie game instead of taking a timeout and giving his offense a final chance. And I'm not so sure he remembered the rules for overtime, since he elected to take the ball first and promptly go three-and-out. C'mon, man.  It's true that the Lions' defense is once again going to stop them from contending for a Super Bowl, but Jared Goff should get back two of his starting offensive linemen this week, and the offense as a whole is still electric. Jahmyr Gibbs has racked up 299 total yards and three touchdowns this season, while Amon-Ra St. Brown became the first player to catch two touchdowns in a team's first two games of a season since Rob Gronkowski in 2021. Quite simply, the Lions are going to outscore the Jets. And I want to see Dan Campbell take some anger out on his former defensive coordinator after getting embarrassed on a national stage last Thursday night. The Lions are 11-1 SU and 10-2 ATS in their last 12 home games following a loss, so Campbell usually comes through.  The pick: Lions -6.5.  Projected score: Lions 28-16):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-3-picks-odds-best-bets-broncos-will-upset-rams/
