But they could also take the No. 1 linebacker off the board, or the No. 1 offensive tackle, or the No. 1 receiver, or -- God forbid -- the No. 1 tight end. With so many sensible options, let's consult the scouting report on Bob Quinn. He likes high-floor players at positions of need, and who hail from power schools. And nobody still on the board checks more of those boxes than Ferrell. He's a polished pass rusher who racked up 11.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss last year. He finished with 27 sacks and 50.5 tackles for loss for his career, plus won two national championships. A big-time talent with big-time production for a big-time winner? Ferrell is exactly the sort of prospect Bob Quinn goes for. Walter Football 2019 NFL Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions - LB Devin White: The Lions have one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL. They can't cover anyone over the middle of the field. They need to add a player who can become the leader of their defensive unit at the position. If they do so, perhaps they'll finally be able to compete with some of the top teams in their division. Devin White was extremely productive this past season, logging 133 tackles. A projected running back, White is still learning the position, which is crazy considering how great he was in 2017. White is already generating a buzz for the 2019 NFL Draft, as Charlie Campbell reported in the NFL Hot Press. 43. DE Brian Burns: The Lions don't really have much of an edge threat outside of Ziggy Ansah, who barely plays. They'll need to upgrade this area during the 2019 offseason. Brian Burns needs to bulk up quite a bit, as he played at 220 pounds as a freshman, but he has a long frame, so he has the potential to fill out. DraftCountdown (8. DE Clelin Ferrell: Whether unrestricted free agent Ziggy Ansah will return is very much up in the air. Ansah has missed action due to injuries the last three years and only played in seven games this past season. That wasn’t the return on investment the Lions expected when they placed the franchise tag on Ansah to the tune of $17 million last offseason. Detroit’s reluctance to commit to Ansah is understandable, but replacing him will be a tall task. And costly as it may require the use of this Top 10 pick. Many felt Ferrell would’ve been a first round pick last year as a redshirt sophomore and he reaffirmed those projections with another standout campaign. Ferrell has everything that you look for physically, most notably a long, rangy frame and impressive athleticism. DraftTek Mock Draft (8. LB Devin White: After numerous weeks of slotting Alabama Safety Deionte Thompson here for Detroit's RD1 selection, it's time to change it up. The beautiful thing about mock drafts is that we're allowed to play with different scenarios and really see the cause and effect of each team's selections. One thing is for certain, the NFL Draft can be unpredictable, so it's for the best that we change it up from time to time and really get to see the "what ifs" play out. Outside of Clelin Ferrell, Josh Allen, or Greedy Williams, Devin White seems to be the next best option for Detroit here at #8. Many mock drafts and experts alike are projecting White to be a Top 10 prospect in the 2019 Draft and why wouldn't he be? White amassed 123 tackles, 62 of them were solo tackles, with 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. If you watch him on film you can easily see that he's not only one of the fastest players on the field, but White has that desire to make big-time plays, something Lions' GM Bob Quinn has spoken to address this offseason. The line of thinking here is, with the Lions' linebacking corps made up of Jarrad Davis, Devon Kennard, Christian Jones, Eli Harold, and Trevor Bates (who recently had a run in with the law), it may be wise to become more athletic at this position, give Patricia a new toy, and if you can't get Ferrell or Allen, acquiring White would be another opportunity for the Lions to address their pass rush that tied for 11th in the NFL with 43 sacks in 2018. As the Lions improved their defense in yards allowed per game into the Top 10, why not build upon that strength? - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 43. WR Marquise Brown: As the Lions selected a freak athlete in the first round (Devin White) we once again slot the Lions with WR from Oklahoma, Marquise Brown. Last week, we made a Antonio Brown connection as Marquise is his cousin. It would be a fun idea to play with if so facto that the Lions could be in on the sweepstakes for AB if Marquise is wearing Honolulu Blue and Silver, but that's a tad bit of a stretch. Whether or not drafting Brown would be a selling point for AB to request a trade to Detroit, the Lions undoubtedly need a WR after the Golden Tate trade this past season. It was ever apparent that Tate was a huge focal point in the offense as Detroit ranked 20th in offense at the end of the 2018 season. Barely acceptable in today's offensive league.
