Walter Football Charlie's Mock (20. DT Taven Bryan: The Lions could use more interior defensive line talent, and Bryan would give them a three-technique to pair with A'Shawn Robinson. Sources told me that Lions general manager Dan Quinn was at the Florida pro day to watch Bryan, and taking Bryan would fit with Quinn's other early-round picks. Bryan (6-5, 291) broke out in 2017 with 40 tackles with six tackles for a loss and four sacks. In speaking with some scouting sources, Bryan has drawn comparisons to the Chiefs' Chris Jones or the Broncos' Derek Wolfe. Some announcers have compared the 6-foot-4, 295-pound Bryan to J.J. Watt, and in terms of style of play, Bryan is reminiscent of Watt, although not consistently. Bryan has a tremendous get-off with serious explosion off the snap. He also has developed strength with active hands to shed blocks. Given his length, Bryan can play end or tackle, plus is an ideal candidate for five-technique. I heard from sources weeks early that Bryan was going to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft, and scouting contacts project him to the first or second round. Bryan is a great athlete who is big, strong, fast and agile. He had a late start in football, however, from growing up in Wyoming, and that showed up in him never demonstrating good instincts. Bryan is inconsistent while lacking feel and pass-rushing moves. Considering his late start in football, he would have likely been better off in his long-term football career to return to school and gain playing experience before going to the NFL and taking on pro offensive linemen. Some team sources have told me they were grading Bryan as a second-rounder, but think he could end up being a first-round pick because of his great skill set, which is expected to shine in pre-draft workouts. 51. RB Kerryon Johnson: The Lions signed LeGarrette Blount, but he's not a long-term starter. Here's a potential feature back for Detroit. The 5-foot-11, 213-pound Johnson carried Auburn to wins over Alabama and Georgia to put his draft stock on the map late in the 2017 season. Versus both defenses loaded with NFL talent, Johnson showed real quickness with good cutting ability, vision, and decisive downhill running. He also played banged up, illustrating his toughness to withstand a heavy work load and some hard hits. In 2017, Johnson averaged 4.9 yards per carry for 1,391 yards with 18 touchdowns. He also had 24 receptions for 194 yards and two scores. Johnson ran for 895 yards and 11 scores in 2016. Johnson looks like a three-down starter in the NFL who should be able to hurt defenses as a runner and a receiver. 82. DE Breeland Speaks:
The
Lions need more defensive line talent. The 6-foot-3, 283-pounder is
strong at the point of attack and also has some speed with athleticism.
In 2017, Speaks totaled 67 tackles with eight tackles for a loss, seven
sacks, one forced fumble and one pass batted. He then decided to enter
the 2018 NFL Draft rather than return for his final season. Speaks could
get second-day consideration as a base end in a 4-3 defense who also
rushes from the inside in passing situations. He also could gain weight
to play tackle in a 4-3 and could potentially play end in 3-4 defense. 114. LB Jerome Baker: The
Lions could use more linebacker talent to go with Jarrad Davis. Baker
recorded 72 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, one forced
fumble and three passes broken up in 2017. Entering the season, there
was a lot of media hype about Baker (6-1, 225), but in speaking with
scouts who did advance work on the 2018 class, they weren't overly
impressed with him. They said that Baker ran around more blocks than he
took on and had the speed to get away with that against average
offensive lines in college. They thought he was more of a second-day- to
early third-day-level player. They said Baker is a good player, but not
complete and not anything exceptional. They felt Baker was a good,
solid, instinctive guy, who in the right system, will play in the NFL,
but over time, is a dime a dozen. After Darron Lee was taken in the
first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Baker won the job to be Lee's
replacement as Ohio State's fast run-and-chase linebacker. He had a
quality debut with 83 tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks and two
interceptions. Baker is a highly athletic linebacker with
sideline-to-sideline speed. His fit comes as a Will - weak side -
linebacker in a 4-3 defense or being a run-and-chase inside linebacker

Draft Tek Mock Draft (20. DE Harold Landry: Landry is yet again the pick for the Lions this week, making it back-to-back weeks we've been slotted with the tenacious pass rusher. In last week's analysis, I discussed both the Boston College connection between Landry and the Lions' new Defensive Coordinator, Paul Pasqualoni, as well as their need for an edge rusher. If you believe in fate, this seems like the stars are aligning for a Lions-Landry marriage, although some draft pundits who also have the Lions selecting Landry are classifying the pick as "insurance" due to Ansah's contract situation. The Lions have until July 16th to come to an agreement with Ansah to extend his stay with the team beyond the 2018 season. The concept behind drafting a talented edge rusher like Landry to potentially replace Ansah if he decides to leave does makes sense, although I disagree with the use of the word "insurance". Landry is, for the lack of a better term, "The Man" and more than just "insurance". At 6'3" 250, the dude can move! He ran a 4.64 in the 40 yard dash and had a 6.88 time in the 3-cone drill. What's all that mean? Landry's fast in short areas, which bodes well for him and the Lions. He can utilize his ability to dip, dodge, and bend around o-linemen and to keep up with running backs as they change direction. In fact, Landry ranks in the 95th percentile among edge defenders (based on his Combine results). This is comparable to DeMarcus Ware, J.J. Watt, David Pollack, Melvin Ingram, Joey Bosa, and T.J. Watt. Insurance? Please. 51. C Billy Price: Last week I had the Lions selecting Arkansas Center Frank Ragnow, on whom I am extremely high. I'm also high on Ohio State Center/Guard Billy Price. You can't really go wrong with either of these studs and this change in selection from Ragnow to Price this week is to simply show that either o-linemen will do wonders for the Lions. There is no doubt that the Lions need to further address offensive line in this year's draft. The position has seen its fair share of turnover in recent years as former Center Travis Swanson, Reilly Reiff, Laken Tomlinson, and Larry Warford are no longer with the team. All of which were relatively young players upon their departure from the roster. Quinn has certainly gutted the o-line in search of players that fit his mold. Either that or he has a low tolerance for underperformance. That being said, Quinn hasn't been afraid to shuffle players around on the o-line. He seems to value versatility, as he has talked about moving Graham Glasgow to center if they cannot find a better option at the position. By moving Glasgow to center, it creates a void at guard, and by keeping Glasgow at guard it creates a void at center. It's quite the conundrum, but by drafting a player like Price, who has experience playing both guard and center at Ohio State, it would give Detroit the flexibility Quinn loves and what the Lions need to patch up a somewhat messy situation. 82. DraftCountdown (17. DE Marcus Davenport: Despite the presence of Ziggy Ansah and the emergence of Anthony Zettel, the Lions still struggled to apply pressure to opposing quarterbacks. There was such an extreme lack of depth they were forced to bring in 37-year-old Dwight Freeney mid-season to try and add a little juice. Plus Ansah has yet to sign a long-term deal and will be playing under the franchise tag. Davenport has as much pass rush potential as any defender in this class, with the length, speed and athleticism to be a force off the edge. Whether it’s with his hand on the ground as a defensive end in a 4-3 or on his feet as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. The Senior Bowl week confirmed that Davenport is raw and will require patience, but the way he came on at the end of the week and in the game offered a glimpse of the what’s possible. Something else to keep in mind is that the Lions new defensive line coach Bo Davis held the same position at U.T.S.A. last season, where he worked with Davenport. If Davenport is gone an alternative could be Harold Landry, a defensive end / outside linebacker hybrid who new defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni coached in college. There is a hole on the interior of the defensive line too following the loss of Haloti Ngata so keep an eye on Florida DT Taven Bryan as well. 51. MLive Nate Atkin's Mock (20. DE Harold Landry: By signing so many starters to one year deals -- Ezekiel Ansah, Sylvester Williams, Luke Willson and LeGarrette Blount -- the Lions are allowing themselves the chance to strike on the best player available at any of them without feeling like they have to take any one position. Landry winds up as the best talent period at this spot, with an edge bend that fuses Vic Beasley with Whitney Mercilus. He showed it with a nation-best 16.5 sacks to go along with 22 tackles for loss as a junior in 2016. His numbers dropped as he fought through an ankle injury last season, but he illustrated that the speed and quickness are all still there with the best three-cone drill of any edge defender at the combine. Having played for defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni just last year should show Detroit the different ways it can use Landry as a combo linebacker. His speed would balance Ansah's power so well next year, and he could step into the premier edge rusher role if Ansah leaves after that. 51. Rashaad Penny: The Lions set themselves up with so many directions they could go in in these early rounds, either to running back or guard or defensive tackle or tight end, without the need to start any from Day 1. After skipping out on last year's loaded running back class and regretting it, they're going to get involved this season. It's a priority with LeGarrette Blount and Ameer Abdullah playing in contract years. Penny is a name I've been high on for a while, and he's slowly making his way up some draft boards after showing his top gear with a 4.46-second 40-yard dash at the combine. The nation's leading rusher with 2,248 yards and 23 touchdowns on 7.8 yards per carry last season brings a mix of size, speed, wiggle and physicality, yet his vision is his best trait. He needs time to develop his pass blocking and can do that in a stable of backs. He'll step in and command that open kick return role after he took seven back for touchdowns in college, and he'll add to the running game in doses as a rookie. By 2019, the backfield should be his. Detroit has good options in this spot with Penny, Georgia's Nick Chubb and Auburn's Kerryon Johnson. A trade down would be ideal, perhaps if a team is coming looking for a quarterback. Detroit Lions O'Hara's Mock (20. Da'Ron Payne: Head Coach Matt Patricia has said he wants to build the defense from the ball out, and Payne would provide the interior with a quicker, more explosive version of A’Shawn Robinson, the Lions’ second-round pick out of Alabama in 2016. At 6-2 and 311 pounds, Payne had an official time in the 40 of 4.95 seconds at the Combine. He hit the first 10-yard split in a blazing 1.67 seconds. Payne had 27 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press. With all the attention on the Lions’ run game, it should not be overlooked how the defense was dominated for long stretches at times.
