Walter Football 2019 NFL Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions - LB Devin White: The Lions have one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL. They can't cover anyone over the middle of the field. They need to add a player who can become the leader of their defensive unit at the position. If they do so, perhaps they'll finally be able to compete with some of the top teams in their division. Devin White was extremely productive this past season, logging 133 tackles. A projected running back, White is still learning the position, which is crazy considering how great he was in 2017. White is already generating a buzz for the 2019 NFL Draft, as Charlie Campbell reported in the NFL Hot Press. 43. DE Brian Burns: The Lions don't really have much of an edge threat outside of Ziggy Ansah, who barely plays. They'll need to upgrade this area during the 2019 offseason. Brian Burns needs to bulk up quite a bit, as he played at 220 pounds as a freshman, but he has a long frame, so he has the potential to fill out. S Deionte Thompson: As the Senior Bowl came to a close this past Saturday, the Lions' brass made it clear just days prior that they needed to add more playmakers to their roster. Although Alabama Safety Deionte Thompson did not participate (Junior class) he's the type of player the Lions desperately need in their defensive backfield to grow behind Glover Quin and Quandre Diggs, help Darius Slay, and in the process, mature with Tracy Walker. It's worth noting that the primary target for DB on most mock draft boards is LSU cornerback Greedy Williams, and trust us, if Greedy was available at #8, he'd most definitely be the Lions' selection here. Since he isn't, why not get the next best thing from the SEC? Thompson is your prototypical ball-hawking shutdown safety who is rangy enough to make plays you think he can't. Given the Lions have a need in the pass rush as well, not addressing it would lend to more opportunities to being beaten downfield and with a seemingly abundant group of pass rushers and d-linemen this draft season, it wouldn't be a wild decision to take Thompson and secure that spot for the long haul while addressing d-line either in free agency or later in the draft. All Hollywood does is make plays in space and when he finds himself in precarious situations, a simple head bob, a shimmy and a shake, and he's gone to the house. The Lions need someone explosive, and they've been missing that element since our beloved Calvin Johnson retired. Pairing Brown up in the slot with Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr., Lions fans will quickly forget Golden Tate. With the RD1 selection of Alabama Safety Deionte Thompson and this selection of Brown, Lions' GM Bob Quinn can happily and confidently say that they acquired more "playmakers". Interesting fact to end this analysis: With rumors swirling that Detroit could be in on the Antonio Brown trade talks, Marquise Brown is actually Antonio Brown's cousin. Sweat might not be a prototypical 4-3 defensive end at his size, but that's where he plays his best and that's how his NFL team will likely use him. Walter football 2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (8. LB Devin White: The Lions grab a linebacker upgrade to go next to Jarrad Davis. White is a big inside linebacker who possesses excellent instincts. The 6-foot-1, 255-pounder has good athleticism with the ability to cover in the passing game while also being a terrific run defender. White notched 123 tackles with 12 for a loss, six passes broken up, three sacks and three forced fumbles in 2018. In 2017, he totaled 133 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, three passes broken up and one interception. That season was a breakout campaign for the sophomore, and if he could have entered the 2018 NFL Draft, he would have graded out similarly to Virginia Tech's Tremaine Edmunds or Georgia's Roquan Smith. White is a pure football player and could be one of the safer picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. 43. DE Jaylon Ferguson: The Lions could use more help at edge rusher even if Ziggy Ansah is re-signed. Here's an intriguing player to address defensive end. In 2018, Ferguson totaled 64 tackles with 26 tackles for a loss, 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes broken up. He recorded 39 tackles with seven sacks and 9.5 tackles for a loss in 2017. After that season, sources told me that Ferguson didn't have a great year and should return to school for 2018. Ferguson put together a huge 2016 season, racking up 14.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two passes broken up, 16 tackles for a loss and 49 tackles. Ferguson impressed as a freshman as well with six sacks, 35 tackles and two forced fumbles. Some sources are intrigued with Ferguson, while others aren't high on him. He could stand to grow stronger for the NFL. 9 88. TE Caleb Wilson: The Lions moved on from Eric Ebron, and he is breaking out with the Colts while Detroit has missed a receiving threat at tight end. Here's a mismatch weapon. Wilson totaled 60 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns in 2018. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder was phenomenal in 2017 as the most reliable receiving threat for Josh Rosen. Prior to a season-ending foot injury, Wilson had 38 receptions for 490 yards and one touchdown. He was instrumental in the legendary comeback over Texas A&M, hauling in 15 passes for 208 yards in that game. As a freshman in 2016, he had 16 catches for 220 yards. Ansah has missed action due to injuries the last three years and only played in seven games this past season. That wasn’t the return on investment the Lions expected when they placed the franchise tag on Ansah to the tune of $17 million last offseason. Detroit’s reluctance to commit to Ansah is understandable, but replacing him will be a tall task. And costly as it may require the use of this Top 10 pick. Many felt Ferrell would’ve been a first round pick last year as a redshirt sophomore and he reaffirmed those projections with another standout campaign. Ferrell has everything that you look for physically, most notably a long, rangy frame and impressive athleticism. What makes Ferrell special though are his technique, intangibles and uncommon level of overall polish. That all adds up to a well-rounded, three down defender with double-digit sack potential.)
