They need to add a player who can become the leader of their defensive unit at the position. If they do so, perhaps they'll finally be able to compete with some of the top teams in their division. Devin White was extremely productive this past season, logging 133 tackles. A projected running back, White is still learning the position, which is crazy considering how great he was in 2017. White is already generating a buzz for the 2019 NFL Draft, as Charlie Campbell reported in the NFL Hot Press. 43. DE Brian Burns: The Lions don't really have much of an edge threat outside of Ziggy Ansah, who barely plays. They'll need to upgrade this area during the 2019 offseason. Brian Burns needs to bulk up quite a bit, as he played at 220 pounds as a freshman, but he has a long frame, so he has the potential to fill out. He had 9.5 sacks as a freshman. 86. 2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (8. DT Jeffrey Simmons: The Lions grab an interior rusher and penetrator to go with A'Shawn Robinson. Simmons recorded 63 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and four passes batted in 2018. As a sophomore, he totaled 60 tackles with five sacks, 12 tackles for a loss, one pass batted and two forced fumbles. The 6-foot-4, 301-pounder is a special player who possesses an excellent combination of speed, athleticism, size and strength. Simmons will be very polarizing because of off-the-field issues. In a video that is reminiscent of Joe Mixon, Simmons is seen beating a woman in a street fight, throwing multiple punches. Some teams that don't consider players with a history of domestic violence will immediately remove Simmons from their draft boards. 43. DE Jaylon Ferguson: The Lions could use more help at edge rusher even if Ziggy Ansah is re-signed. Here's an intriguing player to address defensive end. In 2018, Ferguson totaled 64 tackles with 26 tackles for a loss, 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes broken up. He recorded 39 tackles with seven sacks and 9.5 tackles for a loss in 2017. After that season, sources told me that Ferguson didn't have a great year and should return to school for 2018. Ferguson put together a huge 2016 season, racking up 14.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two passes broken up, 16 tackles for a loss and 49 tackles. Ferguson impressed as a freshman as well with six sacks, 35 tackles and two forced fumbles. Some sources are intrigued with Ferguson, while others aren't high on him. He could stand to grow stronger for the NFL. 9 88. TE Caleb Wilson: The Lions moved on from Eric Ebron, and he is breaking out with the Colts while Detroit has missed a receiving threat at tight end. Here's a mismatch weapon. Wilson totaled 60 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns in 2018. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder was phenomenal in 2017 as the most reliable receiving threat for Josh Rosen. Prior to a season-ending foot injury, Wilson had 38 receptions for 490 yards and one touchdown. He was instrumental in the legendary comeback over Texas A&M, hauling in 15 passes for 208 yards in that game. As a freshman in 2016, he had 16 catches for 220 yards. DraftTek Mock Draft (8. CB Byron Murphy: Finally, the regular season is over and Lions' fans can rejoice. In Detroit, it's almost a holiday, as the Lions have ended the misery of a season that was entered with high expectations which were not met, not even in the slightest. Now, we turn to projecting the 2019 NFL Draft. What will the Lions do? It's anybody's guess, as the team has gaps roster-wide. From an aging secondary and right-side of the offensive line, to contract issues with Ziggy Ansah, and a wide receiver group that does not have a "true" number one, it's clear the Lions have issues everywhere. The draft strategy? Focus on your strength and get younger. Fun fact if you choose to believe it, the Lions actually rank as a Top-10 defense in the NFL. You heard that right. A Top-10 defensive unit. Allowing just 224 passing yards per game through the air and 110 rushing yards per game on the ground, it's true; the Lions are a Top-10 defense. It's clear that the defense has much since improved over the course of the season and Patricia's scheming and re-tooling has worked. The only problem, it didn't do enough to aid an offense that clearly was hindered by Golden Tate's absence, Kerryon Johnson being placed on IR, and an offensive line playing under their potential. So why Byron Murphy? Why not Ed Oliver or a DT that could beef up the line next to Damon "Snacks" Harrison? Why not a playmaking WR? Why not an edge rusher? Simply put, Darius Slay needs help, the secondary is only getting older, and the potential number two CB in Teez Tabor just hasn't panned out. The Lions lost out on the Greedy Williams sweepstakes by winning in Lambeau in Week 17, so why not take the next-best thing in DeAndre Baker or Byron Murphy? In fact, Detroit ranks 11th in the NFL with 43 sacks on the season. We know that Patricia can do a lot with low quality, but could you imagine how stifling a defense would be with potentially two #1 CBs locking down both sides of the field? LB TJ Edwards: With the Lions' second pick in the 2019 Draft, they yet again go defensive with an outside linebacker. T.J. Edwards out of Wisconsin isn't the most flashy name you'll see, but he's one of those players who does a lot of the little things right. Things that a coach like Matt Patricia, in this "Patriot Way" ideology loves. There honestly isn't a whole lot of written analysis on Edwards, but watching game film, he seems to be extremely comfortable at his position and knows, as aforementioned, how to do all the little things right. Whether it's a play breaking down defensively and he needs to improvise, or taking on an offensive lineman to free up a blitzer and then drop back into coverage, pass play recognition, and even taking out blockers with runs to the outside to help quicker teammates, Edwards is a true "do-it-all" selfless linebacker who's got just enough flair for the big play to be a solid second round choice. PFW Mock (8. DE Clelin Ferrell: This would be a bit of a reach in my mind, although Ferrell clearly is a terrific football player who should have a home in the NFL for the next decade. More than anything, it feels like a safe pick — high floor, and a good not elite ceiling — at a need position, which only partially fits the Lions’ draft mantra. But they certainly need an impact defender who can help a unit that felt shorthanded all season, even with the overall numbers not terrible on that side of the ball.
