Ranking the situations for the NFL's 2020 rookie running backs 6. D’ANDRE SWIFT, DETROIT LIONS: Swift should have no issue taking the bulk of the touches away from 2018 second-rounder Kerryon Johnson, as injuries have zapped his effectiveness. Johnson has suffered knee injuries that forced him to miss extensive time in each of the past two seasons and has recurring shoulder problems, as well. He went from a 77.9 rushing grade in 2018 and 5.4 yards per carry to a 68.2 rushing grade last season and 3.6 yards per carry. The question with Swift will be how good his run blocking is. On the flip side, nobody has ever had to convince Matthew Stafford to throw deep when the opportunity presents itself, and even in an injury-shortened season saw him attempt eight more deep passes than Carr did all season long. Projecting all 32 NFL starting lineups ahead of the 2020 season (Battle to watch: Da’Shawn Hand vs. Nick Williams at defensive tackle - Danny Shelton should be the clear-cut starter at nose tackle heading into next season for Detroit, but the next two in line for snaps on the defensive interior should be Hand and Williams. Both guys figure to see plenty of playing time in a rotational capacity, but I like Hand to carve out the larger role in 2019. He got off to a tremendous start to his career as a rookie in 2018, earning an 85.9 overall grade and contributing as both a run defender and a pass rusher. Hand saw his role shrink in 2019 down to just over 100 snaps, but if he can put up a similar performance to what we saw from him as a rookie, the Lions' defensive line will be in good shape. Name to watch: Jahlani Tavai. Hopefully for the Lions' sake, the move to Detroit and former coach Matt Patricia’s defense goes smoother for Jamie Collins than his last departure from New England. If so, he’ll add a dynamic blitzing/coverage threat that the Lions’ linebacking corps needed. Jarrad Davis should begin the season seeing more snaps than Tavai, but he has shown little thus far to feel confident in his progression as an NFL starter, with grades of 52.8, 51.0 and 40.4 in his first three seasons. Tavai, meanwhile, put up an overall grade of 60.5 as a rookie last season on nearly 600 snaps — not perfect but a decent start to his career. Most underappreciated player on every NFL team (When defensive fronts and backfields work together well, the result is fewer points allowed, fewer first downs allowed, more sacks and interceptions and a whole lot more pressures (even if they don't turn into sacks). The Lions' defense tied for the second fewest sacks (28), ranked third-worst in terms of pressures generated (per my computer vision) and allowed 26.4 points per game (26th). This is my way of saying that the defense was not a source of strength, and the front didn't help the back, or vice versa. Detroit Lions RB D'Andre Swift (second round / 35th overall): Since Barry Sanders retired in 1999, this team has enjoyed four 1,000-yard rushing seasons from three players, none since 2013. Analyzing 10 dark horse NFL MVP candidates in 2020 (QB Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions: When talking of the top quarterbacks in the game, Mathew Stafford is always an afterthought. A higher upside than Kirk Cousins, but lower than Rodgers, the former first overall pick is somehow in the middle of all pocket passers looking to become the next big name. The Lions are in for a rude awakening this season in a do or die season for Matt Patrica. The one positive for the roster will be if their franchise quarterback can come back and be healthy for a full 16-game season. Before missing games due to back and hip injuries, he was on pace for 4,998 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Lions star also was building chemistry with first-rounder T.J. Hockenson and shifty slot target Danny Amendola. Detroit has quality weapons in Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones as the top options. A healthy Kerryon Johnson and D’Andre Swift should balance the offense and give Stafford more weapons. If the 32-year-old quarterback can stay on his feet, expect monster numbers in the Motor City. Keep in mind the last time Stafford missed eight games, he bounced back and took home Comeback Player of the Year honors. Comparing the 2021 running back class to this year’s top prospects (D’Andre Swift (5’8″, 212 pounds): D’Andre Swift has been on the radar of the draft community for quite some time and for good reason. He is an explosive game-changer, who has elite footwork and impressive balance. In 2019, he had 196 carries for 1,218 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Believe it or not, these stats indicate a down year for Swift. It’s about time the Lions gave Matthew Stafford an electric play-maker in the backfield. It won’t be long before Swift assumes the starting running back role over Kerryon Johnson, and once he does, watch out. For my money, Swift was the best running back in the 2020 draft. When I watch film on him, I am reminded of former Baltimore Ravens standout Ray Rice. When it comes to the 2020 season, Swift should be the most productive rookie running back in the league.)
