2026 NFL season sim: Predictions, surprises, playoff teams (Lions win Super Bowl LXI - In August, Detroit coach Dan Campbell said, "Our window is not closed." How right he was. The Chargers-Lions Super Bowl was expected to be close, with the Lions favored by only 1.5 points. It lived up to the billing. After two Jahmyr Gibbs touchdowns put Detroit up 14-0, it looked as if the Lions might run away with the title. But the Chargers came storming back on their home field, with Justin Herbert hitting Ladd McConkey for a touchdown to end the first quarter before finding Keaton Mitchell on a wheel route for a long TD pass to tie the game 14-14 at halftime. Back and forth the game swung, with Cameron Dicker hitting a 55-yard field goal to put Los Angeles up 31-30 with 90 seconds left. But that was too much time for Goff. After a chunk passing play to Jameson Williams, the Lions found themselves in field goal range with plenty of time remaining. They handed the ball to Gibbs several times to inch closer and burn Los Angeles' timeouts. Jake Bates connected on a 42-yard field goal as time expired to win the title. Goff, Gibbs, St. Brown and Campbell really did it. The Lions are Super Bowl champions.): https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/49795320/2026-nfl-season-simulation-fpi-predictions-playoffs-super-bowl-champion
NFL Award Predictions: Will Matthew Stafford Or Patrick Mahomes Win MVP? (Offensive Player Of The Year - 1. Jahmyr Gibbs Detroit Lions: One of the most complete backs in the league, the speedy Gibbs should benefit from the diverse running game scheme new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing brings with him from Arizona. Gibbs finished with 1,223 rushing yards last season, but could push for 2,000 yards in Petzing’s scheme. Since being selected No. 12 in the 2023 draft, Gibbs is third in the NFL in scrimmage yards at 5,029. On an offense filled with dynamic playmakers led by an elite distributor of the football in Jared Goff, Gibbs is the most important chess piece.): https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2026-27-nfl-awards-predictions-will-matthew-stafford-patrick-mahomes-win-mvp
Is Drake Maye Ready For Super Bowl Rematch? Why The 49ers Aren't Ready For The Rams (4. Detroit Lions: He Said What?! "Nobody Makes A More Accurate Throw Under Duress Than Jared Goff." I recently waxed poetic about how special Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown are as a QB-WR tandem. That’s because they are special. And I thoroughly enjoy their game. Well, sorry, here comes the I-love-you-but. Coach Dan Campbell recently said that Goff is beyond comparison when it comes to facing pressure. "His processing speed reminds me of [Drew] Brees," Campbell told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. "Nobody makes a more accurate throw under duress than Jared Goff." Unfortunately, the stats don’t lie. Goff is actually the league's most sensitive quarterback to pressure over the past three seasons. His expected points per dropback ranges between .43 in a clean pocket (best in the league) to -.42 when pressured (28th), per Fantasy Points Data. That’s an .85-point swing.): https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/drake-maye-ready-super-bowl-rematch-49ers-arent-ready-rams
Albert Breer’s Takeaways: Where Every NFL Team Stands Heading Into the 2026 Season (Detroit Lions: I think you can make a case that the Lions have the NFL’s most talented core, which was highlighted to me with the new deal they did for running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The explosive young back joined Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, Jack Campbell and Kerby Joseph among young talent drafted, developed and now re-signed to big-money deals by the Lions. Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta could be next. And I’m on record as saying I believe Jared Goff has become way better than people give him credit for. A favorable schedule is waiting too, and I honestly believe the Lions can vie with the Rams and Seahawks for the NFC’s ticket to Inglewood.): https://www.si.com/nfl/albert-breer-takeaways-every-team-heading-2026-season
10 Streaks On the Line During the 2026 NFL Season (Jared Goff’s consecutive games with a touchdown pass streak - Jared Goff currently holds the longest active streak for the most consecutive games with a touchdown pass. He’s thrown a touchdown in 23 consecutive games, dating back to Week 13 of the 2024 season, or the Lions’ Thanksgiving matchup that year. Goff is a long way off from Drew Brees’s record of 54 consecutive games with a touchdown pass, but he can still keep his streak alive this season and move up the all-time list. Given the Lions boast the NFL’s easiest schedule and one of the best offenses, Goff should have a good shot at keeping the streak going for a while longer.): https://www.si.com/nfl/ten-streaks-on-line-during-season
One Thing We Learned About Every Team During the Preseason (Detroit Lions: The Lions have found their new backup quarterback. After Teddy Bridgewater suddenly retired, the Lions signed Josh Dobbs, who solidified himself as the team’s backup quarterback behind Jared Goff. In the final preseason game against the Colts—a contest that saw Indianapolis play some of its starters—Dobbs completed 15-of-19 passes for 128 yards, two touchdowns, and no picks in his best preseason performance. Goff has been durable for the Lions and has not missed a game since the 2021 season, his first in Detroit, but the Lions have found a good backup.): https://www.si.com/nfl/one-thing-learned-every-team-preseason

1 question for all 16 NFC teams entering 2026-2027 NFL season (Detroit Lions: Can the Lions stay healthy? The Lions have a great roster with Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Aidan Hutchinson as their main core. The team’s expectations should be high as their schedule gets a little easier, and it should be a great division race this season. The team had some injuries last year that hurt them.): https://www.thebiglead.com/1-question-16-nfc-teams-entering-2026-2027-nfl-season/
Ranking the NFL's 15 best tight ends for the 2026 season, from Brock Bowers to A.J. Barner (5. Sam LaPorta, Lions (age: 25): LaPorta (6-3, 245 pounds) gets to operate in the offense of new Detroit coordinator Drew Petzing, who called the plays that led to McBride's massive production over the past two seasons in Arizona. When healthy, he's a well-rounded tight end with good hands and the potential to dominate shorter routes.): https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-tight-end-rankings-2026/3569d4ea10334138fbaae0b1
Ranking the NFL's 25 best wide receivers for the 2026 season, from Ja'Marr Chase to Zay Flowers (4. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Lions (age: 26): St. Brown has been the league's preeminent pure slot receiver for a while. He also runs great routes and is so tough and quick inside at a JSN-like 6-0, 202 pounds. "The Sun God" packs the ideal combination of toughness and quickness. 19. Jameson Williams, Lions (age: 25): Williams makes it a third duo on this list. He's positioned to have a big season making big plays outside, even to the point of become a true Pickens to St. Brown's Lamb. He too is working toward become more complete.): https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/ranking-nfl-best-wide-receivers-2026/dde0879c237d377d4665e107

Predictions:
Final Lions 2026 game-by-game predictions: Detroit has a clear path back to the top of the NFC North, even if the season ends in a weird way (The final verdict: 12-5, NFC North champions - The Lions finish 12-5 and head to the playoffs as NFC North champions. Not the 1 seed, but a very good football team that could potentially win the Super Bowl this year. I really like this schedule for Detroit. You get two effective byes with the early bye week and about 12 days off after Thanksgiving. The path is there. Week 1 starts on Sunday.): https://atozsports.com/nfl/detroit-lions-news/final-lions-2026-game-by-game-predictions-detroit-has-a-clear-path-back-to-the-top-of-the-nfc-north-even-if-the-season-ends-in-a-weird-way/
Predicting final record for all 32 NFL teams; Falcons name starting QB (NFC North - 1. *Lions: 12-5. NFC North bold prediction: Jared Goff wins MVP - At first, I wasn't sure if this prediction qualified as bold, but it definitely does, because Goff isn't even among the top 10 favorites to win MVP this year. His odds of winning MVP are currently +2500, which is the 13th-best overall. So why do I like Goff? Glad you asked. The criteria for winning MVP has basically become two-fold: You have to be a quarterback and you have to play for one of the best teams in the NFL. Well, Goff is a quarterback, and I think the Lions are going to be one of the best teams in the NFL this year, which I think will put him in the MVP conversation. I actually picked Goff to win the MVP in 2024, and although the prediction didn't pan out, he led the Lions to an NFL-best 15-2 record and finished fifth in the MVP vote. I felt good about that prediction back then, and I feel even better about this one. One other thing I like about Goff is that the Lions have a friendly schedule this year. They get to play 12 of their 17 games in a dome and they'll likely only have to deal with two cold-weather games all season, and fittingly, those two games -- Week 17 at Green Bay and Week 18 at Chicago -- will likely go a long way in determining whether Goff wins the MVP. And if you're wondering why I like the Lions to win the division. A lot of it comes down to their three non-common games. Every team in the NFC North plays 14 similar games and three non-common ones: DET: at Cardinals, Giants, Titans. CHI: at Seahawks, Eagles, Jaguars. GB: at Rams, Cowboys, Texans. MIN: at 49ers, Commanders, Colts. I feel like the Lions will go 3-0 with their slate, but I can't see any other NFC North team pulling that off with their trio of games.): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/breechs-final-record-prediction-for-all-32-nfl-teams-plus-falcons-finally-name-starting-qb-for-week-1/
