Boom or bust? Re-assessing big WR contracts (1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions - The deal: Signed an eight-year, $130 million contract in March 2012, with $53 million guaranteed. Stats since signing: 43 games in three seasons, 277 catches, 4,533 receiving yards, 25 receiving touchdowns. Johnson is getting paid a boatload of money, but even so, I think one could argue the Lions are getting a heckuva bargain. He'll turn 30 this season, and he's missed five games over the past two seasons with various injuries, but he's still so smooth. I don't think he's lost any speed, which he uses in combination with his size (6-foot-5, 236 pounds) to devastating effect. He's also a super individual, someone who never loafs on routes where he's not the primary. Simply put, he's a tough, tough out. Yes, Detroit has invested quite a bit more in Johnson than you would in most receivers -- but then, he's produced at a level that far eclipses the average pass catcher. In the three seasons since he signed the deal, Johnson has racked up more receiving yards than anyone else in the NFL (4,533) and set the current single-season record with 1,964 in 2012. He demands the attention of the defense, opening things up for teammates like Golden Tate, and has a sizable impact on games. I also don't see any decline in his ability whatsoever. Of course, the Lions will have a decision to make next offseason, given that Johnson is currently set to count for $24 million against the cap in 2016. 10 NFC players with make-or-break seasons ahead (7. Matthew Stafford, Lions quarterback - Stafford is a little different than the rest of this list. He's entrenched as a starting quarterback, and will be paid a ton of money for the next five years. It's not like the Lions are going to consider moving on from him. The inclusion here is more personal. After his down season in 2014, I'm starting to wonder if Stafford ever improves. Or is this just what he is? Some of that stems from the offseason departure of all-star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency to Miami and the belief that it will send the Lions spiraling downward. The addition of newcomer Haloti Ngata from Baltimore may help ease the Suh loss, but there are other questions surrounding the defensive line following the exodus of fellow veterans Nick Fairley and George Johnson. The Lions ranked 28th last season in rushing and made improving that a focal point of their draft. They took running back Ameer Abdullah in the second round and guard Laken Tomlinson in the second. With Tomlinson and Larry Warford at the guards, the Lions have a powerful duo to key the run game. The Lions also traded to get center Manny Ramirez from Denver. NFC offseason grades: With Jimmy Graham, Seahawks still seem class of conference (Lions get a D-. Lions: Shame on them — and we're talking unwise cap management over the years — for creating scenario that allowed game-wrecking DT Ndamukong Suh to escape for nothing. Losing fellow DT Nick Fairley was clearly an organizational decision, but void remains that even an established player like Haloti Ngata can hardly be expected to fill. Simply the worst: Each NFC team's worst player ever (Charles Rogers - WR, Detroit Lions: You knew Detroit's entry into this competition would be a member of a Matt Millen draft class, and few did less with more than Rogers, who Millen took with the No. 2 pick in the 2003 draft. And what did the Lions get for the man they took with Andre Johnson still on the board? (Note: The Texans selected Johnson with the No. 3 pick). They got a star from Michigan State who was completely unprepared for the realities of the NFL. Rogers did catch 22 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season before a broken clavicle ended his 2003 campaign, and then suffered the same injury early in the '04 season. Rogers was so distraught over the recurrence that he asked to rehab at home. Millen allowed this, which he later admitted was a mistake. Rogers had a history of failed drug tests while in college, and this caught up to him in 2005, when he was suspended four games for multiple violations of the NFL's drug policy. This put Rogers in default of the contract he signed, and the Lions asked Rogers to pay back $10 million of the $14.2 in bonuses he received. In 2008 (the same day owner William Clay Ford finally fired Millen), an arbitrator ruled that Rogers had to repay the team about $8.5 million, and he was in no condition to do so, after he couldn't find work with another NFL team. He found himself in repeated trouble with the law, and has struggled with drugs and alcohol. A sad story all around.
