DraftTek Mock Draft (8. S Deionte Thompson: Last week we had the Lions selecting Washington CB Byron Murphy. This week, the Lions address secondary yet again with the now-available Alabama S, Deionte Thompson. Sticking with a similar tone as the week prior, the Lions will want to look hard at their secondary depth in 2019 and beyond, which makes this pick make sense here. With Glover Quin entering his age 33 season and Darius Slay under contract until 2020, there should be a concerted effort into giving Slay some help behind him or next to him on the other half of the field. Given that there is no guarantee a talent like Slay stays, the Lions' brass would be wise in giving him help and restoring faith in one of their stars that things will start to progress. Granted, Tracey Walker played really well down the stretch for Detroit and looks to be an emerging talent, but not many safeties look like Thompson. In this new push to become a pass-happy league, this may be a strategy worth digging into as having more rangy, athletic, and skilled DBs could pose problems for the opposing offense. Keep in mind that Detroit finished in the top 10 in Defensive Yards Allowed in both run and pass per game, so it's not like the defense is necessarily yearning for skill there, but given Ed Oliver's off-the-field concerns, and not many "home run" D-Linemen outside of Oliver, it seems like the "safe" pick to make but one that could easily work out for Detroit and Patricia's scheming to counter the offensive revolution we're seeing. 43. LB Te'Von Coney: Last week we had the Lions selecting T.J. Edwards, OLB from Wisconsin. With Coney slightly higher on our Big Board, Detroit goes again with OLB help in the second round. When first watching Coney, he appears to be very athletically gifted, keyword being "appears". His lengthy frame would usually portray quickness and agility, but that's just not the player you see on film. However, not to worry; Coney seems to understand what his skills and his weaknesses are. He has shown the ability to shed blockers and when if push does come to shove, he shows his "team" mentality by containing his gaps. Coney is one of those players that seems to exhibit the "Do Your Job" approach. He plays smart, he covers zone well, and he would be a solid addition to a linebacker corps that could use a little depth and a little youth.
