2020 East-West Shrine Game: Tuesday's East Team Practice Report (Driscoll wasn't the only Auburn Tiger to have a nice day on Wednesday as safety Jeremiah Dinson had a good session. In the team scrimmage, he turned to run down the seam and was able to break up a deep ball intended for a tight end. Dinson was flying around the field showing some range and the ability to cover ground in coverage. He looks like he could compete to be a backup safety and special teams contributor.) College Football: 2019 PFF All-SEC Team (First Team: Jeremiah Dinson, Auburn
Dinson owned the highest-grade (90.2) among all SEC safeties, and he did so on a defense that is full of brilliant playmakers. After three lackluster seasons, Dinson showed serious promise, specifically in coverage. His 91.9 coverage grade is a result of his superior lockdown ability, and he has the statistics to show for it. Across 359 coverage snaps, the Auburn safety was targeted just 31 times, allowing 22 receptions and just 99 total receiving yards — good enough for 4.5 yards per reception.) College Football Week 9: 2020 NFL Draft Scouting Notes (Stock Report - Up: S Jeremiah Dinson, Auburn: Dinson’s play on Saturday is Exhibit A in why sometimes coverage stats can be misleading. He allowed completions on all five of his targets against LSU for 27 total yards, but he didn’t allow a single first down. The Senior is in his third year as a starter for the Tigers and has slowly been making his way up the PFF board with his play this season. His 90.2 coverage grade is the highest in the country. He’s been an extremely sound tackler over the course of his career and has only two misses on 50 attempts this year.) 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl: Stock up on these offensive prospects (Mason Kinsey, WR, Berry College: If you didn’t know where Berry College was prior to this week, Mason Kinsey’s performance prompted a Google search. The Division III standout had a big week in St. Pete and was virtually uncoverable during 1-on-1 periods. Kinsey (5-foot-10, 191 pounds) is a savvy route runner that is tremendously smooth in and out of breaks, and he does a great job using his leverage to his advantage. Though he was rarely asked to run many vertical routes throughout the week, mostly settling for short and intermediate patterns, Kinsey had a knack for keeping defensive backs guessing. He set them up by making every route look the same. I spoke to Kinsey after practice on Tuesday. Here are some quotes on the following subjects. The challenges he faced this week as a small-school prospect: “I just have to stay technically sound. These guys are a lot more disciplined in their technique than what I’m used to, so, I gotta do the same thing. Then, it’s just a battle of who wants it more.” What makes him such a proficient route runner: “I just feel like I’m disciplined. I try my best to get in and out of breaks with as few steps as possible. I work on it a lot. I still got a lot of work to do.” Areas of opportunity: “Probably stems. Just figuring out how I want to attack guys’ leverages and things like that. I feel like I’m pretty efficient in and out of breaks, but when it comes to getting in certain places on the guys, I can be a little more disciplined and creative that way. 2020 NFL Scouting Combine Snubs - QB/RB/WR/TE (Giovanni Ricci - 6'3/240 - Western Michigan: As we are targeting potential fantasy production as opposed to blocking acumen, Giovanni Ricci is well worth keeping tabs on thanks to his All-MAC worthy play this year. Originally a wide receiver recruit out of Loveland, Ohio Ricci was not highly recruited in high school before choosing to play at WMU. He spent the first couple of years bulking up from 210 pounds up to 240 pounds in order to play the flex tight end position. He specialized in crossing routes and slants while not being tasked with too many over the shoulder throws. Ricci has a wide receiver's smooth gait when running across the field and does well separating from pursuing linebackers to get free. His 75.3 receiving grade from PFF is very respectable, even surpassing Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet's receiving grade of 73.4, and is best suited as a pass-catcher as opposed to a blocker. Ricci was very productive for Western Michigan's 33.7 PPG offense, catching 51 passes for 642 yards and eight touchdowns. He is crafty while making the kinds of hard cuts you are accustomed to seeing from wide receivers. He is projected to run in the 4.7's at WMU's upcoming 3/19 pro day. Criticisms stem from his lack of prototype tight end size and the seven drops he had this past season in 91 targets are a concern at the next level where tight ends need hands like glue to make contested catches. Ricci also doesn't make defenders miss very often, recording only 5 avoided tackles all season. His size means NFL scouts will want to see him run in the 4.65 range if at all possible, which is right around what Purdue tight end Brycen Hopkins ran at the combine. 2020 NFL Draft: Tight ends with the most to prove in bowl season (WMU Giovanni Ricci vs. Western Kentucky, First Responder Bowl: A Western Michigan tight end squaring off against Western Kentucky doesn’t seem like a top-tier matchup, but this is a matchup I have a feeling scouts will keep an eye on. Ricci was a Mackey Award semi-finalist who is on his way to the Shrine Game. He isn’t a huge target at 6’3 and 240 pounds, but he’s one of the most dynamic athletes in this tight end class. Western Kentucky ranks 33rd in passing yards allowed, and Ricci will be key for the Broncos if they want to win this game. A big performance here and a great offseason could shoot Ricci into the top four rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.) College Football: 2019 PFF All-MAC Team (First Team: Giovanni Ricci, Western Michigan: Ricci’s selection as first-team All-MAC tight end gives Western Michigan a first-team representative at each of running back, wide receiver and tight end. Ricci earned his spot with a career-best 77.3 receiving grade, serving as a big-time red-zone threat, where his seven receiving touchdowns led all FBS tight ends this season. He showed the versatility to line up both in-line and in the slot, but Ricci did his best receiving work when lined up tight. He generated a passer rating of 131.5 on those 39 targets this season.) Back to the Future: Texas A&M WR could challenge Alabama CB (Sleeper to Watch: Western Michigan TE Giovanni Ricci - It’s a weak tight end class for this year’s NFL Draft, to put it bluntly. However, Giovanni Ricci has been a bright spot in the MAC to the point where he now leads the NCAA in receiving yards and touchdowns for the position. Ricci is a converted wide receiver with an excellent ability to stretch the field. Something we’ve not seen much of this season from college tight ends. This play is just a great adjustment outside of his frame to a less than ideal ball. Ricci demonstrates that he can make seamless catches without using his body. He has the ball skills to reach behind his head and outside his frame, which could move him up NFL team’s draft boards. As a former wide receiver, Ricci is incredibly athletic and has some agility in his game to make things happen after the catch. He’s also solidly built, which aids him in breaking arm tackles. From there, he demonstrates an added element of run after the catch. Ricci is a continuous watch each week. If he keeps it up, not only could he sneak himself into being drafted, but Ricci could garner legitimate buzz in NFL Draft circles.) NFL draft winners and losers: Jacob Eason, other quarterbacks with new teams shine (winners - Western Michigan TE Giovanni Ricci had a nice season debut with five catches for 97 yards and two TDs in 48-13 win over Monmouth University. He’s an interesting, late-developing prospect who was a high school QB and shifted from receiver earlier in his Broncos career, reshaping his body along the way. At 6-3 and 240 pounds, he’s more of a split-out option at tight end, but Ricci might be one to keep an eye on as the coaching staff believes he’s developing into a matchup problem for opponents. He had only three TDs last season (two coming in a blowout of FCS Delaware State) and faces a far tougher chore this coming week against what looks like a terrific Michigan State defense. But if Ricci can improve his production against the Spartans, who held him to two catches for 5 yards last season, it could help keep scouts on his trail.)
